Shouldered sleeves with O-rings should already be installed in the shock eye.If not, insert sleeves with O-rings in the top eye ( ).

Check the orientation of the adjuster on the shock body - looking at the top ofthe shock, it should be 20 degrees (counterclockwise) from the nitrogenpressure valve to the hydraulic line port on the adjuster . If it isnot properly oriented, you will need to reposition it. To do this, hold the uppershock eye securely in a vice and carefully rotate the Remote Adjustable Pre-Load adjuster the desired direction. This may be somewhat difficult due tospring tension, and may require slight loosening of the locking ring. Also, thespring, shaft, and lower mount may rotate while repositioning the adjuster. Thisis OK, just be sure to realign it with the upper mount (also be sure the reboundadjuster on the lower mount is properly oriented as noted below).

On the left side of the motorcycle, remove the secondary drive cover, rectifier cover, and rectifier. Also remove the Remote Adjustable Pre-Loadadjuster knob by removing the screw located in the center of the knob, then pull it straight off.

Reinstall the adjuster knob, and torque the screw to 50 in/lbs (5.65 N-m).

Make sure the shock rebound adjustment is towards the rear and facingdown and the non-adjustable nitrogen port is towards the front facing up.

Then mount the bracket to the bike using the two lower mounting boltholes for the rectifier bracket as shown in figure 5 - one of which is thelower mounting bolt for the rectifier, which will be replaced with thesupplied longer fastener. Reinstall the rectifier, sandwiching the adjusterbracket behind it .

3. Set your ride sag per the main instructions, noting the following. The proper spring pre-load setting will permit the rear suspensionto sag, or compress, approximately 1.50” to 2.0” from fullextension. That measurement should be made from the rear axle toan arbitrary point on the chassis vertically above it.

4. Spring pre-load adjustments are made with the supplied preloadadjusting wrench by first loosening the upper locking ring, thenadjusting the lower preload ring (figure 3). Once the proper preloadhas been achieved, re-tighen the locking ring against the adjustingring. With the shock fully extended, the spring installed length mustnever be adjusted to a length shorter than 195mm or 7.68” inches(figure 4).

5. Test ride: If excessive bottoming occurs you need to increaseyour spring pre-load setting as described above.

The preload adjustment must not be set to allow for a

spring installed length shorter than 195mm (7.68”

Check the orientation of the adjuster on the shock body - looking at the top of the shock, it should be 145 degrees (counter-clockwise) from the nitrogen port to the hydraulic line port on the adjuster (see figure 1). If it is not properly oriented, you will need to reposition it. To do this, hold the upper shock eye securely in a vice and carefully rotate the Remote Adjustable Pre-Load adjuster the desired direction. This may be somewhat difficult due to spring tension, and may require slight loosening of the locking ring. Also, the spring, shaft, and lower mount may rotate while repositioning the adjuster. This is OK, just be sure to realign it with the upper mount (also be sure the rebound adjuster on the lower mount is properly oriented as noted below).

Mount the shock as you would your stock shock per your authorized shop manual noting the following:

nRemove the Remote Adjustable Pre-Load adjuster knob by removing the screw located in the center of the knob, then pull it straight off (figure 2).

nAs you mount the shock, feed the Remote Adjustable Pre-Load adjuster through the opening behind and just above the shifter linkage located on the left side of the bike (figure 3). Do not loosen or attempt to rotate the line between the shock and the adjuster.

nReinstall the adjuster knob, and torque the screw to 50 in/lbs. (5.65 N-m).

nMake sure the shock rebound adjustment is at the bottom facing the right side of the motorcycle and the non-adjustable nitrogen port is facing back.

nTighten shock bolts to the proper torque specifications (refer to your manual).

nMount the adjuster to the supplied mounting bracket using the supplied M6-1.0X8mm SHCS fasteners and torque them to 80-90 in/lbs (9-10 N-m). Then mount the bracket to the bike using the stock two engine cover bolts (figure 4).

465 Series Single ShockInstallation Instructions

Installation

Changing the chassis and/or suspension on any vehicle will change the handling characteristics of that vehicle. Care should be taken when operating the vehicle with such modifications while getting accustomed to the new handling characteristics.

Caution: Removing and replacing the shock absorber must be performed by a qualified mechanic or according to steps outlined in an authorized shop manual that relates to your particular make, model and year motorcycle.

These are general instructions. For specific instructions relating to your particular model please read the enclosed supplemental instructions, as well as referring to an authorized shop manual.

The vehicle must be securely blocked to prevent it from dropping or tipping when the shock absorber is removed. Failure to do so can cause serious damage and/or injury!

