Dear Readers,

Like all lasting affairs, it takes patience and communication to know what makes your hair tick. Particularly this month, with its romantic themes, you and your hair need to work as a team. Whether it’s a first date, a laidback lunch with your long-time love or dinner with your spouse, getting your hair right will determine if your look trumps or slumps. There really is no confidence booster like a good hair day. Our Blow it Away article on page 56 will simplify the basics of blow-drying for you while the Valentine Do It

Yourself feature and Cover Story on pages 36 and 41 respectively, will help you be Valentine-ready any day, any time.

I read about an excavation in Egypt a few years ago. They unearthed the queen’s remains; with her jewels and priceless objets d’ art. Her frame was all but dust, all that stayed intact was a mane of coppery, red hair; so glossy and silky as if her handmaiden had just brushed it moments ago. That is the defining quality of hair; it outlives and outdoes everything else. Silky, healthy hair styled well, will let you hold your head higher and walk with confidence. Former Miss India Sarah Jane Dias agrees with us and shares her hair philosophy on page 53. Complement your perfect hairstyle with the three must-have make-up looks in our Make-My-Valentine feature on page 99. If your skin needs a glowing boost, our experiential feature on page 102 on the BioSurface Peel may help you, as will our Raving Reviews of the month’s best beauty buys on page 76. For men, we have an exciting feature on Valentine styling on page 47, a guide to corporate grooming on page 115 and a must-read skincare feature on page 104 to help you nail every impression you make.

And you know you can count on our regular features to dish the latest and best when it comes to news, events, reviews and monthly forecasts!

Happy reading; remember forget to follow us on Twitter @HAIRMagIndia and on Facebook: HAIR and Beauty Magazine, for round-the-clock updates!

January 2015 75

Luxuriouslyyours It’s time to bid adieu to our habits of 2014 and enter the New Year with lustrous, strong hair by providing them with an exclusive and luxurious hair spa treatment says TANVI DESHMUKH

With ever-increasing levels of dust, pollution and stress, it is needless to say that our hair requires special conditioning and pampering to keep it silky and blooming i.e. it needs a hair spa.

haircare

A deep conditioning treatment that is directed towards the roots of your hair, hair spa is a series of treatments that is designed to provide intense

nourishment and care. A hair spa typically solves problems related to hair loss, hair damage, dry hair, split ends, etc.—every problem treated uniquely, as each one calls for a different kind of treatment to rejuvenate your hair from within.

WHAT MAKES FOR A GREAT HAIR SPA?A typical hair spa comprises four key steps—an oil massage of the scalp, shampooing, a nourishing hair mask and finally, deep conditioning. The treatment starts with a soothing oil massage for at least 5-10 minutes that helps in eliminating impurities from the pores and treats your roots to strengthen your hair. After the massage, your hair is shampooed to address your core problem of dandruff, hair fall or hair damage. The hair mask is then applied to every strand to help revive its texture and lost moisture, enhancing the overall condition of your hair.

WHY YOU NEED IT?With ever-increasing levels of dust, pollution and stress, it is needless to say that our hair requires special conditioning and pampering to keep it silky and blooming. Here are a few reasons why a lady with a lovely mane needs a hair spa at regular intervals: - The oil massage relaxes your

hair, thus improving blood circulation and hair growth, resulting in healthy and nourished hair.

- The massage enriches the scalp while adding moisture and closing the cuticles.

- The spa treatment also protects your hair from heat every time you step out as the hair masks

comprise UV filters.- The shampoo massage helps

you get rid of problems relating to hair loss, dryness, split ends and hair damage.

- The shampoo also helps to treat problems like dryness and damage that may be caused due to exposure to harsh chemicals while hair straightening, rebonding, smoothening, colouring, etc.

- The conditioner also helps to add volume and bounce to your hair when it looks thin and damaged.

- Hair spas are also designed for normalising oil secretions to cater to the requirements of oily or dry scalp.

MEET THE EXPERT: NATASHA NASTA Natasha comes armed with tremendous experience and has worked with various movie and TV celebrities. A Senior Hairstylist at Warren Tricomi, Natasha is not just competent when it comes to hairstyles and cuts, but also in the make-up department.

makeovers

Who?Michelle D’costa 16, Student

The reason...“I wanted to shake things up a little, don on a colourful personality.”

Casual eleganceNatasha opts for a softly curled pony for Michelle’s evening look. Her hair is lightly tousled section-wise, to add a certain amount of bounce and volume to it. The curls are then pinned to the side for a high-low pony that has an elegantly tousled texture. The coral lips set off this look brilliantly!

Corporate glamFor Michelle, with college presentations being of high priority, we go for a look that can be easily carried forward to a boardroom. Michelle’s hair is first blow-dried to give it a smooth, well-finished appearance. Natasha then creates a small pouf that lets the side fringe frame her face beautifully. This means that focus is drawn upon her luscious red locks that fall sleek and smooth down her shoulders. Simple, stylish and quick!

Make-upThe day look focuses on keeping it subtle and stylish for a perky, corporate feel. The eyes have been lined precisely to bring out their natural colour, teamed with pretty pink, glossy lips.

RESTYLE ME joins hands with Warren Tricomi Salon, Cadell Road, to give two readers refreshing new looks for the New Year.

Michelle’s fiery, lightly tousled tresses are just right for a relaxed evening do.

Dressing up does not exclude your hair. SHEFALI SAMDRIA presents quirky hairstyle ideas shared by Mark Hampton to make ’em all fall in love with your hair.

Its twists and curls may look pro-level complicated, but this intricate updo is surprisingly simple to create. This style puts a formal spin on the basic bun without compromising its simple elegance. Hair is swept completely away from the face, so it’s perfect for an outdoor occasion.

Mark Hampton’s Hair Tip: Secure every one of the small hair elements with tiny bobby pins and then drape the next element over the bobby pin. This is a nifty way of hiding the pins. Finish this off with a spray of a casual sea salt texturising spray.

Accessorise: Natural flowers like spray roses, tulips, daisies, carnations and alstroemerias.

