No.: TSB-05-13-004REV

DATE: March, 2005

MODEL:See belowSUBJECT:PCM REPROGRAMMING FOR COLD ENGINE MISFIRE / HOT SOAK RESTART / ROUGH IDLE

This bulletin supercedes TSB-05-13-004, to correct the affected vehicles. Revisions are indicated by >. This bulletin replaces TSB02-13-015REV and TSB-04-13-006, to provide updated reprogramming information.

PURPOSE

Incorrect PCM software parameters may cause one or more of the following conditions:

^ Hot soak restart and rough idle within 30 minutes of engine shutdown^ DTC P0300 - P0306 (cold engine misfire)^ Fuel pump noise or rough idle with no DTCs set (Eclipse and Eclipse Spyder only)

Reprogramming the PCM as described in this bulletin will eliminate these conditions.

For only Galant V6 vehicles produced before 11/1/00, replace the spark plugs after reprogramming the PCM, if they have not already been replaced under TSB-02-13-015REV. Check on the Warranty Superscreen to confirm whether they were already replaced. Refer to Step 14 in this bulletin. For 2000-2003 Eclipse and 2001-2003 Eclipse Spyder models with engine number lower than PS5961 only: If not already replaced under TSB-04-13-006 or TSB-03-13-002, replace the thermostat valve after reprogramming the PCM (see Step 13). Check on the Warranty Superscreen to verify the engine number, and to confirm whether it was already replaced.

For all affected vehicles, these repairs may reduce a possible fuel pump noise during start-up, but will not eliminate it. Do not replace the fuel pump if the noise is not eliminated after reprogramming.

AFFECTED VEHICLES> 1999-2003 Galant equipped with V6 engine> 2000-2005 Eclipse equipped with V6 engine (without variable induction)> 2001-2003 Eclipse Spyder equipped with V6 engine (without variable induction)

PARTS INFORMATION

Use the Genuine Mitsubishi Parts shown.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

For spark plug replacement, normal warranty procedures apply.

ProcedureCAUTION BATTERY VOLTAGE (AS MEASURED AT THE BATTERY POSTS WITHOUT ELECTRICAL LOAD) MUST BE 12.4V OR HIGHER IN ORDER TO REPROGRAM THE PCM.1. Check the underside of the hood to verify that there is no label to indicate that this TSB

reprogramming has already been done.2. Verify that the vehicle's PCM part number is listed in the table in Attachment A of this

bulletin.a. Verify whether the ROM ID is the same as the ROM ID listed in the table in

Attachment A. If the ROM ID is the same as or higher than the ROM ID in the table, the PCM has already been reprogrammed for this concern.

3. Use the MUT-III to erase all DTCs set in the PCM.4. Verify that your MUT-III has the most current version of the reprogramming database:

a. Select "Special Function", then select "ECU Reprogramming." b. Select "Database File Display". The database version is displayed in the top right

corner of the screen. Make sure the database version is N05021 or greater.c. If the database version is less than N05021, go to Step 5

Page 3: 05-13-004R Engine Controls - Rough Idle DTC's P0300-P0306

d. If the database version is N05021 or greater, go to Step 8. 5. Turn the ignition key to OFF and disconnect the MUT-III.6. Gather the following reprogramming equipment:

- MUT-III/STV Reflash Update CD 3/05 or later- Memory Card 128 MByte Compact Flash MB991853- Memory Card Adapter PCMCIA MB991939- "Engine Compartment/Control Module" Labels p/n MSSF-024G-00

7. Install Reflash Update CD 3/05 in the MUT-III LAPTOP. Follow the CD installation instructions.

8. Transfer the reprogramming data from the LAPTOP to the memory card.9. Remove the memory card from the LAPTOP and install it in the VCI. Connect the

VCI to the vehicle. YOU MUST DISCONNECT THE MUT-III LAPTOP.10. Reprogram the PCM, using automatic reprogramming. For reprogramming details,

refer to TSB-03-00-015.

It will take up to 20 minutes to complete the reprogramming.

NOTE: If the message "ECU at Current Level of VCI" appears, the PCM did not reprogram. Verify that the ROM ID is the same as the ROM ID listed in the table.^ If the ROM ID is the same as or higher than the ROM ID in the table, the PCM has

been reprogrammed for this concern.^ If it is not, verify that the correct database update is in the MUT-III and was

transferred to the memory card, and that the memory card is properly installed in the VCI.

CAUTION DO NOT DISTURB THE HARNESS CABLES OR CONNECTIONS. INTERRUPTION DURING THE PROGRAMMING PROCESS COULD CAUSE THE PCM TO LOSE DATA OR PREVENT FUTURE PCM REPROGRAMMING.

The table in Attachment A lists the PCM part numbers, ROM IDs, and corresponding vendor numbers that will display after reprogramming.

a. After reprogramming is completed, the new ENG ROM ID and new A/T ROM ID will display alternately with the message "Turn IG SW OFF" every four seconds.

Page 4: 05-13-004R Engine Controls - Rough Idle DTC's P0300-P0306

Note this information. Verify that the new PCM part number and ROM IDs are the same as those listed in Attachment A.

11. Using a ball-point pen, enter the appropriate PCM part number, vendor number, ROM ID #, this TSB number (TSB-05-13-004), your dealer code, and the current date on the Engine Compartment Label (part no. MSSF-024G-00).

12. Carefully remove all dirt and oil from a vacant area near the VECI label on the underside of the hood, and affix the Engine Compartment label.

13. For 2000-2003 Eclipse and 2001-2003 Eclipse Spyder models with engine number lower than PS5961 only:

Check on the Warranty Superscreen to verify the engine number, and confirm whether the thermostat valve was already replaced. If not already replaced under TSB-04-13-006 or TSB-03-13-002, replace the thermostat valve with the new parts listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin. Refer to Group 14 in the appropriate service manual.

14. For only Galant V6 vehicles produced before 11/1/00, replace the spark plugs if they have not already been replaced under TSB-02-13-015REV. Check on the Warranty Superscreen to confirm whether they were already replaced.CAUTION Do not install these new spark plugs unless the PCM has already been reprogrammed. Engine damage could result, as the new spark plugs have a higher heat range.a. Owners of Galant V6 vehicles produced before 11/1/00 should be given an update

for their owner's manual that lists the spark plug update. Attachment B contains the revised owner's manual information. Make copies as necessary to give to owners of these vehicles.
