9-year-old allegedly abducted and killed

Serial killer? The disappearance and subsequent discovery of the body of a nine-year-old girl in the Golgotha area of Thohoyandou has raised fears in the community that a serial killer and rapist could be on the loose in the area.

Last Wednesday, young Alice Mashau (8) of Shayandima went to school, the Nazarene School of Natural Sciences at P West Thohoyandou. Little did her parents know that it would be her last day. After school, she vanished.

Her parents, Ms Thifhelimbilu Mashau, and her father, Mmbulaheni, searched the school premises without any success. They were later joined by

relatives and sympathisers, but their search proved fruitless.

A passerby found her lifeless body between two heaps of sand in Golgotha on Thursday.

The incident has not only brought anguish and sadness to the parents and family of the dead girl. They have many questions which remain unanswered.

The family is not happy with the treatment they received from the local Thohoyandou

police, whom they accuse of dragging their feet and doing nothing to help them trace

their daughter. Ms Mashau, who works in Thohoyandou not far from the school, said they changed to the school because of promises of after-school care at Nazarene. “She has been attending the school for six months now and all seemed good. On the fateful day, I only found her brother. He was crying and told me that his sister had gone to the toilet but never come back.”

She said she had arrived at the school after four and that the only people who had been present at the school had

been the cleaners, who had been doing their job but not taking care of the children. “We searched everywhere at the school, but my daughter was nowhere to be found.”

The girl’s father said when they heard about the body of a girl, they rushed to the scene “and what we found there was shocking. We recognized our lifeless daughter. She was still wearing her school uniform, but her socks and school bag were miss-ing. We saw burn marks on her body and toilet paper in her genitals,” he said.

Rev Malindi Mudau, who is in charge of the mission where the school is situated, said they took the issue of security at the school very seriously. “There are always people here looking after the children until all of them are taken by their parents. What happened is most unfortunate and was not expected,” he said.

The body of the little girl was found near the spot where a badly injured student nurse from Univen was recently found. The student is receiving treat-ment in Polokwane.

These are not the only incidents where people

were violently attacked in the Golgotha area. Members of the community are fearing that a serial killer might possibly be active in the area. Recent unsolved violent crimes in the area include:

Tshililo Ndou (9), who was found killed on 27 April 2014. “We’re winning battle against poverty” Water for Sinthumule “in three weeks”The executive mayor of Vhem-be District Municipality, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, promised that the residents of the Sinthu-mule and Kutama areas would get relief water available to them within three weeks.

He was speaking during a recent visit to the Madombidzha pump station. The pump station was vandalised and had machin-ery stolen in August last year. “In three weeks’ time, water should be available to the people from this water pump station,” said Matibe.

Matibe indicated that new boreholes had been drilled in some villages, and that some of the old boreholes would also be activated to supply short-term relief water to the residents.

The Madombidzha pump sta-tion will supply water to Magau, Madombidzha, Rathidili, Tsh-iozwi and Gogobole. Mr Hannes Snyman, from Dynamic Integrat-ed Geo-Environmental Services (Diges), said that they were almost done with the repair project.

The other parts of Sinthumule and the Ku-tama area will mainly get relief water from drilled, newly activated boreholes.

Initially, Chief Vele Kutama had informed the executive mayor that the water brought by the tankers was not enough and requested the district municipality to add more tankers.

Speaking at the site, the Department of Wa-ter Affairs’ local techni-cal officer, Mr Mavhun-gu Muthathi, updated the officials from the

Vhembe District and Makhado municipality on the repair devel-opment of the pump station. He said security measures would be beefed up and that they would in-stall satellite cameras, so that the station would also be monitored from a distance.

“Water is ready. We are only waiting for the contractor to install what we call electrical pannels, so that we can direct water to the villages,” Muthathi said, and even tested the water for the monitoring team.

Vhembe District Municipal-ity’s media liason officer, Mr Moses Shibambu, said that the district municipality was doing its best to deliver to the people at all times. He said that the Makhado (Louis Trichardt) and Sinthumule and Kutama areas were always affected by van-dalism and the stealing of water infrastructure such as cables and water pumps. “All these are always stolen by thieves and a lot

of money is spent on repairing the damage caused by thugs,” Shibambu said. “Vandalism of water infrastructure is our main problem at this stage.”

Shibambu then gave an ex-ample of a convicted thief, John Zikhale (19), who was arrested for stealing a water pump at the municipal station next to the cemetery in Makhado. “He was jailed for 18 months at Louis Trichardt District Court on 9 March,” he said. “This only shows that, with the help of the police and the justice system, we would win the war against van-dalism of water infrustracture.”

A resident at Madombidzha, Rudzani Rambau, said that he was glad about the news that the two municipalities had finally heard their cries for water. “We shall wait and see if they are re-liable; they said water would be available in three weeks’ time,” he said. “We have already started ticking off the days.”

Petrol bomb destroys pastor’s vehicleSeveral Limpopo mayors get the boot

A well-known Limpopo clergy-man, Pastor Alistair Masham-ba of the Apostolic Faith Mis-sion Church of Mulamula, suffered a huge loss when an unknown person allegedly petrol bombed his vehicle in the wee hours of the morning a fortnight ago.

The vehicle, a Toyota Verso, with its contents, was completely destroyed and the pastor does not know who had done it or why.

Towards the end of last year, his church at Mulamula was completely destroyed by a heavy

storm, which left damage esti-mated at R250 000 in its wake.

Mashamba says he heard a loud bang outside his house and when he looked out through the window, he saw that his vehicle had caught fire, which could not be extinguished.

He said that he phoned the police, who later came after the car had burn out. “We later found that the fence had been cut to give entrance to the culprit. I was using the car as my office, and in it there were expensive Bibles which I had bought overseas,

cheque books and other items,” he said.

He says he had bought some of the expensive Bibles in the United States, where he received a Bachelor of Theology degree and a Bachelor of Arts from the Hebron University in 2010.

Police spokesperson W/O Al-son Mapindani confirmed earlier this week that they had opened a malicious-damage-to-property docket and that no one has been arrested yet.

Investigations are continuing, said Mapindani.

Although Musina’s 2014/15 budget is less than it was the previous financial year, it will go a long way in improving the lives of the citizens of this bor-der town. This is according to local mayor, Cllr Carol Phiri.

According to Phiri, the mu-nicipality is on the right path of winning the battle against pover-ty, unemployment, illiteracy and underdevelopment. “We have no doubt that we will be able to

bring a better life to our people, because we are encouraged by the vision of an inclusive society and a nation united in diversity. During the previous financial years, excellent work has been done in areas such as the provi-sion of water, sanitation, refuse removal, housing and electrici-ty,” she added.

Phiri tabled a budget of just more than R200 million during an event at the Musina show

grounds last Thursday evening. “A total of R207 171 000 oper-ational and capital budget for this financial year will help to speed up service delivery to our communities. Education is the key to creating a better society that is dynamic and productive because it can unlock the po-tential that lies within us this financial year,” Phiri said.

