A UNIQUE DESIGN

Allows installer a fast and easy align-ment, using only one levelled line atthe top of enclosure.

Once hanging strip is installed, thecabinet supports can be hooked to thehanging strip and fastened to wall atbottom.

This will ensure perfect alignment ofthe top and bottom of the enclosure.

RAY VECTOR ENCLOSURES

Enclosures are manufactured in awide variety of models designed underthe ROSEMEX tradition of aesthetics, durability, strength and ease of instal-lation.

Most models consist of element andcabinet supports hung from a continu-ous hanging strip. Enclosure lengthsare assembled together using con-cealed joiner strips to give a single unitlook in every room. The uniqueROSEMEX cabinet support designenables the installer to simply clip thebottom of the enclosure to the support.Enclosures are made of quality coldrolled steel, 18, 16 or 14 gauge, formed and reinforced with top sup-ports, degreased, phosphatized andcoated inside and out with a corrosionresistant tan primer. Panels are manu-factured in lengths of 2’0” to 8’0” by 6”increments. A wide variety of acces-sories are also available to suit yourrequirements.

ELEMENTSElements are either non-ferrous(seamless coppertube with aluminumfins) or ferrous (firm steel tube withsteel fin). For both types of elements, the tubes are expanded within the finsto obtain a permanent thermal bondbetween the two. These are manufac-tured in lengths of 1’0” to 10’0” by 6”increments. Both elements can beused on either steam or hot water sys-tems.

NON-FERROUS ELEMENTS,TYPES 34C & 44CThese elements are used for their highheat transfer properties and optimumoutput. They are manufactured witheither 3” x 4” or 4” x 4” fins formed withan integral collar for uniform spacing. All tube ends are manufactured toreceive standard sweat fittings.ROSEMEX elements are designed foruse at 250 P.S.I. or 300°F E.W.T. max-imum working conditions.

FERROUS ELEMENTS,TYPE 44SThese elements are used for theirsturdiness and are manufactured with4” x 4” steel fins. The fins are formedwith an integral collar for uniform spac-ing. All tube ends are factory threaded, ready to receive standard 1 1/4” I.P.S.fittings. ROSEMEX steel elements aredesigned for use at 250 P.S.I. or 300°FE.W.T. maximum working conditions.

ACCESSORIES

END PIECEEnd pieces are used to close offenclosure ends when cabinets do notterminate on an adjacent wall. Theend piece is manufactured with round-ed corners and protrudes 1” beyondenclosure to give a neat finishedappearance.

WALL TRIMJoiners are manufactured to overlapenclosures and cover the gap betweencabinet end and adjacent wall orcolumns. These are usually supplied in4”, 5”, 6” or 8” lengths.

CONCEALED JOINER (butt joint)Otherwise known as “butt joint connec-tor”, this piece fits between two enclo-sure lengths to give a clean hairlinejoint appearance to the installation.

INSIDE CORNERInside corners are manufactured tooverlap enclosures and are usedwhen piping runs on two or moreinside walls to meet heating require-ments. These are usually supplied at90° angles, however may be modifiedto meet project conditions.

OUTSIDE CORNEROutside corners are manufactured tooverlap enclosures and are usedwhen piping runs on two or more out-side walls to meet heating require-ments. These are usually supplied at90° angles, however may be modifiedto meet project conditions.

ACCESS DOORSAccess doors are manufactured to per-mit access to valves or other controlslocated inside enclosure. Two typesare available, factory installed 5” x 7”or field mounted 5” x 7” with frame. They are supplied as standard with ascrew lock, however a camlock type isalso available. For field mounted access doors, thecontractor is required to perforate theenclosure.

PIPE COVERSPipe covers are used to hide pipesthat run around a column. These aresupplied in 5”, 11” or 17” heights andare 3 3/4” deep.

DAMPERSDampers are knob operated hingedtype and are available for use on mostRay-Vector models. The screw typemechanism is corrosion proof andsets the damper in any position.

1 SYSTEM DESIGNING FLEXIBILITY(COPPER TUBE ONLY)

The different tube sizes shown in our catalogueenables a designer to select a size for differentapplications which allows him to balance his systemand reduce problems of balancing after installation.

Just as distribution piping is sized in accordancewith the load, so can a fin-tube run be sized inaccordance with the load, within the limits ofavailable tube size.

