15 Years in jail for murderA 34-year-old Zimbabwean man, who made newspaper headlines after stoning another man some two years ago, was sentenced to 15 years in the Thohoyandou High Court a fortnight ago.

Peter Nengovhela was jailed for stoning to death a well-known pot maker, Mr Tixaniso Thomas Mang-anyi (36), at Rathidili-fhasi-ha-bada, in Madombidzha.

The incident happened in March

2013. Manganyi originally came from Mozambique.

People who arrived at the scene shortly after the accused had run away described him as a “heartless man” who “has no soul in his body”.

Tshilwavhusiku police’s spokes-person, Const Munyadziwa Marindi, said that the conclusion of each case brought relief to the investigating team, the police station and the family of the deceased. Peter Nengovhela.

Suspect in hospital after rape attemptA suspected rapist had the tables turned on himself last Wednesday when his victim started fighting back. He ended up in hospital after an-other person arrived at the scene and knocked him on the head with a stone.

A 41-year-old woman from Dzanani (Biaba) in Nzhelele described to Limpopo Mirror this week how she battled with the man who allegedly attempted to rape her.

She was on her way to her place of work in the early morning hours when the man approached her. She explained that she works at an electrical installation project and needs to be there early in the morning. On her way to work, she passes through some bushes near Tshirolwe village.

The sun had just started to rise when the alleged rapist approached her with a knife in his hand. He threatened to stab the woman if she did not follow his instructions. According to the lady, the man told her that he wanted to rape her and instructed her to go into the bushes.

“I asked him why, even though he wanted to rape me, he should be that violent, but he insisted that if I did not follow his instructions he would kill me,” she said.

The man then ordered his victim to undress and stand in a position that would assist him to commit the evil deed.

The woman, however, opted to wait for a suitable opportunity and fight back. She managed to push the knife away from the man when he started to pull down his pants. She then grabbed him by the tes-ticles while simultaneously screaming for help. “I shouted for help and continued to pull him, hoping someone would see us and call the police,” she said.

A man who was passing by heard the screams and rushed to the woman’s assistance. From what could be gathered, he took a stone and hit the al-leged rapist on his head. He then called the police, who arrived shortly afterwards and made an arrest.

The suspect was charged with an attempted rape but was initially admitted to Siloam hospital as a result of the injuries he suffered during the incident. On Saturday, he was transferred to the Polokwane provincial hospital, since his condition had worsened.

The police confirmed the incident and said a 37-year-old suspect was in custody. “He is behind bars. He was released from hospital and he is

also facing other charges,” said Mphephu police spokesperson W/O Lazarus Netshidzati. According to Netshidzati, the man immediately admitted to the police that he had wanted to rape the woman.

Gospel band for “pastor” SikhwariSelf-proclaimed pastor Music Kimberly Charles K Sikhwari visited the offices of the Mirror a few weeks ago, urging the editorial team to publish his photo on the front page.

“Because I love you very much, I speak with God and Jesus Christ and ask them to bless it so that it can sell, hence I am sending this photo and you must publish it and you will see miracles in your newspaper this year,” he said. Sikhwari said that he was well known for his dancing style in areas such as Dzanani.

“I call myself the host Gospel Jiver, because I know how to sing and dance gospel songs,” he said. “But now I am busy - I want to build my own gospel singers group, called God and Jesus Christ are the best voice of healings (Tshedza tsha Mudzimu na Yesu) Gospel Singers.

Electricity for Mahatlani’s residentsThe residents of Mahatlani village, near Masakona, will soon have electricity in their homes, after a daunting 12 years of living in the darkness.

Limpopo Mirror visited the village recently and found a group of women sitting in the shade at the back of a house. They were talking excitedly about the electricity which would light up their dark section.

It seems the contractors are nearly done with the project, as electric poles and main boxes have been erected and installed.

“Each time when I look at the main switch box in my house, I just smile, knowing that electricity is on its way to us,” said Ms Khawurisa Mathevu-la (54). “We have been without electricity for years here. Some challenges we were facing included putting our meat in the fridges of people on the other side of the village who had electricity in their houses.”

Ms Dangisani Nkuna (23) said she was addict-ed to social media and mobile Internet as a youth who always needed information to get updated on current affairs. “But then it’s difficult because I have to walk four kilometres to charge my phone in the home of people who have electricity.”

Nkuna added that she was happy that electricity was finally on their doorstep.

Another resident, Ms Evelyn Makamu (50), expressed her joy and said she couldn’t wait for the day when the Makhado Municipality would

officially come and activate the electricity. “We will now enjoy cold soft drinks,” she said.

The spokesperson for the Makhado Munici-pality, Mr Louis Bobodi, said that the electricity would be activated at the end of March.

Mesdames Khawurisa Mathevula, Dangisani Nkuna and Evelyn Makamu are excited at the prospect of having electricity activated in their homes.

The Makhado Municipality, through its spokes-person Mr Louis Bobodi, this week confirmed that municipal manager, Mr Sakkie Mutshin-yali, is still trying to get to grips with what he can only describe as a failed attempt on his life a fortnight ago.

According to information available to the Lim-popo Mirror, the attempt occurred late on the after-noon of Saturday, 21 February. Being fond of the farming life, Mutshinyali stays on a homestead near the Cloud’s End Hotel just outside Louis Trichardt. He believes in living an active life and frequently goes jogging in the afternoons. His decision to do so on that day changed his life forever.

