2 The Consumer News Welcomes You to the Market on Central • June 5, 2013

"Look! I have June 8th, the first Market on Central on my phone'scalendar" was a greeting I received a couple of weeks ago. Whata great example of the anticipation for another season that willtransform our Historic Downtown into a special Village of vendorsfrom across the State of Iowa. Here you will be able to Come forBreakfast, Stay for Lunch and Take Home Dinner.

Each Market on Central, our Historic Downtown is transformed intoa Farmers Market where you will find farm fresh produce, eggs, honey, freshly baked items, meat vendors selling beef , pork, chick-ens and more, jams and jellies, wine from a local vineyard, cheesecake, goat cheese, various jewelry, unique photography, claypottery, gourmet imported chocolates, handmade wooden flutesand bowls, popcorn, stained glass, wooden barn quilts, bows andtutus, cotton candy, rag rugs, hostas and perennials - and the listgoes on and on. Vendors this year will travel from Omaha, IowaCity, Des Moines, Forest City, Graettinger, Geneva, Grundy Center,Lake City and all points in between.

Last year we had approximately 40,000 visitors over the 8 dayevent. The Red Hat Ladies stolled the area, a Flash Mob suddenlyappeared and entertained the crowd, a wedding party was seentaking pictures of the Bride and Groom and rain drops just had vis-itors pull out their umbrellas. Nothing could dampen the enthusi-asm at Market on Central.

Our Market Ambassadors representing various organizations in ourcommunity will greet you at our entrance points Once you enterour special Village, you will find each Market on Central is centeredon a theme that will highlight area entertainment and activities. Our first theme for the Market this coming Saturday is appropriatelynamed Market on Central. The events for the morning will includea ribbon cutting and community leaders sounding the horn toannounce the start of our season. Don't be surprised when yousee history come alive with the Oakland Cemetery re-enactorsstrolling Central Avenue and telling you their stories about theirlives and contributions to our community. This year Steve Kerstenand Susan Ahlers Leman will portray Mr. and Mrs. GeorgeRingland and Jesse and Susan Helling will portray Mr. and Mrs.Walter Merryman. A must is a stop to visit our Fort Dodge FireDepartment and admire Old Glory flying high from the snorkeltruck.

New this year will be special events such as Iowans Fit for Life onJune 22nd where we will have community fitness centers with vari-ous fitness activities. Trinity Regional Medical Center Dieticians andIowa State University Extension will also be on hand to show how toprepare recipes with the fresh produce, how to properly freeze orcan produce and answer your questions. On September 28th theFort Dodge Daybreak and Noon Rotary will have the 5th AnnualApplefest Walk/Run 5K/10K start and finish at Market on Central. The Walk/Run will be using our new trail system and then presentthe awards at the Plaza during Market on Central.

Our Market on Central is much more than just a great place foryour family and to pick up fresh produce and a unique homemadeitem. It is a place for you to connect with the farmer that producesthat fresh produce and an opportunity to talk to that vendor thatmade those gourmet chocolates or hand turned a piece of pottery. You will see an emphasis on Farmer to Table education during our2013 season and encourage that engagement with our vendors.

Historic Downtown revitalization shows how community supportand creativity can reinvent the area and bring it back to life. Re-introducing Central Avenue to many who have not strolled thestreets for years and opening up the possibilities of new specialtyshops and services is all part of the revitalization plan. Over the lastyear we have seen several new businesses open downtown with awide variety of services that include home interiors, clothing andjewelry, quilts and antiques. You will want to be sure to stop by toacquaint yourselves to these new businesses while you are atMarket on Central.

The Market also functions as a small business incubator providingthe opportunity for a new entrepreneur to market ideas and prod-ucts to our visitors. They learn how to display and promote theirproducts, network with other vendors and listen to comments andsuggestions from customers. Many of our vendors will tell you that itjump-started their business for the entire year and many hired part-time and full-time staff to handle the increase in business. Vendorssuch as FD Cheesecake Lady opening a bakery in downtown FortDodge and Garden Winery revitalizing the Calendar School into adestination stop with a winery and vineyard, banquet facilities andweekly entertainment are direct examples of how Market on Centralhas played a part in strengthening our local economy.

Market on Central does not just happen. It has been organized andnurtured by a very dedicated committee of volunteers meetingweekly for the last three years and community support and sponsor-ship. The success of Market on Central shows the benefits of collab-oration and cooperation of businesses, the community and commu-nity leaders. In just our third year, Market on Central has continuesto grow and established itself as a family event and tourist destina-tion. Our website at www.fdmarketoncentral.com lists sponsors andsupporters that have helped to make this possible.

We invite you to visit our Historic Downtown and enjoy Iowa-grownand produced food and products along with a variety of entertain-ment that will add to your pleasure and enjoyment of Market onCentral. Bring the entire family and join us for an enjoyableSaturday morning. Be sure to mark your calendars for the secondand fourth Saturday from June to September. The dates are June8th and 22nd, July 13th and 27th, August 10th and 24th andSeptember 14th and 28th. We are looking forward to seeing youat Fort Dodge's newest tradition - Market on Central.
