XMAS FOOD FOR YOUR DOG

Share some cheer at xmas

... but be aware there are somefoods that can be deadly to yourdog

There are some ingredients in large amounts that can bedeadly to your pet. Sometimes those ingredients may becalled for in very small "flavoring" quantities. If you seeany of these ingredients in a recipe you'd like to use thenyou should consult with your vet to see if the recipe isappropriate for your pet otherwise leave the ingredientout or select another recipe. Here are some potentiallyharmful ingredients:

Chocolate - while milk or dark chocolate is dangerousfor dogs, white chocolate is safe. The reason being, mostall the caffeine substance in white chocolate has beenremoved. White chocolate is primarily cocoa fat, sugar, milk solids, lecithin and vanilla with next to no "chocolateliquor" the substance hazardous to dogs.

Xylitol (an artificial sweetener)AlcoholCooked bonesOnionsNuts & dried fruitsHamGrapes & raisons

FIGHTINGFLEAS

Fleas suck blood, make puppies anaemic and your dog itchy. They spread tapeworm. Dogs can become allergic to fleas. Below is a range of products available to kill fleas from your vet, or pet

supplies places like Petbarn.None claim to be the perfect solution, and soe work better on some dogs and not others. So you may need to

try a few different ones to find what works for your dog.

Spot on preparationsThese products come in small vials that you squeeze onto your pet’s neck once a month.

Advantagekillss adult fleas. As well, micro-crystals of the preparation drop from the animal's coat into the areas that the pet visits, such as its bed and its resting spots in the garden. These micro-crystals control the developing larvae that are hatchingfrom eggs.

Advantixcombines the active ingredient of Advantage to control fleas along with permethrin to repel and kill ticks.

Advocatecombines Advantage with moxidectin so it kills fleas, as well as prevents heartworm, hookworm, roundworm andwhipworm. It also controls lice and ear mites, mange and lice.

Frontlineis available in two forms - Spray and Top Spot. One spray should eliminate fleas for two to three months. You need toapply it properly by thoroughly rubbing it into the animal's coat with a gloved hand.

Top Spot version, is used every month. It kills adult fleas for at least one month plus all flea stages in the pet'ssurroundings, giving even better flea protection. An additional benefit of using Frontline is it kills ticks. The sprayshould give good tick control for three weeks and the Top Spot should control them for two weeks.

Revolutionalso has a multiple action. While it controls adult fleas, it also prevents flea eggs from hatching and kills flea larvae inthe environment. It controls heartworm, ear mites, sarcoptic mange, roundworm and hookworm. Like Advocate,Revolution is aiming to eliminate the need to use separate flea and heartworm preparations each month.

TabletsSentinel SpectrumUsed monthly, Sentinel controls fleas, heartworm and intestinal worms (including tapeworm). Its flea control effectrelies on preventing flea eggs from hatching. However, it will not kill adult fleas directly so another preparation may beneeded until Sentinel has killed all the eggs in your dog’s environment.

Capstar is a tablet flea killer that works very quickly but has no residual action.

Probanis an insecticide tablet given twice per week and is effective against fleas and ticks.

Programis a monthly tablet for dogs that sterilises flea eggs. For best long-term results, use Program all year round and Capstaras needed.

ShampoosPermoxinis a popular rinse that can be used weekly or that you can make into a spray for daily use. It will also control ticks whenused weekly.

Flea shampoos will not usually affect fleas once the pet's coat is dry.

Controlling fleasWith severe flea infestations, controlling the flea eggs and larvae that are in the house and garden is the priority.

A single flea lays hundreds of eggs. The eggs drop from the animal's coat and are thereby spread around theenvironment the animal lives in. They hatch into larvae which progress through a pupal stage to adult fleas.

The eggs and the larvae are sticky and adhere to carpet and the pet's bedding. They will also lodge in cracks andcrevices around the pet's environment.

The first step to controlling fleas is to do a thorough spring clean up. Remove as much dirt and debris from the pet'senvironment as possible. Vacuum the house, paying attention to areas near the skirting boards and under furniture asthis is where the eggs are known to accumulate. Concentrate on any area in which your pet sleeps. Dispose of the dirt fromthe vacuum cleaner into a rubbish bag, add some insecticide spray or flea powder and then place it in the garbage bin.

If you are having a major problem with fleas, try ‘bombing’ the house with flea bombs available from your supermarket. Then follow up with one of the ongoing treatments above.

Kim and Bullet at the State Titles. As Kim tells it...

“Last weekend at the NSW State Obedience Trial in the rain Bullet ( Likabullet UD ) was in UD. On the Saturday night the judge was Mr K Charnock. Only two of us had passed and our score was 193 but onthe count back Bullet and I came 2nd - so I was over the moon with him. Sunday night the weather was better but just before we were about to go into the ring Bullet was jumpingaround. I had a look at his leg that he was waving around and found that he had a bee on him. With that Ipanicked. Everyone told me if Bullet was stung I would know about it. Boy did I get a headache. The Judge was Mr TGriffin and we go through to the stays. Going into the stays there was only two of us that were passing and Iwas winning the ring. Then the other dog sat in the stand for exam so WE WON!!!!. Bullet was a good boy and stayed and won the ring on 192. We got the silver medal over the weekend and thebest thing was Bullet got his Obedience Champion Title on the weekend.”