Mutshinyali granted the Limpopo Mirror an interview on Monday regarding the events of that fateful day. It was not easy for him to talk about it. “When people focus their eyes on you to eliminate you, you do not feel comfortable,” Mutshinyali said. He acknowledged, however, that the incident should be reported upon.

In the days leading up to the attempt on his life, numerous people reported spotting a suspi-cious-looking black VW Golf slowly frequenting the farm roads in the area. “On the evening of the 20th, I drove back to town to pick up my child from school. About 600m from my home, I also spotted the Golf, which was driving very slowly. When we reached the N1, he turned left and I turned right,” Mutshinyali said.

The following day, Mutshinyali had to attend a funeral in the morning, returning home in the afternoon. Just after 17:00, he decided to go for a jog. “At the curve in the road at Willie Scheepers’ farm, I saw a neatly dressed man, obviously not a farm worker, walking. He asked me if he could get access to Willie’s compound to get water as his car had overheated. I showed him the gate,” Mutshinyali said. The man went in to collect water, while Mutshinyali continued on his jog, passing the suspicious Golf parked next to the road.

“As I came back, I saw that the car was still parked there and thought to myself that I should at least stop and assist,” Mutshinyali said. At that stage, there were five people at the car - Mutshin-yali, the owner of the Golf and three of Scheepers’ farm workers.

“I asked the man what the problem was and he indicated that his vehicle was overheating. When I asked him where it was overheating, he pointed to the bottom of the car. That did not make sense. If the car had overheated, he would have pointed to the radiator in front of the engine,” Mutshinyali said.

Mutshinyali got suspicious and asked the man where he was really going when Mutshinyali first spotted him. “He told me he was looking for this guy who works for the municipality and gives ten-ders, indicating that he was sent there by a woman,” Mutshinyali said.

Immediately when the man told him this, two more men appeared from the bushes next to the road. They were also neatly dressed and clearly not farm workers. Mutshinyali said he thought that they would pass by, but the two men stopped at the car. They were now seven people.

At that stage, Mutshinyali was still in conversation with the man he had initially spotted, trying to find out who had sent him and what he meant by “the guy giving tenders”. He told the man that if he w a n t e d a tender, he should go to the municipali-ty and follow p r o c e d u r e . During their c o n v e r s a t i o n , one of the two men who had come from the bushes continuously in-terrupted the conversation. “I ended up asking the guy what his problem was,” said Mutshinyali. The moment Mutshinyali asked the man this, he turned around, opened the rear door of the Golf, took out a handgun and cocked it. At that stage, Mutshinyali was not even standing a metre away from the man. “He swore and pointed the firearm at me,” Mutshinyali said.

Mutshinyali and the farm workers immediately ran for cover into the bushes. “I did not look back. The only thing I wanted to do was to get as far away as possible from the men. I am a 50-year-old man who had just run six kilometres and I was tired,” Mutshinyali said.

Mutshinyali made his way back to his home, from where he alerted the police. “I must thank the police. They were there within 20 minutes,” Mut-shinyali said. By that time, however, the suspects had already fled the scene.

Mutshinyali, a deeply religious man, afterwards reflected on the day’s events. “If he had had the intention to kill me, he could have. Maybe it was an intervention from God. I cannot explain why he did not shoot me. Maybe they wanted to kidnap me but realised there were too many eyewitness. The farmworkers’ presence really saved my life,” Mut-shinyali said. Later he heard that the farm workers had decided to walk back with the man who had asked them for water as they became suspicious when they saw a huge knife strapped to the man’s waist. “When they asked him what it was for, he said he used it to eat apples,” Mutshinyali said.

Mutshinyali said he was overwhelmed by the support he received from the community after the attack. This, he said, was a real eye-opener. “My house was full of white people, by number more than the police, wanting to protect me,” Mutshin-yali said. He had high regard for the quick and professional way the farm watch responded and the selfless effort they made to secure his safety. He also had praise for his fellow congregation members of the Agapé Church, especially pastor Grant and his wife, who consoled and supported him after the attack. “Thank you, also, Susan Coro-to and Marika de Villiers. They immediately went

into prayer for me,” Mutshinyali said.Mutshinyali also thanked Mayor David Mu-

tavhatsindi. “He phoned every two hours to find out how I was doing,” Mutshinyali said. Support also streamed in from members of the ANC’s regional and provincial committee.

“To all the people who consoled and supported me, I would like to thank you. I feel like I have joined a good family,” Mutshinyali said.

The Makhado police confirmed the incident last week, stating that they had opened a case of the pointing of a firearm.

By the time of our going to press, it was not known if any arrests with regard to the case had been made. In the meantime, security measures in the Cloud’s End area have been intensified. “Extra precautions are being taken by both the farm watch and the police,” Mutshinyali said.

Was it a failed attempt on the life of Makhado municipal manager?

Parents remove children from unsafe schoolAngry parents of pupils attend-ing school at the dilapidated Khubvi Primary School have removed their children from the school, saying they fear for their safety.

The parents, who braved early morning showers, have vowed not to return their children until the school, which has been de-clared a safety hazard, is fixed. The school, located at Khubvi outside Thohoyandou, is no lon-ger safe and collapsing and the walls full of big cracks.

