•People do care about you and they want to be there to help.

-How could he find us?-Umm, heat-seeking missiles, bloodhounds, foxes, barracudas. -It’s just... I’m kinda flabbergasted when you say things like that. It’s weird. -Thank you. -Not a compliment.

-Can we turn our beds into bunkbeds?-It’ll give us so much extra space in our room to do activities.-You’re adults, you can do what you want.-This is the funnest night ever!

I’m getting sick, you smell like aftershave and taco meat!

One day Veronica and I are gonna get married on top of a mountain, and there’s going to be flutes playing and trombones and flowers and garlands of fresh herbs. And we will dance till the sun rises. And then our children will form a family band. And we will tour the countryside and you won’t be invited.

Ca Fie e: a white, crystalline, bitter alkaloid

Caffeine: a white crystalline, bitter alkaloid, usually derived from coffee or

tea, C8H10N402, the medicine chiefly as nervous system stimu-

lant. “I need caffeine just as much as I need air,” says Lexi Long who drinks A Red Bull A Day

before school. Students are lost without their dose of caffeine during the school day. Many say

it definitely has an impact on their concentration. The students that are unable to drink milk

for lunch, or choose not to can only drink water from 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM.

Caffeine is consumed

at least weekly by 98%

of students ages 5-18.

The amount of caffeine con-

sumed per day depends on the

day of the week.

The highest consumption of caffeine

is on weekends (with a peak on Sat-

urday), and the lowest consumption

occurs mid-week.

On average, a student consumes 1

caffeine-containing product daily.

The amount of caffeine consumed on a given

day is dependent on the duration of sleep

experienced the previous night.

These children have

an earlier wake time

after sleep onset the

night following caf-

feine consumption.

the street from the stadium. While prac-ticing, the Georgia team drove by on gi-ant charter buses and all 600 girls waved to them from the field. After about two

more hours of prac-tice, our dance lead-ers took us over to the stadium to see where we would be entering. This sta-dium was huge! Hav-ing already learned the routine the BCHS girls were more than ready. Waking up at 5:30 a.m. Thurs-day morning was rough, but well worth it. Any cheerleader that attended could describe in amaz-

ing detail the excitement that filled the air from all the squads. Their descrip-tions could go from the packed stadium of screaming fans to performing a routine that could not get any more perfect. All nerves were lost in our motions and we could not help but smile the entire time.

After winning 1st place in the floor cheer competition at the UCA summer camp, the BCHS squad received an invitation to per-form at the Capitol One Bowl on New Years Day in Orlando, Flor-ida. After camp, the cheerleaders started many fundraisers to help pay for the trip. Once their goal was reached, all that was left to do was pack their bags. Upon arriv-ing in Florida on a Sun-day, for some ,Monday, the cheerleaders and their families were able to settle into the All Star Sports Resort and had all of Monday to visit Disney World. Tuesday they had practice early in the morning for the squad. As soon as prac-tice was finished, the girls could meet their parents at the Resort or Disney park they were at. Wednesday went like this too, only the squad was able to prac-tice on a small football field right across

Janet Merel of Deerfield, IL, recently introduced Diet Dirt (sterilized soil that can be sprinkled over french fries, cake, etc., to make them taste repugnant). Order $10 bags from 1-888-DietDirt.

James Dowdy, 23, of Belleville, IL, was sen-tenced to three years in prison after being ar-rested carrying a bag of stolen socks. He was on probation at the time for another sock theft and has never been accused of stealing any-thing except socks.

Rock Hill, S.C. -Authorities say a man escaped from a burning tanning bed just before it burst into flames, igniting a fire that damaged several stores and forced people to leave a shopping center. The man said he heard a popping noise while working on his tan, then saw a flame at the corner of the tanning bed near his foot. Several dozen firefighters arrived at the scene to battle the blaze as shoppers and store workers gathered in the parking lot and the smell of charred plastic filled the air.

Philadelphia- Employees of a pet store

expecting a shipment of tropical fish

and salt water got a man’s dead body instead. Mark Arabia owns the Pets

Plus store in northeast Philadelphia, where the mix-up was discovered

Tuesday.