According to the budget, R800 000 was set aside

to help the more needy students who are ready to change their lives for better through ed-ucation.

Phiri further said that the local munici-pality will address the challenges of creating jobs for local people, reduce poverty, build infrastructure and stimulate economic growth.

The budget that was tabled was in line with the Integrated Devel-opment Plan (IDP), Phiri said.

“The IDP remains the cornerstone of ev-ery development and people friendly bud-get, a critical tool for effective governance and proper planning. We cannot stand by side-lines, while our people are without de-cent jobs. We have created 550 jobs to our poor communi-ties through the Ex-panded Public Works Programme (EPWP),” Phiri said.Mayor Carol Phiri tabling the 2014/2015.

In what is believed to be a ma-jor purge by the ANC against people who supported Mr Kgalema Mothlante at the Mangaung conference, as well as those believed to be associ-ated with EFF president Julius Malema, several Limpopo mayors were given the boot the past week.

Musina municipal mayor Car-ol Phiri was fired on Monday and replaced by Mohloti Ramoyada. Her counterpart in Mutale, Ms Josephine Mukwevho, was re-placed by Ms Sarah Rammbuda.

ANC spokesperson Khum-buzo Ntshaveni said the party has also received and accepted the resignation with immediate effect of Cllr Freddy Greaver, the executive mayor for the Polokwane local municipality. He was replaced with Thembi Nkadimeng.

In a statement on Tuesday, the ANC said that in accordance with the decision of the provincial executive committee (PEC) to restructure the political manage-ment team (PMT) of certain mu-nicipalities, the restructuring of

the PMTs of Bela-Bela, Mutale, and Musina local municipalities resulted in the need to change the mayors of these municipalities.

“The respective affected mu-nicipal councils will undertake the necessary processes to elect the newly announced mayors and executive mayors to their positions. The process to des-ignate speakers and chief whips in affected municipalities will be undertaken by the respective regional executive councils in ac-cordance with ANC deployment policy,” she said.

The mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, held a community outreach imbizo to interact with the communities within the Kutama area. It took place at the True Worship Christian Centre at Mi-doroni village a fortnight ago.

Representatives from different stake-holders within the community were invited to give presentations.

The head of health matters in the Ku-tama Traditional Authority, Mr Gilbert Muofhe, said that there were two clinics in the area, Kutama Clinic and Midoroni. Midoroni Clinic was completed last year but it has not opened yet and this was affecting residents adversely.

He requested the executive mayor to take the matter up with the health manager in the Vhembe offices of the Department of Health.

“The clinic at Kutama only operates during the day. In the night, the ambulance takes ages to get to a patient's place,” he said. “A young girl died in my village when the emergency vehicle took a long time to come. If the local clinic had been operating 24 hours per day, this would not have happened.”

Kutama Home-based Care's Ms Cecilia Rasimphi said that it was difficult for the group to perform their duties properly as a result of a lack of materials such as de-tergent, disposable gloves and disposable nappies.

“Some of our clients need disposable nappies, which are not available at our offices,” she said.

Sanco's Mr Azwindini Tshikota said that the rate of night crimes was high in the area and requested the local municipality to put up apollo lights in the area. He also said that the community was not happy about the contractors who came and did shoddy work in the area. “Once we have noticed that a certain contractor is playing, we will rise up as a community and chase him off,” Tshikota said.

Makhado Municipality's may-or, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, agreed that Sanco's request for the installation of apollo lights was very welcome and reason-able. “However, at this stage, we would like to prioritise giving electricity to home owners who have no electricity at all, before we can plan to install apollo lights,” he answered.

Cllr Matibe noted all the issues raised by the different stake-holders during the imbizo. He promised to revisit his notes and find ways to see how those issues could be addressed.

“I also advise the home-based care to file an application for funding with The Motsepe Foun-dation, who will be visiting Vhembe on Friday (27 June),”

Matibe said. “You don't have to wait for the Department of Health to make provision for you. This doesn't mean that we've not taken note of your challenge.” Matibe then lashed out at contractors who secured tenders and went on to buy posh cars instead of purchasing equipment to complete the work. “We agree with the community when you say you will chase the contractor who does shoddy work. We give these people tenders, so they can em-power local people by giving them jobs.”

Makhado budget

R228 million salary bill for Makhado MunicipalityEmployees of the Makhado Municipal-ity will receive a salary increment of 6.79% this year, if the guidelines set by the annual budget are followed. This will push the municipality's salary bill up to just over R228 million, but it also includes several new posts to be filled.

The municipal mayor, Cllr David Mu-tavhatsindi, announced the salary incre-ment during the state-of-the-municipality address last Friday evening. The event was held at the Dzanani community hall in Nzhelele. “The (new) positions will be filled through the process of service delivery priorities and the approved mu-nicipal organogram,” he said.

Mayor Mutavhatsindi said this year’s budget was inspired by the national de-velopment plan (NDP), a plan that will continue to dictate the municipality's strategic direction in years to come.

As far as the operating budget is concerned, the municipality expects to collect just over R770 million in rates and taxes. The expected expenditure to deliv-er such basic services is just over R746 million, which will bring about an ex-pected surplus of about R24 million. The

surplus is also the result of an increase in tariffs. As far as electricity tariffs are concerned, the municipality follows the Nersa guideline and proposed a 7.39% escalation. Property rates rise with 5.3%, while other services and sundry tariffs will increase by 6.2%.

The mayor was proud to announce that the municipality managed to spend the full Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) received the previous year. The municipality was granted a further R45 million to the normal allocation for the financial year 2013/2014, based on its performance. “The R45 million has al-ready been committed to speed up service delivery to our communities. This means more capital projects for 2014/2015,” said Cllr Mutavhatsindi.

In the new financial year, the munici-pality will receive R107.08 million from the MIG, R1.6 million from the Local Government Financial Management Grant (LGFMG), R934 000 from the Municipal System Improvement Grant (MSIG), R7 million from Integrated Na-tional Electrification Programme Grant (INEPG) and an equitable shares grant

totalling R287.64 million. The mayor acknowledged that the

municipality had failed in its efforts to maintain streets properly over the past year. He said that the municipality had resolved to find new and innovative ways to address this problem. “Progress reports will be given at various public participa-tion platforms,” he added.

The mayor also applauded the Sout-pansberg Rate Payers Association for their decision to resolve differences and to start paying the municipality directly for services rendered. "They can also attest that there is a major improvement in service delivery," he said.

The outstanding debt in the R293 towns is still a cause of major concern for the municipality. Several initiatives over the past few years by the municipality to get these residents to pay for services did not yield the expected results. The municipality is also losing revenue in certain areas because of illegal electricity connections. "It is common knowledge that residents must pay for the services rendered accompanied by unquestion-able bills. The performance indicator

in this regard will be correct billing and an increased revenue col-lection in the towns," he said. The mayor emphasised that the culprits of illegal con-nections would be severely punished if the problem persisted. "Culprits will be dealt with as a way of send-ing a clear message even to prospective fraudsters," he said.

