There is more involved in an offer at work than it seems. AQUARIUS January 20-February 18 Slow down, Aquarius. You’ve been taking on more than your fair share for far too long. Pull back and take time out to smell the roses. A loved one shares a secret. PISCES February 19-March 20 Money may be tight, but creativity is not. There is a lot to do for little. Think outside of the box, Pisces, and keep your plans on track. ARIES March 21– April 19 Run, Aries, run. If something seems off, it probably is. A change in scenery helps an old friend heal. Invite them over for a little celebration. TAURUS April 20-May 20 Yikes, Taurus. You played a little too hard, and it almost cost you. Time to switch tactics and take a gentler approach. You won’t believe what transpires. GEMINI May 21-June 21 Love blossoms in spite of the odds, and you make it all happen, Gemini. Give yourself a pat on the back. The bidding begins for a cherished piece.

LEO July 23-August 22 Boredom sets in at home, and it’s up to you, Leo, to rev things up. Turn your attention outside for ideas. A analysis concludes and the results are incredible. VIRGO August 23-September 22 Perfection does not exist, so why are you insisting on it, Virgo? Focus on all that has been done well rather than the bit that hasn’t, and progress will be made. LIBRA September 23-October 22 Remember, Libra. What goes around comes around. Be careful how you proceed. A friend suffers a financial setback, but it is only temporary.

SCORPIO October 23-November 21 Alas, Scorpio. You held out hope to the very end, but it wasn’t meant to be. Don’t worry about it. Another opportunity will arise. A romance heats up. SAGITTARIUS November 22-December 21 Uh-oh, Sagittarius. The truth finally comes out, and not everyone is pleased. You can’t make everyone happy, now can you? A book inspires.

(NAPSA)-According to a survey by Harris

Interactive, 75 percent of military families believe

that owning a home is one of the most important

things to service members upon returning from

active duty. The reasons include a desire to have

their own residence (73 percent), establishing a

household (43 percent), and financial security (36

percent). In addition, the majority of veterans (88

percent) said that owning a home makes them feel

safer.

While one roadblock that veterans face in the

pursuit of homeownership is securing steady

employment, they display a generally positive atti-

tude in regard to potential employers and posi-

tions.

• More than two-thirds believe that employers

appreciate their unique skills learned in the mili-

tary, while the same 67 percent believe employers

are eager to hire veterans.

• It's important to note, however, that nearly half

agree that their skill set does not match the

requirements for many available positions.

• Only one in five considered opening their own

business when they returned home from the mili-

tary.

All totaled, finding a suitable home and employ-

ment and assimilating back into civilian life are

challenges many veterans and their families face.

Fortunately, services for veterans, including

employment, mental health programs, housing

and other special care services, are available.

For example, Easter Seals provides direct services

to the new and unmet needs of tens of thousands

of service members returning from Iraq and

Afghanistan, and "Recruiting America's He_roes,"

offered by Century 21 Real Estate LLC, the fran-

chisor of the world's largest residential real estate

sales organization, provides returning veterans

who are interested in becoming real estate agents

with specific benefits to make a smooth transition.

Former military personnel get special training

programs and continuing education courses, dis-

counts, and waived annual global conference reg-

istration fees.

Anyone interested in learning more about the

resources available to active and retired service

members can call the Easter Seals Community

(NAPSA)-During Medicare's annual open enroll-

ment period, which ends December 7, millions of

Medicare beneficiaries must decide on their

Medicare Advantage (MA) health plan for the

coming year. While many factors go into deciding

about a plan-cost, choice of doctors, benefits-

there's one important question Medicare benefici-

aries should ask: What is the quality rating of the

plans I'm considering?

A high rating means better health care and the

best value for your money. Medicare uses a system

called Star Ratings. Plans receive a rating of up to

five stars. These ratings are based on things like

how well the plan does at keeping people healthy

by making sure they get the treatments, tests and

vaccines they need to prevent illness, how quickly

you can get an appointment and see specialists,

and how the plan responds to your complaints

and concerns.