School governing body secre-tary Evelyn Nenguda-Makhuvha said they had liaised with the education department on nu-merous occasions, but they only “got empty promises”. “There is a serious need for a new school here. Just look, our classes are all cracked, some with the entire

roofing caved in, which leaves our educators and children at risk and always faced with danger.”

She added that earlier this year they had reminded the de-partment of the promises of new classes, “but we feel our children cannot continue learning under these circumstances. We are left with no other option but to withdraw them for their safety, and until such time that the gov-ernment listens to us, we will not let our children to come here.”

According to her, they provid-ed the department a deadline of seven days to react, “and if they do not listen to us, we will be left with no option but to march to the head office in Polokwane.”

Nenguda-Makhuvha also condemned the department’s officials, who she said were un-cooperative and undermining the

community. She said they wanted a full investigation by the MEC to investigate what had gone wrong with their project. “As a community, we demand 12 class-rooms, an administrative block, a hall, laboratory, library, kitchen, dinning hall and a guard room,” she said. The spokesperson for the Department of Education, Mr Paena Galane, said they had met the leaders of the community and had told them of the department’s plans. “We are in the process of providing mobile classes to all schools that have the need, and Khubvi Primary is one of the schools that have been identified for that project. We are worried about the issue of removing chil-dren from the school. Removing children from the classrooms is denying them their future and we strongly condemn that,” he said.

Would-be rapist almost beaten to death

A big rock is one of the weapons the angry residents used on the man.

What was supposed to be an opportunity to display their power and humiliate a woman turned into a nightmare and a moment of shame for three men, with one of them ending up almost being beaten to death.

The incident happened on Friday around 17:00, next to a busy traffic light at Maniini, close to Acacia Park, and attracted many residents who were coming from work.

It is alleged that a schoolgirl, who was on her way home from school in Maniini, was waylaid by three men, who forced her into nearby bushes, where they tried to rape her. While they were dragging her to the bushes, the girl screamed at the top of her voice, which alerted passersby, who came to her rescue. The three men then ran into the nearby bushes, with one of them hiding under a nearby bridge. After some time the man al-legedly emerged from his hiding place, and that was when people who were still search-ing for them found him. He was subjected to instant justice by his captors and was hit with any object they could find. He was stoned and stripped of all his clothing by the angry mob, who want-ed to kill him before the police arrived.

He was seriously injured and was only rescued by the police, who had to use rubber bullets to disperse the angry crowd. Rumour has it that the man is a former prisoner who served 15 years in pris-

on and is out on parole.Angry women shouted that he should be cas-

trated, so that he could not rape again. The naked man was bleeding profusely and later taken to hospital. “We are tired of these criminals. Our girls are always victims, and we are no longer safe when we go to work or are on our way from work. These crooks rob us of our belongings and we are helpless as women. Even the police are do-ing nothing to protect us,” an angry woman said.

Thohoyandou police spokesperson Major Mashudu Malelo said they had opened a case of attempted rape. “At this stage, we cannot confirm whether the man is an ex-prisoner out on parole. This will form part of our investigation, and the suspect we have is in hospital under police guard,” he said.

“Exceptional and enjoyable” pageant The outgoing Miss Madombid-zha Arsenal FC, Phathutshedzo Mudau, said her experience was exceptional and enjoyable.

“This beauty pageant is one thing that local models should not take for granted. The relationship I formed with my competitors and soccer players was beyond winning the competition,” she said.

She acknowledged that what she had learnt through the competition was that beauty went beyond a beau-tiful body and pretty face.

“Sometimes you just need to devel-op the best mental attitude in life and compete with the best,” she added.

The 18-year-old model from Louis Trichardt started her tertiary studies

at the Monash University in Gauteng earlier this year.

Last year, the queen won various prizes, complementing the purpose of the beauty pageant, which coincides with the team’s fundraising. Prepa-rations for this year’s beauty pageant are already at peak stage, with prizes better than last.

The event organiser and team secretary, Mr Trinity Tshivhula, ap-pealed to all potential local sponsors to call him on 082 668 8887.

Interested ladies between the ages of 15 and 21 can access entry forms at Louis Trichardt Vodashop in the Checkers centre, Litshovhu Second-ary School, and Sididzha Bakery in Madombidzha village. Ms Phathutshedzo Mudau.

Hlalelani school on the brink of collapseWhat used to be the cleanest and most admirable school in Waterval is now on the brink of collapse.

Some of the classrooms at the Hlalelani Primary School don’t have a roof any more. The roof was extensively damaged during a storm in August 2013. Floors inside some of the classrooms have holes in them and the toilets are in a state of decay.

Efforts by the school to try and fix the damage have been in vain, as the extent of the problem is simply too big. This has left the school governing body (SGB) and parents wondering if the state of the sanitation and classrooms is suitable for their children’s daily learning.

The chairperson of the SGB, Mr Andy Munyai, said they had alerted the Limpopo Department of Education on numerous oc-casions in an attempt to fix the school, but to no avail.

“We have sent many letters to the department, hoping the situ-ation will be solved, but nothing has happened,” said Mr Munyai. The school currently accommo-dates 578 pupils from Waterval.