THE TWISTED UPDO

When you are up for experimenting with your wardrobe this month, why should your hair be left behind? Mark Hampton – Global hair ambassador for TONI&GUY HairMeetWardrobe, gives us a few tips on styling your look to perfection and adding a bit of bling for that showstopping look!

hair inspiration

This fresh, easy style is as modern as it is timeless: low-swept curls recall a classic chignon, while an asymmetrical silhouette lends a flirty vibe. “It’s young and coquettish and the sleek and well- organised looking chignon is the ideal hairstyle for festive events of any kind.”

Mark Hampton’s Hair Tip: This chignon is low at the neckline and is beautiful if your hair is coloured with a rich red lustre. A moisturising shine spray will add that glitz to add even more glamour and interest to the look.

Accessorise: The silver barrette.

THE FAUX BOB

THE SLEEK CHIGNON – BOWS

First spotted on the catwalks, faux bobs are in vogue everywhere. Women with long hair, especially, love this look, as it allows them to create the illusion of cutting their hair without actually going for the chop. The faux bob works with long hair that is tied at the base of the neck. The hair is tied very discreetly and folded up onto itself to create the classic bob-shape.

Mark Hampton’s Hair Tip: If your hair is long enough, you can also create a faux bob by first gathering your hair in a ponytail and then sliding the scrunchy down to the hair ends. Apply a dab of Glamour serum drops by TONI&GUY HairMeetWardrobe to help you fold the hair inward and secure the ponytail end with hidden bobby pins.

Accessorise: The 1920s-inspired Wavelength Rhinestone Headband.

CHANGING YOUR HAIR COLOUR IS ALL GOOD UNTIL IT GOES WRONG—AND THEN YOU SEEM TO FACE A MINEFIELD OF PROBLEMS! WHAT ARE THE TOP COLOUR COMPLAINTS? Over-colouring at home is a problem as it creates a build-up of colour, meaning the hair has gone too dark. Other complaints arise from not being consistent with a hairdresser, leading to a mix of colours building up in the tresses, or the client can be unhappy that their colour is plain or boring—which is so simple to rectify.

A CLIENT COLOUR MISMATCH CAN REALLY KNOCK SELF-CONFIDENCE, SO IT’S NO WONDER THAT SPEED IS AT THE TOP OF OUR PRIORITY LIST. WHAT STEPS CAN WE TAKE TO GET OUT OF OUR DYEING DILEMMA? If a client is unhappy, we will always go out of our way to do our best to rectify the issue. Nine out of ten times it will simply be a toner issue. Firstly, I would suggest something like the brighter lights option on the Lisa Shepherd Colour Bar menu. This can create a sprinkling of glitter effect on the hair, which is a soft and natural way to bring any colour to life. I also love the ‘micro lights’ method, which is a simple freehand technique using colour on the hair to create natural shine/tone lines.

WHAT IF A CLIENT HAS COLOURED THEIR HAIR AT HOME AND IS UNHAPPY WITH THE RESULT? IS THERE ANYTHING THEY CAN DO TO RECTIFY THE SITUATION?I occasionally take phone calls from people who have had Feat

Good dye gone badIt takes knowledge and care to get the colour you crave and who better to ask for advice than precision colour artist Lisa Shepherd, who is not only the MD of award-winning Lisa Shepherd salons, but was also the first colourist to win the British Hairdresser of the Year! Get over your colour mishaps in style (and safe hands) with our guide to colour correction…

colour disasters at home and are calling to ask us for help, as we are a colour specialist salon. I will always do my best to give them a consultation over the phone, but as you can imagine, this is very hard without seeing the hair. I think the most important thing is for the person to refrain from putting any more dye or peroxide on their hair, as this could increase the damage and make it harder for us to remove.

MANY READERS ASSOCIATE COLOUR CORRECTION WITH SIMPLY RECTIFYING PROBLEMS. CAN YOU THINK OF ANOTHER SITUATION WHERE A CLIENT MIGHT NEED A COLOUR REMOVAL SERVICE?Colour removals are not always used to correct problems or issues. Firstly, if a colour has built-up over a number of years and the client is feeling that their hair is gradually getting darker, we can remove the depth and take them back to their original hue. A popular time that many women want to start removing their colour is when they are beginning to go grey and want it to come through in a more natural and softer way than just a harsh root! We then have to start the removal of the deep colours, if any, as part of the process to disguise the white hair coming through.

HOW IMPORTANT IS IT THAT BIG COLOUR CHANGES ARE MADE IN-SALON?Whether you’re going from light to dark or brown to blonde, there are always a number of things that could potentially go wrong. As hairdressers, we know that we have to build a base to any colour when correcting. The use of reds, for example, can create warmth while semi-colours create shine. This also applies for clients who are looking to go from dark to light—they need to remember that this can’t just happen by buying a blonde colour box from a shop. The dark colour needs to be removed, and this removal process can throw out lots of unwanted tones which would need in-salon colours to correct, whilst at the same time keeping in mind the condition, feel and quality of the hair.

HOW CAN CLIENTS ENSURE THAT THEY ARE MORE LIKELY TO LEAVE THE SALON WITH A COLOUR THEY LOVE?Consultation, consultation, consultation! These are usually free of charge and you can get to know your stylist and make sure you are comfortable with them! Explain in as much detail as you can the history of your hair and your target shade. Sometimes, pictures are a great way of explaining a colour, too. I am always very honest with people in my consultations. For example, if someone has black hair and has been dyeing it for eight years but now wants to go for a pastel pink colour, this isn’t going to happen straightaway—it’s a working process. I always build a plan with my clients, whether this lasts for three or six months; I feel that at least by being honest, my client will know what to expect from their first colour visit and leave the salon happy in the knowledge that what we have achieved is what we had previously discussed and what they expected.

QDR. APOORVA SHAH and DR. SONAL SHAH, India’s first certified trichologists, give you all the haircare advice you need.

QDoes wearing extensions lead to excessive hair loss or is it just a

myth? What can I do to prevent this if I do get them?~ Shanaya

A Hair extensions are used to give you dense, bouncy hair. It is attached to your existing hair with the help of clips, which won’t lead to hair loss. However, if this is not done properly, it may lead to hair breakage.