For 2014, over a third of MA plans will receive

four or more stars, which is an increase from 28

percent in 2013. Seven of the 11 MA plans earn-

ing five stars this year are members of the

Alliance of Community Health Plans, an organi-

zation representing the nation's leading health

plans.

You can learn more about MA plans-and their

quality ratings-using the Medicare Plan Finder at

www.Medicare.gov. MA plans are called

"Medicare Health Plans" in the Plan Finder.

The National Committee for Quality Assurance

also evaluates quality in MA plans; those rankings

can be found at www.ncqa.org.

• Ms. Smith is president and CEO of the Alliance

of Community Health Plans, www.achp.org.

Understanding Medicare

People on Medicare can change plans or enroll inone for the first time by December 7 - or they’llhave to wait until next year.

SAFETY TIPS Safety: Off The Road (NAPSI)—Whether you’re having fun on an ATV (all-terrain vehicle) or in an ROV (recreational off-highway vehicle), staying safe can be as simple as ABC and 123.

A. Learn the differences between the types of vehicles: ROVs, also called side-by-sides, have a steering wheel, acceleration foot pedal and brake foot pedal. ATVs have a handlebar for steering, a throttle controlled by a thumb lever, and hand levers and a foot pedal for the brakes. Most ATVs are designed for one rider who straddles the machine, out in the open. With an ROV, it’s important to wear the seat belt and keep all arms and legs inside the vehicle at all times.

B. Get the size right: It’s critical that ATV riders be the right size for their machines. Children should not ride adult-sized ATVs, though youth-model ATVs let kids as young as 6 enjoy riding under adult supervision. ROVs are only for operators age 16 or older with a valid driver’s license.

C. Protective gear: Riders of either vehicle need proper helmets that meet Department of Transportation standards, eye protection, gloves,

long sleeves and pants, and sturdy boots. An ROV should have seat belts, a rollover protective structure, side retention features and handholds.

1. Ride right: These vehicles are for off- road use only and should be taken exclusively on designated trails.

2. Ride sober: Neither should ever be operated while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

3. Get safety trained: Both should be used only after proper training, through the ATV Safety Institute (www.atvsafety.org) or the Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association (www.ROHVA.org). Then go

have fun—safely—off-road.

Love to Fish? Make a Vacation of it! By Tresa Erickson

An avid angler, you’re always looking for new opportunities to engage in the activity. You’ve fished all of the local hot spots as well as many in-state ones. Now you’re ready to venture beyond the state

lines, and your spouse has suggested you make a vacation of it. Fishing vacations run the gamut from short weekend trips at popular lakeside resorts to extended package tours at remote sites. You can even go on a fishing trip abroad. You can plan your own fishing vacation or you can seek the help of a travel agent or a fishing guide. Before you do anything, you need to determine what type of trip you’re after. Do you want to do some freshwater or saltwater fishing? Do you want to fish for trout, bass or some other species? Do you want to fly solo or fish with a group? Do you want to travel near or far? The answers to these questions should give you some idea of the vacation you are seeking and where you should start your search. If you are looking for a

Big Boys & Their Toys page 4

saltwater adventure among friends in a remote location, then you will probably want to call a travel agent and look for a package deal. If you are looking to learn a lot in a popular freshwater lake up north, you may want to hire a fishing guide. As with any vacation, you will want to look for the best deals and check out the amenities offered. Find out the perks and the rates. Off-season rates are usually lower. However, the fish may not be biting as well then. Make sure you check out the conditions of the waters you will be fishing. Deciding to go on a fishing vacation is easy. Planning one, on the other hand, can be difficult. Check out all of the options and do your best to select the right one, even if it is just loading up the pickup, driving across the state line and pitching a tent near some stream.

Bow Hunting for Beginners By Sam Erickson A bow and arrow is one of the world’s oldest forms of hunting. Cavemen stalked ancient animals across the world, but the bow and arrow fell out of favor with hunters with the advent of more powerful guns. Today, bow hunting is returning to popularity, with many people citing it is a more natural way to hunt and others simply enjoying the new challenge of a different kind of weapon. While many of the hunting aspects are similar, using a bow is a more complex process that takes time and practice. Probably the most important thing to know about bow hunting is how to shoot.