“The department promised us last year that they would start renovating the school this year, whilst the pupils will be using temporary mobile classes,” said Munyai.

One of the teachers, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the school had not been reno-

vated since its inception in 1981. “They recently promised us that they would renovate the build-ings, but nothing has happened. The inspector even visited the school, but we are still waiting,” said the teacher.

The spokesperson of the Lim-popo Department of Education, Mr Paena Galane, said that the department was facing a backlog in terms of repairing infrastruc-ture. “It is well known that our budget has been reduced. This school, however, is one of many schools that will be fixed this year,” said Mr Galane.

He added that more than 387 schools in the province had al-ready been completed since the beginning of this year.

“All the Zimbabweans must leave” - Block G

Shoes for all the barefoot pupils

Angry residents who took to the streets of Block G, ordering Zimbabweans to leave. They are blamed for the rising crime in the area.

Katlego Makgobole put a shoe on the foot of a Grade 2 pupil, Solani Mphaphuli, on Friday.

Katlego Makgobole put a shoe on the foot of a Grade 2 pupil, Solani Mphaphuli, on Friday.

During the past month, havoc was caused in Thohoyandou when locals retaliated after a local man was attacked by Zimbabweans, who had robbed him of his trolley full of grocer-ies meant for his spaza shop.

During a hunt for Zimbabwe-ans that ensued, the town of Thohoyandou was turned upside down by angry protestors, who blockaded streets with rocks, dustbins and any other thing they could find. The message was loud and clear that Zimba-bweans were no longer wanted in Thohoyandou.

They have been blamed for most of the crimes happening in town and the surrounding villages.

As if that was not enough, angry residents at Block G Ex-tension, a section of the Thohoy-andou township, are also blaming Zimbabweans for the spiralling

crime in their area.During the past fortnight,

angry residents went from house to house that had been identified as occupied by Zimbabweans, telling them to vacate these premises as they were no longer wanted. Community members were angered by the rampant crime taking place in their area.

In most of the cases, the same people identified as Zimbabwe-ans were said to be the suspects. One of them was caught in the act and was punished by the community.

On his return from hospital, the man and his friends are alleged to have continued with their evil deeds. “We have had enough of these people who cannot reciprocate our humility here in Vhembe. Only a few houses have not been burgled in this area and in most cases, the culprits have been identified

as being same people. The last straw was when a family woke up to find their whole house empty last Sunday. As a community, we could not just sit and relax while we are no longer safe. In some instances, the suspects also fired shots, which means they are well armed and can also kill,” said Mr Athifhelimbilu Munyai, the local civic secretary.

Munyai said people should not see them as xenophobic but as people who want the rule of law to be adhered to. “We are not fighting Zimbabweans; that is why we are giving them a chance to pack their things and go to other places. We are also not ruling out the possibility that they could be working with our own children here. We are giving a stern warning that we will soon find them and the consequences will not be good for them,” he said.

A 22-year-old young man is de-termined provide shoes for all the barefoot pupils at the local school, so that no child goes to school with bare feet.

Although Katlego Makgobole had not experienced the pain of going to school barefoot as a youngster himself, he knows the pain and frustration which these pupils have to face every day.

“It came to my attention that there were pupils who still went to school without shoes. I felt great pain when I noticed an 11-year-old girl running to school on a cold, rainy morning.”

Katlego stopped the girl and asked her why she had no shoes

on. She told him her unemployed mother couldn’t afford to buy her shoes.

“I asked if she did not receive a social support grant,” he said. “She honestly told me that that money was used for food – and nothing was left after that. I had never felt such an acute pain in my heart.”

From that day, he decided to help pupils without shoes. Last Friday he donated pairs of shoes to pupils at Masedi Combined School in Tshikota, outside Louis Trichardt.

“Many people out there may not be aware that the high rate of juvenile crime is caused by the

massive drop-out rate,” he said. “Barefooted pupils are laughed at by other pupils, so they do not feel safe at school, and finally they drop out.”

He said that once these pupils had quit school, they are exposed to the harsh realities of the life in the street.

They learn to smoke, drink alcohol and take drugs.

“Once they have started using illegal substances, they will nor-mally steal to maintain the habit to stay high,” he said. “Today I am happy to contribute to the children’s livelihood in this small, poor community where there’s a high unemployment

The Werda Toyota team last week thanked Mrs Netshosumewa from the Vhembe TVET College for the college’s support. The college bought 15 brand new Toyota Corollas from Werda. In the photo is the college team with Mr Eddie Schlesinger (dealer principal) and some of the new Corollas.

rate.”The principal for the

school, Mr Silas Makh-wathana, said the situ-ation where pupils did not have proper school uniforms always caused a serious problem in the school.

Katlego said he want-ed to extend his proj-ect, Feed the Hungry Community Develop-ment Foundation, to providing food parcels to vulnerable and needy pupils and households.

“We need to care for one another as commu-nity members,” he said.

Awards for the top achieversThere was joy when the top achiev-ers in the Hlanganani South Circuit were given awards for their out-standing performance during the 2014 matric results. The event took place at the Tiyani Assemblies of God Church last Wednesday.

About 600 pupils from different secondary and primary schools in the area were ferried to the venue to receive certificates and trophies, while the top schools received cash.

A motivator, Pastor Striker Manga-nyi, told pupils how they had defeated the odds to become successful in life.