QEven though I go for a trim every three months, my hair just doesn’t

grow in the right shape and is of irregular length throughout! What can be the reason for this and what can I do to make my hair grow normally?~ Swapna

A Hair growth depends on what we eat. Poor nutrition, unhygienic conditions of the scalp and lack of oiling can be few of the reasons for lack of hair growth. Get timely attention from your trichologist to know whether you require any supplements or not.

QI have had limp hair all my life. No matter what shampoo

or conditioner I use, there is no change in the appearance and texture of my hair. Could you suggest some kind of treatment for it? Also, what styles will help hide the limpness?~ Sankesha

A Make use of hair extensions that will lend the volume and density your hair needs for a fuller appearance. Use a hair wrapping conditioner thrice a week to improve your hair’s texture.

QI have just turned 25 years old and I am ashamed that I already

have white hair. I know salt-and-pepper hair can be really hot, but I want my jet black hair back! What do I do? Please help!~ Ramona

A Include iron-rich food like dates and figs in your diet on a daily basis. Start drinking water which is stored in a copper vessel. Have milk and milk products and a protein-rich diet to give proper nourishment to your hair. Consult your trichologist to know the reason for premature greying of hair and take the supplements to further stop the greying.

Do It Yourself this Valentine!SHEFALI SAMDRIA presents three easy looks by SP Master Alchemist Swati Gupta to try this month for every occasion and time of the day!

Systems Professionals Master Alchemist Swati Gupta is the best ambassador for her brand and salon. Her mane of cascading,

shiny hair that is naturally straight and silky can make any girl jealous! In our previous issue Swati shared her philosophy of keeping it simple where hair was concerned. This time however, SP invited us to watch as Swati created and demonstrated three DIY hairstyles that our readers can create easily with minimum tools and products.

So, be it the look for a casual brunch, romantic night-out or the formal office look, I find these looks a must-try this month!

Steps: 1. Part your hair side-ways or centre.2. Take a small segment of hair from the hairline, twist and twirl it inwards.3. Holding the previous segment, take some more hair and twirling it,

combine the two segments.4. Repeat this with all the hair segments on the side of the part near the

hairline until you reach the back of your head5. Secure the combined segment of all these individual twirls using a pin at

the nape of the neck.6. Repeat the same process with the other side of the part and secure with

a pin at the nape creating a Halo band. You may also create a braid using one twirl section and bringing it together in the Halo Band.

7. Secure this Halo band tightly using pins or create a loose, messy braid.8. You can keep your hair back or bring it to one side to create drama.9. Spray System Professional Perfect Hold generously to keep this intricate

style in place.10. Finish with a dab of LuxeOil wherever you see flyaways or baby hair

peeking out and run LuxeOil down the length to smoothen it out.

This is a look designed to transform you into a princess straight out of Grimm’s tales while being deceptively simple. Rely on your fingers to create romance this month!

self made

Steps: 1. Take a few drops of LuxeOil and

spread through the lengths of your hair to act as a heat protectant.

2. Take a section of your hair at the front and spray the System Professional Perfect Hold so it will hold the style.

3. Set the temperature of the iron at 170-180 degrees and clamp it down the lengths, section by section.

If you don’t have a three-pronged iron or can’t locate it, you can try this alternate approach.1. Divide your hair into vertical

sections after following the prep steps above.

2. Make a three-section braid using each section you have created and try to keep them of the same length as far as possible.

3. Use a normal straightening iron and regulate the temperature between 170-180 degrees.

4. Clamp the iron on the braid at 3/4th length and hold it for three to five seconds. Glide it down the lengths, holding it for the same time duration.

5. Repeat across the sections.6. Let your hair cool. You may leave

the braids on for upto an hour to rein in the waves, depending on your hair texture.

7. Finish with System Professional Perfect Hold spray to hold the style.

This look can back up power-dressing at your workplace. Simple and stylish, it transitions from day to night with simple accessories and touch-ups for that special date!

Tools: A tailcomb, black pins, a black elastic hair band, an accessory to take the look from day to night.

Products: System Professional LuxeOil

Steps: 1. Prep your hair with SP

LuxeOil to tame frizz and flyaways.

2. With your tail comb take a horseshoe section at the crown of your head. This is done by creating a part on one side at the beginning of the hairline at the temple, all the way around the head to the same spot on the other side of the head.

3. Using the tail comb, take a horizontal section within this horseshoe section and place the comb about halfway between your hair’s roots and your hand, and apply firm brush strokes downward toward the scalp. Repeat this motion until there is a cushion of hair at the base of the hair section.

4. Secure your bouffant using several bobby pins to keep it firmly in place.

5. The hair at front may look rough and messy; in that case, run the comb gently at the front while holding the section in the other hand to create a perfectly coiffed bouffant.

6. You may also use the System Professional Perfect Hold spray on the bouffant to give it hold.

7. Pull the rest of your hair with a comb or brush section-wise, bringing it up near the base of the bouffant for a high pony.

8. Secure the ponytail using an elastic rubber band and using your hands, secure it firmly against the head.

9. To finish the look, dab a little LuxeOil down the length of the ponytail.

10. To transition this look for the night you may add a girly accessory like a pearl hair brooch or segments.

hair keratin providing lightweight, long lasting

“When one thinks of Valentine’s Day, one thinks of soft textures, curls, classic buns with subdued shades of reds and browns. Soft braids, either in entirety or partial, must also have lots of loosened bits. Finger waves or very soft curls would fit right in, although not sprayed. Broadly, whether an up-do or hair left loose, the hairstyle should have a fly-away effect and the end result must be soft!”

PRINCE OF HEARTS! Give your wardrobe a sweet and sexy makeover with looks that are sure to bowl your partner over!

Text by Namrata D’souza

Black, sexy and irresistible, leather jackets have been a favourite among men for ages. This season, let leather meet colour as you sport jackets in colours such as steel grey and reddish brown; or even teal, for the more adventurous kinds. Zipped up to protect yourself from the waning chill of February or left loose and open to billow ever so slightly—that makes for a chic look—this month, cover up in style.