US Airways Inc. released a verbal statement saying the air cargo problem was

caused by a “verbal miscommunication between a delivery driver and the cargo

representative.” The fish were shipped in three boxes. The corpse was shipped

in a wooden coffin wrapped in cardboard. Arabia said the fish were left at the

airport and probably died.

What is 7 feet long, weighs 30 pounds, has eight arms and fits in a box slightly larger than a milk crate? “Truman” the octopus. Truman squeezed into a clear, acrylic box while trying to snag his lunch at the New England Aquarium in Boston. Aquarium workers often place food inside locked boxes for the intelligent animals to crack open. Truman spent about 30 minutes inside before slithering out, delighting staff and guests who witnessed the spectacle. He never did get the smaller box open.

News of the WeirdWeirdA customer shopping at Wal-mart told the store workers he found 10 human teeth in a wallet he was about to purchase. Police said the man found the teeth Saturday when he unzipped a compartment in the wallet. One tooth had a filling. Police investigating the incident told The Cape Cod Times that the teeth belong to an adult, but since there was no blood or gum tissue on the teeth, they would be unable to perform DNA tests.

When you think of your future, what do you see? You probably see yourself graduating from high school, going to college to prepare yourself for your dream job, somewhere down the road getting

married and becoming parents. Sound right? That’s how I saw my future…

All it takes is for one little mistake to have your dreams all disapear. Getting pregnant as a sophomore in high school definitely wasn’t in my plans. The scariest day of my life was going to a normal doctor’s appoint-ment for a checkup and being told I was pregnant. I couldn’t imagine what

people were going to say about me. I knew the rumors were going to start flying but even worse than that, I knew my family was going to be so disappointed. It actually took me a month to tell my parents. I didn’t know what they would say. I had so many thoughts running through my head. They were actu-ally, to my surprise, much more understanding than I thought they would be. They know that people make mistakes but they also knew that my future was on the line.

I had a decision to make. Would I keep my baby and possibly risk not graduating from high school or having the future I had dreamed of. Knowing my parents were at the age they couldn’t start all over again raising another child, would I have the resources needed to raise a child on my own? Although I always loved children and had grown up with babies in my life, I wondered if I could truly raise a child on my own.

Or would I give him to a family who could give him everything that I couldn’t and make their dreams of becoming parents come true. They would give him everything he would ever possibly need or want. He would grow up in a home with a mom and a dad who loved him more than anything. The choice was difficult—more difficult than I can put into words. But at five months into my pregnancy, I met the people who would become the adoptive parents of my baby.

Parker Brayden came into the world June 10, 2008 at 3:12 p.m. Along with my mom, my Aunt Es-ther, my nurse (who happened to be my aunt Barb), and his future adoptive mother April was there to see the birth. I held him, amazed at the beautiful little being in my arms.

I love him so much I can’t even explain but I knew I wouldn’t be able to care for him like they could. My life has changed so much but it changed for the better because of the decision I made…

There are three different kinds of adoption: closed, semi-open, and open. A closed adoption can de-pend on the situation or on the decision of the birthmother. A closed adoption is where the baby and the birthmother have no contact what so ever. The birthmother doesn’t know where her baby lives or about the adoptive parents. Both of my brothers have a closed adoption. They don’t know their birth families, they are happy where they are and that is all that matters to them.

A semi-open adoption is basically staying on a first name basis and being able to send letters and videos but again not knowing where the baby lives. You send your letters and videos to the adoption agency and they will send it on to whomever it goes to. I had a semi-open adoption with my birthmother

until I was fourteen and got to meet her. Since then we have had an open adoption, I talk to her all the time and can see her whenever I want. I chose to have an open adoption. I know where my baby lives, I know his family, and I can see him whenever I want and I will always be a part of his life. Parker will always know who I am and that makes everything so much easier. There is no way I could live the rest of my life not knowing where Parker is or how he is doing. I don’t have to wonder. I know he is doing great and I know he is where he belongs. While it broke my heart to give him up and it hurts every time I go to see him and have to leave, I know I will be seeing him again soon.

Parker’s parents have helped so much! After Christmas they let me stay with them a few days so I could spend Parker’s first Christmas with him. That meant so much to me. They are amazing people and I wouldn’t trade them for the world. I definitely still have really hard days but when I do all I have to do is call or text them and I remember why I chose them to be Parker’s parents.

