Today’s Sponsor Salute Goes To: AOPA & Honda Power Equipment

Put away your tax-day blues and go “green” by joining the Lindbergh Foundation for the first-ever Lindbergh Foundation Day today at Sun ’n Fun.

The Lindbergh Foundation’s Aviation Green Investment Program was devel-oped for the aviation community to actively participate in aviation-related environmental issues and other impor-tant conservation and environmental projects, according to Lindbergh offi-cials.

As part of this initiative the Lindbergh Foundation has planned a full day of speakers and presentations on a variety of aviation-environmental issues.

The day kicks off at 9 a.m. at the Florida Air Museum Pavilion with Lindbergh Foundation President Larry Williams, followed at 9:15 a.m. with an announcement by Erik Lindbergh con-cerning his new initiative, the Lindbergh

Electric Aircraft Prize (LEAP).At 10 a.m., George Bye, of Bye

Energy, will discuss hybrid aircraft at the GreenSpace, which is across from the FAA Building, followed by a discussion of the new Swift Fuel by Jon Ziulkowski, also at the GreenSpace.

At 11a.m., Pete Bunch, president of the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA), will discuss “A Global Approach to Climate Change, How the Aviation Industry is Tackling the Problem,” at the Pavilion.

Then it’s back to the GreenSpace at noon for a forum on Lindbergh grant recipients and the application process, followed at 12:30 p.m. by an update on the new alternative fuel, G100UL, by developer George Braly.

At 1 p.m., a Lindbergh grant recipi-ent, Dr. Amy Lang, will discuss “Shark Skin, Butter fly Scales & Aerospace

Engineering,” in Forum Tent 1, followed by “Alternative Fuel Strategies,” with Robert Hackman, at 1:30 in Forum Tent 1.

“Last fall, the Lindbergh Foundation developed a new mission that would focus more specifically on aviation-envi-ronmental issues in our quest to become the aviation community’s resource for the exchange of information on this impor-tant subject,” said Foundation Chairman, President and CEO Larry Williams. “The addition of Lindbergh Foundation Day at Sun ’n Fun is a wonderful opportunity for us to spread the word and open the dialog with the aviation community about the Lindbergh Foundation’s support and involvement in aviation-environmental issues. We thank Sun ’n Fun for their support of our efforts.”

When choosing an aviation headset, consider this. Bose was the first to establish the use of active noise reducing headsets in aviation almost 20 years ago. And since then, we’ve continued to

be the headset pilots prefer year after year.

Today’s Bose Aviation Headset delivers a highly acclaimed combination of noise reduction, clearer audio and comfort that remains unmatched. And for nine years in a row, it’s been rated #1 in Professional Pilot’s annual survey, claiming this year’s top honors for comfortable fit, clarity and technical advancement. It’s this rare combination of benefits that other manufacturers find most difficult to duplicate and what continues to

distinguish the Aviation Headset from other ANR headsets.

Noise reduction. Clearer audio. Advanced technology effectively reduces aircraft engine noise, so you’ll hear more of what you want to hear. All with the clearer audio that has made Bose the most respected name in sound. The Aviation Consumer reports the performance “sets it apart from the pack.”

We take comfort seriously. Exemplary noise reduction and clearer audio mean little if a headset is uncomfortable. So the

lightweight Aviation Headset has been engineered to be the most comfortable headset you can wear without compromising on noise reduction or audio performance. Flyer Magazine says the Aviation Headset “is the closest thing to not wearing a headset at all.”

U.S. Air Force AWACS crews, who often fly 14-hour shifts, tested many different ANR headsets. They chose Bose. Made in the U.S.A., the Aviation Headset is fully certified to FAA TSO standards.

Convenient Bose payment plan. Use your own major credit card to make 12 easy payments, with no interest charges from Bose.*

Take our 30-day Test Flight. The best way to truly appreciate the Bose Aviation Headset is to experience it in your aircraft. That’s where it was engineered to be at its most effective. Fly with it just once, and you’ll understand right away why Bose is the industry leader, and why pilots rate us #1 time and time again.

Reminding us why flight is so importantBy MICHAEL PARFIT

Charles Lindbergh could see things in the distance.

Not just other airplanes, or a land-ing strip in France one May night in 1927. He was the best of risk-takers. He could visualize both trouble and achievement before their time, and he was determined to adapt the tools of the present to the needs he could see in the future.

In aviation and elsewhere, we need more of that kind of thing. So I’d like to give you some perspective on an organization that’s tr ying to help people find that vision and act on it. It’s the Charles A. and Anne Morrow Lindbergh Foundation. It is here at Sun ’n Fun this week.

I’m not a spokesman for the organi-zation. I’m a pilot who now serves on its board of directors.

I first met people from the founda-tion one day in the 1980s when I landed my Cardinal at Little Falls, Minnesota, where Charles Lindbergh spent some of his childhood. I crossed the Mississippi and visited his home, where he used to go to bed in the middle of winter in a freezing cold, screened porch near the river, just so he could watch the stars.

In Little Falls, I went to the annual meeting of what was then called the Lindbergh Fund. That day the organi-zation was giving grants – equal to the price of “The Spirit of St. Louis” — to young scientists. The grants were given for projects that were dedicated to a concept of balance between technol-ogy and nature that the Lindberghs believed is vital to the sur vival of humans and the planet.

Today this quiet but persistent organization is, in many ways, com-ing home. It is sharpening its focus on the stunning human achievement that will forever be linked to the Lindbergh

name: Human flight. In my view, the foundation is

focusing on aviation because aviation needs the qualities of both Lindberghs – Charles’s drive and innovation, and Anne Morrow’s wisdom and poetry — as we all face new challenges, both to aviation and to the Earth. Both are in

various forms of crisis. Aviation is in a kind of crisis of invisibility. It remains astonishing, but people aren’t aston-ished any more, so it gets more attacks — for energy use or perceived elitism — than awe. And crises also threaten Earth and our species — extinctions, dead zones in the seas, pollution of many kinds, warming, shortages of water, food, and energy.

To reach its full potential as the mar-velous tool that it is, aviation needs to lift not just our freight, but our hearts. Of course it must address its own role in the problems of energy and pollu-tion, but it can do much more.

Charles Lindbergh took new tech-nology that others had made, adapted it and used it to open doors of possibility. That’s what aviation can do again this century, and that’s what the Lindbergh Foundation is here to help us achieve.

When I think of that balance between our human ability to make tools and our planet’s need for care, I remember a favorite image of Charles when he was young.

It’s of the boy in Little Falls, Minnesota, who knew how to drive his father’s car better than the old man did, but who also bundled up in the winter so he could go out on that screened porch, wide awake and dreaming, beside the river and among the stars.

