5 Ways to Cool Your Home for Less this SummerAs summer approaches in the Permian Basin, energy bills will rise along with

the temperature, and knowing how to cool your home in a way that won’t

break the bank is — dare we say — even more important than knowing where

to get the best raspas in town.

Making a few updates to a home’s insulation and AC units can make a big

impact on energy costs, especially for larger homes. Buying Energy Star

appliances will save on utilities, but there are also cost-saving methods you can

adopt with the appliances you already own.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, there are five simple ways to keep

the cool in, keep the heat out and save money doing both.

Utilize wind and windows When night falls and the

temperature drops, the U.S.Dept. of Energy recommends

turning off your cooling systemand opening your windows. Inthe morning, windows andblinds should be shut to trap

cold air inside. Effective window coverings

are equally important topreventing heat build-up in thehome. In fact, when completelyclosed and lowered on a sunnywindow, highly reflective blindscan reduce heat gain by about 45percent.Ventilation is the least

expensive and most energy-efficient way to cool anybuilding, notes the U.S. Dept. ofEnergy.

Be thermostat vigilantWhen you leave the house,

remember to lower thethermostat, allowing the houseto go uncooled while you’reaway. However, be sure to setthe thermostat to a temperaturethat’s comfortable for any pets.

The U.S. Dept. of Energyrecommends lowering thethermostat to 78 degreesFahrenheit only when you are athome and need cooling. Thedepartment also aims to the bustthe myth that drasticallylowering the temperature, say to58 degrees, will cool the housedown faster — It will not.Setting the thermostat to anexcessively low temperatureonly adds to your energy bill. Additionally, lamps and TV

sets should not be placed nearthermostats due to the fact thatthermostats sense heat fromthese appliances, which can thencause AC units to run longerthan intended.For those with a routine

schedule, a programmablethermostat can automatically

Know how best to use your fansBecause fans cool individuals,

and not the space within a home,by creating a wind chill effect,having them on in an emptyroom is a waste of energy.Reversely, fans can also save onenergy costs when used wherethey’re needed most. When combined with air

conditioning, a ceiling fan canallow you to raise the thermostatabout 4 degrees Fahrenheit withno reduction in comfort,according to the U.S. Dept. ofEnergy.Fans should also be used to

remove heat and humidity frombathrooms after a shower, inkitchens after cooking, and in

laundry rooms after washingand drying. Fans can be used forspot ventilation throughout thehome.

Maintain cooling systems Reading the owner’s manual

for your air conditioner orevaporative cooler is paramountto know how best to operate andmaintain the unit.Replacing a dirty or clogged

filter with a clean one can loweryour air conditioner's energyconsumption by up to 15percent, according to the U.S.Dept. of Energy. It’s recommended to clean or

replace your cooling system'sfilter or filters every one to twomonths during the coolingseason. However, filters mayneed to be replaced more often

if the air conditioner is inconstant use, is subjected todusty conditions, or you havefur-bearing pets in the house. To ensure your cooling

system is running at itsmaximum efficiency, scheduleregular maintenance with acertified HVAC technician.

Be aware of the devices that generate heatOnly about 10 percent to 15

percent of the electricity thatincandescent lights consumeresults in light: the rest is turnedinto heat, according to the U.S.Dept. of Energy. This meansthat the more lights that are onin the house, the hotter it’s goingto be inside. It’s best to install lighting that

runs cooler. LED light bulbs

emit very little heat, unlikeincandescent bulbs whichrelease 90 percent of theirenergy as heat and CFLs whichrelease about 80 percent of theirenergy as heat.Other devices that add heat to

the home when plugged in andon include TVs, stereos,computers, dyers, dishwashers,ovens, curling irons, and hairdryers. Use of these devicesshould be kept to a minimum tokeep the space cool.On the hottest days this

summer, the U.S. Dept. ofEnergy recommends you avoidusing the oven and instead cookon the stove, in a microwave oron a grill outside — A top tierexcuse to throw a barbecue.