There’s no way I would change anything I have done because it has all just made me a stronger per-son and now I have no idea what I would do without Parker in my life. If I had any advice at all, it would be this: be so careful with your choices because one minute your life is going exactly how you want it and the next minute you can make a careless decision that will change your life forever. My life has changed forever. I am not the same person I was. The choice that I made will live with me for the rest of my life.

January 20th 2009 is a day we’ll always remember. History was made,

tears were shed, and dreams were achieved. Barack Obama was

elected as the first African American President of the United States of

America. African American men in America have the lowest education

levels, highest prison rates and shortest life expectancies among us. This man

overcame social challenges and aspired to achieve a great number of goals in

his childhood, education and short professional career because he worked for

it. As our new president, Obama plans to make health insurance affordable and

accessible to all, lower health care costs, and promote public

health. He also plans on providing a tax cut for working families,

small businesses and startups. For rural areas such as Brown

County, Obama seeks economic opportunities for family

farmers, he will support small business development, and

improve rural quality of life. America’s time for change has

come, and Barack Obama is the man for the job.

r FFFFFFFFF36 students from Mr. Parker’s Current Events classes were surveyed on whether or not they were for or against our new President Barack Obama.

After many months of planning, the day of departure finally ar-rived. We left the St. Louis airport on June 8th and headed for Toronto, Canada for a nine hour layover. That night we left for our first destination; Dublin, Ireland. The overnight flight was more than exhausting, and when we landed at 8:30 am, we were all ready for bed. Sadly that was not the case..we hit the ground running. We spent three days in Dublin and during that time, we saw many historic landmarks. We made a stop at Trinity College to see the Book of Kells which is an illuminated manuscript in Latin, containing the four Gospels of the New Testament. The next day involved a walking tour of the City Centre and a trip to dún laoghaire to see the Irish Sea. After a few exciting days, we hopped on the largest car ferry in the world, sailed the Irish Sea, and headed to Wales. We only spent one evening in Wales, but it was by far the coolest place on the whole trip. The towns were so small and quiet, it was very relaxing. We made a stop at Beaumaris Castle, located in Beaumaris, Anglesey, Wales. It was built as part of King Edward I’s campaign to conquer the north of Wales. It was designed by James of St. George in 1925, but was never finished. It is regarded by some to be the most architectur-ally perfect castle in Britain. London was next on the list, and we arrived late on a Friday evening. We were all really excited to find out that we would be attending the Queen’s Birthday Parade the next day. Throughout our stay in London we visited the Tower of London, London Bridge, the Millennium Wheel and many more famous attractions. The trip was more than half-way over and some of us were anxious to return home. Paris, France was our second-to-last stop. We went to the Eiffel Tower and saw the city from above, we saw the Mona Lisa at The Louvre Art Museum, and drove around the Arc De Triumph. Our last destination was Normandy, France.. the lo-cation of D-Day in WWII. It was a very quiet place. We stayed in Normandy for an evening and got ready for our trip back to Paris for the flight home. It was an amazing trip, one that none of us will ever forget. If this sounds interesting to you, Linda Kennedy is putting together a trip for Summer 2010 to Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji. If interested, stop by the Middle School office and talk to her.

DivorceJust when you think life couldn’t get much better, something happens. When you hear that word slip from

your parents’ mouth, the world seems to crumble at the thought of your own family falling apart. The word

is divorce. The first question in your head is, “what did I do, was it my fault?”. The second might be, what

will this mean for our family? But in reality, it’s not your fault. Sometimes things that are supposed to be

forever just aren’t meant to be.

“It’s Better This Way, They’re Happier Now.”(BCHS 10th Grade Student) It was just after being tucked into bed when they got right back up after their mom came in and told them to pack their bags because they were going to grandma’s. But it wasn’t just a sleep over like they usually do every other weekend, mom was coming with them and dad was staying behind. When realizing that their mom and dad weren’t going to be together anymore, they were sad at first but in the long run it was going to get better. Then the question was, what about two different houses? “It was hectic at first but then it got easier when we switched between two different houses.” Their parent’s divorce was also hectic, but it got easier in the end.

