Kaspersky Small Office Security 2 interface

Kaspersky Small Office Security 2 has a fairly simple and easy-to-use interface.Thissection discusses its basic features in detail.

Notification area icon

Immediately after installing KSOS 2, the application icon appears in the Microsoft Windowstaskbar notification area1

The icon has the following basic purposes:

It is an indicator of the application's operation.

It provides access to the context menu, main application window and the news window.

Indication of the application activity

This icon serves as an indicator of the application's operation. It also indicates the protectionstatus and shows a number of basic functions currently being performed by the application:

scanning an email message;

scanning web traffic;

updating database and application modules;

computer needs to be restarted to apply updates;

a failure occurred in the operation of an application component.

The icon is animated by default: for example, during the email message scan, a tiny letter symbolblinks against the application icon; when the update is in progress, you can see a revolving globe.You can disable the icon animation the following way:

1. Open the main application window.2. In the top right corner click the Settings link.

3. In the Settings window select the General tab and in the menu select Appearance.4. In the right part of the window in the Icon in the taskbar notification area section clear the

When the animation is disabled, the icon can take the following form:

(colored symbol) all or certain protection components are activated;

(black-and-white symbol) all protection components are disabled.

Access to the context menu and application windows

You can use the icon to open the context menu and the main application window. To open the context menu, hover the cursor over the icon and right-click the area. To open the mainapplication window, hover the cursor over the icon and left-click the

area.

If news from Kaspersky Lab is available, the icon appears in the Microsoft Windowstaskbar notification area. Double-click this icon to open News Agent window.Using News Agent, Kaspersky Lab informs you of all important events related to KSOS 2 andprotection against computer threats.Information about the number of unread news items is also displayed in the main applicationwindow.You can read the news in one of the following ways:

Click the icon in the taskbar notification area;

Select News from the context menu of the application icon;

Click the Read news link in the pop-up news message;

Click the News link in the main application window.

The above-listed methods of opening the News Agent window are only operable if any unreadnews are available.

If you do not want to receive news, you can use any of the following methods to disable delivery:

from the News Agent window (only if any unread news are available);

from the application settings window.

To disable news delivery from the News Agent window:1. Open the News Agent window (see instructions above).2. Uncheck the Always receive news box.

To disable news delivery from the application settings window:

1. Open the main application window.2. In the top right corner click the Settings link.3. In the Settings window go to the General tab and select the Appearance subsection.4. In the Icon in the taskbar notification area section, uncheck the Enable news

notifications box.

Context Menu

You can run basic protection tasks from the context menu.

The Kaspersky Small Office Security 2 menu contains the following items:

Update runs the update of application databases and modules.

Full Scan launches the process of full computer scan for checking malicious objects.

Virus Scan launches the process of scan of particular objects for checking malware.

Virtual Keyboard displays a virtual keyboard.

Kaspersky Small Office Security 2 opens the main application window.

Settings opens the application settings window.

About opens a window containing information about the application.

Pause protection/Resume protection temporarily turns off/on the real-time protectioncomponents. This menu item does not affect the applications updates, or the execution ofvirus scans.

Enable/Pause Web Policy Management temporarily turns on/off control of all computerusers.

Block/Unblock network traffic temporarily blocks all computer network communications. Exit close Kaspersky Small Office Security 2 (when this item is selected, the application

is unloaded from the computers RAM).

If a virus scan or update task is running at the moment that you open the context menu, its nameas well as its progress status (percentage complete) is displayed in the context menu. When youselect a menu item with the name of a task, you can switch to the main window with a report ofcurrent task run results. For example:

The main application window contains interface elements that provide access to all the mainfeatures of the application.To open the application man window, perform one of the following actions:1. Hover the mouse over the application icon in the taskbar notification area and left-click it.2

or1. In the lower left corner press Start.2. Choose All programs.3. Choose Kaspersky Small Office Security 2.

As a result, the main window of Kaspersky Small Office Security 2 will open:

The main window can be divided into three parts:1. The top part of the window contains the protection status indicator which informs you of yourcurrent computer protection status:

There are three possible protection status values. Each status value is indicated by a color:

Green indicates that your computers protection is at the correct level;

Yellow and red indicate that there are various security threats.

In addition to malicious programs, threats include obsolete application databases, disabledprotection components, the selection of minimum protection settings etc.

Security threats must be eliminated as they appear.Clicking the indicator icon in the main application window opens the Protection state windowcontaining detailed information about the status of computer protection and troubleshootingsuggestions for the detected problems and threats.

2. The left part of the window allows you to quickly switch to the main application features:enabling and disabling protection components, running virus scan tasks, updating databases andprogram modules, etc.

3. The right part of the window contains information about the application function selected inthe left part, and allows configuration of its settings, provides tools for executing virus scan tasks,retrieving updates etc.

You can also use the following buttons and links:

Settings to open the application settings window.

Quarantine to start working with quarantined objects.

Reports switch to the application operation report.

News switch to viewing news in the News Agent window. This link is displayed after theapplication receives a piece of news.

My Kaspersky Account to enter the user's personal account on the Technical Support

Service website. Support to open the window containing information about the system and links to

Kaspersky Lab information resources (Technical Support Service website, forum).

License Kaspersky Small Office Security 2 activation, license renewal.You can change the appearance of Kaspersky Small Office Security 2 using alternate skins. Tochange the skin, please do the following:

1. Open the application main window.2. In the top right corner of the window click the Settings link.3. In the Settings window go to the General tab.4. In the left part of the window select the Appearance subsection

Enter the path to the folder with skin parameters into the empty field.or

Press Browse.

Notification windows and popup messages

Kaspersky Small Office Security 2 notifies you of important events occurring during its operation,using notification windows and pop-up messages that appear over the application icon in thetaskbar notification area.

Notification windows are displayed by Kaspersky Small Office Security 2 when various actionscan be taken in connection with an event: for example, if a malicious object is detected, you canblock access to it, delete, or try to disinfect it. The application offers you to select one of theavailable actions. A notification window only disappears from the screen if you select one of theactions:

Pop-up messages are displayed by Kaspersky Small Office Security 2 in order to inform you ofevents that do not require selection of an action. Some pop-up messages contain links that youcan use to take an action offered by the application (for example, run the update of the databases,or initiate the activation of the application). Pop-up messages automatically disappear from thescreen soon after they appear:

Depending on how critical the event is for computer security, you might receive the following typesof notification:

Critical notifications inform you of events of critical importance from the viewpoint ofcomputer security: for example, detection of a malicious object or dangerous activity in thesystem. Notification windows and pop-up messages of this type are red-colored.

Important notifications inform you of events which are potentially important from theviewpoint of computer security: for example, detection of a potentially infected object orsuspicious activity in the system. Notification windows and pop-up messages of this typeare yellow-colored.

Information notifications inform you of events that are non-critical from the viewpoint of

security. Notification windows and pop-up messages of this type are green-colored.

Application settings windowThe Kaspersky Small Office Security 2 settings window is designed for configuring the entireapplication, separate protection components, scan and update tasks, and for running otheradvanced configuration tasks.To open the settings window, please do the following:

Click the Settings link in the top part of the main application window or select the Settingsitem in the application context menu.

or

Hover the mouse over the application icon in the taskbar notification area and right-click it.

In the context menu choose Settings.

As a result the Settings window will open:

The settings window consists of three parts:

in the top left part of the window you can choose the section that should be configured:

in the left part of the window you can choose the application component, task or another itemthat should be configured;