That was less than a hundred years ago. Human flight is still very young. The Charles A. and Anne Morrow Lindbergh Foundation is here to remind us why flight is still so impor-tant — and so wonderful — and how we must learn to adapt it and use it so future children, too, can watch the stars and dream.

It’s that time again! AOPA Day arrives tomorrow at Sun ’n Fun, complete with prize giveaways and informative conversations on the set of AOPA Live at the Big Yellow Tent.

Special benefits for AOPA mem-bers begin from the moment they arrive at the gate, with a discounted admission price. AOPA members who show their membership card at the gate will receive $5 off their single-day admission.

“We are excited to once again be the platinum sponsor for this year’s Sun ’n Fun,” said AOPA President Craig Fuller. “AOPA Day is one way we can share that excitement, and it’s a great opportunity for our members and staff to meet each other face-to-face.”

The day’s events actually kick off tonight, when Fuller will host a forum

to discuss current issues facing gen-eral aviation and ways that pilots can become more actively engaged in pro-moting the benefits and the pleasures of GA. The talk starts at 6:30 p.m. at the AOPA Pavilion, adjacent to the Florida Air Museum Pavilion.

Throughout the week, AOPA staff members are at AOPA’s Big Yellow Tent. Stop by to join or renew mem-bership, meet the staff in person, and ask questions.

The AOPA tent is also the home of the 2010 AOPA Fun To Fly Sweepstakes grand prize – a new Remos GX light sport aircraft. “The Remos was AOPA’s choice because of its modern design and safety equip-ment, including air bags and a ballistic parachute system that will be installed on N210FN,” said Jill Tallman, project manager for this year’s sweepstakes.

“Remos has demonstrated a commit-ment to reach beyond the traditional GA marketplace in order to expose others to the experience of flight.”

The Remos will be awarded dur-ing the AOPA Aviation Summit, Nov. 11-13, in Long Beach, Calif. Complete rules, eligibility requirements, and alternate means of entry are available online at AOPA.org/Sweepstakes.

Throughout the day, AOPA staff members will roam the Sun ’n Fun grounds, looking for people wearing special AOPA stickers, available at the AOPA tent, and presenting them with special prizes. There will also be prize drawings at the tent, includ-ing the grand prize, a Bose aviation headset.

“We hope you’ll be back tomorrow and help us make AOPA Day a huge success!” concluded Fuller.

Tomorrow is AOPA Day!

While progress continues on jetBy JANICE WOOD

While 2009 was a tough year for the aviation industry, things were a bit differ-ent for Piper Aircraft.

The company, flush with funds from its new owner, Imprimis, an investment company with of fices in Bangkok, Singapore, and Brunei Darussalam, increased production rates more than 50% last year and hired 240 people, including 60 engineers for its PiperJet.

“Our dealers are telling us they are seeing more and more activity,” said President Kevin Gould on Sun ’n Fun’s opening day. “That’s given us the confi-dence to increase our production rates.”

While busy developing the PiperJet and introducing its Light Sport Aircraft, the PiperSport, Piper also spent a lot of

time last year concentrating on its basic trainers, including the Archer. “It’s had a low profile the last couple of years, but it’s making a comeback,” Gould said, noting it is now available with the G500, as are the Warrior and Seminole.

International markets, particularly, are interested in the trainers, he said, noting that Piper will “probably build eight times as many trainers this year than last.”

Meanwhile the company has com-pleted its Preliminary Design Review of the PiperJet. Next step is to finish up design details, then build the conforming jet. “We’re still on track for first deliveries in the first half of 2013,” Gould said.

On the other end of the spectrum, Piper expects about 75 LSAs will be pro-duced in 2010. The LSA is built by Czech Aircraft Works and distributed by Piper.

In other news, Piper announced that Forward Vision Systems’ EVS-100 and EVS-600 Enhanced Vision Systems

(EVS) can now be installed on its Malibu, Matrix and Mirage models. In addition to offering this technology as an option on all new versions of those PA-46 models, Piper and Forward Vision are teaming up to offer STC-approved systems for Malibu, Matrix and Mirage aircraft in service worldwide.

Piper will also offer an optional sys-tem on new Piper Meridians, as well as an STC-approved system for Meridians already in service, once an EVS is certified to address the Meridian’s higher perfor-mance envelope (maximum approved altitude of 30,000 feet in particular).

“Forward Vision’s EVS virtually turns darkness into daylight, giving pilots a real-time, real-world view of what’s in front of the airplane, both on the ground and in the air,” Gould said.

EVS systems – commonly known as infrared or thermal imaging cameras – present a real-time picture outside the cockpit to offer pilots a view that pen-

etrates haze, fog, smoke and precipitation eight to 10 times farther than the unaided human eye. It requires no programming or interpretation and permits pilots to see animals or unlit obstacles during night-time taxi and takeoff.

In flight, pilots can use EVS to avoid clouds, fly between layers, and note detailed ground features out of the night landscape. EVS offers daytime safety advantages as well, allowing a clearer view to the pilot in reduced visibility such as smoke, haze or even thin fog. The Forward Vision EVS 100 provides pilots with an infrared 40° by 30° field of view, while the EVS 600 adds to that the ability to distinguish visible light fused to the infrared image and presenting both on the display.

You can see the EVS at Forward Vision’s exhibit in Hangar C, Space 49. Learn more about Piper at the com-pany’s exhibit in the Manufacturers Display area.

Piper ups production

First PiperSport deliveredPiper Aircraft President and CEO Kevin Gould

handed over the keys to the very first PiperSport Light Sport Aircraft to three veteran pilots on opening day of Sun’ n Fun.

The three co-owners — all from Miami — are Charlie Carlon, 62, a 20,000+ hour, former Delta Airlines Pilot who works for Airbus North America teaching pilots how to fly the Airbus via simulation; Brian Garhammer, 52, a 16,000+ hour, former ATA pilot, who also works for Airbus North America; and Dr. Mike Morduant, 62, a veterinarian and a pilot for 42 years.

The PiperSport, manufactured by Czech Sport Aircraft (CSA) and distributed through PiperSport Distribution, Inc., features a rate of climb of 1,200 feet per minute and is capable of reaching a maximum cruise speed of 138 miles per hour and an altitude of 10,000 feet.

There are three variants of the aircraft: The PiperSport, which sells for $119,900; the PiperSport LT (primarily a training model), which sells for $129,900; and the PiperSport LTD (professional model), which sells for $139,900. Each is equipped with a 100-hp Rotax 912 engine, which can run on auto fuel, and a BRS aircraft parachute recovery system.

Jeff Skiles says GA pilots can learn from the ‘Miracle on the Hudson’

What can GA pilots learn from the “Miracle on the Hudson”?

