Hue is a 5 storey apartment building thatsits within a post industrial streetscapein Lord Street, Richmond. The site isbound on 3 sides by large 2-4 storeybrick warehouse buildings whilst acrossthe road are the rear yards of residentialproperties.

The brief was for a multilevel apartmentbuilding that maximised yield on the site.

Our design strategy was to imagine thesite as a landscaped island within itsaustere industrial surrounds. The buildingcould then sit as a singular, sculpturalobject within this landscape. Growing

creepers on screens built on perimeterfences would also ensure that a gardenaspect could be created for units within thedevelopment. Slightly rotating the buildingon the site amplifies the relationship of theobject to the landscape and its surrounds,as well as creating opportunities for earlymorning or late afternoon sun access particularly to south facing apartments.jacksonclementsburrows

The treehouse is sited in the bush fringeof Separation Creek, perched on asteep forested hillside above the GreatOcean Road and Bass Strait. It is a sitethat enjoys a unique combination ofbush environment with intimate views ofSeparation Creek, the beach and the WyeRiver Peninsula to beyond.

The steepness of the site, landscapecontrols and landslip potential resulted ina limited building envelope to work within.These constraints (or opportunities) ledus to explore a sensitive yet sculpturalresponse that minimised it footprint byechoing in form a tree with branches,with rooms branching and cantileveringin all directions of a central trunk to takeadvantage of views, access and aspect.

A modest brief called for a three bedroomresidence with associated living spaces.