He said the pupils can only succeed if they worked hard, planned well and remained focused. The “role models” included engineers, businessmen and medical doctors from rural villages around the area, and all had a similar story to tell: “One can succeed despite

one’s background”.Marhorhwani Malali High was

crowned as the overall best school in the circuit, with a 97.6% pass rate and received R20 000 and a trophy. Tshinange (second) with a 90.6% pass rate went home with R10 000.

The donor, Dr Nkhelebeni Phas-wana of Kalahari Booksellers, en-couraged the youth to take education seriously, so that they can face the challenges of the future with ease. He encouraged the parents to cooperate with the Department of Education and other stakeholders for the benefit of education in the country. He said it was important to set up realistic goals that could be achieved within a given period in life. “Failure does not necessarily mean that one has to stop pursuing your dreams.”

The former chairperson of Arts and Culture in the curcuit, Mr Phineus Valoyi (centre) received a trophy from Dr Risimati Chabalala (left) and Vhamusanda Vho-Thifheli Tshivhase. He received the trophy for his role in encouraging pupils to preserve their culture.

The manager of Kalahari Booksellers, Dr Nkhelebeni Phaswana, presents R35 000 to the best schools. From left to right are: Ms Mavis Bungane, Mr Mashudu Munugufhala (circuit manager), Mr Calvin Tshikovhi (Tshinange High), Dr Nkhelebeni Phaswana, Mr Samuel Maholiela (Marhorhwani Malali High) and Ms Dimatso Ravhuanzwo.

Twenty disadvantaged pupils from different schools recently received school uniforms from Itsani Home-Based Care and Aids Awareness. Nine pupils also received food parcels, enough for a month, during a ceremony at Itsani. In our photograph, beneficiaries, members of Itsani Home-Based Care and the guest speaker, Pastor Tshamano Nemudzudzanyi (standing right), rejoice during the handing-over ceremony.

A group of poets from across South Africa and overseas descended on Timbila Writers’ Village on Thursday for the inaugural Vhembe International Poetry Festival.

The festival runs from 5 to 7 March at Shirley village and some selected areas around Elim. “The aim is to give a platform for poets from South Africa and overseas to present their work, but also to interact with Vhembe’s cultural life and heritage,” says Timbila’s director and celebrated poet Vonani Bila. “Part of the aim of the festival is to promote poetry in our indigenous languages, and not just in English.”

The event is being organised by the Timbila Po-etry Project, with support from the Mzanzi Golden Economy (Department of Arts and Culture).

“All South Africa’s languages will be repre-sented and there will be poets from all over the country,” he said. “We will also have the Finnish poet Maaria Päivinen, who will read her work in Finnish and its English translation.”

Bila said that Vhembe refl ected so much that was positive and dynamic about the new South Africa, but also a lot about what was wrong. “The protests in Malamulele sparked by the lack

of services expressed frustrations that you fi nd everywhere in this area,” says Bila.

The festival will feature seasoned poets Mxolisi Nyezwa (Eastern Cape) and the founding editor of Kotaz lit mag, Max Marhanele - often regard-ed as the Xitsonga Shakespeare because of his depth of language and poetry - Allan Horwitz - a former trade union organiser and co-founder of Botsotso mag, and Ike Wangu Muila - a notable performance poet who fuses Tshivenda, Isicamtho (Tsotsitaal) and English.

They will lock horns with young performance poets such as Hector Kunene (Free State), Charmaine Mrwebi (Free State), and local poets Gudani Ramikosi and Given Mukwevho, who work in Tshivenda. “There will also be several other young poets who will perform,” he said.

Other key poets who have established them-selves in South Africa and who will be part of this festival include Goodenough Mashego, Ayanda Billie, Siza Nkosi and Moses Mtileni.

“Vuyisile Msila, a poet and scholar from Unisa, and originally from the Eastern Cape, will give the keynote address on the relevance of socially engaging poetry today.”

As he was born into a religious family, it was natural that Tendamudzimu Dagada would follow gospel music as is the trend in the country.

Tendamudzimu, or Tenda as he is widely known in music circles, the fi rst-born son of Bishop Isaac Dagada of the Worship House and a member of the popular gospel ensemble, took an unusual route when he released a house album. The album, Deeper Love, is fast penetrating the hearts of house-music lovers.

Released just two weeks ago, the album has become the talk of the town, with no function complete without tracks from the album being played. The 11-track album, which has strong songs like the title track, Deeper Love, Forever and Stay among the good. Tracks are sung in Venda, Zulu and English. Tenda has made it clear that he will not be lost to the gospel music scene or the Worship House gospel group.

“Worship House is my home; it groomed me to become what I am today, and I will always be part of its recordings. People should not be surprised that I sing house music. Music will always be music and it must be noted that I included gospel tracks on the album. I am from a very religious family and I will never forsake my upbringing; the church is where I belong,” said the law graduate.

Dagada, who started singing at school in the church choir and also at Worship House, said his aim was to touch all hearts and preach the message

of love and the gospel of Jesus Christ through music. “Some love house gospel, some love Af-rican, and that is why I came up with the house album. It is making a big impact in the music industry. We entertain them while, at the same time, bringing them to the fold of God,” he said.

Dagada further urged artists not go the short route to fame but to work hard and to be patient and come up with quality music.