Be prepared, said Jeff Skiles, first officer on US Airways Flight 1549, which became famous after it safely landed in the Hudson River last January.

Skiles, 50, was at the controls with Captain Chesley Sullenberger when their Airbus A320 experienced multiple bird strikes and lost power to both engines shortly after takeoff from New York City’s LaGuardia Airport on Jan. 15, 2009. Unable to restart either engine, Sullenberger safely landed the airplane on the Hudson River. Of the 150 passengers and five crew members on board, only a few received minor injuries.

Being prepared means checking the weather and doing a thorough preflight, Skiles said Wednesday at Sun ’n Fun.

“But it also means setting limits for yourself,” said Skiles, who has been a pilot since he was 16. “Before you get into a situation, decide how far you are going to take it.”

This means what when dealing with a VFR to IMC situation, for example, you don’t have to make a go-no go decision because “the decision has already been made,” he said.

While the two pilots are considered the heroes of the Miracle on the Hudson, Skiles was quick to point out that “the real story isn’t Scully and I. A whole lot of people were responsible — everybody from the flight attendants to the passengers who were seasoned travel-ers and watched out for each other,” he said. “Hundreds of people were involved and all were equally responsible for the outcome.”

Skiles, who told his story to Sun ’n Fun crowds during Wednesday’s Evening Program, noted that the NTSB report on the incident is expected to be released May 4. He believes the outcome of that report is that US Airways will institute new low-altitude engine-out procedures. The existing procedures, which deal with an engine out at 30,000 feet, are three pages long. When US Airways Flight 1549’s engines were destroyed, the plane was at 1,000 feet.

It all happened so fast that immediate action was needed — there was no time to wade through all those pages.

“When we lost the engines, the controller was trying to get us to turn around,” he said. “I couldn’t see the airport — it was on Scully’s side of the plane — but we had the Hudson River and it looked good. It was pretty clear what we were going to do.”

He notes that landing at LaGuardia Airport would not have been “a cake walk. We would have had to be perfect,” he said. “If there was too much energy, we would have gone off the runway. We were actually in the one square mile of the U.S. where you would want to do this — there were all these ferry boats in the river

to rescue us.”Last summer, Skiles and Sullenberger took over

chairmanship of EAA’s Young Eagles program, a task they were both honored and humbled to accept, Skiles said, noting they are in the company of such aviation luminaries as Clif f Robertson, Chuck Yeager and Harrison Ford.

“This is important to us,” he said. “We have to attract youth to aviation. There are very few things that we can do in life that have such adventure. I never wanted to be anything but a pilot — I don’t think too many accountants can say that.”

If you missed Skiles’ talk last night, he will be at the “Museum Mingle” for members of the Florida Air Museum tonight at 7 p.m. He also will give a museum lecture tomorrow at 2 p.m.

Don’t let the wind catch you unprotected

Developed by avid pilots, the C100 Aircraft Anchoring System provides pro-tection from damaging winds. The system

uses the Claw, a patented lightweight, high-strength anchoring system.

The C100 Kit includes one carry bag that stores three Claw anchors, nine spikes, one hammer and 30 feet of rope.

Total weight is 8 lbs. Each of the three Claw anchors can withstand 1,200 lbs. of force, yet requires little effort to install or remove, according to company officials, who note its simple, low-profile design

helps reduce tripping hazards and will not puncture tires. The Claw does not damage the turf, officials add.

B&S Aircraft, a Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO), is giving a big thank you to the troops, turning its sales booth into a giant 10-foot by 10-foot thank you card for the military.

“These brave men and women of the military who have put their lives on the line for this country can’t be thanked enough,” says Dave Copeland, manger of program development for the company, which refurbishes and sells aircraft parts across the world. “It’s our 45th anniversary as an American company, so we thought this would be the perfect celebration — to have every-one in the show say thank you in very accessible way. We have plenty of felt-tip

pens, so we hope thousands will drop by our booth and send their message of appreciation to the military.”

The company hopes to collect more than 10,000 signatures on the card, which pays homage to DefendingFreedom.org, which raises funds by selling “Defending Freedom” wristbands. B&S will give out free “Defending Freedom” wristbands and make a donation to the cause for each name collected.

At the end of the show, the card will be sent to the men and women of MacDill Air Force Base in Florida.

The Florida Sport Aviation Antique and Classic Association is signing up new members this week at the Vintage Headquarters.

Membership is $20 a year for members. The group includes members of many types, according to Esther Decker, chairman of the Vintage Headquarters, including commercial pilots, military pilots, private pilots, student pilots, and those who are “just interested” in aviation.

The association holds fly-ins in Florida and South Georgia every month, she noted. “We extend a hearty welcome to any and all who would like to join us either as a member or as a guest at one of our events,” she said.

During Sun ’n Fun, association members

man the Vintage Headquarters, which is a place for pilots and aircraft owners to relax. “We’re here to offer hospitality,” Decker said, noting the headquarters is open as long as the flight line is open, which is usually 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. “People can come in here for lemonade or an iced tea,” she said.

Another good reason to stop in is that the headquarters has several photo albums from the late Ray Olcott, a Sun’ n Fun direc-tor who was chairman of vintage aircraft parking for many years. The albums contain photos not only from past Sun ‘n Funs, but also from past visits to Oshkosh.

The group also holds is annual Vintage Dinner Friday evening before the night airshow. The dinner is open to vintage members and their friends, she said.

When you think of environmen-tally friendly products and services, aviation may not be the first industry that comes to mind. But Sun ’n Fun officials are working to change all that with the return of an exhibit area known as “GreenSpace.”

The new area, dedicated to avia-tion-oriented products and services that are “friendly” to the environment, debuted during last year’s fly-in. The GreenSpace featured Randall Fishman’s ElectraFlyer-C airplane, an electric car, a hybrid car, the Lindbergh Foundation’s “Green Investment Program,” a children’s educational area, the City of Lakeland’s water and

soil conservation displays, a Florida Refuse recycling exhibit, and numer-ous other exhibitors focused on green products, services and lifestyles.

This year’s GreenSpace exhibit will feature much of the same, plus an enhanced presence by the Lindbergh Foundation, showcasing current initia-tives designed to integrate technology with the environment and, at the same time, educate the public about the growing number of green activities that are taking place in the world of aviation.

“Sun ’n Fun is proud to partner with the Lindbergh Foundation, whose mis-sion it is to further Charles and Anne

Morrow Lindbergh’s shared vision of a balance between technological advancement and environmental pres-ervation,” said Sun ’n Fun President John Burton. “We hope to capture this vision in our GreenSpace exhibit and share it with Sun ’n Fun participants and guests throughout the week of this year’s Fly-In & Expo.”

