Activities will include: learn-ing and writing songs, audio gear training, music theory and appreciation,recording techniques, music performance, and how to work together as a band.During the week there will be a performance held in our studio and broadcastlive and streamed on R&R radio. Alice LennaYou might say that bowling ‘rolls’ in her family and Alice Lennahas been bowling and working at New City Bowl since she wasa child in the late 1960’s. Her mother bowled in a league thereand Alice got hooked on the fun sport when she was a girl. Lennahas been the manager at New City Bowl for over twenty-four years

and her passion for making the bowling center an outlet for thecommunity to socialize in has helped keep the bowling center amainstay for family entertainment in the area. “We try to makeit feel like a family oriented bowling alley,” noted Ms. Lenna.

She worked at New City Bowl as a teenager coaching kids andleft to manager a bakery for seven years before being recruitedby new owners in the late ‘80s to return to New City Bowl andwork there. Her husband is a volunteer coach for the Clarkstownbowling team and Alice went to Syracuse this year to supportthe high school team in the State Finals. Generations of familymembers in Rockland County have grown up with memories ofbowling at New City Bowl and Lenna has made it her life’s pas-sion to make it a place where people of all ages can experiencenew memories, like birthday parties, or just enjoy a fun nightout with their friends.

Bansari Sharmaloves the beauty business and is passionateabout educating the customers who cometo her European Wax Center with beautytips. She loves making people feel betterabout their selves, from the outside in withhair, makeup and wax treatments and fromthe inside out by providing a comfortableand relaxing environment for them. Shehas always enjoyed the subtle art of waxingand has never been a fan of too much bodyhair. Sharma is proud to have been the firstperson to bring a European Wax Center toRockland County, having opened a fran-chise in New City in 2012.

She went to Rutgers University and stud-ied at a beauty school in Paris and be-lieved that the upscale European waxcenter environment would do well in theNY/NJ area. She researched ‘Euro Wax’thoroughly, got a business loan and em-barked on her small business dream byopening her own franchise in New City.

“In Rockland County, people tend to be very loyal,” she noted. She loves working withher tight-knit group of co-workers, who have helped create a friendly environment forcustomers. “Coming from my background of having done waxes myself, I can relateto my employees well,” Sharma noted. Bansari pointed out the importance of gettingemotional support from her parents and her fiancé in starting her small business. She iscurrently planning her wedding and you can be sure both Sharma and her bridesmaidswill look beautiful.

Stacey Lamboshas lived in Pearl River for over 30 years but her family has been in the restaurant business for even longer. Sheand her husband are co-owners of The Harbor restaurant in City Island, in the Bronx and after the success ofthis seafood restaurant with beautiful seaside views, Lambos and her husband decided to bring their flair forproviding great food and a comfortable atmosphere to Rockland by opening the Aqua Terra Grille in PearlRiver. She wanted to provide the county with “a neighborhood gem in the middle of Pearl River,” she noted.Lambos and her husband had held onto the property, even after selling the “Hudson Bay” restaurant in 1989,which had been a Rockland County staple for years.

Through the management of Stacy Lambos, and after giving the landmark building a facelift, the Aqua TerraGrille has become a go-to spot for great American modern cuisine in the area. “Rockland deserves a greatrestaurant,” she noted and is proud to be providing the community with an elegant restaurant while keep-ing the comfort of a neighborhood spot. Stacy Lambos has spent her life working in restaurants and has abusiness education degree from Rutgers. Both she and her husband got their starts working in Greek dinersand their passion for hospitality has been passed down to their son, who recently graduated from CulinaryInstitute of America.

Ellen ArkinStrawtown Jewelry has become an “institution” in Rockland Countybecause its owner, Ellen Arkin, has always had a flair for creatingunique jewelry pieces that can be seen worn by women and girls of allages in New City. Arkin’s journey in the field of fashion jewelry is aclassic success story, born out of taking chances and putting in thetime and effort to follow her passion.