During his address, Cllr Mutavhatsindi insisted that empow-ering local business-es was a priority in Makhado Municipal-ity. “The struggle for economic freedom should preoccupy our strategic agenda,” he said.

A dedicated emergency rescue shift manager, Mr Elvis Mathaulula (36) of Siloam, was laid to rest at the weekend.

Hundreds of community members, friends, relatives and colleagues in their work uniforms came to bid farewell to the man who was loved by all. He worked at the Thohoyan-dou Emergency Medical Services in Thohoyandou Block G and died in a horrific motor accident at the Mule-dane traffic lights a fortnight ago.

His funeral follows a memorial service held in his honour at his work place on Thursday last week. A guard of honour was held by his uniformed colleagues at the cemetery. Close relatives, including his wife, Mrs Tshinakaho Mathaulula, cried uncontrollably when the casket was lowered.

Speakers were drawn from labour, civic structures, representatives from the district and provincial medical

services and the football fraternity. Chief Samuel Netshiavha urged the youth to emulate the good example set by Mathaulula, whom he described as an all-rounder, who participated in almost everything, be it soccer or community and family matters.

Elvis Avhapfani Mathaulula was born at Mukula in 1978. His edu-cational journey started at Takalani Primary School and continued at Mushayathoni Secondary School and Mphephu Secondary.

In 2001, he obtained a certificate as basic ambulance assistant and later received numerous related senior qualifications.

He started working at the emergen-cy medical services as an ambulance assistant in 2002 and was promoted to the position of shift manager in 2009.

He is survived by his wife, two children (daughter Murangi and son Ngaene), his mother Agnes Mathaulu-la, three brothers and a sister.

Vhembe District Municipality has declared war against littering.

This was announced by the district executive mayor, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, during the official handing over of 180 steel drums that will be used as waste storage in four local municipalities.

During an event held at Tshisaulu Sports Grounds on Tuesday, the Mutale Local Municipality received 60 drums, while Musina, Makhado and Thulamela were given 40 each. According to Matibe, the district bought the dustbins to support the local municipalities to ensure that services are rendered efficiently and effectively.

He said a decision had already been taken to support local municipalities in areas such as electricity and the purchasing of graders. "This is in line with the Greenest Municipality Com-petition Awards, previously known as the Cleanest Town Competition, which is a national government inter-vention to assist in addressing some of the waste management problems in the municipalities.

"The key elements are reducing, recycling and reusing waste mate-rials. Although the Cleanest Town Competition was fairly successful

in achieving its primary objectives, there are some municipalities that are struggling to meet the requirements as a result of budget constraints," said Matibe. Matibe said the municipality would develop bulk waste manage-ment infrastructure and regulate, coordinate, monitor and ensure the sound management of comprehensive waste management in the district as it is expected by the legislation. He added that some of the local munici-palities were still struggling to com-ply with the minimum requirements for waste management and lacked resources to achieve the elements of waste management.

The drums are painted green and marked Keep VDM Clean. Mutale was given more drums because it has few resources for waste management.

Matibe urged the community to make sure that their areas were clean and conducive for everyone. He said individuals were liable for the clean-ing and maintenance of their yards and surroundings.

"Let's us teach each other that litter-ing is dangerous to our communities. Such education and awareness must be cascaded to our young people at schools and other forums," said Matibe.

During the months of April, May and June, several lucky draws were held at Khoroni Hotel and Casino to establish the finalists for the grand prizes of a Toyota Etios 1.5 and R200 000 in cash in the Ta Ta Ma Vroom Vroom promotion. Fifty-eight finalists were chosen over this period and the final draw took place last Saturday evening. Mr Calvin Mutheiwana won the Etios 1.5. Photographed during the event were, from left to right, GRO Ndivhudza Malada, Mr Mutheiwana and GRO Linah Mokwebo.

“We need more changes to improve the lives of persons living with disabilities. There is a lack of accessibility in most of government buildings, especially to those who use wheel chairs and crutches. Documents are not yet available in Braille and it is still very difficult for disabled to be employed,” said the newly elected chairperson of the Vhembe Disabled Forum, Mr Lufuno Tshifhango. He was one of the speakers of a conference at the Khoroni Hotel last week. In her address, Cllr Constance Mphaphuli said the Vhembe District Municipality was ready to support the disabled. For the whole of last week the Transnet Phelophepa health care train was in Makhado (Louis Trichardt), providing basic health services to the public. Members of the public received health care, cancer and diabetes education, dental screening and education and counselling, free of charge. Patients only paid R30 to purchase glasses, R5 for eye drops and R15 for children’s dental procedures. Mr Eric Tau, the health care train’s marketing director, said the aim was to help people and encourage them to look after their health. A member of the local organising committee (LOC), Mr Samson Mashimbye, said Transnet was doing a great job by helping the communities to understand the importance of their health. Photographed at the Makhado train station are members of the LOC and Mr Eric Tau (third from right) from Transnet.

Former SATMA winner Jinika.

The winner of the best Tshivenda album at the Satma awards in 2013, Junior Sikhele.

Tshivenda traditional music guru

and a former SATMA winner,

Solomon Mathashe.

Sikhele.

It is time again for the SATMA awards The lines for nominations for the ninth annu-al South African Traditional Music (Satma) awards were declared at a gala dinner launch at the Elangeni Hotel in Durban last Friday.

The public were invited to nominate their fa-vourite traditional artist or group by SMS-ing their favourite artist or group and category to 34066. An SMS costs R1,50 and free SMSes do not apply.

The launch was attended by high-profi le guests, including members of the executive council from both Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Eastern Cape. MEC Pemmy Majodini of the Department of Sports Recreation Arts and Culture in the Eastern Cape gave the assurance that her province was ready to host this year’s SATMA event.

The founder of SATMA, Dr Dumisani Goba, promised that the awards would continue to “honour and preserve our culture and heritage through its support of the arts.” He mentioned that the country’s local heritage still did not receive the fi nancial support that it required or deserved. “Musicians should be living the same profi le and fi nancial lives as their sporting counterparts, such

as soccer stars,” Goba added. He further challenged the government and as-

sociated arts and culture departments to put their fi nancial muscles behind programmes that support the upliftment of traditional music “in its support of our culture and heritage.”

A change to the format of the voting process was unveiled by SATMA CEO Ms Nonyamezelo Sotomela. All voting must be made from a SAT-MA sim card, which is a bold new initiative by SATMA to become less reliant on grants and to build towards becoming a self-sustainable opera-tion. Queries related to starterpacks can be sent to Siya Macanda at [email protected] and he can be contacted on 071 161 2868. Details of all registration requirements are available on the SATMA Website: www.satmaawards.co.za. There are three new categories for 2014: best vernacular local movie, most downloaded song and radio station of the year.

People were especially interested in the new platform that was presented, whereby all nominees will have their nominated song loaded onto a

“mysatma website” for downloading by their fans. A percentage of the proceeds of those downloads will be given to the respective artists.

