    heEnochiansystemofmagickalevocationisconsideredoneofthemostadvancedintheWesternworld.Theangelswhoseattentionsitgainsareamongthemostpowerfulanddangerousmighty

spiritual beings who are concerned with the motions of the stars and the rise and fall of earthlygovernments. Respected magickal orders such as the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn reserveEnochianmagick for their highest Adept grades. Academics and researchers have spent generationsattempting todecipher andunderstand the journals of themenwho first recorded thematerial.Evenbeyond thoseoriginal journals, theEnochian systemhashadaprofoundeffectonWesternoccultismoverthelastseveralhundredyears, muchofwhichhasbeenlittleunderstooduntilfairlyrecently. Therefore,ImustadmitthatitwasdifficulttoimaginewritinganEnochianmagickbookwrittenfor

beginners. Imagine, for example, attempting to writeAn Introduction to Atom Smashing orBrainSurgeryforBeginners. What informationcouldsuchbookscontain thatwouldbeunderstandableanduseful for someone just beginning on his or her path? For a while I was stumped and even unsurewhetherIshouldtakeontheproject.Thankfully, someclose friendsquicklypointedout anerror inmy thinking.Whether the subject is

nuclearphysics,neuralsurgery,orEnochianmagick,youhavetostartsomewhere.Writingabeginnersbookonacomplexsubjectdoesnotmeancreatingawatered-downversionofthesystemandpresentingitassafeforthecourageousneophyte.Instead,itshouldserveasanintroductiontothemorecomplexmaterial.Itshouldincludesomebasichistoryanddefinethetermsandlingothestudentwillencounterlater.Mostimportantly,itmustpresentasimplifiedoverviewoftheentiresystem,therebyallowingthestudent to see the whole proverbial elephant before focusing upon the trunk, ears, legs, or otherelephantinecomponentsindetail.Thinking about the project in this way also brought another fact into focus: in its original form,

Enochianmagickwasneverrestrictedtomagickalmastersalone.Infact,theEnochianjournalsrecordasystemthatwasverymuchforbeginnersatthestartandproceededintomoreadvancedpracticesasthesystemunfoldedovermonthsandyears.1Therefore,amodernEnochianbeginnersbookcanfollowthesamepattern,introducingthestudenttotheverybasicsandpreparinghimorherforthemoreadvancedmaterialencounteredinlaterstudyandpractice.Once I had considered all of the above, I realized I had been given the opportunity to create an

Enochian grimoire, presenting the practice of themagickwithout dwelling upon every detail of thesystem(suchasendlessmagickalsquaresmadefromothermagickalsquares,complexmethodsofnamedecryption,long-windedquotesfromDeesjournals,etc.).Alltheseaspectsofthesystemarecertainlyimportantthey are the underlying foundation of the magickbut they are not necessary in anintroduction to thesystem.AnEnochiangrimoireshouldbe lightenough tocarryaroundamagickalcircleortempleandincludetheinformationyouneedtocreatethetoolsandperformtheceremonies.

Then I will present an overview of each phase of Dees magick as itprogressed through his journalsfrom the Heptarchia (planetary magick), Gebofal and the Book ofLoagaeth(includingthefamousforty-eightAngelicalCallings),tothePartsoftheEarthandtheGreatTable of theEarth (which concernworld-changingmagick). Iwill then trace the thread ofEnochianhistoryfromJohnDeethroughtheGoldenDawnandbeyondtoillustratehowasetofjournalsthatDeenever shared with the public became some of the most influential magickal documents inWesternhistory.Next, Iwill presentmyEnochian grimoire. Itwill present theHeptarchia,Gebofal (the use of the

BookofLoagaeth), thePartsof theEarth, andtheGreatTableof theEarth(Watchtowers)systemsofmagick.ItwilloutlineEnochiancosmologyandthemagickaltools, furnishings, angels, andspiritsofthe system. Then it will provide step-by-step instructions for Enochian magickal ceremonies. Thisgrimoirewill focusuponDee-puristEnochiana,meaning itwill notborrowmaterial fromanyof thesourcesthatcameafterthemanhimselfpassedaway. After theDee-puristmaterial, Iwillpresentanoverviewof theneo-Enochiancurrent that is rooted

ANoteontheBasicsofMagickDue to space restrictions, it is impossible for me to include detailed instructions for the basics ofRenaissance angel magick or the lodge-style rituals of the Golden Dawn. That lastnameAdamicalwas used by Dee (briefly) after the angels told him that Adam had spoken thelanguagefluentlyinEdenandhadevenusedittoapplytruenamestoallthingsincreation.(Inmyownwork,IhavechosentostickwithAngelical.)Accordingtothelegendrevealedbytheangels,Adamlostthelanguagewhenhefellfromparadise

This reconstruction was the firstprimordialversionofHebrew, thoughitsnotaHebrewwewouldrecognizetoday.Sometimelater, theconfusionof tongues tookplaceat theTowerofBabel (Genesis11),and theprimordialHebrewwassimilarly lost. After that, biblicalHebrewthe languageof theOldTestamentcame intoexistence, andtherestislinguistichistory.

