F ROM THE P ASTOR : Living Daily in Holiness

"But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit." (2 Corinthians 3:18)

The beauty and the magnificence of an adult butterfly are only matched by the wonder of the transformation process it goes through from being a worm-like caterpillar to a pupa to its majestic adult form. Believers in Jesus Christ are likewise being transformed into the holiness and beauty of the Lord. We are already assured that the Lord Himself will accomplish this at the end:

"For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son." (Romans 8:29).

The Apostle John echoes this when he wrote,

"We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is." (1 John 3:2).

Living Daily in Holiness (continued from page 1) Where most of us struggle is in the daily unpacking of this truth about our salvation. We are still badgered by temptations. We still get am-bushed by our pet sins. We join the Apostle Paul in his frustration,

"It happens so regularly that it’s predictable. The moment I decide to do good, sin is there to trip me up. I truly delight in God’s commands, but it’s pretty obvious that not all of me joins in that delight. Parts of me covertly rebel, and just when I least expect it, they take charge." (Romans 7:21-23, MSG).

So we scream with him,

"Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death?" (Romans 7:24).

If someone hands you a book on "Seven Steps to Holy Living," or "Twenty One Irrefutable Laws of Avoiding Sin," run from him. For the daily walk of holiness is not achieved by following external rules or for-mula. God's answer to Paul's, and our, dilemma of daily deliverance from this body of death is simple and profound, "Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!" (Romans 8:25). And

the way God transforms us is us "beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord." The mirror here refers to the Word of God. The Word of God tells us what Jesus looks like. The more we get to know Jesus through His Word, the more we desire the things He desires--like holiness, obe-dience to the Father, fruitfulness. And hate the things that He hates--like sin, injustice, self-righteousness.

"From glory to glory." Or ever-increasing glory from day to day. This is the beauty of Christ transforming the believer daily. From within. From a worm-like creature to one that conforms to His glorious image. The completion of this process is already assured. What God wants us to re-alize is that we can breathe the same air of holiness now that is the norm in heaven. In Christ. Through Christ. Daily in His Word. Increas-ingly developing a taste for the holy as we taste the joy and goodness of His holiness. And the allure of sin fades away. And we live in joyous victory.