The presentation of the awards will take place over a period of two days. The fi rst day will be the indigenous comedy show and the following cate-gories will be awarded during the comedy show:

Best isicathamiya, best video, best poet, best newcomer, best traditional dance group, best Af-rican jazz, best praise singer, best vernacular hip hop, best mbaqanga, best Afro soul, best reggae, best female, best male, best traditional news jour-nalist (print), best traditional news journalist (elec-tronic), best provincial art and culture department, best vernacular local movie, best community radio DJ and best indigenous comedian.

During the second event, the main awards evening gala, prizes in the following categories will be awarded:

Best Xitsonga Album, best Tshivenda album, best Indian album, best SiSwati album, best IsiNdebele album, best SePedi album, best cultural talk show, best SeSotho album, best

Boeremusiek album, best IsiXhosa album, best San album, best SeTswana album, best Maskandi album, most downloaded song, best music radio programme song of the year, best traditional DJ, best radio station and founders awards.

The nominations will close on 26 July and the nominees will be announced on 16 August at the Mmabathu Convention Centre in the North West Province. All nominees will need to register by completing a nominee application form, which is available on the website and Facebook page or can be collected from the SATMA offi ces.

The completed forms, together with a CD or DVD of the material, must be forwarded to the SATMA offi ces to confi rm registration as a potential nominee. Completed forms can also be e-mailed to [email protected], with a CD or DVD sent to the SATMA offi ces at Old Mutual Place, 2 Torsvale Cresent, corner of Armstrong Avenue, La Lucia Ridge, 4019.

Queries related to nominations can be sent to Sizwe Mngadi at [email protected] and he can be contacted on 060 827 9423.

Pastors’ conference prays for end in crime

Local ritual murders in the spotlight

Chief Humbulani Nesengani, the senior traditional leader in the Nesengani area, has urged churches to continue doing the good work of bringing peace and development in his area.

The chief, who is also a medical doctor and has several villages under him, was the guest speaker during the annual Nesengani Interdenominational Pastors’ Forum conference last weekend. The conference, which prayed for an end to crime in the area, took place at the Fountain of Truth Church at Ha-Nesengani. Representatives from the 40 de-

nominations in the area attended the event.

One of the coordinators and chairperson of the forum, Pastor Nndanduleni Mudau, said the forum was born out of the need to foster unity among the different denominations in the Nesengani area. “We also pray for the end to crime in our villages and this is paying dividends as crime has gone down dramatically. The crime statistics, as informed by the police at Vuwani, showed that burglaries and rapes were high and we felt that there was nobody else who could put a stop on the

heinous crimes other than God.”Chief Nesengani commend-

ed the forum for initiating the conference, which he said was a catalyst for peace in his area. “As traditional leaders of this area, we urge the churches to continue working together in unity and not to waste precious time criticizing each other. Through this initia-tive we now have time to plan for development in our villages rather than wasting time on how we can beat crime. We are very grateful and commend them for the role they are playing in our communities,” he said.

The Vhembe District Munic-ipality, together with its four local municipalities, is organiz-ing a summit that will focus on the ritual killings in the district.

This was revealed by the exec-utive mayor, Cllr Tshitereke Mat-ibe, after the recent ritual killing of Mercy Ndou. She went miss-ing from her home in Shayandi-ma on 27 May and her mutilated body was found at Tswera village on 15 June.

Matibe said the municipality was very concerned about the increasing number of ritual mur-der cases, where people were found dead with body parts missing. “We sympathize with the families and communities affected. We condemn the acts

in the strongest terms. It is inhu-man to kill another person. The myth that one can benefit from killing someone is not true, and our people must know that. Our community must understand that for a business to succeed, you need stock,” said a very worried Matibe.

Matibe said his office was busy arranging a date when a summit on ritual killing would be held. The summit will involve different stakeholders such as clerics, busi-nesspeople, traditional healers and traditional leaders.

He expressed his worry that several youths might be involved in ritual killings. He also encour-aged the community to work hand in hand with the police to

make sure that the perpetrators are brought to book.

Cllr Tshitereke Matibe.

“Rasta life is one of peace and unity”

Ras Maphosa has not cut his dreadlocks for the past 18 years.

This 42-year-old dreadlocked Rasta has not cut his hair for the past 18 years! His name is Grigs Maphosa and he wears many hats in life.

He is a reggae artist, a spiritual counsellor and a weaver. Commonly known as Ras Maphosa, Grigs originally hails from Masvingo in Zim-babwe, but he is now a common figure in the border town of Musina, where he is settling for greener pastures.

As a performing artist, Ras Maphosa has one album under his belt, called Mandela. “The album was recorded in Chaseman Studios in Mozam-bique. I dedicated the album to Nelson Mandela because, according to me, he is the greatest man who ever lived in our modern times,” he said while swinging his long dreadlocks.

He says the album is doing well in Zimbabwe and Mozambique and it has also started receiving airplay on Musina Community Radio.

“It has been received well by music lovers, and I’m happy that people like my music. I was influenced by the music of Bob Marley and Peter

Tosh many years ago and that is how I fell in love with reggae music. My album comprises songs like Mandela, Blackman Story, Funeka, Too Late, Unity and Melania and two additional dub ses-sions. I mostly preach peace, love and unity in my songs because Jah loves us all in this world. The vision and ability of our father, Marcus Garvey, to unite people made me follow suit.”

He says there is much more to being a true Rasta.

“The beliefs of the Rastafarians are often mis-understood. To many, anyone who has dreads, smokes ganja, and plays reggae music is a Rasta. Rastafarianism is more than just a religion. It is a movement and a way of life. The Rasta life style is one of peace, love and unity.”

Asked if he would consider cutting his dread-locks in future, the defiant Ras Maphosa said: “No razor blade on my head until I die. This is my identity and all my powers and thinking ability are vested in my dreadlocks. I will definitely go to my grave with my beloved dreadlocks.”

Support for the youth of Nzhelele

Alleged petrol bomber attacks funeral parlour

A non-profit organisation, Funzanani Educa-tional Support, continues to empower young people in local communities.

On national Youth Day (June 16), the NPO held an event at Ha-Matsa Clinic in Nzhelele to motivate young people and influence them to refrain from engaging in delinquent behaviour. The organisation used the day to disseminate information about universities to secondary-school pupils.

According to the chairperson of the organisation, Mr Azwi Mukona, the organisation empowers young people and assists them in making the right decisions in life. He said that earlier this year they had helped seven students to acquire bursaries and to study at universities.

“This year, seven students are studying at the University of Venda and the University of Johan-nesburg. We also encourage young people to go to public FET colleges to nurture their future,” said Mr Mukona.

Mr Given Mamuthupi, the organisation’s trea-surer, said that young people in Nzhelele were engaging in crime instead of taking their education seriously. “We have helped many young people to shape their future,” he said.

Funeral parlour owner Shumani Matumba (right) and staff members busy retrieving caskets and coffins.

Blue Rain Funerals owner Shumani Matumba inspects the damage caused by the fire, estimated at more than R40 000.