First, you’ll want to spend some quality time shooting at hay bales or other safe targets in order to get your mechanics down. Like any kind of athletic activity, bow hunting requires muscle development and muscle memory in practice so you can perform when the time comes. Consistency is key in your pull. Pull the bow apart, with steady pressure going forward and backward. Don’t worry about your aim just yet. One technique that some use is to shoot with their eyes closed so they can focus on the motion. You don’t even have to release the arrow to practice this feel.

Once you have developed this muscle memory, which won’t happen overnight, you

can begin to aim at targets. Many people will recommend you alternate between a target and focusing on the draw. This alternation can help you to remember to focus on that draw, as a target often focuses the mind and distracts from the essential mechanics. If you want to increase the pressure and mimic a real hunting scenario, you can get a friend or relative to antagonize you as you shoot, helping you to develop your concentration and experience the pressure of a real shoot. If you are involving anyone, be sure that you are safe and that they never cross the line of sight of the weapon.

Shooting a bow and arrow is a process that involves the whole body. Many people see the draw arm as the most important, but the support for the weapon really comes from the bow arm. Many people find it difficult to draw the bow originally, taking time to develop those muscles. It’s just as important to develop the muscles in the bow arm because that provides the primary support. Arms should be kept in parallel and straight out from the shoulder. Feet should be kept parallel to one another and perpendicular to the target, providing stability to the body.

It can take a very long time to become a good shooter with a bow, but these easy steps, while not always exciting or glorious, will bring you closer to bringing down your trophy when you are out in the woods. Time and practice before will save you headache and heartache later one.

Boaters: Have a Hassle-Free Summer by Doing Seven Winter Projects Now ALEXANDRIA, Va., February 18, 2014 -- Boaters can get frustrated when a repair or upgrade takes a lo ng time, but delays are often a simple result of supply and demand. “Spring and summer can be the most challe nging times to get work done on a boat because everyone else wants their work at the same time,” said Boat US Director of Consumer Affairs Charles Fort. But with a little foresight boaters can get the services they need – sometimes at a better price – now. And some things on a winter ‘to do’ list don’t require outside he lp. Here are some common projects boaters should be looking at doing now, before the spring rush:

Engine and Prop: Getting your boat’s motor worked on in June is like waiting to buy Billy Joel ticke ts at the door. Get your mechanic on it now if you have a project in mind. It’s also the time to have the dings take n out of the prop – your prop shop guy will be glad to see you.

Canvas and Sails: Canvas and sail lofts are notoriously cyclical businesses so don’t feel guilty abo ut asking for a discount on winter work. Now is the time to get the new bimini top made, repair the camper canvas, o r get the sail stitched up.

Inside And Out By Tresa Erickson Whether you’re selling or maintaining your car, a good detail job can go a long way in keeping it looking its best. You can undertake the thorough cleaning yourself or you can take advantage of the services offered at thousands of auto detailers nationwide. Whatever route you take, you can expect the following areas to be covered.

Exterior A car’s exterior can take a real beating over the years. Most exterior detail jobs involve the cleaning, polishing and protecting of many facets of a car’s exterior, including the paint, chrome trim, windows, wheels and tires. There are several techniques and products available to do this from

acids and degreasers to waxes and polishes.

Interior Like the exterior, a car’s interior can take a real beating over time, especially in households with kids or areas with harsh weather. Interior detail jobs include an extensive cleaning of the dash, panels, windows, upholstery and carpet. Depending upon the service you select, the seats may be removed from the car to ensure a good cleaning. Again, a variety of techniques and products may be used, including steam cleaning.

Engine No auto detail would be complete without the pop of the hood and an

Trade-In Time By Tresa Erickson When it comes time to buy a new car, some people sell their old one while others use it for a trade-in. While selling usually brings the best price, trading in a vehicle is a lot less hassle. The dealership usually handles all of the paperwork for the trade-in, and all you have to do is sign on the dotted line. Dealerships won’t pay as much for trade-ins due to the costs incurred in selling them, but you can get a fair price by prepping your car for the trade beforehand.