After graduating from Ramapo High in the early ‘70s, Arkin did alot of travelling and learned to make jewelry while living in Vermont.She made a cross-country trip armed with a can filled with 2,000sterling rings and went town-to town selling her individually designedrings to locals. After returning to Rockland County following aninjury that took a year to recover, she started going door-to-door andbuilding up a customer base before opening up Strawtown Jewelry.

She credits the long-term success of Strawtown Jewelry by “master-ing the art of making jewelry first.” Arkin loves working with heryoung employees and took great pride when one of them learned fromher as an entrepreneur and went on to open her own real estate office.

LyndaPiscitelli loves fashion and helpingwomen style themselveswith the right clothes andhas turned that passionfor fashion into her firstIndigo Chic store in 2006,located in Cold Springs.Piscitelli wanted to bringa bit of European charmto the area. She grew upin Rockland and went toFIT to study fashion be-fore working as a shopperfor many years and livingin Europe with her hus-band and family. She was

able to expand to four stores with their New City store largely due to‘word of mouth’ spread through people complimenting her customerson their outfits.

Piscitelli has a sophisticated chic style and believes in combingthat chic style with comfort. “A lot of women raising kids and work-ing tend to put fashion on the backburner,” she noted and at IndigoChic she and her staff can point out to people how to style themselvesin a comfortable way, while still remaining trendy. “Sometimes all ittakes is adding the right belt and jewelry to a t-shirt” to create a cool,comfortable outfit for women of any age, she noted. Piscitelli be-lieves that an “older woman can still style herself without lookingold fashioned.” Lynda’s has added her daughter Jessye’s keen eye forfashion to the mix at Indigo Chic and their partnership offers a freshperspective to customers of all ages.

Angela SpinaYou can say that Angela Spina took to swim-

ming like a fish takes to water. Even thoughthat’s an obvious analogy, it’s still a perfect onesince she has been in or on the edges of a poolsince she was a child. She spent half of herchildhood in the Bronx, half in RocklandCounty, but mostly in the pool. She made a pri-vate swim club team when she was eight andswam for Suffern High Varsity when she was inseventh grade. At age 15, her swimming careerwas cut short due to an injury that never healedright due to the stress put on her leg from thebreast stroke. Instead of giving up the sport sheloved, she decided she wanted to teach others.

Angela opened up her own swim school, Sea Beast Aquatics last year and teachesthe proper techniques to swimmers of all levels, from beginners to seniors, to serioustriathletes. Her favorite thing about working with kids is seeing how happy they arewhen they come out of the pool. Spina proudly boasts that “you’ll never lose a loveof swimming and once you get the proper technique down, you’ll love it even more.”

Stacy Damesekis Rockland County’s resident Warhol whenit comes to the ”pop art” of crafting tastycookie treats and through her cute New Citystore Cookie Girl, she has turned everyonewho enters it into a fan. Damesek is a for-mer art teacher who turned her love of bak-ing cookies into a new career. She started byfollowing a recipe in a book for hand paintedcookies and became obsessed with bakingthese delicious treats that were also pleasingto the eye.

After getting calls and demands fromfriends and neighbors for her unique sugarcookies she began to think she might have aproduct that people would love, she openedthe Cookie Girl store two and a half yearsago. She loves “making crazy things out of

cookies” she noted and Damasek and her small staff can customize cookies in manycreative styles. Her “cake pops” which are a ball of cake on a stick decorated into flo-ral arrangements are a big favorite of her loyal customers.

Damesek has two kids at Woodglen Elementary and juggles motherhood andCookie Girl while trying to get involved in community fund raisers whenever shecan. She is grateful for being able to work so close to home and her kids’ school.Stacey loves being at Cookie Girl where her edible art gets appreciated momentar-ily before being devoured joyfully.