The Lindbergh Foundation is a non-profit organization, based in Anoka, Minnesota, that suppor ts individual innovations that foster the environment for a planet in balance. Its programs include the annual Lindbergh Award, presented to individuals for significant contribu-

tions toward balancing nature and scientific innovation in their work; the Lindbergh Grants program, which provides grants in amounts up to $10,580 (the cost of building “The Spirit of St. Louis” in 1927) for research or education projects that will make important contributions to the technology/environment balance; and a variety of educational events and publications centered on the balance theme.

The Lindbergh Awards will be presented during the fly-in.

The Greenspace is in the Southeast Exhibit Area, near the Main Tram Station.

PilotMall.com is the “Official Aviation Superstore of Sun ’n Fun.”

PilotMall.com has forged a partnership with Sun ’n Fun that includes operating a 4,000-square-foot aviation superstore in the former Gifts of Flight building on the Sun ’n Fun campus during the annual airshow. PilotMall.com also manages the Gifts of Flight Tents and powers Sun ’n Fun’s online store.

PilotMall.com, which has been around for more than 10 years and sells more than 4,000 products, will offer a wide assortment of pilot supplies, educational materials, gifts and toys during the fly-in, according to Neil Glazer, president. “We will have several thousand products available, from education materials — which our company is very big on — to headsets and portable GPS.”

This year, the store also offers an assortment of sundry items to help make your fly-in experience more comfortable, including hats, chairs, batteries and more.

The store will also be offering samples of men’s grooming products from its recently launched sister company, Mens Direct (MensDirect.com), Glazer said.

Of course, the PilotMall.com Aviation Superstore will also carry the full line of official Sun ’n Fun-branded merchandise, including T-shirts and more, as well as USAF Thunderbird-branded merchandise.

Meanwhile, Gifts of Flight locations will be at vari-ous spots around the campus, such as in front of the Sunset Grill, near the Announcers Stand, at the Florida Air Museum gift shop and elsewhere. Those shops will also carry official Sun ’n Fun merchandise.

Back at the PilotMall.com store, there will be a daily raffle at 5 p.m. for a wide assortment of items, including handheld GPS receivers, headsets, sunglasses and more, Glazer reported.

Popular author and speaker Rod Machado will do book signings at the store on Thursday and Friday at 11:30 a.m. each day.

Glazer noted the store also has a courtesy XM Weather Station so pilots can check the weather before heading home. There’s also a flight simulator set up so that customers can test fly the latest simulation software and hardware.

The store will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. during the fly-in.

The United States Air Force (USAF) Thunderbirds military jet team returns to Sun ’n Fun this year.

The world-recognized military jet team first appeared at Sun ’n Fun in 2008.

“We are del ighted that the Thunderbirds will return to the skies over Lakeland, knowing the memorable impact their appearance made on all our guests in 2008,” said President John Burton.

The Thunderbirds are expected to arrive on opening day, then command the skies with a practice demonstration slated for 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday and another on Friday from 2:40 p.m. to 3:30

p.m. The Thunderbirds’ first performance is slated for 4 p.m. Saturday, followed by a performance at 4 p.m. Sunday (all times are subject to change).

The Thunderbirds (officially named the U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron) per form precision aerial maneuvers. The Thunderbirds squad-ron is an Air Combat Command unit composed of eight pilots (including six demonstration pilots), four support offi-cers, three civilians and more than 130 enlisted personnel.

The air demonstration is a combina-tion of formation flying and solo routines. The four-aircraft “Diamond Formation” demonstrates the training and precision

of Air Force pilots, while the solo aircraft highlights the maximum capabilities of the F-16 “Fighting Falcon,” the fighter jet employed by the Thunderbird team. The Thunderbirds perform approximately 30

maneuvers during their performances, which last about an hour and 15 minutes.

Popular Parts Exchange moved next to Hangar Echo

Visitors to this year’s fly-in will notice some changes to the Sun ’n Fun campus, including a new exhibit hangar and the relocation of the popular Parts Exchange.

Hangar E (Echo) is located near the existing indoor exhibit hangars, just a short distance from the Gulf Coast Avionics/Garmin Hangar D (Delta) near the entrance to the campgrounds. The Parts Exchange, formerly located in Paradise City (the ultralight area), is now adjacent to the new hangar.

“Sun ’n Fun is pleased to offer additional exhibit

space that will help accommodate those businesses who were previously unable to participate due to space limitations,” said President John Burton.

Burton added that moving the popular Par ts Exchange operation next door to Hangar Echo “will stimulate a great deal of additional pedestrian traffic throughout the area.”

“Parts Exchange is a major destination for home-builders and certified aircraft owners alike,” Burton explained. “Thousands of items are consigned by their owners to sell in the Parts Exchange each year. From avionics, props and instruments old and new, to partially completed aircraft fuselages, wings and a host of other pieces, parts and components, chances are good that you will be able to find whatever it is you’re

looking for in Sun ’n Fun’s Parts Exchange.”Visitors will see that most of Hangar Echo’s exhibit

spaces have been spoken for, according to Sun ’n Fun officials, who pointed out that an exhibit area outside Hangar Echo has been claimed by the new American Air Campers Association. Starbucks also has set up a location at the hangar for those needing a coffee fix.

Hangar Echo is located in the fly-in’s former main-tenance facility. During the fly-in, Sun ’n Fun officials will unveil the new 17,500-square-foot maintenance facility. The new building, located in the heart of Sun ’n Fun’s expanding campus, includes a wood shop, fleet maintenance area, tool crib, sign shop, storage and offices for maintenance staff and the Volunteer Coordinator.

Jeff Skiles, first officer on US Airways Flight 1549 that safely landed in the Hudson River last January, will be a featured participant at a variety of events during this year’s fly-in.

Skiles, 50, was at the controls with Captain Chesley Sullenberger when their Airbus A320 experienced multiple bird strikes and lost power to both engines shortly after taking off from New York City’s LaGuardia Airport on Jan. 15, 2009. Unable to restart either engine, Sullenberger safely landed the airplane on the chilly waters of the Hudson River just west of midtown Manhattan. Of the 150 passengers and five crew members on board, only a few received minor injuries.

“Whether you are an aviation enthusiast or not, US Airways Flight 1549 struck a chord with people across the country and around the world with its inspiring story about passengers and crew suc-cessfully overcoming almost insurmountable odds,” said Sun ’n Fun President John Burton. “Many have seen the dramatic video footage and read about the crew’s efforts to safely land a disabled passenger jet in one of the world’s most congested airspaces. But few have had a chance to hear Jeff’s first-person

account of what happened, from uneventful takeoff to the remarkably safe and successful water land-ing.”

“Flight 1549 is a story about people,” Skiles said, “people overcoming adversity, people triumphant over hardship and, I’m warning you, my story might not be what you are expecting.”