COMPLEMENT IT: Add the enticing ‘bad boy’ charm to your colourful

biker boy image with a side fringe hairstyle and a

short and shaggy beard. “This look would work

best for an evening date. Ensure that you allow

your fringe to grow till a proper length so that it

can be swept behind the ears,” says Mr. Krishna

Gupta, Managing Director, Lloyds Luxuries Ltd

(Truefitt & Hill).

fashion forward

Whoever said prints are just for the ladies? Give your regular white, beige and cream shirts/jackets a twist, with unconventional prints that are a runway rage this season. From Alexander McQueen who used block-colour swirls over suiting to the elaborate mosaic tile prints seen at Hardy Amies, printed shirts, jackets or trousers will definitely help you score brownie points. Afraid of losing your ruggedness? Keep the colours toned down so that your prints stand out bold and beautiful.

COMPLEMENT IT: Match the shock of the prints on display with an

undercut hair and full beard for that masculine feel.

Gupta says, “For this look, one should ensure that

the length of the hair and beard should be the same.

The beard should be well-trimmed or else it would

give a shabby look overall. The mop of hair on top

should be separated by a clean line and styled from

front to back.”

If the trend set during the Golden Globes 2015 awards is anything to go by, then a sure fire way to spruce up your classy dinner date attire is by plugging in the bow tie. From Jared Leto, Matthew McConaughey and George Clooney, the skinny tie has been ditched this season in favour of the stylish bow tie. Sequinned, plain or velvety in classic black and red or other colours—bow-tie your way into your partner’s heart this Valentine’s.

COMPLEMENT IT: Short, slick hair and a well-trimmed stubble or beard

Have there been times when you wish you had just that perfect mess of blonde locks—shining ever so brightly in the day as well as night, just right to carry off any haircut and style? What is stopping you from taking this golden

plunge, then? Blonde hair isn’t just meant for fair-skinned, blue-eyed people; take one look at the glamorous Beyoncé Knowles and you know you can squash that myth in a jiffy. All you need to know is what shade of blonde suits your skin tone and help is at hand here.

The basic thumb rule when it comes to colouring your hair is: do not go more than two levels or shades, above or below your natural hair colour. Also, with Indian skin tones ranging from medium to dark, a golden, beige-blonde or light blonde is what suits medium skin tone people. Tip of the month: more the colour carried by your skin, more colour you can add to your hair! Those with a darker skin tone should simply stick to darker shades of blonde like caramel. Golden highlights work perfectly fine as well!

Now that you know the shade that will suit you, all you need to do is choose the right product, and Berina’s Hair Bleacher is just the thing for you. One of the most innovative hair colouring products from Berina Cosmetics, Berina Hair Bleacher uses an advanced highlighting technique that lightens hair significantly with brilliant, natural-looking results and a visibly glossy shine.

‘Tis the season to take a dare and let your tresses shine bold, blonde and beautiful!

A bad hair day can ruin a perfect date, or even a perfect first meeting! TIGI brings you their simple tricks to banish those pesky deal-breakers in a jiffy!

Text by Shefali Samdria

Unnecessary volume is best banished with smoothening serums. Use a heat protector and iron your hair out to cut the volume. Try accessories like hair bands and bandanas as well as hairstyles like messy buns with bouffants to make your hair type work for you.

Must-haves: Bed Head Epic Volume Shampoo and Conditioner and Bed Head Small Talk (Thickifier, Energizer & Stylizer)

Must-haves: S-Factor Dream Drops Serum and S-Factor Flat Iron Shine Spray

The make-up could be perfect, the dress bespoke and the shoes stylish; but a bad hair day can make everything fall flat. Every girl’s worst nightmare, bad

hair days always have the worst timing! Whether you’ve got the frizzies, fine hair, dry hair, or just haven’t had a chance to wash your hair—when your crowning glory is misbehaving, you feel like the world is coming crashing down!

Valentine’s Day is a special occasion and to help you do away with your hair woes, TIGI gives you five quick fixes.

Volume is the key here. Fine hair that ends up flat is a double jeopardy that can kill any look. To fix this, use a volumising shampoo and conditioner that will give your hair more body. recommends teasing your hair at the roots and opting for waves that will give you better volume. A soft pixie-cut goes a long way in adding thickness too!

Available at all high-end salons in India such as Hakim’s Aalim and Juice.

This common hair issue is best dealt with a combination of right products and styling. The best antidote for this common hair condition is an anti-frizz serum, followed by leave-in conditioners and humidity protection products. Braids, side buns and ballerina buns work equally well for frizzy hair. Avoid over-brushing and blow-dry at medium heat to minimise the frizz.

Must-haves: Bed Head Control Freak Serum, Bed Head After Party cream and Bed Head Ego Boost Leave-in Conditioner

Excessive product use leads to residual deposits on the hair and scalp that can make hair dull, flat and unresponsive to styling. The best way to deal with excessive hairstyling products is to use a dry shampoo to clear the residue. This will add volume and also keep your hairstyle intact for a longer time. After using a dry shampoo, consider wearing your hair in a messy bun or braid. You could also go for a sleek or gelled-back look.

Must-haves: Bed Head Rockaholic Dirty Secret Dry Shampoo

Dry hair, greasy roots, nothing can be more problematic. Using a deep cleansing shampoo once a week works to alleviate this problem, as does using a dry shampoo to remove excess oil at times. The best styling products to follow the shampoo are matte, texturising ones, as gel and wax can increase the greasiness.

Must-haves: Bed Head Recharge Shampoo and Conditioner, Bed Head Sugar Dust (Volumizer), Bed Head Hard To Get Paste

Sky is the limit

It is rare to meet a woman as grounded and simple as Sarah Jane Dias. When I walked into the coffee shop, I thought she was late until I caught sight of her in a corner, dressed in a flowing

monochrome maxi, white sneakers and black spectacles. Courteous yet opinionated, her thoughts flow with ease and honesty; she is a self-made woman without a godfather in Bollywood and she is here to stay.

Q Did you always plan on being a part of the glamour industry?

A I was studying Sociology before joining the industry. I always loved to perform and dreamt of being a performer in some way. Everything else has worked out from there and I know now what I love to do as a performer. No one in my family is in this industry so it has been trial and error.