Emily Dominguezis a proud Rockland County native who serves as a Trusteein Haverstraw and has enjoyed a successful marketingcareer. She promotes large and small businesses in andaround Rockland County through her firm, Blu RiverMedia Group that she started in 2006. Growing up, Ms.Dominguez wanted to be an attorney or a judge but hercareer took a different path when she got a job in the mar-keting department of a company in the optical industrywhile in college. She went on to work for Krups coffeemaker and became a marketing manager and later a bridaldirector. She saw an opportunity for the bridal industry andpartnered up with bridal companies to promote applianceproducts. In her 8 years with Krups she travelled all overthe world and got to oversee trade shows and placedproducts on shows like Ellen. Dominguez has gone on tocreate bridal programs while working for Bed, Bath andBeyond before starting her own business.

What she loves about marketing and promotion is that“every day is different,” she said in referring to the needsof her various clients. She learned the importance of community from her mother who was a local rev-erend and is as passionate in serving the needs of Haverstraw as she is in serving the needs of her clients.

Christina Sirerawho is Fried’s partner at Melange MedSpa, is a registered nurse who began hercareer as an emergency room nurse inWestchester, in 1998. She has a creativeside to her and was headed to Tisch Schoolof performing Arts when she had to backout of her program to help care for her ail-ing mother who was suffering through ter-minal breast cancer. After turning tonursing, she eventually began to feel“stale” working as a nurse at a hospital and“had a hard time” coping with the loss ofpatients, she said. Sirera’s turning point inher professional career was when she em-braced the field of Aesthetics. After gettingcertified in different laser procedures, she felt “happier and more fulfilled.”

Sirera and her partner Fried lean on each other for support. Christina believes that their children have learned valuable life lessons from their persistence, work ethic and desire to succeed and grow their business. Herbest day in the Rockland County location was helping a client who hadlost 100 pounds but was depressed over the result which left her withsagging skin and eyes that looked older. After seeing herself in the mirrorafter a procedure of fillers and Botox, the woman smiled and was taken backwith emotion. That reaction captures what Sirera loves about the careershe has chosen.

Cindi Weissblatthas owned the Original Designs jewelry store with herhusband Steve for thirty years and runs her business “likea family,” she noted. She grew up in New City, where herstore is located and is proud to see its revitalization proj-ect underway. She often takes the time out to counselstudents from the local high school or an area college aboutowning a small business. Weissblatt is as ingrained intothe community as her jewelry store and she enjoys takingan active part in hosting community related fundraisers.Weissblatt welcomes her customers as friends and treats

the employees the same way. “I contribute our success tohard work, keeping up on all the trends and most impor-tantly offering great customer service, she said.” At herstore, there is a “gift for everyone and anyone,” she noted.Weissblatt relishes the opportunity to accessorize a brideor a girl getting ready for the prom with the right piece ofjewelry to add a “special touch” to her look, she said. Sheloves that she gets to help others create their own look andstand out from the crowd. Cindi Weissblatt drives to workwith a smile and if you’re doing that you know you’vetaken the right career path.

Roxanne Perroneowns and runs Perronucci’s Delicatessen in New Cityalong with her husband Frank, which is usuallypacked with people who enjoy eating Roxy’s classicItalian dishes almost as much as she loves cookingthem. She has always enjoyed cooking, ever sinceshe was a girl and can almost always be found atPerronucci’s, where she makes the people of hercommunity feel like they stepped on to ArthurAvenue in the Bronx or Little Italy in Manhattan,every time they enter her store.

She has a double master’s degree from ColumbiaUniversity in Special Education and Psychology.Before opening Perronucci’s, she dabbled in the foodindustry for thirteen years when she became the foodservice director for Gate Hill Day Camp. She thendecided to follow her “passion” and open her ownbusiness. “Catering is my favorite ‘leg’ of the foodbusiness,” she noted. She leans on Frank, a successfulbusiness owner in his own right, when she needs helpwith the business end of Perronucci’s but the food isall Roxy and she is never more relaxed than whencooking for her satisfied customers.