Do not be fooled, this is not another mass funer-al. These are just coffins that survived the fiery flames caused by an alleged petrol bomber, who tried to destroy a leading funeral parlour in the Tsianda area.

Funeral undertaker Mr Shumani Matumba, the owner of Blue Rain Funerals at Tsianda, had a rude awakening on Monday when he opened his busi-ness to find that damage amounting to thousands of rands had been caused when his business was set alight by suspected arsonists.

Limpopo Mirror visited the funeral parlour on Monday to find workers retrieving burnt and part-ly damaged caskets and coffins outside the burnt business. Curious onlookers had also gathered at the scene and were watching on in dismay. “I have been running this business for years, and I have never experienced any problems. This is something that one never expects to happen, especially at a business that is associated with the dignity given to the departed. I do not have enemies, or if I have any, I do not know them. I have just finished building a modern mortuary at Khwekhwe, two kilometres from here. I think there are jealous people out there who do not want me to prosper,” said Matumba.

He said he was not discouraged. “I am a busi-

nessman who will not be distracted by evil people. I am more encouraged and this incident will make me work even harder to achieve my dream of giving the best service to my commu-

nity,” he said. He added that he was happy that he did not store bodies at his business.

A case of arson has been registered with the Levubu Police.

Adv Itani Mutambezo, acting senior manager corporative services in Mutale, surprised many when he went on stage with a guitar and rendered an item before the mayor delivered her speech.

Mayor Josephine Mukwevho and her husband, Mr Nakisani Mukwevho, photographed during the event.

Mutale Municipality has made more than R104 million available to provide services for the community in the new financial year.

This was revealed by Mayor Jo-sephine Mukwevho in her State-of-the-District address presented at the Tshilamba Community Hall two weeks ago.

Mukwevho said the money would come from property rates, rentals, traffic and licencing fees and also from grants and subsidies. She ap-pealed to communities and sector departments, however, to pay for services they receive from the munici-palities, so that they can maintain and speed up service delivery.

“Last year, I indicated that our municipality has a low revenue base, which impacts negatively on our ser-vice delivery. This is a challenge that needs all of us as the people of Mutale Municipality to realize our vision of developmental economic growth and equitable service delivery,” said Mukwevho.

Together with Eskom, the munic-ipality plans to electrify 860 units in the villages of Sheshe, Tsbhifume, Mabulo, Shakjadza, Tshiungani, Ma-sea, Matshena, Mapakoni, Manenzhe, Masisi and Bennde Mutale. Phase two of the tarring of streets at Tshilamba will also continue, while Tshixwadza village will get a sports facility and ring road.

She emphasised that the munici-pality was committed to improving services by maintaining streets and re-gravelling critical areas in this financial year. According to her, the Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs has allocated 450 houses to Mutale.

Mukwevho also added her voice by sympathizing with the families in Mu-tale who are victims of ritual killings. “We plead with our people to resist and refrain from such backward prac-tices and focus on getting economic skills to develop our community and country,” said Mukwevho.

Teachers from different schools of the Soutpansberg West cir-cuit who had completed the three-year administration and management courses received recognition during an event at the Madabani Christ Worship-ers Centre Fire House Church last Thursday.

According to the centre man-ager, Ms Octovia Nemavhola, the teachers successfully com-pleted the South African Ad-ministration and Management

Systems (SAAMS) technology programme. “We are focusing on capacity building of teachers, arming them with management skills,” she said.

She further said that the teach-ers and educators were exposed to the 10-phase learning method-ology, which uses management skills and face-to-face work-shops. “We need to expand the programme to the entire South Africa by establishing projects sites. This programme started in

2010, and we have already pro-duced more than 1 000 teachers around Vhembe. We intend supporting those teachers by conducting follow-up visits to schools throughout the Vhembe district,” she added.

The guest speaker, Ms Mu-kondeleli Makhari, the Vhembe district’s education manager for cooperative education, said that, through the initiative, educators used modern management skills through technology.

The Madodonga Progressive Forum recently donated school uniforms to 20 pupils of Madodonga Primary School in Ha-Kutama. The forum aims to develop the community and support pupils with career guidance.

Transport students receive certificates from TETAThirty-five rural students recently received their hard-earned certificates from the Transport Education Training Authority (TETA) during a ceremony held at Adam’s Apple Hotel.

They studied in partnership with the Makhado Long Distance Taxi Association (Malta). The programme started in May 2012 when TETA initiated a programme to help eliminate youth unemployment and create economic growth.

According to the secretary of Malta, Mr Chris Makananisa, the students who

received certificates were recruited from the community and were offered employ-ment at different places while completing their learnership. “I thank the students for having completed the programme and not giving up. This shows how committed and dedicated you are,” he told them.

Mr Ramodise Tsolo from TETA said education “is a journey, not a destination”. He urged all the students to use their skills wisely and assist where necessary. “We need to contribute to the alleviation of the national skills shortage by working

and assisting international agencies in fostering international standards.” He said the recent power cuts were a source of great concern which, if not addressed as a matter of urgency, would result in the loss of business and jobs, which would affect the country´s economy.

One of the students, Ms Salphina Maluma, appealed to departments and companies to make use of the students and give them a chance to use their newly acquired skills in the form of internships and learnerships.

Mr Mpho Malema of Chamdor Driver Training hands over a certificate to Ms Mary Babadu, and Mr Chris Makananisa is looking on.

The son of Amos Mbedzi, Doctor Mbedzi, photographed with his father’s picture during the campaign.

Rudzani Mbdzi (Amos’ younger brother), his mother Ms Muofhe Mbedzi and his other younger brother Lufuno photographed during the campaign.

“Please release Amos Mbedzi from Swazi prison”The Mbedzi family at Makonde village outside Thohoyandou is pleading with King Mswati of Swaziland to release their son, Amos Mbedzi, from prison. Mbedzi was sentenced to 85 years in prison by the Swaziland High Court in 2012, after being convicted of murder.

Speaking to the media during the "Release Amos Mbedzi Campaign," held at the Makonde Stadium on Saturday, Amos's mother, Ms Muofhe Mbedzi, said she was praying that Mswati would release her son, so that he could come back home and live a normal life with them.

The campaign was organized by the South Af-rican Communist Party (SACP). Mbedzi, an ANC and MKMVA member, was last seen at home in September 2008 during the funeral service of his grandmother, Ms Avheani Netshitungulwane.

His younger brother, Lufuno, says the family learnt that Mbedzi was involved in an incident in Swaziland in September 2008. He added that they heard that his brother was found guilty of trying to overthrow the Swaziland government.

One of Amos's two children, Doctor Mbedzi (18), says he misses the kindness and love of his father. "My father was everything to me. Now I just rely on memories we had when he was still here.”

Mr Skinjar Ramugumo, secretary of Alpheus Malivha branch of the SACP, stated that Mbedzi's release can only happen “if Swaziland attains its freedom from Mswati. Amos was arrested while supporting the freedom struggle of the people of Swaziland. It is clear that the most practical way for the safe return of Amos is through the victory of the freedom of Swazi people," says Ramugumo.