QWhile everyone knows about your journey as a former Miss

India, not much is known about your background. A I was born in Mumbai but grew up in the Middle East. I moved back to Mumbai to pursue college education and started off as an MTV VJ after graduation. I quit VJ-ing to participate in Miss India. And it flowed from there.

She is multi-talented, funny, focused and an aspiring Yogi. SHEFALI SAMDRIA has a candid conversation with Sarah Jane Dias about food, yoga and going for your dreams.

QAny experience from the Miss India competition that still stands out after all this time?

A Pageants make you tough as nails. While it’s a wonderful place to meet new people, it’s a very judgmental and competitive place to be in. If you don’t develop a thick skin you get chewed up! It helped me stand tall and recognise my strength. I was actually voted the most unfit contestant that year and today I am one of the Kingfisher Calendar girls!

QSince you’ve turned your fitness around, please share what your fitness routine is like?

A I like to try and do different things in terms of a workout. From swimming to cycling, Ashtanga Yoga to kick-boxing, I love being active.

QFrom VJ-ing to modelling to Bollywood has it been a focused transition? Is Bollywood where you plan

to be? A I don’t believe you can plan a career in Bollywood, or even in the glamour industry. I chase dreams not money. That’s how I live and choose my projects, I have never had a plan.

Q Growing up, were you focused about your beauty or hair care routine before joining the industry?

How different is your routine now? A I followed the basics, like using a sun block and moisturiser, that is something all girls should do. I love oil massages since I was child and always drank a lot of water. The most important thing is to cleanse your skin and hair thoroughly after a shoot and I try to keep it organic.

Pageants make you tough as nails. While it’s a wonderful place to meet new people, it’s a very judgemental and competitive place to be in

Q Which are your favourite hair products?

A I love the Kérastase range and B-Blunt products, particularly their Anti-Frizz cream. I swear by the Elnett hairspray, it has styled my hair without damage for years. I like the Inoa range for gentle, ammonia-free colour.

QWhich are your favourite beauty products?

A All Clarins products, particularly the eye make-up remover and their sun blocks are amazing. I use a lot of organic, cold-pressed avocado, olive and coconut oils on my face because I have dry skin. I mix the oils with milk and honey to make a night pack. My skin loves oil! In make-up, I love the Lakme range, Bobbi Brown and Benefit. I love Benefit’s blush and bronzer, the Bobbi Brown brick and Lakme gel liner in teal. I have gone through bottles of the Lakme liquid liner since I was a child!

Q Do you have a life passion apart from your career?

A I started learning Ashtanga Yoga five years ago and I am passionate about it. It gives me peace and grounding and I am planning to train as a teacher soon. I also love to cook, travel and music is a real passion. I am, in fact, releasing my first music album this month. Its mostly Soul music and I am launching it independently on YouTube. I am the singer, song writer, producer and video director!

Q Which is your favourite cuisine?

A I love cooking hearty, wholesome meals and breakfast is a favourite across cuisines.

Q Five items you always carry in your bag?

A Lip balm, hand sanitiser, green tea bags, Benefit blush, L’Oréal Mascara.

Q Tell us about your experience of shooting for the Kingfisher

calendar. A I fell in love with Turkey, our shoot locations are breathtaking as you will see. Atul Kasbekar is very intelligent and knows just how to make a woman look beautiful. Vidyut and Nupur who were part of make-up and hair, were amazing to work with. The other models were a pleasure to work with and it was a joy ride, the whole experience…

Q Which is your favourite shot of yourself from the calendar?

A There is a tight close-up shot of me in intricate braids and I love braids so.

Q What is the biggest lesson you have learnt about hair care and beauty during work?

A Never work with a hairstylist you don’t know. The last time I took that risk he burnt my hair! Also, never go to sleep with make-up on.

Q How would you describe your beauty philosophy?

A My advice is to be yourself, whether you have dark circles or any other imperfection. Work with what you have been given, bad hair has more to do with nutrition and well-being than your hair routine. De-stressing and nutrition work wonders for skin and hair. I don’t believe in plastic surgery and pills. Be yourself and the world will see your beauty!

down to basics

A simple blow-dry at home, if done in the right manner, can get you salon-worthy hair without burning a hole in your pocket.

The hairstyling guideHere’s your step-by-step guide to nail that perfect blow-dry all by yourself:

What you will need: A towel, a blow-dryer with a nozzle, styling products (which will depend on the quality of your hair and on the kind of look you want to create), conditioner, protective serum, round brushes and hair clips.

How will you do it: STEP 1: TOWEL-DRY YOUR HAIRMake sure you blot the hair and do not rub it, as the main purpose of towel-drying hair is to only get rid of the excess moisture.

STEP 2: APPLYING A HAIR STYLING PRODUCTIt is very important that you choose this product wisely, depending on the quality of your hair. After towel-drying your hair, apply a leave-in conditioner or a shine serum, starting from the lower end of each hair strand going up till the hair shaft. Comb your hair once you are done applying the product.

STEP 3: BLOW-DRYING YOUR BANGS OR FRINGESThe wetter your bangs the easier it will be for you to blow it out. Also, blow-drying your bangs or fringes first with the nozzle on will help you get better control for parting your hair.

STEP 4: DIVIDING HAIR INTO PARTSOnce you’ve blown out your bangs, you can move to the rest of your hair. Divide your hair into equal parts—it is suggested that you separate two sections of your hair at the back and tie them into buns. Repeat the same for the front portion. Do not forget to leave one portion to start with.

Page 52: 02 HAIR - FEB 2015

STEP 5: START BLOW-DRYING YOUR HAIR FROM THE ROOTSFinally, put the nozzle on and start blow-drying your hair from the roots. The correct technique is to pull your hair out and hold it while you blow air over it. Stretching your hair will help smoothen it. Make sure you dry your hair from the roots till the end or it may become frizzy from within.

STEP 6: USING THE ROUND BRUSHNow that you’ve dried your hair from the roots, it’s time to use the round brush. Simply hold your hair from the roots and turn it around while shooting it with the air on the outer side. Move the brush along with your dryer. This is supposed to keep your hair frizz-free.

