Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On February 18, 2015, we begin our Forty Days of Lent. This is a time of reflectionand prayer for some and others may donate to charity in the tradition ofalmsgiving. For many though, the tradition of fasting is the chosen means ofhonoring their faith. Though the paths we take through the Lenten season maydiffer, we all embark on the same spiritual journey and we all share in the samegoal; to reaffirm our commitment to Christ and to our fellow man.

In reaffirming these commitments, I am reminded of a passage by the prophetIsaiah, who said that true fasting is, “…sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless: clothing the naked when you seethem, and not turning your back on your own” Is 58:6-7.

We should consider then that fasting is not just a physical act, but a spiritual  one. Itis the emptying of sin in our hearts and of moral weakness in our minds. It is abaptismal renewal achieved through the giving of ourselves to God and to eachother. Only by passing through this emptiness do we become spiritually full again.

When we observe someone who is suffering or in need, we should remember thatthe person we are looking at is not really a stranger. As we all are sown from thesame seed, what we are seeing is ourselves but with a different face. We arewitnessing a manifestation of Christ in another form. So when we see those whoare hungry and homeless, we should not turn our back. We should recognize, asIsaiah wisely states, that these are our own.

In keeping with that wisdom, I ask you to include Catholic Charities of SouthernNevada as part of your Lenten Observance. If you pray, please pray for all thoseCatholic Charities humbly serves. If you fast, please consider donating yourunused food to their food pantry. If you give alms, please remember the AnnualAsh Wednesday Collection and the Faces of Hunger Campaign are wonderfulopportunities to assist in the work of our Church for our brothers and sisters inneed.

This manifestation of God’s love for all people is made possible by your devotionand generosity. Together, we are the hands of Christ serving the most vulnerableamong us. I pray that this Lent, in your own way, you will all serve as shepherds toguide those in need into the Paschal mysteries we celebrate at Easter and God’sdivine light.

    Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Joseph A. Pepe, D.D., J.C.D.Bishop of Las Vegas

    Compendium of the Catechism

    of the Catholic Church

    58. Why does God permit evil?311-314, 324: Faith gives us the certainty that God wouldnot permit evil if he did not cause a good to come fromthat very evil. This was realized in a wondrous way by

God in the death and resurrection of Christ. In fact, fromthe greatest of all moral evils (the murder of his Son) hehas brought forth the greatest of all goods (theglorification of Christ and our redemption).

    59. What did God create?325-327: Sacred Scripture says, “In the beginning, Godcreated the heavens and the earth” (Genesis  1:1). TheChurch in her profession of faith proclaims that God is theCreator of everything, visible and invisible, of all spiritualand corporeal beings, that is, of angels and of the visibleworld and, in a special way, of man.

Compendio del Catecismo de la Iglesia Catolica