The campaign is supported by Swaziland Sol-idarity Network, the Communist League of Zim-babwe, Traditional Healers Association, churches, Mudzi Wa Vhurereli Ha Vhavenda, Umkhotho We Sizwe Mili tary Veterans Association, Congress of South Afri-can Trade Union, ANC and its affiliates, the Thulamela Municipal-ity, traditional leaders, students, unions and civic society from Swa-ziland, People's United Democratic Movement, Trade Union Congress of Swaziland, Commu-nist Party of Swaziland and several other local leaders.

New manager for Musina FMMs Selinah Tebogo Phiri, the new broom at Musina FM, is a strong-willed woman who is prepared to take the bull by the horns.

Born some 33 years ago at Mshenguville in Musina, Phiri, a former presenter and programme manager at the station, recently took over Musina FM’s hot seat as station manager. She took over the station, which has been rocked by a spate of resignations, amidst allegations of financial mismanagement.

She says she is working hard to bring the station to its former glory and has assembled a team of dedi-cated young men and women, who are all committed to taking the sta-tion to another level. Although she said that supervising a staff of more than 30 personnel was difficult,

Phiri said she was coping and took the challenges as a learning curve and tackled them as they presented themselves.

“We really mean business and would like to restore the glory days of the station where many listened to us as a station of choice,” she said.

Phiri, who in her formative years in radio presented programmes such as Tsumbavhuyo and A re Aganeng, said she had accumulated a wealth of experience at the station and knew the challenges and shortfalls of the station.

“We have big plans for the sta-tion, but need more modern equip-ment. We also sometimes do not have stipends for our staff members as we depend solely on adverts for revenue,” she said.

N e w b r o o m a t Mus ina FM Ms Tebogo Phiri i s determined to take the station to a higher level.

Chief Ramagoma in his own way resisted the move. Like in Palestine, his household and its belonging were carried to the new area, and we now commit him to his final place. With his passing on, a chapter of our history is closed. In a way, Chief Ramagoma continued to protest. He protested against holding the Office of the Chief -VhaMusanda. This royal busi-ness was too much for him. He finally accepted under im-mense pressure after 1994. He, in part, carried the burden like all who were conscious of the condition of being black dealt with on a daily basis. He too, though royalty, was employed and worked for the descendant of the earlier Europeans who came to know South Africa as home. He too, knew what it meant to wake up at 04:00 and warm up a bakkie in prepara-tion of going to work. He knew what it meant to be home after 19:00.

He understood the social and emotional deprivation of chil-

dren. In the midst of depriva-tion, the need to build a family and have cultured children, he too lived with the pain of an unfulfilled parent. It is this mix that created the consciousness that became the basis for our generation's protest and rejec-tion of being part of the then Venda homeland.

Though he was the provider of his family, he too wanted to have that intimacy with his children. Reality deprived him of this. However, he had the opportunity to have a word or two with his children during weekends.

In the early years of Vleifontein, a lot of people lost their livelihood. Forceful removal meant displacement. Most who had spaza-shops and could walk to and from their workplaces were placed in a situation where they had to go away to earn money. At that time, to many money was a rare commodity.

Most people lost their jobs. Other remained in constant conflict with their employers arising from transport chal-lenges. It became expensive to be in Vleifontein. This gave rise to a generation of indebt-ed families. Most became unemployed; all of a sudden the R500 that was sufficient for a family no longer met the demand. This had to be shared

with the bus company, and the bus price escalation has always been a bone of contention in Vleifontein. We mobilised the community around this trans-port challenge - it was the most immediate challenge.

In addition to this, he participated in what today are self-help block contributions aimed to assist when there is a funeral. The contributions bound the community together. Chief Ramagoma witnessed all this and he participated in the contribution during the early years.

We watched and experienced his generation's critical en-gagement with reality. In what seemed to be timidity of his generation, we were encour-aged to go to school. He, like all other parents, participated in our education; they used to be the dreaded school commit-tees that we saw as complicit with power.

Vha Musanda leaves us with a challenge to document our history as we experienced it. We are left with the need to set a new community agenda that will move from oral tradition to documenting our histories. True to his protest, his last resting place is Vleifontein, a place he called home. - Sello wa ha Madima, Director: Executive Support, Office of the Director General

Donation for needy

Another trophy for Powerlines

Young Santos ready for the play-offs

The life of several poor families in Jilongo, Mtititi and surrounding communities near Malamulele will change for the better after a visit and donation of food parcels by Thulamela local mayor Grace Mahosi.

Two weeks ago, these poor families received food parcels as part of the visit of the mayoral imbizo to assess service delivery in the area.

One of the beneficiaries, a disabled father of two children, Mr Johannes Maringa, said he was thankful for the donation of food parcels, which would help his family as he was unable to work. Maringa, of Mtititi-Plange, is partially paralysed and in a wheelchair.

“We promise to organize a new, modern wheel-chair for Mr Maringa,” Mahosi said.

During the event, Mahosi said that more than R280 million had been set aside this financial year for the maintenance of roads. She added that part of her visit was to assess the services that the communities in Jilongo and surrounding villages were receiving. “We understand that our communities in Jilongo and surrounding villages are worried about the bad state of roads and the shortage of water. We also brought along some government departments to allow them to assess the available services right there in the tents during the programme,” she added.

Tshaulu Powerlines are the 2014 Boy Nemakonde Soccer Challenge champions. They beat Dimani Young Masters 6-5 in the final of the competition at the Tshifudi Stadium on Saturday.

Powerlines received R2 500, a floating trophy and a complete soccer kit during a ceremony at the stadium after the final.

The runners-up, Dimani Young Masters, received a soccer kit, while Hlengani Simango of Powerlines was nominated the best player in the tournament. Simango was the top goal scorer, with four goals in the tournament.

Tshaulu Powerlines beat Mahagala Young Stars 3-2 at the same venue two weeks ago to secure a place in the final, while Young Masters’ way

to the final went via Tshaulu Soccer Academy, whom they beat 1-0.

During the ceremony, the sponsor, Mr Boy Nemakonde, revealed that he was impressed by the manner in which the tournament was run from the start.

He indicated that he will continue to sponsor the competition in the coming years, saying the sponsorship amount will increase from time to time. According to him, this year’s tournament was sponsored to the tune of R50 000.

Eight teams, Tshaulu Powerlines, Mahagala Young Stars, Dimani Young Masters, Tshaulu Soccer Academy, Munangwe United Broth-ers, Begwa United Brothers, Lukalo Hotspurs and Duvhuledza Flamingos, took part in the tournament

Mukula Young Santos are ready for the SAB League provincial play-offs that will soon be staged at the Giyani Stadium.

According to the team’s coach, Mr Eric “Taylor” Nevhutanda, everything is going well with their preparations and they continued to train as usual after their last champ-of-champs matches three weeks ago.

Young Santos beat Rockers FC through a penalty shootout after a 1-1 stalemate at full time to secure a place in the provincial playoffs.