STEP 7: BLAST DRYFinally, flip your hair in front so that it falls over your face; this is done in order to dry the hidden, heavy hair on the backside. Switch on the cool button on your dryer that blast dries your hair completely, giving them a voluminous feel.

STEP 8: APPLYING A STYLING PRODUCT OR SERUMApply a hairstyling product or serum to lend a lasting blow-dried effect to your hair.

Style ’em up!Now that you know how to style your hair like a pro at home, let the hairstylist in you make you look your best in this month of love. Here are three flattering hairstyles to flaunt this Valentine’s:

Lazy WavesWavy hair is the most manageable and one that suits almost everyone. To get those lazy waves, follow the above procedure until step number four. In order to make it look naturally wavy, compress your hair by squeezing it up loosely. Tamp the end towards the roots to let your waves flow. Simply dry the ends of your hair with a diffuser followed by application of serum. For a fluffy look, leave some moisture in the hair to let it dry off by itself.

Simply StraightThis is one hairstyle that works for the red-carpet as well as for a casual dinner date. Sleek hair looks sexy and is the easiest style to go for while blow-drying hair at home. Follow the above steps and then use a flat iron/straightener to get yourself the most glamorous, silky hair.

Curly & Girly! If you’ve been crazy for curls and wondering if you can do it at home, here’s how. Follow the above procedure until step number four. Once you’ve separated your hair, flip it upside down, attach the diffuser to your blow-dryer and set it at a warm temperature. Start drying your hair by holding the diffuser pointed up. Now, flip your hair back and let a handful of curls fall in the diffuser bowl. While drying, let the diffuser reach your roots in order to dry your hair entirely. Repeat the same with each portion of your hair and then apply a serum to let it flow. Curls need no maintenance and hence the lesser you play with your curls, the longer they live.

Hair andEat your way to better hair with our must-

have mane guide…

Top tip: “For long, luscious locks, you need a diet packed with the right types of proteins. I would suggest taking a good look at your diet and increasing the amounts of red meat, eggs and oily fish on the menu.” – Iain Sallis

How does the hair behave if a high fat, high sugar diet is followed?“The human body is a very complex machine. Your body has very specific nutritional requirements. Eating refined foods and over-processed foods can also result in lack of nutrients or reduced minerals and vitamins being absorbed into the body. A well-balanced diet including plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables is always best. Hair and scalp problems can arise from either a deficiency or an excess of nutrients in your diet, and in some cases, nutrition alone can be the cause of hair loss,” says Creative Director of Russell Eaton salons, Robert Eaton. If your diet is unbalanced, your scalp and the sebaceous glands that surround each follicle may produce excessive oils and sebum, which can coat the hair and make it look lank and greasy. Alongside dirt and pollution, this can lead to infections on the scalp and even alter hormone production. An exfoliating shampoo can help, but the best solution is to moderate your sugar and fat intake.

your dietCan diet affect conditions like hair loss and thinning?Diet is a very important factor as it nurtures all areas of your body, including the blood vessels around the hair follicles. Very often people forget about their scalps, when it’s actually this sensitive area that helps to feed, nourish and ultimately grow hair. “If your diet is lacking in any vitamins or minerals, then the skin and hair growth process can be stunted, and in some cases cause problems with hair loss. Avoid crash diets, as these can quickly starve the body of nutrients and cause your hair to shed. In some cases, this doesn’t show until around three months after the diet, which sometimes means people do not associate this hair loss with lack of nutrients,” adds Robert Eaton. “Obesity can also cause the female hormone (oestrogen) to be less effective in women. Oestrogen naturally binds to fat, so there is less of it to act as a buffer to the testosterone, which in turn may manifest itself as genetic hair thinning!” adds trichologist Iain Sallis.

Alongside following a balanced diet, what hair products should I be using to help promote strong, healthy locks?A good vitamin supplement can ensure that all the correct vitamins and minerals are there for successful hair growth. Iron is often a watch point, as low iron levels or incorrect absorption are also linked to hair loss. Also, a good scalp treatment, exfoliating shampoo or scalp massage really help to get the blood circulating going and keep the scalp in the best possible state for promoting hair growth.

“The undercut is a really modern way to have your hair cut and styled, even though it’s been going strong since the 1980s. More and more people are embracing the trend, sometimes without even realising it! Today the undercut is a way of life, it’s great. If you’re nervous about getting an extreme undercut, don’t worry, they can be worn subtly too—giving your hair a modern twist,” explains Lee.

Graduated styles come straight out of the swinging 60s, with stylists of Vidal Sassoon’s era playing a key part in its creation and pushing this to the forefront of fashion. This style is great for maximising your best features and drawing attention away from those you don’t wish to highlight. It’s all about creating a wedge or angle within the hair’s shape – perfect if you want to keep your long layers but want more volume.

“The asymmetrical cut has really become a classic. A few years back it was the kookiest, coolest and most cutting edge thing to get done to your hair, and now your Auntie is going into the hairdressers and asking for it!” says Lee. “Asymmetry is just a way of life now and a 21st century way to approaching hair for any woman. It can incorporate different textures and shapes, which can look amazing. I love a long, sexy fringe… it’s really alluring and flirty!”

First coming into light in the late 70s and early 80s with Hollywood stars such as Farrah Fawcett and Don Johnson supporting the style, feathering is a technique used to give tresses the appearance of having bird-like layer.s The hair would be at least past the earlobes, parted in the centre of the crown, and once trimmed, brushed bask to expose the pretty plumage. Nowadays, starlets like Taylor Swift have opted for this style, making sure it’s still fighting strong.

Celebrity hairstylist Lee Stafford tells us: “The thing with an A-line bob is that it’s an absolute classic and will always be timeless. It’s a classic shape, so if it’s done well you can’t go wrong! People talk about face shape all the time and trying to cut a woman’s hair to make her face into the perfect oval – but listen, if you get a fantastic haircut that’s done brilliantly, it doesn’t matter.”