Clean sells, so clean your car, inside and out. Wash and wax the exterior. Vacuum and dust the interior. Clean the engine and top off the fluids. Car still not up to your standards? Have it detailed. While it will cost you, a good detail job can get you hundreds more in trade-in value.

Condition sells, so make sure your car is in good condition. Have your vehicle inspected by a quality mechanic and make any necessary minor repairs. Have the oil changed and the tires rotated. Gather your maintenance records, along with a vehicle history report and an inspection report, to prove that you have indeed taken care of your car.

Do your homework and research the trade-in value of your car. There are several websites to assist you with this endeavor and you will probably uncover a low, average and high retail value. Don’t overestimate the trade-in value of your car. Chances are the dealership will give you the average trade-in value, unless it has a lot of wear and tear. In that case, you might receive a low trade-in value.

Once you know the trade-in value, you can determine where the best deals are and negotiate a good deal. If the price offered for your trade-in seems too low, you can use the knowledge and documentation you have gathered to get a better deal.

engine cleaning. Steam and degreasers can do wonders to improve the look of an engine.

While body panels may be sanded to eliminate scratches, most detail work does not include major bodywork or repair. Depending upon where you go, various detail services may be available and prices

may vary according to the size of vehicle you have. Detailers may offer everything from a complete detail package to an exterior wash and wax. No matter how much or how little you have done, your car will look better and you will feel better driving or selling it.

Weapon of Choice By Craig W. Armstrong Most hunters prefer one weapon to another. Some like to hunt with a rifle, some with a shotgun, some with a bow and some with all three. Of course, prey can determine what weapon is used as can the hunting season. While guns and bows are popular, they are not the only lethal hunting instruments available. Do you like to hunt with a bow? Why not try a crossbow? Crossbows offer some advantages over long bows or compound bows. They are easier to cock using a string or wind-up cocking device. They are also easier to aim. They do take some room to cock, however, and sitting in a tree stand might make that difficult. It also takes more time to reload a crossbow. Think you have good aim? Try hunting with a slingshot. Hunting with a slingshot takes a great amount of skill and practice. Hunting slingshots are more than a tree branch and a rubber band. Today’s models are state of the art. They are lethal weapons and should be treated as such. The ammunition used is usually steel ball bearings. These weapons are great for hunting rabbits or squirrels, but you won’t want to go bear hunting with them. Another nontraditional weapon, at least in America, is the boomerang. In the hands of someone who knows how to use it, a boomerang

can take down sizable game. Hunting boomerangs are non-returning and can be used as a tool and even for hand-to-hand combat. The aborigines call them “kylies,” and they know how to use them. These flying tomahawks can be used for hunting everything from birds and bats to kangaroos and emus. One type of boomerang can be thrown and used to stun the animal and another to kill and clean it. Want a real challenge? Hunt with a blowgun. Like modern slingshots, blowguns are high tech and available at sporting goods stores. The concept is simple. Hitting something with a blowgun is hard. While most people don’t hunt with them, they are used for recreational target shooting and some people even load them with paintballs. Like the slingshot, blowguns are not for hunting big game. It’s important to remember that not all these weapons are legal to hunt with in all states. So, before you go deer hunting with a crossbow, make sure it’s legal. The hunter’s weapon of choice can be as important as their quarry. For a change of pace, don’t forget about other types of weaponry. The rabbit might not taste better if you tell everyone at the table that you got it with a slingshot, but it would certainly make for a good story.

The Hunt For Safety By Craig W. Armstrong If you’re a seasoned hunter, you’ve probably heard all of this before, but a refresher course never hurts. If you’re new to hunting, these tips might keep you safe. Take a moment to give this a read and avoid trouble on the game trail. Humans have been hunting since the beginning of time, first for food and survival and currently for food and sport. Hunting is a way of life engrained in American culture, and many learn to do it at an early age. Because hunting involves firearms and bows and arrows, safety is important. Here are some tips to follow in the field. When dealing with firearms, one rule applies above all else: TREAT EVERY GUN AS A LOADED GUN. Guns are deadly weapons and should be respected. They should never be pointed at something you do not intend to shoot. When you are ready to fire a gun, make sure you know what you are firing at. Never shoot at movement or sound. You can’t un-fire the weapon, so make sure your target is not another person. Next, consider the transportation of your weapon. Make sure the weapon’s safety is on until you are ready to fire. As you walk the woods stalking your game, keep the barrel of the gun pointed down. At some point during your hunt, you will probably need to climb something. Never climb with your gun, even if the safety is on. Ask your hunting buddy to

