MSRC Timeline

• November 07 – NSC studied Sport bike fatalities and determined specific training was necessary – MSF agreed to work with the NSC to develop a Sport Bike Rider Course (SBRC)

• December 07  – Industry was reluctant to support the training, afraid it would villainies the sport bike – NHTSA did not support the “theory” that sport bikes were the problem

• January 08 – MSF renamed the SBRC, the Military Sportbike Rider Course to fend off concerns

from Industry and NHTSA• May 08

 – MSRC is rolled out to the Navy and Marine Corps

• June 08 – OPNAVINST 5100.12H CH-1 rolled out to mandate the MSRC

• October 08

 – CFPS is contracted to provide Traffic training including the MSRC• November 08 – US Army begins using the MSRC

• March 08 – US Air force begins using the MSRC

• April 09 – MSF will be rolling the MSRC out to the public

Sport Bike Characteristics

• Speed can easily exceed 140MPH and HP over 180

• 1/3 the weight of a standardbike

• High CG makes them verynimble (and unstable)

• Torque and high RPM givesthem unmatched acceleration

• Aerodynamic design, including

rider position• Tire traction and ground

clearance allows for leaning inturns at over 60 degrees

Standard Bike Performance

• Designed to cruise at speedfor long distances

• HP generally produces “pullingpower” not acceleration or speed

• Very heavy for a smooth ride• Low CG makes them very

stable• Powerful engines for effortless

cruising and acceleration

• Laidback, comfortable ridingposition• Tire Traction designed for

smooth stable ride.• Minimal ground clearance, low

ride improves stability

600cc Sport Bike Performance

• Vehicle is “performance light” at

under 400 lb• At 90 HP, the acceleration and

speed are TEMPTING to test, even for riders with goodjudgment

• With PROPERLY adjustedsuspension, the bikes are agileand fast

• Originally designed for the track, most Sport-bikes are ridden byUNDER-SKILLED riders with

youthful abandon and too often, fatal consequences

• These are considered entry levelbikes even though they provideHP equivalent to the 1800cc

motorcycles!

Take Aways

•Training works if it is:

•Provided at the appropriate Time

•Of Adequate Quality

•Beneficial to the Participants

• Leadership must stay engaged.

• Peer Pressure and rider “buy-in” is necessary

•Mentorship is one way to do that

• Poor rider judgment in any vehicle need continuedattention

Only a Team effort

will help reduce Fatalities