Ombré

BalayageBronde

Highlights

Dip-dye

“This is a technique in which the colour goes from darker at the roots to lighter ends – it’s also a French word meaning ‘to shade’” says Jack Howard, International Colour Director at Neville Hair and Beauty. “Since ombré took off, colourists and clients have been playing around and really having fun with this technique, and we can see all sorts of variations for all different taste levels.”

Jack Howard aka the king of balayage tells us exactly what this method involves: “It’s a French word meaning to sweep or paint. It allows for a sun-kissed, natural-looking hair colour similar to what nature gives us as children, with softer, less noticeable regrowth lines—the principal idea being that less is more when creating soft, natural looks. The balayage pieces should be very close and soft at the root, leading to a thicker highlight at the ends of the hair. Balayage is applied on the surface of the section and not saturated through the section until the very tips, otherwise you would have a streak of colour that isn’t very soft at all. It can also be called a freehand technique because no foil or meche are used to create the highlights.”

“Bronde is all the rage in LA and NYC (worn by the likes of Jessica Alba and Olivia Palermo) and it’s now the number one colour service at Neville,” says Jack. “Known as the perfect combination of brown and blonde tones, “bronde” is perfect for darker-haired clients who want to try out a lighter colour, and it can be warm, neutral or cool. The choice is really between you and your colourist. The key to the perfect shade of ‘bronde’ is to lighten hair by freehand painting pieces through the hair, making sure that the colour is softer near the mid-section and thicker towards the ends, and is even all the way through.”

Highlights are created when strands of hair are lightened, covered in foil and folded to prevent the coloured hair from touching the rest of the head, with the end result being pronounced locks of lighter colour. Now, the word ‘highlights’ can tend to evoke images of dodgy, streaky hair and popstars circa 1999, but they don’t need to be dated—just ensure that you don’t go for a colour much lighter than the rest of your hair to avoid a streaky look.

Dip-dye is ombré’s more daring sister! The graduation of colour from dark to light is less natural, and looks like you have dipped your locks into the bleach or colour pot—hence the name. Dip-dye has been über popular over the past two years, but now, more people are opting for the more subtle ombré or balayage. If you’re not ready to say goodbye to the dip-dye, then why not dare to try a pop of colour like a copper to match a brunette hue or a soft pastel to match a blonde?

February 2015 76

There is never an easy, painless way to rid of facial hair that doesn’t have repercussions; I have tried them all. Braun has launched a new epilator for women with the promise of four weeks of smooth skin. As guided by the team, I tried this on a clean face and used a little cream to minimise friction. While I experienced a mild ping on my upper lip area, for the most part, the pain was minimal and the results, amazing. There was a little redness that vanished in minutes. A week later, there aren’t any break-outs or in-growth; so I know for a fact that the usual side-effects of threading and tweezing are avoided with the Braun Face. Moisturiser and foundation absorbs faster and I only need half the quantity now because it’s not getting caught in the facial hair. I realise now what a difference it makes to epilate rather than bleach facial hair. I am a Braun Face convert for life!

With winter come cracked, dry heels and toes. As much as I pamper myself with body butters and the like, the effect is only temporary. I was asked to take weekly pedicures during the colder months, but that is just not possible with a working schedule! The good people at Scholl shared this amazing lifesaver that has sorted my feet and my life. This is an electronic foot file that comes with an abrasive head and runs on batteries. For one, pedicures at home are simply cumbersome—it is not possible to slough and trim the dead skin from all angles. This product smoothens the skin on the feet gently and its roller surface and ergonomic design make it very easy to use and reach. The Velvet Smooth Express Pedi is a must-have for working women, or really anyone who wants to groom their feet but cannot afford the luxury of time and money for frequent salon visits. Try this!

Scholl Velvet Smooth Express Pedi

Braun Face

It was with a lot of hesitation that I tried this. Blessed with oily skin that breaks up easily, I have spent my whole life trying to make my skin oil-free! But I gave in to the current oil craze and gave this a try. The product comes in a dispenser and you need only two pumps for your face and neck. Mildly scented with rose and lavender, I did feel some tingling on application on the sensitive patches. I patted it onto my skin and it absorbed instantly, which convinces me that my skin needed it. In fact, I applied twice the amount the next day and sure enough, that was gone as well! I woke up to glowing, soft skin and less oiliness on my T-Zone which is a life achievement. Within a week, I was wearing a lighter shade of concealer. My skin glows from within and I haven’t broken out at all. This is one of the five Rosehip oils in the world and it has now come to India. Grab it and glow!

My hair has seen its share of serums. I was pleasantly surprised to find this product work on a whole different level. Used on wet and blow-dried hair, it gave me a style that looked healthy and bouncy. It can be used on wet or dry hair and with or without blow-drying them. My hair usually falls limp or gets frizzy by mid-day and I need to brush or comb it, but on days that I used the Luxe Oil, I didn’t need to. I also applied it on dry hair as a touch-up and it instantly replenished the lost moisture and shine. Baby hair, flyaways and frizz are all but gone with every use. I realised later that it’s the keratin content at work! Use this as often as you like in tiny quantities because it is luxurious indeed, and a little goes a long way!

Lotus Herbals Safe Sun

It was with excitement and anticipation that I tried this sample shared with our team. While my hair is not damaged and I keep styling to a minimum, sun exposure and dryness have affected its lustre and body. The shampoo has a mild scent like all L’Oréal Professionnel products and lathers well. From the first rinse itself, I could feel the boost my hair received in terms of body and smoothness; it felt heavier too. If you oil your hair, you might need to use the shampoo twice, because this product is not very foaming. I dried my hair naturally and was pleased to find it sleeker, and in general, healthier-looking. What’s more, it stayed that way until the next time I used the shampoo, which makes this a must-have!

This is one of the bestselling sunscreens for a reason. It is made for Indian skin, is matte, light, and works like a charm every time. I was using another sunscreen that left my face patchy, when I decided to switch to this. A common complaint with sunscreens is that they leave a thin film on the skin that looks like a white cast. This one is not only matte but tinted to look as natural as possible. What’s more, due to the calamine content, this also acts like a primer, keeping my skin looking fresh the whole day. I now skip the primer and use only a light foundation without a dusting of powder, because it combats oiliness through the day in addition to lasting protection. The high SPF means I don’t need to reapply after a few hours, which makes this very convenient to use and simplifies my life. A must-have for all seasons!