“They Said They Just Didn’t Like Each Other Anymore.”(BCHS 9th Grade Student) One night, their parents sat them down and explained that they just didn’t like each other any-more and they wouldn’t be together. After the talk, they went to bed but when they woke up dad was gone already. Being so young when this happened, it was something big to get used to. When it came to trading houses, “It was hard to get comfortable at two different houses, but I later found out that dad’s house felt more at home.” But living at dad’s house got a lot harder because the nights they were there, they had to get used to her dad’s new girlfriends and step siblings coming and some going. That soon got easier when their dad got remarried.

Going Green!Going Green!Human Ecology is...

You may have seen slogans around the schools such

as “Find a bin, put em in,” “Saving the earth one

flush at a time,” and “Don’t flush it all away.”

These were the projects of Mrs. Benninghoff’s

two Human Ecology classes. Both classes went to

great extents to take a step towards getting the

schools to “go green.” Seventh hour wanted to

take recycling plastic to the next step. They

ordered big trash cans for students and faculty

to place their empty water bottles in. Eighth

period directed their attention toward water

conservation. For four weeks, students brought

in various bottles to fill with water and place

in to the school’s cisterns.

Have you ever had to pay for a late assign-

ment? Well that’s just one of the many

“perks” of Media class. If we don’t meet a deadline,

we pay the company. Needless to say, we meet

our deadlines! Yearbook class is like none other.

You have to write, you have

to take pictures, you have

to learn the ins and outs of

Photoshop and InDesign,

you have to sell ads. SELL

ADS??? To keep the cost of

the Rambler down to an af-

fordable price for students,

class members sell ads per-

sonally, over the phone and

by letter to businesses in Mt.

Sterling, Quincy, Jackson-

ville, Rushville and Beard-

stown. That means you

actually have to learn how

to shake someone’s hand

and talk like an adult on the

phone!

You work hard

thinking of theme pages that cover the interests

of BCHS students. You work hard trying to get EV-

ERY student in the book at least twice. You work

hard at trying to cover every event, every game, ev-

ery dance and sometimes just that ordinary day.

Media is one of the few classes you can

take more than one year. Why? Well the first year

is LEARNING THE ROPES and believe me, that takes

all year! After that, you take on

more responsibility by being

an editor or business manager.

And by the end of your senior

year, you should be able to

teach the class and let Mrs. Mc-

Caskill enjoy her coffee (just kid-

ding!)

So the next time someone

is lurking with a camera, don’t

shy away!

It’s our way

of making

sure YOU

get in the

Rambler!

students.

O n the other hand, I have talked to some people who believe the change

was what we needed and that it has made it much better for students. Erynn McNeff, a senior, had this to say “I really like the schedule change. Having eight block since Iwas in 7th grade I didn’t think that a change would be good. I really like having shorter classes though and not having to sit in one class for eighty minutes.” Mrs. Zimmerman, BCHS English teacher, also had something good to say about the new schedule change. “ I really like the new schedule. With the old schedule Math and English classses met for less time each week than other classes. Even though it was only a couple of min-utes each day, it did add up. It gives me more time to work with students and make sure that they are ready to move to the next level.”Mrs. McCaskill has mixed feelings about the schedule change. For most of her classes, the new schedule has worked out just fi ne. “Me-dia, however, is a diffi cult class to get anything done in that short of time period. Just when the kids get into their layouts, the bell rings. But we’re adjusting and tweaking our way of doing things.”

Change is not always easy at fi rst, but 2009 has shown that BCHS students are

quick to adjust and ready to learn...no matter what type of schedule they may have.

8-Block to Traditional...8-Block to Traditional...

This year at BCHS we changed from eight block schedule back to traditional

schedule. This was not a decision made lightly or on the spur of the moment. Many things were taken into consideration before the change was made.

I have talked to students and teachers and have gotten some very different opin-

ions about how they feel about the schedule change. Some students think it is a very good idea. Having class every day gives the stu-dents more time to learn and the shorter pe-riod keeps makes it easier to stay focused. Others think it is not so good because it makes it harder for students to keep up with all the homework and still be able to keep up with sports, jobs, or other activities.

Here is what some of the students here at Brown County High think about this

change in the schedule. Jessie Jennings, a freshman, says this about the schedule change:“I honestly don’t like the schedule. I feel that it is worse because it’s hard for people to stay on top of homework when they have jobs or play sports.” Brian Lashbrook, a sophomore, has the about the same opinion “I think the schedule goes a lot faster but we still get two days worth of homework.”