Skiles will relay this story during a number of scheduled activities throughout the week, high-lighted by an Evening Program at the Florida Air Museum’s outdoor Pavilion on Wednesday, April 14, beginning at 8 p.m.; a “Museum Mingle” for members of the Florida Air Museum on Thursday, April 15, at 7 p.m.; a museum lecture on Friday, April 16, at 2 p.m.; and a host of other activities during the week.

Skiles started flying at the age of 16 and has logged more than 20,000 hours as a pilot. His early flying time was spent with his father over the Alcan Highway to Alaska. He went on to become a CFI, flew cargo aircraft and later worked for a commuter airline. He has spent the past 24 years as a first officer and captain for US Airways. He also owns a WACO biplane.

‘Miracle on the Hudson’ lands in Lakeland

FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt is slated to appear at several venues this week, including the always-interesting “Meet the FAA” session on Friday, April 16, at 1 p.m. in the FAA Production Studios in the FAA Building in the middle of the grounds.

“There are several issues we hope to

discuss with the administrator and his key staff members during the course of his stay,” said Sun ’n Fun President John Burton. “We also hope he will be able to spend some of his time along the flightline meeting with pilots and enjoying a healthy dose of Sun ’n Fun’s

southern-style hospitality.”Babbitt was sworn in as the FAA’s 16th

administrator June 1, 2009. He began his aviation career as a pilot, flying 25 years for Eastern Airlines. He also served as president and CEO for the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA).

You’ve just spent a wonderful day at Sun ’n Fun and are ready to fly home. But during your preflight inspection you notice the nose strut of your Cessna 182 is completely flat. All is not lost — one quick call to the Aircraft Emergency Repair Team can get you on your way.

This year the team is made of up 15 to 20 volunteers, according to Charlie

Bukoski who, with his wife Judy, heads the team.

“We don’t do big repairs, but we can help with little ones, like replac-ing fluids or charging a battery,” he said. “The busiest time for us is right after the airshow ends because that is when people realize that they’ve left the master switch on and the battery is dead.”

Each year, tools are donated by Snap-On and signed out as needed from the emergency repair kiosk, which is at the approach end of Runway 5. Most of the volunteers are A&P mechanics so they can tell you which tool you need to borrow to take care of the problem.

“We try to stay away from doing the repairs ourselves, but if the aircraft owner asks, sometimes we will assist,”

he said. “We normally assist 70 to 85 people during the event. The bulk of those issues are problems with dead batteries, brakes, and flat tires.”

Hours are from 8 a.m. to an hour or so after the airshow.

If a plane has serious issues, the volunteers can have it towed to one of the FBOs at the airport for more extensive repairs.

Emergency Repair Team ready to get you on your way

Got questions? The Tourism Information Center

has answers, as well as playing host to the Internet Cafe.

If you need help finding accommo-dations or want a recommendation on where to eat while you’re at Sun ’n Fun, you can find the answers at the center, which is just outside the Sunset Grill.

Operated by the Polk County Visitors and Convention Bureau — also known as the Central Florida Visitors and Convention Bureau — the informa-tion center will be staffed throughout the show with specialists who can answer anything from where’s the best place to shop to where campers can wash their clothes.

The center also will have Florida airport directories and aeronautical charts available (while supplies last), as well as Florida road maps and guides.

It also will be the site of the Internet cafe. There will be four computers available at no charge.

Looking for a way to stay on top of what is happening at Sun ’n Fun during the show? Tune in to Sun ’n Fun Radio on 1510 AM.

The radio station will have more than 30 volunteers covering every aspect of the fly-in, according to Radio Chairman Dave Shallbetter.

“We’ll have updates on news and happenings around the fly-in, great inter views with aviation notables, schedules of events, interviews with sponsors, vendors and guests, live coverage of the daily airshow, and remote broadcasts of the evening programs and select aviation safety seminars from the FAA Production Studios.”

Women in Aviation will return this year with its special segment, “Women Shine at Sun ’n Fun.”

Also returning this year are Jeb Burnside, Dave Higdon and

Jack Hodgson, the voices of The Uncontrolled Airspace Podcast. They will do two podcasts from the show, one on Tuesday evening and the other on Sunday morning.

Other podcasters are returning this year, Shallbetter said, including The Finer Points of Flying with Jason Miller on Wednesday, the station’s first virtual podcast, Airspeed Online with host Steve Force, appearing via the Internet, on Thursday, while the second annual ‘Gathering of Aviation Podcasters’ is slated for Friday and The Pilot’s Flight Podlog with Will Hawking and David Allen is Saturday.

The radio station is expanding its Internet presence as well, with updates on its Twitter account, SnFRadio.

“The best news is, thanks to a part-nership with LiveATC.net, we will be audio streaming Sun ’n Fun Radio,” Shallbetter said.

Tune in to Sun ’n Fun Radio Workshops slatedSun ’n Fun Workshops can help

you learn all the skills necessary to build your own plane or work on any other project.

If you’re a hands-on person or are considering building an aircraft, you’ll want to take part in these sessions as experienced instructors guide you through the techniques for each skill and answer your questions about spe-cific projects.

Many of the workshops have been approved by the FAA for credit towards the annual require-ments for IA renewal and the A&P Awards Program. To get credit for attending, pick up a time sheet at the information booth and have the workshop instructor sign it.

Operating times are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Some workshops operate continuously, while others have scheduled programs.

Check at the workshop information booth for times and workshop locations.

W o r k s h o p s i n c l u d e : Woodwork; Avionics/Electrical; Basic Sheet Metal; Cable Swaging; Composites; Computer Resources; Engines; Fabric Covering; Kit Aircraft Building; Metal Shaping; Propeller Carving; Sport Planes; and Welding, both electric and gas.

The free workshops are located in the Central Florida Aerospace Academy and in tents around the Buehler Restoration Center.

Youth ActivitiesThe Tom Davis Education Center

offers fun, educational opportunities for young aviation enthusiasts.

The Youth Activities tent located outside the Davis Center is filled with a variety of activities, where kids can make kites, parachutes, windsocks, and ribs, as well learn the art of paper airplane making and learn about weather from experts. Coloring booklets will be available for the younger children, while the

Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) will have a variety of animals on hand.

New this year are three programs from the FAA especially for middle school and high school students, “Smart Skies,” which is an air traffic control computer program; weight and balance training; and learning how to pre-flight aircraft. The FAA will have two airplanes at the center for its programs.

Also available will be Kid Air II, a flight simulator.

On the center’s back porch, a hot dog lunch will be served for $3 for those who pre-register.

Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. Volunteers prefer par-ents stay with young children, while older kids — middle school aged and up — can participate in the center’s activities on their own.

