Thank you to all the kind and generous people who have offered moral and practical support since my return from hospital following the hip operation. I could not belong to a more-caring community.

Because I am missing you all, I arranged to break my wrist as well. As it did not mend properly, it will require re-breaking and re-setting in a few weeks time. I was not known as Calamity Jayne for nothing!

Your kindness has meant a lot to me and my Wolfhound, donkeys etc.Thank you. Jayne Cain

The King’s Speech has had a great welcome with so many awards and words of praise; but what a shame there were only half quotations from the 1939 Christmas Message in National Newspapers and some letters in the EDP. In those days, there were many thousands of avid listeners across the world, and possibly hundreds of single-god faiths. May I therefore quote the last words he used as far as I can remember:

I said to the man at the gate of the year:“Give me a light that I may tread into the unknown.”

And he replied:“Put your hand into the hand of God, that shall be to you better than light, and safer than a known way.” MNC

Do you remember when Baconsthorpe got its Water Tower? 1WRBdWe have now received better copies of the pictures for which there was insufficient room in the last edition of the newsletter. Thank you, Arthur, for these and more memories which you share with us on page 15.

Weekday Holy Eucharist You are most welcome to join us every Wednesday morning at 10 am in Matlaske Church for Holy Eucharist.

From the RectoryThe Rectory, Matlaske NR11 7AQ 577455

My dear friendsDon’t give up!

Lent is almost upon us. People often ask ‘What are you giving up for Lent?’ Giving up sweets, chocolates, (cigarettes even!) may give us a slightly self-satisfied glow but I doubt if it does much for us spiritually. So, don’t ‘give up’ but rather ‘take on’ – grow spiritually by giving a little time to think and pray about our Christian life together. This year there will be special Compline services throughout Lent. Come and be refreshed by a good spiritual spring clean – a warm welcome awaits you.

God Bless.

February daily dog walking has been characterised by cloudy and wintry weather with relatively little sunshine, so it has been uplifting to see signs of nature stirring despite this. The snowdrops seem particularly beautiful this year, and we have catkins and pussy willow gracing the trees and hedges by roads. The odd primrose has made an appearance too. The birds have been very busy on the feeders in the garden, and it is hard to keep up with their appetites. We have been delighted by a fleeting visit from a waxwing, and bramblings too are about. Out on the fields, groups of hares have been surprised to find us sharing the paths and have beaten a hasty retreat on seeing the dog!

As we move into March, please remember to keep those feeders full as it is a very hungry time of year for the birds. Food is still at a premium and they are beginning their nest building. A few birds may even try starting an early family this month and will be even more at risk. Although we hope there will be warmer, brighter days, in March we can still be in the grip of winter weather (ed: see the Baconsthorpe page!).

Look out for more returning summer visitors (birds!) and listen for bird song. Help with identification of both bird and song can be found at www.rspb.org.uk as well as from our many knowledgeable friends in the villages. Hedgehogs, frogs and toads become active this month after hibernation. If you are interested in attracting frogs into your garden but haven’t room for a pond, remember an old washing up bowl sunk halfway into the ground in a quiet and shady spot may well turn out to be a bijou residence for one (or more). They will return the favour by eating your slugs! And ‘mad March hares’ will be even more in evidence boxing their way across the fields – a truly delightful sight.

We should begin to see carpets of lesser celandines showing their bright yellow petals to the sun, and I’ll be looking out for big clumps of primroses (a more delicate yellow). Lots of other spring plants will be showing their foliage if not their flowers. There are so very many shades of green in nature. By the end of the month blackthorn may be in flower, the first step to your sloe gin!

If you see anything interesting or unusual or just uplifting, and have access to the internet, how about posting it on the village diary website on the Noticeboard (or get someone else to do it)? It would be great to share these sightings. DWA

Baconsthorpe Quiz – 11 Feb 2011 1dSAX

Our Quiz Evening was a great success with over 40 enjoying a Jacket Potato supper and Quiz. We raised £150 which will help us meet our bills for oil, electricity, rates and repairs to the heating boiler.

Baconsthorpe – Do you remember the snow of March 1958? 1bdIq

Some readers may well recall the severe winters of 1947 and 1963 which affected the whole country whereas the heavy snowfall in 1958 was restricted only to North Norfolk. Norwich, for instance, got no snow at all.

If anyone thinks that we are ‘out of the wood’ snow-wise once March has arrived – think again and take a look at these photographs...

[ 17 ]

The snow arrived at the beginning of that month and all our villages were completely cut off due to the heavy volume of snow that fell in a very short time. The first picture taken at Church Lane Baconsthorpe gives a good indication both of the depth of snow, and the do-it-yourself attitude that existed in those days when the road was dug out by hand by the locals. The second photograph taken at Hempstead between Court Green and the Hare and Hounds shows a Ford Popular that had to give best to the snow.

The writer has one rather amusing recollection from this time when he was persuaded by a friend that between them they could get through to Holt by motor-cycle thereby being the first vehicle of any description to get out of the village for some days. By dint of pulling the machine through snow drifts, lifting it over bank and hedges, and occasionally riding it across fields we eventually made it to Holt some two hours later. It was with some chagrin that our arrival there coincided with a group of villagers who had made the journey on foot having left at the same time as us! Arthur Pentney

The Hempstead Plant and Produce Stall has been having a winter break, but will be back in mid-March. Last year £230 was made, and was shared between the Village Hall, and the Church. Hempstead Village Hall Roof – 18 Aug 2010 sR3G

A Warmer and Greener Village Hall for Hempstead was what was claimed when the case was made to the Big Lottery fund. An experiment has just been made; the time to reach a comfortable temperature was found to be less than half that measured previously. This would seem to be quite satisfactory.