Some think that the schedule change was not needed and made it harder for

c.rohnwhat has it meant to your 2009 school year?

How many times do you hear a teenager say “I’m fat” or “I’m on a diet” during your normal school day. Many teens, girls and guys are worried about how they look to their fellow classmates. This obsession can come from sports, peer pressure, or even everyday stress caused by past experiences. Eating disorders such as Anorexia nervosa or Bulimia nervosa are very common among teens and can cause very serious damages to your body. They can cause swollen joints, anemia, a con-stant stomach pain, tooth decay, or even in the worst case scenario death. When it comes to these disorders many will try very different ways to make sure that they do not gain weight and try to look “per-fect” to everyone. “When someone tells me they are fat I just tell them to shut up cause it’s stupid, they know they aren’t” says Freshman Nikki Jennings. Some will crash diet or excessively exercise. Others use laxatives to empty their stomach as quickly as you can. This is dangeraous because the weight lost is mostly water loss not fat loss, laxatives reduce the absorbed vitamins and minerals in your body which leave us weak. Most eating disorders can start between the ages 11-13 and can become a very serious problem to stop. Being anorexic and bulimic is a double edged sword--you feel like you’re in total control of your body but in reality you’ve lost all control. When these teens look in the mirror they describe themselves as having a “distorted” body image. Gretchen Koch said “You are beautiful the way you are and you shouldn’t change anything about you just so you can fi t in with other people.”

Many teens in the U.S. especially in areas like here at BC drink. The most common form of drinking is Binge Drinking. Binge drink-ing is when you have more then fi ve drinks at one sit down. Many teens drink more many reasons. One reason is that they are just curious. Companies everyday run ads that tell you how cool and awesome life is when you drink. Another reason they drink is

because of peer pressure and they don’t want to look not “cool” around there friends or they people they

think are friends. One other reason would be that they want fi t it. Teens always want

to be accepted and feel like they have something in common with someone else. Drinking can have serious effects on your body. It can cause alcohol poisoning, vomit-ing, seizures, extreme confusion and if that person decided to drive after they had been drinking it could cause death

to themselves or even someone else.

Here are some statistics the next time you think about drinking and

driving:•Every 22 minutes a person dies from an

alcohol related crash. •60% of all teenage deaths in car accedents are alcohol related.

• On any given weekend evening, one in 10 drivers on America’s roads has been drinking

• In 2002, 17,970 people were killed in crashes involving alcohol.

a.kochMarch MadnessMarch MadnessThe month of March means alot of different things for people- some of these things being softball, baseball, spring weather, and the nearness of sum-mer vacation. For others, it means March Madness is here! For NCAA bas-ketball fans, this time of the year is like the Super Bowl for a football fanat-ic. Chances are, you have already filled out a bracket to compete amongst family and friends. The National Championship is on April 6. Right now, it’s down to the Sweet 16. There have been some pretty close games thus far, and the intensity will only be increasing. Think your team can go all the way?

Ipod Use HaltedAfter a faculty vote, a decision was reached to no longer allow the use of Ipods, CD players, MP3 players, etc. in classrooms or study halls. Students were notified by daily announce-ments on Wednesday, February 25, 2009.

While many teachers had never allowed the use of Ipods in their classroom, others felt that when used during independent work Ipods were acceptable.

Like many things in life, it only took a few students who took advantage of the privilege of having music players in class by listening to them during lec-tures or lessons to ruin it for the rest of us. Students may be upset at the administration and teachers for banning mu-sic players from the classrooms, but it was the students who took it for granted that ruined it for everyone else.

After reading through the stu-dent handbook, we have realized that no where in the handbook does it say that students are allowed to have music players in classrooms. It seems it was just one of those things that didn’t bother some teachers or affect their classroom learn-ing. As students have been asked about the new rule, they have said that they would like to see something in the hand-book next fall about the new rule. While they understand headphones should not be worn during lecture or in a class-room where teachers have ex-pressed their disapproval of iPods and such, they would like to see it be allowed wherever teachers are agreeable.

This does not mean music cannot be played on a class-room CD/Ipod dock player if the teacher allows it.