Nevhutanda added that they had played a number of friendly matches during the past weeks as part of their preparations for the provincial play-offs. Their most recent preparatory match was against Mukula Fast XI, who beat them 4-3 in the final of the Mukula Safety and Security Soccer Challenge last Saturday.

The champions from the five regional associa-tions will battle it out in the provincial play-offs. The best two teams in the play-offs will be pro-moted to the Safa Second Division. Santos will pin their hopes on players like Tshimangadzo “Papi” Managa, Sharlen Munyamela and their vastly experienced overlapping midfielder, Humphrey “Ndoza” Takalani. Their goalkeeper, Ronewa Mavhungu, is one of the best in the league.

The Vhembe Regional Association was repre-sented by Joe Express FC in the provincial play-offs last season. Bellevue Winners Park, together with Joe Express FC, gained promotion to the higher division after finishing in the first and second position respectively.

Mr Boy Nemakonde congratulates the top goal scorer in the tournament, Hlengani Simango, during the ceremony. Simango was also the player of the tournament.

The captain of Powerlines, Ntsiruweni Mbedzi, receives his team’s trophy from Mrs Shandukani Nekamonde.

Dr Frank Chikaneat AFM conference

Professional advice crucial for retirement planning

Sports day improves the quality of life of elderly

The Apostolic Faith Mission Church of South Africa in the Soutpansberg Region will host their annual regional conference this weekend.

The conference takes place at the AFM Confer-ence Centre (Ha-Dumasi). According to Dr MM Maanzwane, regional chairperson of the church, the president of AFM international, Prof Frank Chikane, will attend the event. “Our theme for this year is The prevailing church and we are expecting our members, guests and members of the commu-nity in numbers,” said Maanzwane.

The event will start at 18:00 today (Friday). Fur-ther sessions will take place at 10:00 on Saturday and 10:00 on Sunday.

For more information, Maanzane at 083 492 2784 or 072 138 5287.

Deciding how to invest your retirement fund money is not about completing forms. Instead, it is about making one of the biggest financial decisions of your life.

Karin Muller, head of Sanlam’s growth market solutions, says the latest research results from the Sanlam benchmark survey show that a third of all South Africans, when faced with important decisions about their retirement fund savings options, did not make use of professional financial advice but relied on their own knowledge, that of a colleague, their human resources department or their employer.

“To put this into perspective, an import-ant consideration is that a staggering 88% of people who are financially better off in their retirement received professional financial advice.”

This, she says, is clear evidence of how critical it is to ensure that you obtain ad-vice from a professional when you make

some of the most important financial decisions of your life.

“Retirement fund members don’t understand that retirement planning and providing for retirement should start on day one of their employment or the date of joining their retirement fund.

“The retirement planning decisions people make while they are employed will ultimately determine how comfortably they are able to live during retirement. Unfortunately, most retirement fund members only start considering retirement when they get closer to retirement.”

Apart from seeking professional advice, the latest Sanlam benchmark survey shows that people who are indeed able to retire comfortably also share a number of other successes:

* They started saving for retirement a few years earlier than the average person.

* They saved more each month during their working lives.

* They preserved their savings when they changed jobs.

* When they retired, they reinvested their lump sums to bolster their retirement income.

* They had additional sources of sav-ings, such as other retirement annuities.

Muller says it is worrying that just 29% of South Africans are able to maintain their standard of living in retirement. What’s more, people who retire now ex-perience longer retirements, but have less money to live on and many are looking after dependants in their retirement.

“The starting point, it seems, is to ensure that you treat your retirement planning as a priority from the very day that you join a company’s retirement fund. This means you should obtain professional advice on how to make the most of your investment in the fund and review your planning on a regular basis.” (Article by Sanlam)

Elders from the Thulamela Municipality participated in a fun walk and football games two weeks ago at the Mala-mulele stadium during the municipality’s annual senior citizen sports day.

The senior citizen sports day is meant to provide an entertain-ment platform for senior citizens, specifically the elderly above the age of 60. Elders who belong to various community groups or sports clubs participated in the games.

Special programmes coor-dinator at the municipality Ms Shibombi Mkhari said the games enhanced and built on the re-

lationship between young and elderly people in the municipal-ity. “The main objective of these games is to enhance the quality of life and improve the health of older persons and to embrace ac-tive ageing. These games further create awareness of the abilities and capabilities of elderly people in sport and recreational activi-ties,” said Mkhari.

“Our senior citizens continue to play a vital role in society at large. They have always made major contributions, including the freedom we enjoy today,” said Mkhari.

Councillor Lazarus Baloyi welcomed all participants and

said the elderly had contr ibuted immensely to the attainment of free-dom.

“As a result, they deserve to enjoy the fruits of freedom,” he said.

T h e 6 5 - y e a r -old Mrs Masutha Mudanalwo from Mapate village in-sisted that regular exercise decreased t h e c h a n c e s o f falling ill. “These exercises will de-crease diseases such as diabetes, cancer, strokes and heart-re-lated diseases, and this could work to our advantage,” said Mudanalwo.

Members of Makhuvha Masters photographed before the football match at the Malamulele stadium on Saturday.

As part of their 16th wedding celebrations, Pastor NT Ramuhuyu and his wife, Gladys, renewed their wedding vows during a ceremony at the Tshedza Guest House Hall in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) a fortnight ago. Pastor Ramuhuyu is also the general manager of the MMK Funeral Services Company. He worked as a traffic officer for almost 30 years before joining the funeral service industry three years ago.

Driving school to sponsor youth soccerMudz Driving School and In-surance Brokers will continue to sponsor the Youth Day Soccer Challenge. This was revealed by the manager of the company, Mr Abel Mudzanani, during the recent prize-giving ceremony of the competition at Tshiozwi.

Mudzanani said he decided to finance the competition because he realised the importance of sport at grassroots level.

He said he was confident that

other businesspeople would fol-low his example. “Sport has the power to create a good climate between business and people,” he added. One of the organisers, Mr Victor Mafunise, thanked the management of the sponsors, Mudz Driving School Insur-ance, Mafenedza and Muvhango Construction and Slango Tomb-stones, saying that few business-people realised the importance of developing the community through sponsorships. He praised

the sponsors for their decision to sponsor football. He stated that he was convinced that the teams would produce national players soon. The champions, Tshiozwi Dynamos, received R2 000, gold medals and a floating trophy, and the runners-up, Tshiozwi Mates, R 1000 and silver medals.

The third-placed Gogobole Bucs received bronze medals and R200 and Gogobole Home Defenders, who ended in fourth position, received R200.

New soccer equipment for Young ChiefsA local soccer team, Muduluni Young Chiefs, which plays un-der the banner of the Makha-do Local Football Association, received a huge boost from Zwitani Driving School.

They received a new soccer kit, 15 pairs of soccer boots, soccer nets and balls. The of-ficial handing over was held at Muduluni a week ago.

The youths had been playing soccer in old clothes for a very long time. They could not believe their eyes when a local company handed them brand new soccer kit and three soccer balls last week.