Jill Friedhas always had an avid interest in beauty,although before becoming a partner atMelange Med Spa, she started out herprofessional career as a teen working fora clothing company. She worked her wayup to Store Manager and found herselfrunning a 2.2 million dollar store. “I wastraveling a lot for the company, and doinga lot of visual merchandising, which Iloved,” she noted. After cutting back fromthe 60 hour a work week pace to have herdaughters, she decided to find a career thatshe truly loved. After signing up for schoolto be a skin care professional, she quicklyrealized she loved every aspect of the job.“From facials, to make-up, and learning the

different technologies, I was hooked,” Fried said.Fried started working at Melange Med Spa, four weeks after it opened and the

owner at the time, Christina Sirera, immediately recognized her business savvyand offered Fried a partnership opportunity to build Melange together. Theyare now the owner and operators of two locations, located in Blauvelt, NewYork and in Highland Mills, a few minutes from Woodbury Commons. Friedloves working with people and noted that “it makes me feel great to haveclients tell me that we made them look or feel great.” The two women, who areboth single mothers, have become close friends.

Giovanni Galvano

Senior - Boys SoccerPearl River High School

Local Soccer Star Kicks his way to Italy.

Giovanni Galvano has had a lifelong pas-sion for the sport of soccer that has fueledhis non-stop motor on the field as a centermid-fielder for Pearl River High. His innate drive to work on his game and raiseit to the next level will soon take himacross the ocean to a soccer academy inItaly. With a name like Giovanni Galvanoand a father who instilled a love of profes-sional Italian league soccer into him, it seems like fate that Galvano gets a chance to learn from the best in Italy.

Galvano grew up in Orangeburg and is finishing up his senioryear at Pearl River High, where he relished his responsibilities ingetting his teammates involved on offense and defense and being able to “create on the fly,” he noted. Giovanni isdescribed proudly by his coach, Damon O’Keefe, as being “the best skilled player that I haveever coached.” Coach O’Keefe considers Galavano to be an ideal role model as a student athlete and thinks of him as a “genuine great kid, clean cut and with a positive outlook.”

Galvano also has played for a travelling club team, the Ramapo Valley Tornados and in aSpanish men’s league, where he competed with and against men much older than him. Heconsiders his strongest qualities to be his technical ability, which enables him to “read andanticipate plays well,” he noted.

Playing in a youth academy in Northern Italy is an opportunity the devout catholic and son ofan Italian immigrant had a hard time passing up. He was torn between attending Mount SaintMary, which was a Division 1 school and going to Italy until he got an email notifying himthat the school lost their soccer program due to budget cuts. His path to Italy was now a faitaccompli and Galvano is looking forward to embarking on the next stage of his life.

Legislator Ed DayRockland County holds a special place in my heart. My wife and I are hybrid

immigrants to this community, she hailing from the Bronx and I from Brooklyn.Never to disparage my neighbors who are native to the County, Jean and I chose thisplace - we adopted it as our home some thirty years ago. Rockland was our choiceto put roots down and raise a family in. We liked it then, and have grown to love itsince. Our involvement in our neighborhood, PTA, youth sports, schools, and civicassociations has yielded great gifts - lifelong friends, memories of the many youngpeople who grew alongside our two sons, and many great joys - along with a fewinevitable sorrows.

Special moments abound, but one confluence stands out. My mind’s eye driftsmany years back to being camped out with my neighbors in New City and standingwith my sons Chris and Mike, watching them enjoy the annual Memorial Day parade.Parents out there will identify with those special moments; having your young oneclasping your pinky finger, bursting with excitement as the fire trucks, police officers,and soldiers march by. I then fast forward to the pride I felt at the 2011 MemorialDay ceremony where Chris, then five years old, now a U.S. Army Captain and veteranof two wars, stood in front of our community as the event’s keynote speaker.Watching him was the first of our next generation, our grandson C.J., while mean-while Mike was back at Fort Bragg, NC, in training to earn his Green Beret.

I reference this chain of events to drive home a point - this is my home, one thatI am fiercely protective and proud of. I live here and will likely die here, and these pastthirty years tell me that the best is yet to come. I look forward to seeing you in my trav-els around this county, so we can share memories of our lives here and what makesthis County special, and ideas for where we want it to go in the future.