hold your weapon while you do your climbing. Then, have them hand back your weapon to you. Do the same for them. Don’t hunt alone. The wilderness can be a dangerous place. Accidents can happen and being alone can make matters worse. Should you choose not to hunt with a buddy, let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return. It is a good idea to wear hunter’s orange and bring along a first aid kit. An orange vest and/or pants will allow others to see you more easily. A first aid kit won’t take up a lot of room and it’s better to have one and not need it than to need one and not have it. Speaking of gear, make sure all your gear, including your weapon, is in working order before you set out on your hunt. Finally, don’t drink and hunt. There will be plenty of time to have a few cold ones once the hunt is over. Once you fire the shot and drop the game, don’t assume it’s over. Check the animal and make sure it is dead. You don’t want to wind up with a deer waking up in the back of your truck. Hunting is a sport with a history like no other. It is truly something the whole family can enjoy. Just make sure you follow these safety rules and use common sense.

HELOISEʼS KITCHENEERING BY HELOISE A Good, Clean Apple

Dear Heloise: Every morning, I enjoy reading your hints in the Tyler (Texas) Morning Telegraph. I have a question about how to WASH MY APPLES. The skin has a waxy feel on the outside. Someone told me to just peel them, but that takes time and is messy. I sure would like to have a good, clean apple! -- Carolyn S. in Texas

You can get one very easily while preserving the skin, which contains fiber and some nutrients. You can run it under water, rubbing with your hands or a paper towel, or use a vegetable brush. The Food and Drug Administration does not recommend using any detergents or soaps.

Did you know that apples make their own natural wax coating? Most of that natural wax is removed when the apples are harvested and washed. An approved (safe to eat) wax is then applied before apples are sold. This wax keeps moisture in and prolongs the shelf life. But mainly, most people just prefer the look of a nice, shiny apple! -- Heloise

SEND A GREAT HINT TO: Heloise P.O. Box 795000 San Antonio, TX 78279-5000 Fax: 210-HELOISE Email: Heloise(at)Heloise.com MAYO VS. DRESSING Dear Readers: In Heloise Central, we

were talking about mayonnaise and salad dressing spread, and we started wondering if they are the same, but if not, what is the difference? Here is what we found:

They are similar, but not the same thing. Mayonnaise is thicker and is made of oil, egg and vinegar. To be labeled as “mayonnaise,” it must have at least 65

percent oil by weight. Salad dressing spread is not as thick,

is made with less oil and has added spices (like paprika), which makes it sweeter-tasting.

What you prefer often comes down to which was used in the household when you were growing up. -- Heloise MICROWAVE MAGIC

Dear Heloise: Sometimes microwaving stale baked goods can make them seem fresher. If a roll or breakfast pastry is old, wrap it in a damp paper towel (one that has been thoroughly wet and then wrung dry). Microwave at the lowest setting for about 10 seconds. The end result is amazingly like fresh. -- Susan J. in Virginia

EGG SUBSTITUTE Dear Heloise: We have a lot of recipes

we want to try that call for “egg substitute.” Since we never buy that, we are wondering if you could tell us how much one raw egg would equal if you are using an egg substitute. -- R.I.H., via email

Very good question, and many people are using egg substitute to watch cholesterol intake and calories. So, here is the conversion chart:

One large egg equals 1/4 cup of egg substitute.

Two large eggs equal 1/2 cup. Four large eggs equal a cup. -- Heloise

OPEN BOTH ENDS Dear Heloise: When I open a can of

tomato paste, refried beans or any other thick and pasty item, I open both ends, then remove the bottom and push the contents through from the top down. This is a no-mess way to get all of the contents out. -- Carol T. in California