He further indicated that he took a whole year to prepare for the album and worked with the likes of DJ Style, Eric Bongz, and Rogan Kelsely. Dagada’s secret to success is to believe in oneself, ask God to help you through and to obey one’s parents.

More police arrested on corruption charges

By Elmon Tshikhudo

Pupils and animals share the last water of the MbwediWith drought all over the country, water has become one of the scarcest resources in many areas.

For the community of Tshidzini outside Tho-hoyandou, who mostly depend on water from the Mbwedi River, the situation is desperate as the river is almost dry. The residents, who go for weeks without water, say on weekends the situation becomes chaotic at the river, with schoolchildren and parents and even animals aiming for positions at the river. Residents say the river has been their last hope as the government cannot provide them with water.

“Water has been a persistent problem for years here. The government installed taps here, but they remain dry most of the times. We sometimes get water once in a fortnight and our source has been this river, despite the fact that we have to compete with animals for water. Just today we killed two big snakes on those rocks and there are crocodiles roaming around which put our lives at risk,” says Ms Nyambeni Mudau.

The community has engaged the government on many occasions, and they have lost hope as they also see the lo-cal councilor using the same river water.

“If our councilor is forced to use river wa-ter, it means the govern-ment is unable to pro-vide water. We will use this dirty water as there is nothing we can do,” Mudau says, adding that people sometimes fight during weekends for spaces to do their washing.

Mr Matodzi Ralushai, Vhembe District Mu-nicipality’s spokesper-son, confirmed that the water situation is bad at the area, but said it had changed for the better recently. “Yes, we know of their plight, and that water is not available on a daily ba-sis is true. These people

have to share with the Tshaulu residents and when water comes, they store it in big drums and the river water is only used for washing. We are, however, improv-ing the situation all the time as new resrvoirs are built and money is set aside for boreholes.”

He emphasised that as they are trying to provide water in some vil lages, “vil lagers themselves are destroy-ing the infrastructure.”

Photo left:The accused from left to right are Const P e r c y B a l o y i , Const Cynthia Ma sete and WO M u k o n d e l e l i Mu t e l e in the holding cells of the Louis Trichardt M a g i s t r a t e ’ s Court.

Three more policemen were arrested for alleged-ly helping to smuggle stolen vehicles across the South African border.

The three officers, stationed at the Pafuri port of entrance, were apprehend last Thursday.

According to provincial police spokesperson Col Ronel Otto, they had allegedly received money in exchange for their help to smuggle the vehicles into Zimbabwe.

Shortly after their arrest, WO Mukondeleli Mutele (45), Const Percy Baloyi (30) and Const Cynthia Masete (32) appeared in the Louis Trich-ardt District Court on charges relating to bribery and corruption. Otto could not confirm the duration of the alleged smuggling, or how many other police officers were paid to help the three suspects.

Mutele, Baloyi and Masete were caught in a police trap that was set for them as part of a year-long investigation.

After their brief court appearance, Mutele and Masete were both released on R7 500 each. Baloyi, who allegedly received a second bribe and was charged twice, was released on R15 000 bail (R7 500 on each count).

Otto said the investigation into the alleged smuggling continued and would determine how many stolen vehicles had been smuggled across the border.

All three accused immediately paid their bail. Their case was postponed until 27 March for further investigation. In the meantime, Mutele, Baloyi and Masete will be suspended, pending an internal police inves-tigation. In December last year, 19 Limpopo policemen were arrested for allegedly helping to smuggle illegal ciga-rettes. Following their arrest, Lieutenant Gen-eral Fannie Masemola, the provincial police chief, said there was no place for corrupt members.

An expensive townMusina is one of the most expensive towns to live in if you have to rent a property.

This is according to the latest quarterly rental index released by PayProp, an automated trans-actional platform for the South African property management industry.

PayProp is endorsed by the Institute of Es-tate Agents and sets the standard for speed and accuracy of payments, cost and payment status transparency, complete transactional control, and regulatory compliance. Their rental index is based on extensive research that tracks a series of indices from real-time transaction data to provide the only comprehensive view of the state of the residential rental market.

According to this index, the border town north of the Soutpansberg is the fourth-most expensive town, with an average rent of R17 634 per month.

PayProp CEO Louw Liebenberg said that he initially expected Gauteng and the Western Cape to lead the pack in terms of average rentals, and the fact that towns in Limpopo such as Lephalale and Musina are coming out top is a result of demand outstripping supply. “It is another remarkable example of rapid industrial expansion in an area with low rental supply, causing dramatic shifts in the market,” he said.

Lephalale (formerly Ellisras), another mining town and where Eskom is building its Medupi power station, is the most expensive area to rent. The average amount of rent paid for property there is R23 327.

The future looks bright for Bono Siotho, a Grade 5 pupil from Mukula village. She will represent the Vhembe District Municipality in the 1 200m race during an event in Polokwane today (Friday). According to her teacher, Mr Nthanyiseni Munandi, “there is no doubt that she will proceed to participate at national level and it is possible that she will qualify to represent South Africa. She has the aggression and commitment to reach the highest level in athletics,” says Munandi. He says she is an all-rounder, who is also good in the 100m. Photo: Ndivhuwo Musetha.