2Where low flow rates occur, the smaller tube sizescan be used effectively to avoid the low “critical”velocity range. The Institute of Boiler and Radiator Manufacturerssponsored a test program at the University ofIllinois to determine the effect of water velocity onheat output of various sizes in fin-tube elements.Fig. 1 is a plot of the results of this program show-ing rating factors versus velocity. The 1969 Equipment Volume of ASHRAE Guideand data Book points out on page 393 that the rat-ing factor drops rapidly between 0.4 and 0.25Ft/Sec. water velocity where flow changes fromturbulent to streamline flow, and VELOCITIES

BELOW THIS RANGE SHOULD BE AVOIDED ina hot water heating system, since the results can-not be accurately predictable.

From table 1 it is apparent that the rating factordrops even more rapidly with water velocity below0.25 Ft / Sec. thus seriously affecting the heat out-put of the fin-tube unit. Il is therefore recommend-ed that the designer check the velocity on low-load units and select the heating elemenl tubesize that will provide a velocity above the “critical”range. If the velocity should be too low, even thesmallest available tube size, the design water flowrate should be increased to that unit.

4Where perimeter fin-tube heating is used on sys-tems having very low water temperatures, the lowheat transfer rate may require a large size fin to

offset heat losses and at the same time mayrequire a small size tube because of the smalltotal load.

5Use of the small tube sizes result in lower cost forconnecting piping in a run, for valves, expansionjoints, fittings, etc., as well as lower heating ele-

ment cost; and when used to balance resistanceson the various run, distribution piping and pumpsizes are not affected.

TUBE DIAMETERS

3/4” 1” 1 1/4”

3Where optimum system design dictates a temper-ature drop higher than the “standard 20° T.D.”, theattendant lower flow rate may require a small tubesize to provide a desirable velocity.EXAMPLE: Using the relation

B.T.U.G.P.M. =

500 x T.D.

and assuming a fin-tube run with a connected load

of 20,000 B.T.U., the flow rate would be 2 G.P.M.based on a 20° T.D. The velocity through a 1 1/4”copper fin-tube would be 0.55 Ft / Sec. (from Fig. 1)which is above the “critical” velocity of 0.25 Ft / Sec.Should it be desired to use a 40° T.D., however, theflow rate would be 1 G.P.M. and the velocity wouldbe close to the “critical”. In this case a 1” or prefer-ably a 3/4” copper fin-tube heating element wouldprovide a “safe” velocity thus making a 40° T.D. fea-sible.

CORRECTION FACTORS FOR STEAM PRESSURE AND AIR TEMPERATURES OTHER THAN STANDARD

TABLE 3

WATER VELOCITY CORRECTION FACTORS

The curves in Fig. 1 can be used to check water velocity in heating element tub-ing. A minimum velocity of 0.25 Ft / Sec. is recommended to ensure turbulent flowof water.

Heating elements are catalogued with three different copper tube sizes (3/4”,1”, 1 1/4”) for a broader range of selection. Note that 3/4” tube elements can beused with flow rates as low as 0.4 G.P.M.

FIG. 1

NOTE: The factors in TABLE 1 may be usedonly when the water flow rate through thefinned tube unit is known and where the flowrate is less than 3 Ft / Sec.To determine the output at less than 3 Ft /Sec.,multiply the catalog water ratings by the fac-tor in this table.

CORRECTION FACTORS FOR AVERAGEWATER TEMPERATURES AND ENTERINGAIR TEMPERATURES OTHER THANSTANDARD

To correct for water or air temperatures otherthan standard, multiply the catalog BTU steamrating (215° Av. W.T., 65° E.A.T.) by the factorobtained from TABLE 2.

NOTE: The factors in TABLE 2 are not equal to,but approximate, factors for saturated steamtemperatures and entering air temperaturesshown in TABLE 3.

TABLE 2

EXPANSIONElements - The saddle supporting the heating elements allows amaximum travel of 1 5/8” for expansion and contraction.Enclosure - The extruded aluminum grille expands approximately0.1” per 8’ enclosure length when heat is applied under normal condi-

tions. End enclosures, where used, will expand with the enclosure. Onwall to wall application, the enclosure will expand within the overlap-ping end piece. On long runs of 50’ to 100’ or over, enclosure joints atcenter of run, or at specified intervals could be spread and coveredwith an end piece instead of taking up expansion only at end of run.