It failed, of course, due to the events that led up to the great flood (Genesis 68), duringwhichallofEnochswisdomwaslost.Fortunately, theAngelicalCalls revealed toDeeweregiven loose translations, and therehavebeen

several efforts over the years to create workable dictionaries of the words. I have made my owncontribution, which I published as The Angelical Language, Volume I: The Complete History andMythosoftheTongueofAngelsandTheAngelicalLanguage,VolumeII:AnEncyclopedicLexiconoftheTongueofAngels.Thoseprojectswerefairlymassive,takingtenyearsandoverninehundredpagestocomplete.BecauseIcoverthesubjectinsuchexhaustivedetailthere,Iwillsavespacehereandreferthereadertothosebookstolearnmoreaboutthetongueoftheangels.AsIstatedpreviously,LoagaethisthecentrallinchpinofDeesentiresystemofmagick.Theangels

    TheHistoryofDeesEnochianTradition

o far, I have givenyou the very basics of theEnochian tradition, JohnDee, and themagickherecorded in his journals. You should now be generally familiar with certain termssuch as

Heptarchia,Gebofal,GreatTable,Watchtower, andPart of theEarththatwere oncemysterious. Inthischapter, wewillexploreageneralhistoricaloverviewofDeesEnochiantradition.Iwill beginwith some thoughts aboutDees own intentions andmotivations behind recording the

Enochian material. The discussion will briefly touch upon subjects such as Jewish and Christianmysticism.Next,IwillexplorethedevelopmentoftheEnochiantraditionafterDeespassing, startingwith a brief summary of how the journals escaped fromDees hiding places into the hands of lateroccultists. Then I will trace the Enochian influence through the scholar-philosophers of the RoyalSocietyofEngland, theAdeptsoftheGoldenDawn, andonintotheoccultismofthetwentiethcentury.Thiswill illustratehowdrasticallyDeesmaterialwasalteredby thosewhofollowedhimoccultistswho rarelyhad access to all ofDees journals and largelymisunderstoodwhat they could find.ThisresultedinanentirelynewEnochiantradition,whichIhavecalledneo-Enochianinpreviouswritings.

    TheEnochianMagickofDr.JohnDee(orDeePurism)

ItisimportanttoconsidertheworkofDeeandKelleywithinthecontextoftheRenaissanceworldinwhich they livedwhere Protestantism was diluting the previously unchallenged authority of theCatholicChurch, wheretheChurchofEnglandwasstillyoungandendangered, whereBritainwasonthevergeof empire and theNewWorldwasnewlydiscovered.Deesmagick appears verydifferentthrough this lens than itwould lookmuch later, afterpassing through theAgeofEnlightenment andmagickal groups like theHermeticOrder of theGoldenDawn. This study of the original version ofDeesmagickasrecordedbythemanhimselfistodaycalledDeepurism.Alltoooften,DeepurismismistakentomeanthatonlyDeesownwritingsareimportanttothestudy

of Enochianmagick. Nothing could be further from the truth! Dee himself studied severalmysticaltraditions, suchas theHebrewQabalahandMerkavahmysticism, theChristianQabalah,Gnosticism,andeventheSolomonicgrimoires.(Wewillexplorethesefurtherbelow.)AlloftheseshowtheirmarkuponDeespersonalsystemofangelmagickandarethereforeanimportantpartoftheDee-puriststudyofEnochiana.Whenwe compareDeesmagick to his sourcematerial, we begin to get an idea of his unspoken

intentions.ThefirstphaseofhissystemtheHeptarchiaappearstobehisownversionofthemagickfound in the Solomonic grimoires. Precursors to the Heptarchia (and other phases of the Enochian

  • system)canbefoundintextssuchasAgrippasThreeBooksofOccultPhilosophy,ArbatelofMagic,LiberJuratis,TheHeptameron,Lemegeton(especiallythePaulineArtsand theAlmadelofSolomon),andmanymore. Likemany of these texts, DeesHeptarchia is a system of planetary angelmagickintendedtogaintheattentionsofthesevenentitieswhoconstructedandcurrentlymaintaintheuniverse. One of the grimoires in particular contains an essential occult primer for anyone who wishes to

