Provost's Report to College Senate

AnnouncementThe Subcommittee on Guiding Principles for Establishing the Academic Calendar was charged with the following.Draft a document of guiding principles and prepare recommendations to present to the Calendar Committee. Create a revised calendar for the Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 based on the recommended principles.

Statement of Guiding Principles from Subcommittee

The SUNY Oneonta Academic Calendar will be constructed with Student Learning as its primary internal consideration, which includes but is not limited to the necessary preparation, instruction, student gestation/mastery, and thorough assessment of scholarly classroom work in a manner consistent with the institutions commitment to educational excellence. The calendar will foster an academic culture that honors scholarship and respects teaching and learning. The calendar will be deferential to best practices in higher education while being flexible enough to encourage pedagogical innovation, research, and creative activities. As a secondary consideration, the Academic Calendar will respect the operations performed by campus units that require synchronization to provide a safe and receptive learning, teaching, working, and living community. Other campus operational issues shall follow as tertiary considerations in the construction of the Academic Calendar.Lastly, after the first three considerations have been assured, issues external to the campus will be taken into account. The College Calendar must comply with all requirements set forth by the State University of New York and the New York State Education Department. Statement was approved by Calendar Committee on 14 November 2012
