A comparison was made between residential and non-residential buildingsconstructions, utilities and emission values in Moscow, Saint Petersburgand Moscow Region.

There were some problems in finding values for gas, electricity and energyoverall, and in some cases, different sources showed different values.

Some graphs have a dramatic increase in some points and dramaticdecrease, which rises a question of its validity

Overall, there is not so much information online available of infrastructure.Most of the data came out of Rosstat website and their years databooksHowever, a number of sources were reviewed and compared. Rosstatwebsite appeared to be the most reliable and full.

Infrastructure conclusions

Usage of fresh and drinking water was decreased in last decade, this could be due to a number of unknown reasons;Usage of electricity has increased dramatically, the reason is obvious;Moscow water emission is increased dramatically and construction of residential buildings increased accordingly.

The data collected so far is still too vague and basic, and does not include comparison with New Delhi and New York as it was planned but have the room for future work. To put together a full infrastructure profile, the data needs to include topics such as:Media / Telecommunications;Comparison with other factors such as National Domestic Gross;Include statistics from New Delhi and New York;GEOstatistics of built area and energy distribution;Find statistics for 2011 -2012.

Initial collection of basic quantitative public transport indicators for Moscow and New York City revealed the surprising trend of decreasing ridership rates for all modes of public transport in Moscow.

Additional information was collected for non-city transport such as airplanes and in-ter-city trains.Data about transport infrastructure, freight traffic and private cars was also collected.

In the end, it was decided to compare the most dynamic indicators (number of private cars and public transport ridership) with overall population growth rate in Moscow.

Some information was also collected on cities such as New York City and Saint-Peters-burg, which can be used in future for investigation of general trends in development and usage of public transport.

Among the challenges, the lack of structured data and numerous contradictions in different sources can be mentioned.

Visualization of collected data reveals the decline in usage of public transport during the last decade that has seen a growing population and a soaring number of private vehicle ownership. These trends explicitly explain the current difficulties of the transport situation in Moscow.

Further analysis will also include budget spendings on the development of public trans-port and its result will probably support the hypothesis about low efficiency of existing programs for public transport development.

WHATBasic information about population and densities. First attempt to describe Moscow’s demographic profile while putting it into context by comparison with the two selected cities(NYC & New Delhi).

HOW2 days/291 relevant site visits (a lot of them are revisits of the same surveys)

The majority of information was extracted out of hard data tables. Diagrams and graphs were used as additional and not as primary sources.

The data, for the most part, came out of governmental sites or big official demo-graphic surveys. Some of the numbers given are estimates as there are no yearly population censuses.

Official census are being executed every 10 years (at least), the data is public and not hard to locate.

In Russia, the first census of the tax-payers was made in 1722-1723 by the order of Peter the Great (only men were counted)

About 250 links were analysed to find data relating to education. Data was taken from official web-sites and open sources. For example, the rate of unemployment after uni-versity, number of schools and universities, the quantity of pupils who passed Unified State Exam on the highest mark and the expenditure of the Ministry of Education.

Data was compiled on three stages of education: preschool, general education and university for students in institutions which are situated in Moscow, Moscow region and Saint-Petersburg in the first decade of the 21st century. That is why the first three slides are about how the number of students were changing in comparison with differ-ent years.

The slide about general education was the most difficult one because the data was tak-en from 4 different sources.

The last slide is about Unified State Exam which appeared in 2005 in Russia. It turned out that there is a gap in data for territorial and quantitative results in 2005, 2006 and in 2009.

Education conclusions

Saint-Petersburg has the lowest number of children estimated to be in preschool educa-tion, especially in 2005.

2008 was the epic year after which the decline in general education is obvious

Looking at the students rate, Moscow has the biggest number of students, Saint - Pe-tersburg is follows next, while the Moscow Region lies far beyond, despite the higher number of universities: 270 in Moscow, 151 in Moscow Region, and 96 in Saint-Peters-burg

In 2012 with the Big Moscow city project the space has increased intensively.

Space conclusions

Land use distribution data was difficult to come by, and almost no estimates have been made about the use of land for various purposes (eg: residential, public/green spaces, industrial zones, etc.). Even Genplan doesn’t provides this information.

The idea of working with data about houses that have been repaired in 2011-2012 years (slide 2, 3 in Space Chapter) was to explore the opportunities of Google Fusion Tables, that permits one to map address information.However it gave us an intresting observation:it turned out that Moscow government cares a lot about make-up of the city-center.Concentration of the blue dots in the middle of the map proves that with no words and the diagram shows that quantity of repaired houses in the center is unproportionally bigger than in other districts. For sure, there is a historical explanation for these results - the massive of houses in the central administrative okrug is the oldest one.

In general, the budget for cities comes from tax receipts and from federal and state governments. It is used to fulfil city programmes, pay for wages to city employ-ees, social services, education, public safety, benefits and pensions.

Moscow’s city budget for 2013 is estimated to be 1.695 trillion rubles (http://www.mos.ru/en/press-center/news/index.php?id_4=22989&tag_4=760), as such, the despite more than doubling its size, spending hasn’t increased by much.

The New York City budget is the largest municipal budget in the United States. Despite this, it Moscow’s budget exceeded that of NYC in 2008, though this was probably be-cause of the weak US Dollar (data in excel sheet).

Data for city budgets are not difficult to find as they need to be scrutinised and ap-proved.

Economy intro(city budgets)

The initial idea was to investigate the dynamics of the economic situation in Mos-cow and Russia throughout the 20th century. About 50 links were found but none had enough reliable information.

The next idea was to compare GRP with Human Development Index and level of cor-ruption. Available data is not enough for adequate analysis. No exact data on corruption exists, except for Transparency International reports.

Thus, apart from how the federal budget forms Moscow budget, data was gathered on who works in Moscow, and where.

While Moscow is no longer an industrial city, the largest portion of its GRP is from trade and services, in which a majority of the population is employed.

Additionally, it is interesting to find out about the structure of the labor population and how it has been changing throughout 20th century.

Economy conclusions

The budget for the city of Moscow has increased dramatically in the past10 years by a whopping 640%. This stands in contrast to New York City,whose budget has not even doubled in the same amount of time.

Moscow is the only city whose budget shrank year-on-year in this period,between 2008-2010, probably because of the financial crisis, though thisdid not affect the budgets of other cities analysed.

Would be interesting to compare the growth rates of cities against thegrowth in their budgets. I’m guessing that New Delhi has been growingmuch faster than Moscow in the past 10 years, though its city budgethasn’t increased as much.

It might also be interesting to investigate the balance of payments betweenthe city and the federal government/state and the tax burden of cities.