greatlyinfluencedbyJewishmysticalpracticessuchasCountingtheOmerandMerkavahmysticism.Counting theOmer isanobservance thatspans thefiftydaysbetweenPassoverandShavuot.Duringthistime,theJewishmysticcouldengageinthepracticeofEnteringtheFiftyGatesofUnderstanding(orBinah).This involveddailymeditationsupondifferent aspectsofGodas recorded in theTorah.EachmeditationleadstheaspirantclosertotheDivineandshouldultimatelyopenachannelofdirectcommunication fromGod tohuman.25Thiswouldappear tobe the inspirationbehind the forty-nine-daypracticeofGebofal,duringwhichadifferent table fromtheBookofLoagaeth ismeditateduponeachdayuntilitculminatesuponthefinaldayindirectdivinerevelation.TheMaasehMerkavah(workoftheChariot)wasanearlyformofJewishshamanismthatexisted

vitalfoundationsfortheJewishQabalah(aswellastherestoftheWesternMysteryTradition).Aspectsof Merkavah mysticism run throughout Dees system of angel magick, especially in the Loagaethsystem, which promises that one can enter the forty-eight gates of heaven and explore the realmsbeyond.ThethirdphaseofDeesmagickisbrokenintotwoaspects:thePartsoftheEarthandtheGreatTable

of theEarth. The parts system appears to be drawn fromAgrippaswork 26 (with some reference toMerkavahmysticism),while theGreat Table of the Earth appears to be a diagram of theMerkavah(throneofGod)itselfandhasalargelyalchemicalfocus.27

Even Dees Angelical language did not arise in a complete vacuum. Long before he penned hisjournals, scholarsandmysticshadbeensearchingfortheprimordialtonguethatis, thefirsthumanlanguage, supposedly spoken in Eden. Other famous mages (such as Trithemius and Agrippa) hadalreadyattemptedtocreatesomeformofthis language. However, theyusuallyproducedaversionofHebrewwrittenwith obscure Hebrewesque characters.Deewas one of the first (perhaps the veryfirst)mysticstorecordatrulyuniquecelestiallanguagewithitsowngrammar,syntax,alphabet,andsoon.28

  • Finally, thereisaheavyGnosticinfluenceunderlyingmostofDeessystem.Gnosticismisamysticalreligion thatarosearound thedawnof theCommonEra in theareaofEgypt. Itdrewmuchfromtheancient Egyptian and Greek philosophies that were common to that area at the time. It aroseindependentlyofChristianity, butafteracoupleofcenturiesithadbecomecloselyassociatedwithearlymysticalChristian sects. Traces of Gnostic doctrine can be found within the Hebrew Qabalah, alchemy,Hermeticism,theSolomonicgrimoires,etc.InDeessystem,theGnosticinfluenceismostobviousinthepoeticalimageryoftheforty-eightAngelicalCallings.29

Takenalltogether, itwouldappearDeewishedtoformulatehisownChristianizedversionsofthemostpowerful occult systems he had encountered. This makes perfect sense when we consider that theChristianQabalahwasnewlybornandgatheringsteamduringDeesera.TheChristianQabalah(oftenspelledKabbalahorCabalaaswellasothervariations)isamixtureofChristian,Jewish,andHermeticmysticism.OneofthefirstChristianQabalists,PicaDellaMirandola,hadlivedinItalyinthelate1400s,about

one hundred years before Dees journals were written. Another famous Christian Qabalist, JohannReuchlin,livedinGermanyduringthelate1400sandearly1500s,passingawayjustafewyearsbeforeDeesbirthin1527.Therefore,DeestoodinagoodpositiontoaddhisnametothelistofgreatWesternChristian Qabalists. Had the kings and emperors who glimpsed Dees journals understood thesignificanceofwhat theysaw,hewouldhaveachievedhisgoal,andhisnamewouldnowbespokenalongsideMirandolas,Reuchlins,andthosewhofollowedthem.However,thatdreamwasneverfulfilled.ToomanypowerfulpeopleweresuspiciousofDeesangelic

revelations.Remember, thiswasatimewhenanythingthatsmackedofoccultismorthatattemptedtocontradict religious authority could get you arrested and tortured to death.Besideswhich, kings andrulers do not generally take kindly towould-be prophetswho insist on issuing commandments fromGod.Thus, insteadofbeinghailedasanaccomplishedphilosopher,Deefoundhimselfhastily leavingseveraltownsinthedeadofnight.Kelley(whoseaggressivepersonalitymadehimfewfriends)wouldescapewithDee on several occasions until he finally found a homewithEmperorRudolph and leftDeesemploy.DeewouldeventuallyreturntoEnglandin1589,wherehewouldspendhisremainingyearsseeking