Progressive Suspension 465 Series shocks are designed to work with the OEM (Original Equipment) chassis components. Use of this product on any chassis components other than OEM may produce an unsatisfactory ride and void the warranty.Warranty

Progressive Suspension warrants to the original purchaser this Part to be free of manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship for a period of one (1) year from the date of purchase. In the event warranty service is required, you must call Progressive Suspension immediately with a description of the problem.

If it is deemed necessary for Progressive Suspension to make an evaluation to determine whether the part is defective, a return authorization number will be given by Progressive Suspension. The parts must be packaged properly so as to not cause further damage and returned prepaid to Progressive Suspension with a copy of the original invoice of purchase and a detailed letter outlining the nature of the problem. If after the evaluation by Progressive Suspension the part was found to be defective it will be repaired or replaced at no cost to you. If we replace it, we may replace it with a reconditioned one of the same design.

Progressive Suspension shall not be held liable for any consequential or incidental damages resulting from the failure of a Progressive Suspension part. Progressive Suspension shall have no obligation if a part becomes defective as a result of improper installation or abuse.

nRead all the instructions carefully before installing this shock on your motorcycle. Use your factory authorized manual as a reference while installing this shock.

nSupport and lift the motorcycle securely so the rear wheel is off the ground.

nRemove stock shock absorber from motorcycle according to instructions contained in your authorized shop manual.

nMount the shock per instructions contained in the enclosed supplemental instructions.

C a u t i o n

NOTE: The internal pressure and fluid level of your shock and Remote Adjustable Preload (RAP) adjuster are set from the factory and NOT to be

adjusted by the customer. Do NOT attempt to add/remove any fluid or pressure from any fill/bleed ports on either the shock or RAP adjuster (see below) as damage and/or injury will result and the warranty will be voided.

Preload / Ride Sag

nPreload is preset to an average setting, but should be adjusted to produce the proper Ride Sag using the adjuster wrench included (requires the use of a 3/8" rachet) - OR the Remote Adjustable Pre-Load adjuster, if so equipped.

nPre-load adjustment controls the “ride height” or “sag” of your motorcycle. To check your Ride Sag there are two key measurements, the first is Extended Height the second is Ride Height, and both are ideally measured from the center of the rear axle to an arbitrary point directly above the axle (a fender bracket, for instance).

n Extended Height is measured with the bike on a jack with the rear tire just off the ground or off the stand and with a helper. While holding the bike straight up have the helper solidly lift the rear end by the fender or rack until you feel the shocks stop extending, or “top out”. Once you are certain the suspension if fully extended, take your first measurement.

nRide Height is measured with the rider, or riders, and gear on the bike (hands on the bars and feet on the pegs) and a helper or two supporting it. A measurement is again taken using the same points as before.

nNow subtract the second measurement - Ride Height - from the first measurement - Extended height - and the difference between the two measurements is the Ride Sag.

nRide Sag is generally expected to be 1/3 of the total wheel travel. If your number is less, then the bike will require less preload, and if it is greater, more preload is needed.

Warning: Preload Adjuster locking rings (if equipped) are not locked! Locking rings must be tightened before riding motorcycle!

nAs stated above, on 465 Series shocks not equipped with the Remote Adjustable Pre-Load adjuster, once the ride height has been set the lock ring (if equipped) must be firmly tightened against adjustment ring.

nOn 465 Series shocks equipped with the Remote Adjustable Pre-Load adjuster, the fine adjustment range is set to what we feel is the average range. However the adjustable range can sometimes be moved up or down depending on your needs. The method for this courser adjustment is the same as adjusting the standard preload - simply rotate the adjuster rings.

Regardless of which kind of preload adjustment your 465 shock has, there is a minimum installed spring length that is model specific - and you must

NEVER adjust the preload to produce a spring length less than that minimum length, or the spring may go coil-bound and damage will result.

The minimum installed spring length is noted on the model specific installation instruction supplement included with this shock.

Figure 1

Rebound DampingDue to the cam shape design of the rebound adjuster, any damping change from Position 1 must be made in a clockwise direction. Do not turn the knob counter-clock-wise from position 1 to position 5!

W a r n i n g

C a u t i o n

Damping adjustments

nRebound damping is the speed your shock returns after being compressed. Position 1 offers the least resistance (low rebound) while position 5 offers the most (high rebound). See figure 1.

nWe recommend position 3 as a starting point.

nAdjust with the included 1/4” allen wrench.

nToo little rebound damping can cause wallowing in turns, a springy feel under acceleration out of the turns and a tendency to push the rider forward on the machine while going over big bumps and depressions. Too much rebound damping causes a harsh ride, wheel chatter on braking and tendency for the machine to stay squatted after hitting a bump (packing down).

nAll damping adjustments should be tested by thoroughly riding the motorcycle.

Maintenance

nShock and linkage should be cleaned and properly lubricated at intervals recommended for the stock shock in your service manual.