Hempstead Weather Report for 2010 1djbf

Here are the usual rainfall figures for the last few years, measured in millimetres and rounded to the nearest whole number:

Total         Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec mm inches

2007 77 58 37 1 163 155 80 82 60 54 51 49 868 34.12008 70 22 95 56 20 58 49 91 40 73 98 49 721 28.42009 41 54 40 18 38 51 72 16 14 47 89 98 578 22.82010 59 84 44 31 16 51 33 112 76 87 86 34 715 28.1

There is nothing very remarkable about the new figures, but the minimum temperatures associated with them are more interesting. In 2009 we had snow in both January and December, and the same last year. On 18 December 2010 we measured -11.5 C, just below the figure in 1981; the grass thermometer was snowed in. It was more exposed so colder at the two neighbouring stations, one 5 miles east, the other 10 miles SE, but each of them measured near -20 C on the ground. For much of the UK the mean minimum for the month was the lowest for over 100 years.

This was not exceptional, just ‘normally abnormal.’ But why? Above our heads is an age-old battle between two systems: the Atlantic westerlies are wet and windy; Continental air is often drier, but colder in winter and hotter in summer. Hovering above them, like a referee, is the Jetstream; this conduit of high-speed air snakes around the globe, mostly at the level of big planes.

Usually the Jetstream passes to the north of us, but last December it dipped to the south, and provoked those cruel NE winds that gave us such bitterly cold nights. These wanderings are not that uncommon but are difficult to predict. Some of us remember 1946–47 and 1962-63, but no one can go back to the last Frost Fair on the frozen Thames in 1813–14; nor to the one Samuel Pepys described in 1683–84. Had this digression occurred in summer we would have had a big heat-wave, as in 1976. David W Durst

Hempstead Donations 1def9

The Church and the Village Hall have both been given £500. The gift has come at a particularly opportune moment for the church where a minor repair turned into the complete replacement of the vestry roof. Also, it has made it worthwhile for the Hempstead Village Hall Committee to ask this and other donors to giftaid their donations. A big thank you to our anonymous donor.

ex-Hempstead Resident’s 100th Birthday 1eAGa

Some of you will remember Brenda King who lived at ‘Westward Ho’ in the Street and who now lives with her daughter in North Humberside. She has recently celebrated her one hundredth birthday. She did beautiful flower arrangements in the Church and has a passion for bridge.

Matlaske Home Watch 1cFR4In the past week the theft of heating oil has been reported from properties in Matlaske, Briston and Melton Constable. Police are advising householders to consider additional security measures to deter opportunist thieves, including locks, lighting and secure fencing. Garden sheds have also been targets of break-ins.

Hopefully we’ll have those two amazingly talented people back again soon. Profits from our shows are currently going to The Benjamin Foundation and Crossroads Care. Thank you to all who come and share the fun and help these organisations.

Plumstead PC Minutes – 13 Jan 2011 1Y85XMinutes for the meeting are available from Michael Chesterman 861109

Reach for the sky!... 1dIqJThat’s what the Plumstead PC is thinking of doing. How? By erecting a flagpole in a prominent position in the village to commemorate the Royal Wedding. A bold imaginative gesture, so that on special occasions the flag can be unfurled and gladden the hearts of passers-by. A colourful token of civic pride, to offset the gloom of the weather, recession, mud-on-the road etc. There is a generous offer from the Plumstead 2000 Fund to pay for it, and the ‘preferred location’ is on the north side of the stretch of road between the Church and the Village Sign. Comments are invited – please e-mail David Ramsbotham [email protected] or telephone 577418.

... But watch your step! 1dIrhIf you are concerned about the way that heavy trucks and trailers trundle their way through Plumstead, and want to report specific incidents involving farm traffic, help is at hand. One of the Stody Estate Managers, Mike Wilton, attended a recent (15 Dec) Plumstead PC meeting, and kindly offered to be available on 07733 308 198, to provide information if asked on this. Farmers have to do their thing and shift big loads from A to B, but want to co-operate with local residents.

This is a good warming recipe for cold days, and is also cheap and tasty for these austere times! Don't know where the name comes from, but at least the aduki beans are red... and the weights are in ‘old money!’

4 oz dry aduki beans2 oz rice grains1 tablespoon oil1 onion peeled and finely chopped8 oz carrots, diced1–2 tablespoons tamari (soy sauce)2 teaspoons mixed herbs2 tablespoons tomato puree½ pint aduki bean stock from cooking the beans1 lb cooked potatoes, mashed

Set oven at 180 C / 350 F

1. Cook beans and rice together until tender and reserve the stock (you could easily use tinned beans, cooked rice and vegetable stock if you prefer).

2. Fry the onion in the oil; add carrots and cook for 2–3 minutes.

3. Add beans and rice.

4. Mix tamari, tomato puree, herbs and stock and pour over the bean mixture.

5. Simmer 20–30 minutes until the flavours are blended.

6. Season; and add more stock if a bit dry to make a moist mixture.

7. Cover with mashed potato and dot with butter.

8. Cook 35–40 minutes in the oven.