About ten years after

Dees passing, the landwas purchased byRobertCotton, who claimed he found the journals buriedthere.Later,CottonssonwouldgivethesejournalstoMricCasaubon,whopublishedthemin1659asATrueandFaithfulRelationofWhatPassedforManyYearsbetweenDr.JohnDee(AMathematicianofGreatFameinQ.Eliz.andKingJamestheirReignes)andSomeSpirits.Thispublication,especiallyCasaubonsintroductiontothematerial,wasquitesensationalforthetime.CasaubondescribedDeeasa naive fool whowas duped by devils posing as angelsa characterization that would haunt Deesmemoryuntilthelatterpartsofthetwentiethcentury.Today there is a marked increase in both scholarship about Dee and Kelley and in the practical

application of the magickal systems they recorded. This new movement has led to the Dee-puristpracticeofEnochianmagick,seenforthefirsttimeinoverfourcenturies.Of course, if Dees magickal system was largely unknown and unused until the past couple of

    decades,thenhowdidEnochianmagickbecomefoundationaltotheWesternMysteryTraditioninthemeantime?Letuscontinuethesagainthenextsection:

TheNeo-EnochianTraditionAs discussed in the previous section, Dee did not become famous as a co-founder of the ChristianQabalistictradition.Afterhispassing, fewpeopleknewoftheexistenceofthejournals, andabsolutelyno one attempted to carry on his work.Much of thematerial important toworking the systemwashiddeninthecedarchest, andCasaubonwouldnotpublishATrueandFaithfulRelationfornearlyhalfacentury.Deehad, however, diedwiththereputationofaconjurer, andthiswouldprovidetheperfectaudience

for Casaubons later publication. The world wanted to know what Dee and Kelley had been up tobehind the closed doors of their study.Like tabloid readers today, theywanted dirt and dramaandCasaubonwasmorethanhappytoprovidethemwithboth.Inhisintroduction, hedescribedDeeasapoorzealotwhowas fooledbyabunchofdevilsandaconartist (Kelley).Casaubons takeon thestorybecameacceptedasfact, andnoscholarwouldchallengethatviewfornearlyfourhundredyears.Thankfully, some people were nonetheless interested in Dees actual magickal work. The Age of

Enlightenmentwas justgettingunderway, andWesternculturewasshifting its focus fromreligion toscience. Several members of the Royal Society (a late seventeenth-century English organization ofEnlightenment scholars, scientists, and philosophers) took Dees journals seriously and began toexperimentwithhismaterial.Ofcourse, sincemostofDeessystemwasstillhiddenaway, whatthesescholarsfoundinCasaubons

book was a very intriguing yet incomplete system. It led to the (mistaken) idea that Dee had onlyrecordedaskeletaloutlineofasystem, andthatitneededfleshingoutwithoutsidematerialtomakeit

  • workable. Thus, occultists began to incorporate Dees material (such as theWatchtowers, the HolyTable, and the forty-eight Angelical Callings) into their own established magickal traditions. Thisresulted in something entirely new and different from what Dee had intendedand I call it neo-Enochiana.This was the era of men like Elias Ashmolea founding member of the Royal Societywho is

rumoredtobeamongthephilosopherswhoexperimentedwithsummoningDeesangels.(Thisisbynomeans confirmed.) It was also the period during which the mysterious Dr. Rudd comes into thepicture(seebelow).Othermajorcontributorstotheneo-Enochiancurrentwouldcomealonglater,suchastheHermeticOrderoftheGoldenDawnandAleisterCrowley.

illustratednear thefrontofATrueandFaithfulRelation. Ironically, thiswasperhapscloser toDeesoriginal intent than later neo-Enochian systems would come. Rudd did not seem interested in theWatchtowers, Parts of the Earth, the thirty Aethyrs, or (oddly enough) the forty-eight AngelicalCallings, likely because he was already well-versed in his own systems of angel summoning (asoutlinedintherestofthetreatise).HemighthavebeenmoreinterestedintheHeptarchicsystemifthatmaterialbeenincludedinATrueandFaithfulRelation.IwouldfindithardtobelieveRuddcouldhaveknown about theHeptarchia and notmentioned it in his own analysis of theHoly Table and SevenEnsigns, bothofwhichareinherenttoDeesHeptarchicsystem.

  • BookHThe next important neo-Enochian document to appearwas entitledBookH, orClavicula TabularumEnochi. In fact, Iwould say thatBookH is the singlemost important source document for the neo-Enochian tradition because it would later become the foundation of the Golden Dawns Enochiansystem.Book H focuses entirely upon the Great Table system of angel magick as drawn from Mric

Casaubons publication ofDees later journals. It contains all of the information recorded byDeeincluding theGreatTable initiation rite, the functionsof theWatchtowerangels, and themethods fordecrypting their names from theGreat Table. Then it considerably expands upon those instructions, seeking to present a fully functional grimoire for the use of theWatchtowers. There are dozens oforiginalprayersandinvocations, andthemethodofextractingtheangelsnamesisaltered, thuscreatinganentirelynewhierarchyofspiritualbeingsthatneverappearinDeesrecords.ThereisalsoadifferenceinhowtheauthorofBookHattributedtheWatchtowerstothefourquarters