The Tom Davis Education Center is located near the Florida Air Museum, just past the Pavilion.

Sun ’n Fun’s chief judge shares the tricks of the trade

How do you judge airplanes in six very different categories for a variety of very different awards?

“Objectively,” says Leonard Kress, chief judge at Sun ’n Fun.

“It’s easy to be subjective, though,” he adds. “That’s why we follow EAA judging standards.”

Those standards are outlined in a “scoring decision tree” that leads to scores ranging from zero (major deficiency) to 10 (perfect, impossible to do better).

“Deficiency is defined as a safety item with potential for catastrophic flight fail-ure,” Kress explained, pointing out that very few owners with airplanes in such bad shape ask to be judged.

At the other end of the scale, a 10

is utterly flawless, a very difficult level to achieve — but far from impossible. Most owners who ask to be judged have airplanes that are well above average, generally scoring in the seven (strong show quality) to 10 range.

As the judges make their rounds, there is no discussion. “Points aren’t awarded by consensus,” Kress said, but by each judge — up to 50 of them — filling out individual score sheets. The scores are added up and compared only after judg-ing is completed.

Airplanes are judged in six categories: custom-built, vintage, warbirds, ultralight and light sport, rotorcraft and seaplanes.

The first question asked is whether the airplane being looked at is airworthy. If not, it earns a zero and there’s nothing more to be done. Assuming it is, however, the next question is whether it’s better than average. A no leads to choosing whether it is very crude, crude, functional or average. Each of those terms goes with a successively higher score, from

one to four. An airplane judged to be better than

average is considered on yet another set of questions. Is it equal to, or better than, factory new? If not, but of above average craftsmanship, it falls into the five, six or seven scoring level: slightly above aver-age, solidly above, or showing pride of workmanship.

If, however, a judge gives a yes answer to the “factory new” question, the next step is the really hard one, Kress said.

A choice must be made as to whether the airplane has very fine workmanship but apparent flaws, outstanding workman-ship with flaws that are difficult to detect, or is — and this is a 10 — “flawless in all respects.”

Sometimes owners will ask judges to critique their airplanes.

“That’s a real can of worms,” Kress stated. “After all, no mother ever had an ugly baby. People put their lives into these things” and no judge wants to face a restored airplane’s “mother” with a list

of flaws. Take a stroll among the airplanes this

week and do your own judging. When the results are printed in the April 18 edition of Sun ’n Fun Today, you can compare your conclusions with those of the judges.

Judging airplanes

If you have any interest in aircraft whose wings go ‘round and ‘round, find your way out to Choppertown — and it is ‘way out — at the east end of the Sun ’n Fun grounds.

If the rotorcraft experience is one you’ve never had, go out there anyway and see how personal the term “personal aircraft” can be. Watch things with rotary wings take off and land, some of them carrying

just the pilot, others with enough seats for one or more passengers.

Just for fun, test yourself on the hovering demon-strator. The thing looks simple, but if you can keep the ball in the middle of the circle — a test of your potential hovering ability — you’ll be doing better than most who try it. To the embarrassment of adults, children seem to do it best and almost instinctively.

All in all, there’s a lot to see and do at Choppertown. It’s well worth the trek or ride out there, especially this year as Choppertown celebrates its 20th anni-versary.

The red and yellow trams run out to Choppertown. You can pick up the trams at the Shuttle Depot near the main entrance or at stops near the vintage aircraft area and the seabird area.

The Splash-In returns to nearby Lake Agnes in Polk City, adjacent to Fantasy of Flight.

“Fly-In volunteers headed by Splash-In Chairman Bob Highley and members of the Sun ’n Fun staff have been working with Kermit Weeks and his team at Fantasy of Flight for the past several months to make this the safest and most positive experience possible,” said Sun ’n Fun President John Burton. “The Lake Agnes location also offers an opportunity for Splash-In partici-pants and their guests to enjoy Fantasy of Flight’s incredible facilities and activities.”

The Splash-In takes place Thursday, April 15, and is designed especially for

amphibians and seaplanes. The fly-by begins at 11 a.m., with competitions begin-ning after the fly-by.

Shuttles will run daily between the Sun ’n Fun campus and Lake Agnes. Cost is $3 each way.

It takes more than associations speaking up to teach opinion leaders and decision makers about GA. It takes individuals — pilots, mechanics, FBO operators, aviation enthusiasts — step-ping up and becoming actively engaged with their community leaders.

“As I see it, some of the top issues for the coming year must include protecting our nation’s airports, ensuring that air traffic modernization accounts for the needs of all system users, improving general aviation’s image, and building the pilot population,” said AOPA President and CEO Craig Fuller. “In order to make real progress on these issues, I am asking every one of AOPA’s more than 415,000 members — indeed, all of America’s

pilots — to get personally engaged in protecting and promoting general avia-tion.”

Throughout this year, AOPA will be asking its members to get engaged in support of general aviation.

There are literally hundreds of ways to do that. Being more engaged can be as simple as staying informed about the issues that af fect your flying and as involved as hosting a major public event. But in between are almost infinite opportunities.

Go flying and take a non-pilot friend or colleague with you. Write a letter to the editor responding to a general aviation story, whether it’s good or bad. Write to your elected officials. Ask them

where they stand on general aviation issues. Make a financial contribution to a general aviation cause such as GA Serves America, the AOPA Political Action Committee, or the AOPA Foundation. Join a local pilot group or start one if your airport doesn’t already have one.

AOPA is prepared to back up its members as they become more active and engaged, providing tools like a new engagement section of AOPA Online (AOPA.org/Engage), including tips and suggestions on how to get more deeply involved in the future of general avia-tion.

At the same time, AOPA will continue — and even increase — its advocacy for general aviation across a broad front, from addressing a diminishing pilot popu-lation to protecting America’s airports to supporting those who support general aviation in Congress.

AOPA will be also be engaged in a number of other issues, such as air traf fic control modernization (known as NextGen), continuing to improve general aviation air safety, and aviation security issues as they affect general aviation pilots and owners. And AOPA will continue to monitor the FAA funding and authorization. While neither authori-zation bill passed by the House and the Senate contain user fees, Fuller noted, “Bad ideas have a funny way of coming back around in Washington, so I have to believe that sooner or later, this idea will surface again. In the meantime, the worst thing we can do is sit back, congratulate ourselves, and imagine that all our wor-ries are behind us.

“Taking action and making a commit-ment to become more engaged is vital,” concluded Fuller. “Even with our success, I must tell you that we can no longer take for granted that the freedom to fly will be sustained unless we work to defend that freedom we cherish.”

Get engaged: A marriage of passion and commitment

Getting aroundThe Sun ’n Fun grounds are vast,

which means getting around can be tough for some visitors.

