A Few Words From Your

Chapter Directors

Well, it looks like another sum-

mer is coming to a close. It

seems like it was either hot, or

it was raining and now fall is

approaching, and that means

Chapter Z’s fall Festival is com-

ing on at a fast rate. The festi-

val is the first Saturday of Octo-

ber which is October 1st. Let’s

make this year fall festival one

of our best, and that means

participate, participate and

participate. We will be needing

volunteers in all phases for the festival, please contact us by the September meeting so we

can put a schedule together. We will be needing

attendance prizes, and donations for the bas-

kets which will be a maintenance basket, Hal-

loween fall basket, picnic basket and whatever

else you might think of for a nice basket

With the fall weather moving in later next

month we have more rides planned for the fol-

lowing weeks of fall. Chapter P is having their

Switchback to Arkansas Ride Sept 9th thru 11th

which is always a great time.

Hope everyone has had a great summer

and we will see you at the September meeting.

Awesome Thoughts

Chapter Z Assistant Directors

We started off the month with a great ride to Cape Girardeau for the Chapter I Fun Run where we had 22 members participate, as always we had a great time, with our GWRRA family, the fish was a huge hit with the Chapter Z. A big Congratulations to Lisa and Trey Chiles and their team for a job well done!!! Our next event was our monthly dinner ride to Main Street Cafe, we had a great turn out with 26 members in attendance, Mike Sullivan was the big winner for the 50/50 drawing (although I doubt he ever saw the money since I gave it to Donna). On August 20th we had 11 members attend the District Appreciation Picnic in Jefferson City. August 21st was the annual Ride For Kids in St Charles, Chapter Z was the top fundraising group with $7269.00, Chapter W2 raised $6454.00, Chapter I with $3251.00

and Missouri O with $2595.00. Grand total for the RFK was $38,787 thanks! A huge con-gratulations to all who supported such a great cause!!!

IS IT THE LAST GREAT HURRAH?

Hi folks, well believe it or not it is SEPTEMBER! Where has the summer gone? Mother Nature has been throwing curve balls at us in the last few weeks. Just a few days ago temperatures were in the mid to upper 90’s with a humidity to match. Then the last few days we had days reminiscent of fall. Today the temps are back in the 90’s with humidity in the mid to upper 70’s! What’s a motorcycle enthusiast to do? Well I hope here are some pointers that will help your “last” remaining days of fun comfortable.

Plan your clothing choices. Either here in Missouri where temps change at the drop of the hat or planning a trip out east or west; the temperatures in one time zone may not be the same in your destination. The Arkansas Switch Back trip is just around the corner. Don’t get caught unprepared for the weather. (Just ask a few of the riders that have gone in the past years). Plan ahead!

Keep an eye on weather forecast! As some of you here in Missouri have experienced, storms have tendency to “pop” up on these hot and humid days. Make sure you have your rain suits handy and have an emergency stay over plan in mind just in case the weather stays too bad for travel. Remember if the temperature takes a plunge early morning fog could prove to be an issue presenting with reduced visibility with wet and slick surfaces. Days are getting short-er. You may find yourself getting back from that awesome ride at dusk (or in Chapter Z case O Dark 30!). Make sure you conduct a TCLOCK (especially lights) so others can see you. Check your first aid kits and flashlights just in case.

When was the last time you checked your fluid levels? Was it at the last maintenance day? No one wants to be stranded on the side of the road (especially a goldwinger!).

Check your tires. After all you have been riding all those chip sealed back roads all summer. Those roads put a high rate of wear on motorcycle tires. Look for cracks or extreme wear. No one wants to take that last trip on tires that are marginal. How about remembering to check your tire pressures! Cool morning and warm afternoon can cause substantial changes in tire pressures affecting handing and braking.

These are just a few pointers that might help to insure an enjoyable and memorable “LAST HURRAH” trip before the end of the season sneaks up on us.

As Tom and I arrived for the Ride for Kids event, I noticed something I had not seen in a few years. Clear

skies and a warm day. In the past two or three years, we have had rain by the buckets. Oh sure, our Stars

and their families still came out but it always put a little bit of a “damper” (excuse the pun) on the event. But

today, today was going to be different.

One of the stars Daniel, came looking for Tom so he could ride the orange bike again and asked if he would

please play that good country music. I think Tom was a little shocked that he remembered from the previous

year. In talking with Daniel, we found out that he was named Employee of the Year and would be receiving

an award at Busch Stadium. He was very excited about that.

People gathered with their donations, and the ride went off without a hitch. After the ride, we enjoyed a

light lunch and an update from Dr. Rubicon.

Dr. Rubicon explained the advances they have

made in the last 10 years. He explained how

important it was for the fundraising events all

over the country because Pediatric Brain Tu-

mor Foundation is not funded by the govern-

ment. Ten years ago it was thought that all

tumors were the same. But through all the

funding, they now understand that, that is not

the case. There are advances in DNA sequenc-

ing, intelligible disability and can even use the

immune system to help them get better.

Mom Trisha thanked us for supporting her daughter Ashley. Their first event with us was when she was 11

weeks old. The doctors told her that they would hope to have her around for Christmas. After Christmas

there was hope that she would be around until Kindergarten. With a catch in her voice, Ashley’s mom

thanked us for our years of dedication because now her teenage daughter was working towards a Scholar-

ship, Driving, a Job and BOYS!!!!!

As we celebrated the joys of all the kids that were there that day, I quietly noticed that two of our stars were

not able to be at the Celebration of Life. Brian Ott came by early in the day to drop off some donations and

then had to go to work. Unfortunately, Zach was not able to be there due to a stroke. I said a little prayer

for both of them, thanking God that Brian was growing up so big and was able to hold down a job. I also

prayed to help Zach and his family through their journey. You get so used to having them there year after

year, that it is hard when you do not see them. I want to thank all the volunteers from our chapter who came

out and supported the event and to all those who have supported in the past and those that donated and

worked our fundraisers for the cause. I know the families appreciated it very much.
