    Abstract

Theories o f personal control are extremely popu lar in con temp orary psychology. W hat are the relat ionships

am ong such ap paren t ly s imilar not ion s as locus o f control , sel f-efficacy, and explana tory s tyle? Although these

cognates have similar correlates, they are not necessarily interchangeable. Our conceptual analysis suggests

that they exist a t di fferent levels of abs tract ion an d general ity. T hey interact wi th o ne an other to influence

behavior. Th ey are no t simply al ternative ways of ta lking abo ut the same pheno men on. Person al con trol

    should be regarded as multidimensional.