According to the manager of Zwitani, Mr Joe Mulelu, the donation was a way of giving back to the com-munity. “We have been touched by the plight of the youths, who seemed committed and dedicated to sports but lacked resources. We then decided to buy them a brand new soccer kit,” he said. Mulelu stated that, as a company, they felt obliged to assist the government in its ef-forts to fight crime, hence their decision to take the children off the streets through a sponsorship. He said

the company was looking for-ward to seeing the team produce players that will feature in the national team in coming years.

According to Mulelu, they will possibly increase the spon-sorship.

“The sponsorship is a token of appreciation for the support we are getting from our local com-munities,” he said. According to him, the company is growing remarkably as a result.

Mr Taka lan i Maphaha

of Muduluni Young Chiefs thanked Zwitani Driving School and other sponsors for develop-ing soccer in the rural areas and said it was very wise for the owner to plough back what he received from the community. He stated that it was important that future stars´ talent should be identified at grassroots level. He said that the sponsorship would serve as a motivating factor to the players.

During the hanging over of equipment are, from left to right, Messrs Tshifhiwa Lirabela of Young Chiefs, Takalani Maphaha (from Young Chiefs) and Joe Mulelu (sponsor).

Monday morning was a terrible time to start conducting business for two shops in Makhado. A watery pool of faeces, accompanied by a stinking smell, greeted staff and customers on their arrival at the stores. Talisman and Hygrotec were flooded when sewage pipes burst adjacent to the buildings. The shop managers tried on numerous occasions to contact the municipality to attend to their problem. Workers from the Makhado municipality later alleviated the problem by disconnecting the pipe from the main sewerage line. The store owners, however, decided to hire a plumber who could fix their problem. Mr Eddy Denga, an employee at Hygrotec, said the situation direly affected their business operation. “The municipal officials told us that they cannot fix the problem inside the yard,” he said. The Hygrotec store manager, Anne-Marie Jankei, said the sewage problem was a persisting one. “We have lost thousands and most of the stock has been affected. The smell is also unbearable,” she said. Talisman branch manager Mr Laurie Bannatyne used his own truck to drain the water on Monday. In the photo, employees at the Talisman Makhado branch try to drain the smelly substance that had pooled up inside the store.

Tshaulu Powerlines are the 2014 Boy Nemakonde Soccer Challenge champions. They beat Dimani Young Masters 6-5 in the final of the competition at the Tshifudi Stadium on Saturday. In our photo the winners are celebrating their vicgtory. See more of the event on page 18.

Mukhethwa Madzhuta of Powerlines controls the ball.

Tshaulu Powerlines win challenge after gruelling shoot-outTshaulu Powerlines beat Dimani Young Masters 6-5 after a penalty shoot-out, to lift the Boy Nemakonde Soccer Challenge trophy at the Tshifudi Stadium on Saturday.

The game was evenly contested, with the goal-keepers pulling off some brilliant saves. The play-ers were committed to displaying clean football as only one yellow card was flashed in the game. Maipfi Siala of Young Masters recklessly tackled Ronewa Tshibubudze just outside the penalty box and the referee, Mr Shumani Tinyani, reprimanded him with a card.

No goal was scored in the first half. The first 10 minutes of the last half was the busiest time for the goalkeepers. Powerlines' Rastafarian striker, Lufuno Musetsho, unleashed from the edge of the box in the 49th minute. Masters’ keeper, Ndinnyi Munyai, palmed the ball away for a corner kick. That was a wake-up call for Young Masters. They took the game to their opponents soon afterwards. Their leading goal scorer, Robert Mudau, tried his

luck from inside the box with a ground cutter. Powerlines’ keeper, Ronald Mudau, braved the shot and executed a brilliant save, much to the disappointment of the Masters fans.

Young Masters took the lead

in the 59th minute. Samuel Mu-vhango finished off a rebound after the keeper of Powerlines mishandled. Powerlines did not lose hope, although time was fast running out for them. They found the equalizer through a substitute,

Mulisa Mukwevho, in the dying minutes of the game.

During the penalty shoot-out, Powerlines converted all five their chances, while Young Masters scored four from the white spot.

Gogobole Home Defenders deposited three points into their account when they beat Maebane Peace Makers 1-0 in a Limpopo Diary League match played at Gogobole on Sunday.

Makers approached the match like a house on fire, with their midfielders distributing good passes to their strikers. They threat-ened to score in the early minutes when Mulalo Mashau forced his way through the defence of Defenders. He passed the ball to Ambani Maboko, who missed the target by inches.

In the 28th minute, Defenders p ressed hard in search of more goals. Realizing that their chances were slim, Makers abandoned their positions and packed themselves at the far back . Maboko un-leashed a powerful shot from outside the box and the keeper of De-fenders, Mulalo Mapha-ha, saved the ball.

Shandukani Phadziri and Tshishonga Tsh-ishonga of Defenders were booked for dif-ferent infringements. The home team brought

on Dakalo Mabege for Mulalo Lithole.

His introduction changed the complexion of the match as he dished dangerous passes to his team strikers.

Makers should have scored, but their chance was denied by

acrobatic goal keeper Mulalo Maphaha, who palmed the ball out for corner kick. The veteran player, Tshimomo Mbambu of Defenders, scored his team's goal in the 74th minute after he finished off a square ball from Tondani Phadziri.

Mulalo Lithole of Defenders attacks the ball.

Three points for Gogobole’s Defenders

Prince Ndlovu from Malamulele is the new pro-vincial featherweight champion after beating Sydney Maluleke on points during the profes-sional boxing tournament at the Thohoyan-dou Town Hall last Saturday evening.

Ndlovu, who went to Saturday’s bout with seven wins out of 11 fi ghts since he turned professional, convincingly dominated the fi rst six rounds of the 10-round bout.

A new provincial bantamweight cham-pion, Klaas Mboyane, was also crowned during the tournament. He beat Pfariso Neluvhalani by a TKO in the sixth round. The referee, Mr Ben Ncapai, was forced to stop the fi ght as Neluvhalani was taking severe punishment. He was knocked down twice before the referee came to his rescue.

Rofhiwa Nemushungwa from Tshifudi village was too strong for Thizwilondi Nempandoni. Although their junior featherweight bout was scheduled over six rounds, it only lasted only four. An uppercut on the nose forced Nempandoni to concede defeat. At that stage, Nem-pandoni was bleeding profusely from the nostrils.

Hamisi Guluka from Tanzani beat Tshifhiwa Munyai on points. It was an evenly contested bout, but judges Zinakile, Mani and Mathoho ruled in favour of Guluka.

Vincent Mulaudzi beat Ali Muhammed Salman in their catchweight bout. It took Mulaudzi only 52 seconds to bring Salman down to the fl oor. Reuben Kadiaka could not match Nyelisani Thagambega and was defeated with a TKO in the fi rst round, while Tswarelo Motswene from Mahwelereng beat Moloko Phela on points in their fl yweight bout over four rounds.