You may use your own scooter or wheelchair on the grounds, as long as it meets certain requirements. Scooters must be single seat, battery-powered, with two, three or four wheels, designed for use by a mobility-impaired person. Wheelchairs can be manual or battery-powered.

Those using scooters or wheelchairs do not need special credentials or passes to bring their devices onto the Sun ’n Fun grounds.

People using scooters and wheel-chairs are allowed to go wherever the general public is allowed, which includes the flightline. Sun ’n Fun officials pride themselves on the fact that the grounds are very accessible, but they also realize

they cover a vast area, which is why the Blue Route on the transportation trams will take a person using a wheelchair or scooter along with their family and friends.

If you didn’t bring your own or realize once you get here that you should have brought it, you can rent scooters and manual wheelchairs on a daily basis. The rental space is near the Admissions/Registration building in the Main Gate Plaza. Scooters are $60 for the day, while wheelchairs are $20.

The Handicap Hospitality ticket windows are located on the west side of the Admissions/Registration building at the Main Gate Plaza.

Besides selling admissions tickets, the Handicap Hospitality team will be happy to help with information and questions you have regarding all acces-sibility services available during the fly-in.

Just your typeLooking for others who own the

same aircraft as you? Head to the Type Club Tent, which is next to the Florida Sport Aviation Antique Classic Association building near the Vintage Aircraft Camping Area.

Inside the Type Club Tent you will find displays paying homage to various types of aircraft, ranging from Piper Cubs to Mooneys.

“We have 14 type clubs that will be represented this year,” says Sharon Trembly, chairman of the Type Club Tent. “The clubs have tables and their members volunteer a few hours at a

time to answer questions and the like. It is a good place for networking and meeting new people. People come from all over the country.”

The Type Club Tent is par t social get together, part information exchange. If you have a particular challenge with your aircraft, mention it to someone in the tent. Chances are they can point you in the right direction.

Each year Trembly — who is a member of the Cessna 170 Type Club — posts signs outside the tent indicating which type clubs are in attendance.

American Legend Aircraft Co. is offer-ing a $2,500 discount on its Texas Sport amateur-built aircraft kit. The discount is valid for orders placed through the close of Sun ’n Fun, or April 18.

The Texas Sport aircraft kit com-prises four major sections: fuselage, wings, tail, and firewall forward kits. Each kit includes all the components and hardware for complete assembly of that section, company officials said. Customers who purchase all four major sections will receive the $2,500 rebate off the regular price of $39,900. With the rebate applied, base price of the Texas Sport kit is $37,400.

As an amateur-built aircraft, the Texas Sport requires more than 51% of fabri-cation to be performed by the builder. The Texas Sport kit has been designed to enable the builder to assemble their aircraft using commonly available tools, company officials note. The fuselage section includes a fully welded frame. The wing section includes fully riveted

aluminum wing structures requiring only final assembly of components. No weld-ing and no jigs are required to complete the kit, officials note.

The Texas Sport builder has a choice of engines and optional equipment, including electrical components, instru-mentation, interior, and paint finishes. Additional items to be sourced include a covering kit, engine and propeller, instrumentation and avionics, and can be purchased through American Legend. Optional items on the Texas Sport include choice of lighting, wheels, floats, Emergency Locator Transmitter, and more. American Legend Aircraft Co. also offers a 14- or 21-day KwikBild program to assist builders with the completion of their aircraft in a factory setting.

The Texas Sport design is based on the Legend Cub, and incorporates many features of the J3, PA-11, and PA-18 Piper Cubs. Builders of the Texas Sport kit can certify their aircraft in one of two ways. First, builders can operate their Texas

Sport under Sport Pilot rules when certi-fied at a gross weight of 1,320 pounds. Or, the Texas Sport can be certified at 1,600 pounds and flown with a private

pilot license. The Legend Cub is on display in the

American Legend booth #MD-10 on the flight line.

While you want to show of f your pride and joy to the crowds at Sun ’n Fun, you also must take steps to protect your plane, especially when you aren’t around.

“Do not touch” placards are a must. These are provided for display aircraft when you register. These cardboard sleeves slip over the propeller.

Verify the security of your tie-downs. If you use single stakes, insert them into the ground at a diagonal. A stake inserted on a diagonal takes more force to lift out of the ground than one driven straight into the ground. You may want to invest in the “claw” type of tie-down. Instead of a single stake in the ground, there are three at different angles. As the name implies, it resembles a claw when used properly. According to pilots who use them, they are easier to install and remove, yet provide sturdier protec-tion than the one-stake varieties.

Make sure gust locks are installed correctly.

Do not leave anything near your airplane that can be thrown, such as a football or a Frisbee, a model glider or even extra tie-down stakes. Also don’t

leave any cleaning products that have a spray trigger around. One unsupervised kid is all it takes to do damage. Put these items out of sight.

Be careful of the position of your propeller. Experienced campers recom-mended that you turn the propeller so the blades are vertical. Someone walk-ing between rows at night is less likely to hit the blade.

In adverse weather, such as high winds, do not try to “save your airplane.” If the wind is blowing hard enough, the plane could flip over and land on you. The aircraft can be replaced. You can’t.

Super vise the refueling of your aircraft.

Take all the expensive por table items, such as yoke-mounted GPS and headsets, out of your cockpit. Either lock them up or hide them well. Although most people are honest, there are some folks who see large events as an oppor-tunity to steal.

Taxi a little bit slower than you would normally, especially if there are lots of people around. Some of them may be aviation novices and may walk with their backs to the aircraft or on taxiways instead of on footpaths, and could step into the line of a wing.

The best planned flight can hit a snag due to a mechanical issue. If that happens to you at Sun ‘n Fun, you can call on the Emergency Repair Team.

The team is made up of about 20 people from all walks of aviation life, with an emphasis on mechanics.

This year Ed Stork is the co-chair. Stork, an A&P who spent 21 years in the Air Force working with airplanes, can honestly say he grew up at the show.

“My father, Glen Stork, was one of the people who helped create Sun ‘n Fun,” Stork explains. “I used to come to the show with him when I was a kid to help out.”

The elder Stork passed away a few months ago, so he didn’t get to see the 36th anniversary of Sun ‘n Fun. “Or else he would have been here,” his son states confidently.

There are three basic maintenance problems that pop up at the show, accord-ing to Stark.

“We get busy after the airshow ends,” he said. “That’s when people are in a hurry to get out of here and they find out that

they’ve left the master switch on so now their battery is dead. Or they realize that they need air in their tires. Because of the crosswinds here and the number of aircraft, we also see a lot of brake problems.”