Ndivhuwo “Segere” Ravhuhali was a marvel to watch when his side, Joe Express FC, crushed Dynamos 5-1 in their ABC Motsepe League match at the Giyani Stadium on Saturday.

Segere scored four goals in the game, while the fifth one was registered in Juliet Nguvhane’s name. He came on as a substitute for Levy Matshavha, who sustained an injury in the 15th minute.

At that stage, Express were leading 1-0. Segere scored two more goals to bring the half-time score to 3-0. He scored the other two in the opening min-utes of the last half. Dynamos responded through Bennet Hlungwane later in the game.

The victory pushed Joe Express to the sixth position on the log with 20 points.

Polokwane City will not easily forget what hap-pened to them last weekend. They were brutally walloped 1-6 by Magezi FC at the Seshego Sta-dium. Modimolle Aces were the hardest hit. They were mercilessly doomed 7-1 by Bellevue Winners Park at the Giyani Stadium. The convincing victory means that Bellevue are still on top of the log, two points ahead of Magezi FC.

In their Giyani derby that was staged at the Gi-yani Stadium on Sunday, Bilika All Stars continued to donate league points. This time around they were crushed 4-1 by Giyani Hotspurs. Things con-tinued to move from bad to worse for A1 Terrors last weekend. They could not stop The Dolphins, who beat them 5-1 at the Eldorado Stadium in Polokwane.

Although Lephalale Young Killers were the first to find the net, they could not absorb the pressure from Mighty FC to the bitter end. Young Killers were leading 1-0 at half time, but Mighty FC scored three goals as the game progressed. Great North FC were unstoppable when they beat the struggling Winners Park 3-1 at the Seshego Stadium.

Exciting soccer tournament for granniesNearly 30 soccer teams for elderly people played in the Mutakalo Wavho u Zwan-dani Zwavho fun tourna-ment, which was held at Mbhokota village on 25 February.

“We need our elderly to keep healthy and occupied in-stead of just sitting at home,” said the tournament’s spokes-person, Mr Sammy Musetsho.

Musetsho says that many of the teams still have a lack of soccer kits. “This makes them worry at times, but they love soccer so much that nothing will make them quit,” he said. “Being part of the management who organises this kind of fun tournament for the grannies is a blessing and it gives us pure delight.”

He says that, during the

fun tournament, there is no winning team. They play each match for 30 minutes (15 minutes per half). “It is like a fun walk, where it’s not about winning but involvement,” he says.

The teams travelled from different corners of the Thu-lamela and Makhado munici-palities and arrived in the host village in buses.

Mbhokota Bethesda’s chairperson, Ms Florence Chabalala (65), said that her team had enjoyed the match-es. “It gives us enough joy to say that we are involved in sports as the elderly,” she said. “Even our children and grandchildren support us and we thank them for that mutual support where they come to watch us play.”

Waterval team played against Mbokota Bethesda Elderly Care.

Mbokota Bethesda Ealderly Care, photographed before their match.

Mr Sammy Musetsho says that there is good progress in the Mutakalo Wavho u Zwandani Zwavho fun tournament.

Last weekend was one the two leading NFD teams, Lam-ontville Golden Arrows and Jomo Cosmos, both unexpect-edly dropped league points.

Pace setters, Golden Arrows, were held to a draw by African Wanderers in Phutaditshaba. Arrows were lucky to go back hom with a point in hand as Warriors were awarded a pen-alty towards the end of the first half. Striker Freddy Skhosana

shot wide from the white spot. Cosmos, shared the spoils with FC Cape Town. They played to a 1-1 draw in Cape Town.

Thanda Royal Zulu pushed Maluti FET College deeper into the relegation quagmire when they beat them 2-1 in Richardsbay.

Milano United shared the glory with Garankuwa United (2-2) in Cape Town.

Royal Eagles used their

home-ground advantage to beat Santos 2-1 at the King Zwelithini Stadium and Baroka FC beat Highlandspark 2-1 in Thembisa.

Back home, Black Leopards collected full points by beating Witbank Spurs 2-1 at the Tho-hoyandou Stadium. In their Cape Town derby at the Phil-ipi Stadium on Saturday, Cape Town All Stars beat Vasco da Gama 2-1.

NFD leaders drop valuable points

Ruggert Nyundu of Black Leopards.Sbusiso Mxoyana of Vasco da Gama.

Can Vasco da Gama stop Black Leopards?Vasco da Gama should regard themselves lucky if, by chance, they manage to go back to Cape Town with a draw from their National First Division League match against Black Leopards. The two teams will lock horns

at the Thohoyandou Stadium tomorrow afternoon.

Black Leopards are a force to be reckoned with this year. Their new head coach, Mr Zeca Marques, has assembled a fear-some squad and Da Gama should

keep a watch-ful eye on the L e o p a r d s ’ sharp shooters, Ruggert Nyun-du and Leonard

Ntshangase. On the other hand, it would be a suicidal mistake for Black Leopards if they un-derestimate the visitors from the mother city.

Vasco da Gama will pin their hopes on their fast forwards, Sbu-siso Mxoyana and Aleni Lebyane, for goals. The Capetonians lost 1-2 to Cape Town All Stars last weekend, while Leopards col-lected full points when they beat Wtbank Spurs 2-1 last Saturday.

