J. William Birdsell

Bill Birdsell received his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Waterloo in 1984. He went on to found J. William Birdsell, Architect in Toronto in 1987. The practice has continued in Guelph since 1990.

He has designed a full range of small community based schools, churches, corporate, municipal, provincial, university and federal offices, and a fleet ambulance centre. His interior design work has been distinguished by his time, 1995 – 2000, as The Co-operators General Insurance, Corporate Architect, where his insights on how great places to work can impact the creation of a workplace as a competitive tool. Currently he has focused his work on the adaptive re-use of structures and through those efforts has created landmark buildings in Brampton and Guelph.

Throughout his career, Bill has served the profession as a mentor. He has participated on several Ontario Association of Architects and Canadian Architectural Licensing Authorities committees, many associated industry profession’s awards juries and OAA Council. Bill was the Chair of the Grand Valley Society of Architects, President of the OAA during terms in 2013 and 2014 and currently serves as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Pro-Demnity Insurance Company.

Bill has been fortunate to have the support of his wife Jan for the past 40 years as well as the joy of his daughter Erin Birdsell, B.A.(Honours) (University of Windsor), M.F.A. (Wayne State University, Detroit), son Mark Birdsell, B.A. (University of Western Ontario), J.D. (University of Detroit Mercy), Mark’s wife Diana Shligold, B.Sc., J.D. Julian J. Trasiewicz

Julian Trasiewicz graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Toronto in 1963. He has been a licensed member since June 20, 1966.

Julian established his architectural practice early in his career under the corporate name of Julian J Trasiewicz Inc. He has successfully practised during the past 50 years as a sole practitioner with a varying number of staff during that time.

In the early 1970s, shortly after being granted membership in the OAA, Julian was presented with an opportunity to submit design drawings to the Ontario Student Housing Corporation, a newly formed Federal Corporation. The firm at that time had sought to control construction costs by introducing a proposal call system from contractors. Julian was successful in his bid which was based on his architectural design and the contractor’s construction price. This vaulted his professional career.

Julian’s reputable work eventually produced a total of five high rise student residences at York University. This success generated by the completion of these buildings established new working relationships with several new contracting companies. Following the success of these projects, he completed numerous other projects providing a variety of building types throughout his career, ranging from commercial to residential, high rise buildings, as well as custom homes.

Julian’s dedication and work during the past 50 years has allowed for him to strive for and to achieve excellence while balancing strict budget constraints and client specifications and needs.

The firm of Julian J. Trasiewicz continues to practise as a sole practitioner.
