The world is made up of amazing sights and senses that can drive our inspiration. Growing up in rural Suffolk surroundings, then moving to Leeds has helped push my inspiration forward. There are so many different types of art and architecture that I have a passionate interest for. In particular regenerating existing buildings, I believe it is very important to embrace and preserve the layers that history has left us. This now forms opportunities for us to create another chapter in the history of the building and area. I find it inspiring to think that this is my chance to influence and create work that will be seen for generations to come.

2009 – Present: Jeffrey Wright Ltd Architect – Architectural Assistant Part of the design team on various interior retail and private residential projects. Visiting and surveying sites and sole responsibility on the design work for a summerhouse.

2006 – 2010: Blackwell’s Civil Engineers Shadowing projects to gain an understanding. Site visits and surveying.

SkillsDrawing:An integral part of my work, with sketchbooks generating ideas. Technical drawing skills by hand and on AutoCAD.

Modelling:Model making skills from initial concepts to development and final presentation models

Writing:Comprehensive design report and creating briefs for design projects with research to then push designs forward.

Communication:Working as part of a team for the organisation of the Hepworth Gallery opening. This internship also incorporates consultations with arts organisations and gallery representatives.

Discussions with students and tutors as part of my course representative role. Verbal skills to present designs to colleges and clients.

I also have a very strong sporting interest, in particular I play cricket for Sudbury CC, captaining the 3rd team. I have an active role in junior cricket coaching, and have achieved a community sports leadership award. These sporting attributes also combine interpersonal and organisational skills. I have also been involved with student mentoring roles during my time at school and Sixth Form College.

A studio for the subterranean explorer - 01This first year final project challenged me to create a comprehensive design brief that formed a base for the urban explorers of Leeds. The grade II listed building located in Leeds at Bridge End created an opportunity to rejuvenate the area. The ground floor will be used to exhibit and display work by residential artists, inspired by the secret tunnels and history that lies underneath the streets of Leeds. The basement will be closed to the public and form a studio for the explorers to collate and discuss their discoveries combined with a residential working space for an artist.

The Shell - 04This second year project forced me to research and push the boundaries of paper. I created a structural form that unfolded to form a shelter. The research on this project gave me an understanding of structure and how it can be applied in many different ways. From the initial idea model making was essential to develop my proposal and finalise my design.

Treads and RisersSurveying the staircase of the Henry Moore Gallery in Leeds helped me to gain valuable experience and understanding of the structure and materials that have been used.

A waterwheel of Art - 07 08 09A live project that began my work with the Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield. A small grade II listed Watermill lies on the edge of the river Calder. I had to create a proposal for the regeneration of the building. Through research and design I formed a brief that would house the Pavilion Visual Arts organisation. With the original waterwheel restored I patched the building and inserted elements to create archive spaces, discussion and presentation areas and private working spaces. This design was then chosen to put forward to the Hepworth Team.

Through the lens of a camera - 02 03 04 06This second year final project dealt with creating a visual arts centre in a grade II listed Coach House building located within Roundhay Park, Leeds. The scheme invited people up from the park, playing on the visual intrigue of the visitor. The brief explored my use of materials with Corten Steel a feature of my design that saw large insertions pierce into the building. The project also focused on the staircase inside the building. My stair design is cantilevered from the large Corten insertions in the building. The open riser in my staircase allowing light and views through the stair. The materials I used were again challenged to help create a comfortable environment and move away from the industrial feeling that is suggested in the Corten Steel. Understanding the structure of the staircase is also important, combined with the level of detail that I applied to the design.