If you need the maintenance teams’ assistance, contact one of the aircraft marshalers — they are the people in the redshirts and hats holding the orange batons. “They will tell us where you are and what you need,” he says, adding, “Be patient — when you deal with such a large amount of aircraft, there are going to be wait times.”

The team also has a good supply of tools aircraft owners can borrow.

The emergency repair team is located in a trailer next to the main Warbird ramp. “We are right under the ILS antennae,” Stork said.

“We get up at six in the morning and often don’t get to sleep until after midnight and we don’t get paid, but it is a labor of love and you can hardly call it work,” Stork laughs, adding he is fiercely proud that he’s part of such a fine group of vol-unteers.

“I told my brother that if I can’t make the show, he has to be there,” he says. “I want Sun ‘n Fun to hit its 50th anniversary

and be able to say there was a Stork there every year!”

Emergency Repair Team to the rescue

HELP IS ON THE WAY: Ed Stork, the co-chairman of Emergency Aircraft Repair, shows off the truck that holds the batteries for aircraft starts. If you accidentally left your master switch on, you’ll be glad to see the truck.

One of the main reasons people attend air shows and fly-ins is to do some comparison shopping for aircraft.

The experience isn’t complete without a test flight, but you need to be prepared to get the most out of the event.

First, realize you will have limited time in the plane, sometimes no more than 20 minutes, if that.

Most of the manufacturers and dis-tributors that offer demonstration flights ask that you sign up for them in advance. These flights are usually done early in the morning before the fly-in opens or later in the evening after the air show and most of the departures have taken place. Be flexible. Sometimes the demo flights will be conducted at an airport away from the show grounds. It’s important to find out if that is the case so that you can arrange transportation.

Sometimes the flight will involve the salesperson, a pilot and a passenger or two. Be prepared for this. Sometimes the manufacturer will have a rule about not performing certain maneuvers, such as a full power-on stall, if the aircraft is fully loaded or there is a density altitude situation. Ask about this in advance so that there are no surprises.

Although it is impossible for you

to memorize all the V speeds of each aircraft you intend to fly, try to familiarize yourself with as much technical informa-tion as possible before you step into the cockpit. Before the flight — such as when the aircraft is on static display — try to get into the cockpit so you can get a look at the panel layout.

Don’t get caught up in the avionics or play “find the instrument” during the flight. Instead, focus on how the aircraft feels and responds to control inputs. Let the salesperson work the radios.

Make sure the demo flight is done so that it conforms to the intended mission of the aircraft. If you are evaluating an air-plane to be used for a flight school, check its slow flight and stall characteristics. If you are evaluating it for your go-visit-the-grandkids-in-another-state airplane, check its cruise capabilities.

AFTER THE FLIGHT Most salespeople won’t let you get

away without giving you marketing material about the aircraft’s specifica-tions. Hang on to this so that when you are away from the show and out of the

heat of the moment you can review the information and compare it with other aircraft. Also, get a business card so you can easily remember who you dealt with if you have a question later.

Make notes immediately after each flight on the marketing materials you were given. It’s a lot easier to do it right then than later when you are trying to remember which aircraft felt like what.

Ask about financing options. Some companies even have aircraft trade up programs.

If you can, seek out pilots who fly the same make and model you are looking at. You can leave notes for them on their airplanes at the show or, when you get home, go on the Internet and look for type club chat rooms. Most pilots will be flattered that you are asking their opinions and will be happy to share them with you.

Getting the most out of a demo flight

Pro Balancer Sport introduced

ACES Systems has introduced the ACES Model 1015 Pro Balancer Sport, which “combines the economy of an entry-level balancer with accuracy that exceeds the capabilities of some higher-end units,” according to company officials, who note it is “ideal” for the Light Sport and experimental category aircraft, yet versatile enough for many general avia-tion propeller-driven aircraft.

The ProBalancer Sport incorporates the ACES Systems’ fill-in-the blank or option selection screens that prompt you through the entire balancing pro-cess — no more chart plotting or weight calculations. It tells you where to place the weight and how much. Use many different configurations, because the balance weights can be split between existing holes.

Would you like to be a mentor, but you’re not exactly sure what to do? Stop by the Society of Aviation and Flight Educators (SAFE) tent in the East exhibit area, Space 6, and they can help you figure it out.

“We’re here to answer questions,” noted SAFE’s Doug Stewart, one of the founding members of the organi-zation, which celebrates its one-year anniversary at Sun ’n Fun.

At the tent, visitors are invited to take a short survey to offer their opinions and needs on mentoring in aviation.

The new aviation-mentoring program is a group effort. Working together with SAFE, Hampton University Department of Aviation has received a grant from the Wolf Aviation Fund to develop the proj-ect.

According to Hampton University Associate Professor Dr. Donna Wilt, “Access to a comprehensive mentor-ing program can improve the ability

of our corps of aviation educators to teach well, and through this, improve aviation safety. We are grateful for the support provided by the Wolf Aviation Fund to get this started.”

The first step in the process is

to reach out to aviation educators and determine what support they need and want regarding mentoring. Consequently, SAFE and Hampton University have generated a survey for all aviation educators to assess

the needs and desires of potential mentors and those they mentor.

Aviation educators from all disci-plines are invited to participate in the survey, either in person or online at SafePilots.org/Mentoring-Survey.

SAFE launches mentoring development program

READY TO ANSWER QUESTIONS: SAFE officials, Tom Benenson, president, Doug Stewart, chairman, Mark Adams, vice president, and Jeffery Roberts, CFI of the year 2010, are manning the SAFE tent this week.

First Sirius delivery to be made at Sun ’n Fun

The first delivery of a Sirius Special Light Sport Aircraft will occur this week during the fly-in.

Officials with SportairUSA, LC, the North American distributor for the Sirius and the Sting S3, noted the company is now offering introductory flights at the North Little Rock Municipal Airport (ORK) in Arkansas.

“This aircraft’s cabin is even more spacious than we anticipated,” said Bill Canino, president of SportairUSA, noting the LSA’s interior measures 45 inches wide at the shoulders, 44 inches at the hips, and “sports more head room and leg room than the typical LSA.”

The Sirius is the high-wing companion to the low-wing Sting. Both are certificated in the USA as Special-LSA and are manufactured by TL-Ultralight, s.r.o., in the Czech Republic. The Sirius, like the Sting, is a two-passenger, carbon fiber composite, fixed-wing airplane powered by the

100-hp Rotax 912ULS engine and equipped with the GRS whole-plane

ballistic parachute. The instrument panel accommodates either a traditional six-

pack arrangement of flight instruments or a variety of primary and multipurpose flight displays from Dynon, Garmin, Grand Rapids Technologies or TruTrak, along with a full complement of avionics.

See the Sirius and the Sting at the company’s exhibit in the Southeast Exhibit area, Space 12.