T h e o t h e r NFD matches that will also be played to-morrow after-noon are: FC Cape Town vs Witbank Spurs, Lamon tv i l l e G o l d e n A r -rows vs Jomo Cosmos, Than-da Royal Zulu vs Santos and Baroka FC vs Milano United.

S u n d a y ' s matches are Af-rican Warriors vs Garankuwa United, Royal Eagles vs Cape Town All Stars and Highland-spark vs Maluti FET College.

Vincent Rammese of Young Brothers kicks the ball.

Vincent Rammese of Young Brothers in action after kicking the ball, while Thetshelesani Tshipani of Univen is behind him.

In their MMK Administrators’ League match at the Ramukhuba grounds on Sunday, Univen FC collected three league points when they beat Ramukhuba Young Brothers 3-2.

Univen enjoyed more ball possession in the first 20 minutes, and a scramble within Brothers’ danger area gave rise to Univen's opening goal. In the sixth minute, Univen’s slender striker, Walter Munwana, blasted in a rocket from inside the box.

Young Brothers lost their original fighting spirit soon after the goal. Univen capitalized and scored their second goal.

In the 18th minute, Univen received a free kick in the 25m area and Livhuwani Netshivhodza headed home the free kick by Bright Mayimele. Mavhungu Maphiri, the Young Brothers’ left winger, was reprimanded with a card for protesting against the referee’s decision in the 27th minute.

Poor communication among the Univen defend-ers gave rise to Brothers’ goal in the 39th minute. Livhuwani Masindi beat the keeper with a ground cutter. The Univen defenders started to press the panic button in the opening minutes of the last half. Young Brothers found the equalizer in the in the 56th minute when Vincent Rammese hooked in a loose ball, following a scramble within the box.

Univen introduced Edmond Ndlovu and Stanly Muruge for Sheriff Sakaza and Riphuluse Phas-wana respectively in the 70th minute. Walter Munwana of Univen was warned with a card for handling the ball intentionally. The goal which earned Univen three significant points came in the 84th minute. A substitute, Edmond Ndlovu, scored from the free kick with a volley.

Excitement as Spurs face Winners ParkThe much-awaited ABC Motsepe League match between Giyani Hotspurs and Bellevue Win-ners Park will be staged at the Giyani Stadium tomorrow.

Although they will be playing in front of their home crowd, it will not be easy for Hotspurs to overpower Winners Park, the current log leaders. They have already accumulated 33 points from their 13 matches and are two points ahead of the other title chasers, Magezi FC and Great North FC.

It is expected that Giyani Hotspurs will throw everything at their disposal at their opponents, as dropping points will push them down into the relegation zone. Winners Park’s dribbling wizard, Velile “Mlungu” Mdaka, will be available for selection tomorrow. He was given his marching orders in their game against Vasco da Gama two weeks ago. Joe Express will host Great North FC at the Makwarela Stadium. Joe Express are sharpened to kill after destroying Dynamos 5-1 last weekend.

Magezi FC and the struggling Dynamos with meet at the TT Cholo Stadium in Polokwane. The coach of Magezi, Mr Jacky Ledwaba, has assem-bled a formidable squad this season and the team have lost only two league matches to date.

An interesting Waterberg derby will take place between Modimolle Aces and Mosesetjane All Stars at the Ephraim Mohale Stadium. Bilika All Stars will travel to Modimolle, where they will honor their fixture against A1 Terrors at the Ephraim Mohale Stadium, while Lephalale Young Killers are gearing up for a tough match against The Dolphins at the Mogol Stadium in Lephalale.

In the final match of the weekend, Winners Park will fight for points against Mighty FC at the Mah-welereng Stadium outside Mokopane.

Black Leopards registered their fourth succes-sive victory by beating Witbank Spurs 2-1 in their National First Division League match at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Saturday.

As if they were going to bury Spurs alive, Leopards opened their accounts four minutes into the game.

Their dribbling wizard, Leonard Ntshangase, received a neat pass from Marks Munyai and beat the keeper with a ground cutter.

The visitors from the coal city lost cohesion in the middle of the park soon afterwards, but Lidoda Duvha failed to capitalize. Realizing that their scoring chances were slim, Black Leopards introduced their sharpshooter, Ruggert Nyundu, and sacrifi ced Ndamulelo Mungadi when the game was only 14 minutes old.

Vusi Mthimkhulu of Spurs was the fi rst play-er to go into the referee’s book. He obstructed Thivhavhudzi Ndou in the 24th minute. Spurs lost their defender, Victor Ngunyule, through injury four minutes into the second half. He was replaced with Gift Modika.

Leopards effected another change to their start-ing lineup by replacing their left back, Jabulani Ndebele, with Shimi Radebe. Rabebe formed a deadly combination with Dunga Munganga and Thivhavhudzi Ndou at the defence.

Leopards increased the margin in the 57th min-ute. Ruggert Nyundu beat the keeper with a ground cutter after forcing his way through the defence.

The keeper of Black Leopards, Avhashoni Tshinuna, was reprimanded with a card for wast-ing time six minutes later and Leopards started to play defensive football in an attempt to protect their lead. They were severely punished when the men from eMalahleni reduced one through Mogau Tshehla. He fi nished off a rebound after a scramble within the box. Ruggert Nyundu was also warned with a card for ignoring the referee’s whistle late in the game.