MANES FOR MALESDapper men know better than to make one basic mistake—ignore their hair! So, pay attention gentlemen, as HENA DESAI brings to you the top styles that are sure keep you bang on-trend in 2015!

THE SIDE PART The 60s are making a comeback with this style that calls for slick, combed hair that gives you a well put-together look. Think Don Draper meets Leonardo DiCaprio and you will know you are right on track! For this look, use a fine-toothed comb to create a side parting in wet, shampooed hair. Then, blow-dry the hair in the direction of the parting for a polished look. Comb the rest of the hair on the other side downwards. Work some hair wax into your hair and define the parting again by combing through your hair one last time. The hair wax will help hold the hair in place and also add some shine to it.

THE TOUSLED MOP This style, a 2014 favourite as well, thanks to One Direction, lends itself to loads of texture. The look is stylised yet understated, definitely making you look trendy and boyish. The hair needs to be tidy on the sides and voluminous on the top. Just blow-dry the ‘mop’ and using your fingers, style into an undone look. Finish with a light-hold hairspray or styling mousse for a natural look.

THE SHOULDER LENGTH HAIR Yes, you heard us right...the long hair trend may be back for good—models on the John Varvatos and Vivienne Westwood fashion show ramps have shown us that! The key thing to keep in mind with this style is to not let them grow beyond your shoulders, keeping them well-groomed at all times. Blow-dry roughly and leave them loose with a centre parting for a relaxed, casual look. Regular conditioning is a must to keep your lengths healthy and so are trims to keep them in shape. Brad Pitt rocked it perfectly the last time it was in, and now, so can you.

PAY EXTRA ATTENTION TO

YOUR HAIR FOR A WELL PUT-

TOGETHER LOOK.

When buying a straightening iron, every woman faces a barrage of information

that leaves her more perplexed. From the plates to the temperature settings, an iron is after all an investment.

Vega’s Wonder Flat Straightener is a game changer with its Tourmaline Floating plates. Tourmaline is a crystal boron silicate mineral that aids in the hair smoothing process. Temperature is another key element. Fine, naturally wavy hair responds easily to heat and smoothens in a jiffy while coarse, curly hair may need longer. An ideal iron like the Wonder Flat Straightener keeps this in mind and incorporates a digital heat control so the user can regulate as per the hair type and present condition.

Dermalogica is a brand of international repute. SHEFALI SAMDRIA tried their recently launched BioSurface Peel treatment and shares her experience.

BIOSURFACE PEEL REVIEW

There is hardly anyone who has not heard of skin peels. While the payback in terms of brightness and clearer skin is something every woman wants, the redness and downtime is something anyone is a fast-paced

world would want to avoid. With this in mind, I underwent a peel treatment at Dermalogica in Mumbai. I was asked to fill in a questionnaire detailing my skin and physical history. Details with regards to topical and oral drug use were requested that often have an impact on the effectiveness of and reaction to the peel. I was taken to the treatment room for the procedure.

First the PreCleanse, an oil based emulsifier was used to clean make-up, sunscreens and oil-based debris, readying them for easy removal. This was followed by a soap-free, foaming gel cleanser to removes the impurities called Special Cleansing Gel. Tanvi wiped my face clean with a moist towel and proceeded to inspect my skin zone by zone. This is called Face Mapping®

beauty bonus

which is developed by the brand. The Dermalogica Professional Skin Therapist uses Face Mapping® to divide the facial landscape into fourteen zones and findings are noted on a prescription sheet. This becomes an accurate record of your skin providing the client and the therapist an objective view into the results of any professional product recommendation. My Face Mapping revealed dry patches and I was asked to increase my water intake and use a moisturiser regularly.

The BioSurface Peel is a three-step process that intensifies the peeling action gradually. A prep solution was applied to make my skin ready for the peel containing Salicylic Acid which weakens cell connections allowing for sloughing of skin cells. Combined with a low pH, keratin bonds are loosened, creating a burst of exfoliation, which addresses signs of ageing and hyperpigmentation.

For the second step, Tanvi gently applied the Enzyme active(-) onto my skin explaining how it delivers a

72.5% total enzyme solution utilizing Pumpkin Fruit enzymes with Papain, Protease and Aminopeptidase enzymes. Tanvi set a timer and I was asked to monitor my skin. As the third and final step, Acid Active (+) was applied to my skin that combined Salicylic Acid, Lactic Acid, bran-derived Phytic Acid, and Sugar Cane Extract. This step brightens areas of hyperpigmentation, helps removes impaction plugs in follicles especially in sebaceous glands, and aids in cell turnover. At the end of the set time, Tanvi gently applied a Decelerator to neutralize the acid actives.

My skin was cleansed once more. A maintenance kit was shared with me and a detailed 5 step regimen was explained that ensured my post peel skin received maintenance. I did not experience any redness or sensitivity and my skin had a soft glow. This is a peel I recommend to anyone who is dealing with skin issues like pigmentation, acne marks and scars or even uneven skin tone. The difference is palpable.

Dermalogica’s new range PowerBright TRx™ is a potent trio of skin-brighteners, which incorporate the newest technologies to produce more even, luminous skin tone. Hyperpigmentation due to sun damage and hormonal issues is on the rise among younger and younger women. Uneven skin tone, pigmentation and blotchiness is now considered the leading age-marker, suggesting “aged” skin! The PowerBright TRx™ system, consisting of three highly active products represents a streamlined approach to treating hyperpigmentation with the beneficial layering of active complexes to optimize results.

C-12 Pure Bright Serum – This highly active topical treatment helps address pigmentation imbalance with an exclusive combination of peptides, Rice-derived Phytic Acid, Zinc Glycinate, and Algae.

Pure Light SPF50 – While many factors may contribute to hyperpigmentation, the effects of UV exposure are the most common cause. This advanced daytime treatment moisturizer shields the skin from pigment-inducing UV light, now in a 100% chemical sunscreen base.

Are you ready to spend the month of love in style? Valentine’s Day is not just about your partner and your loved ones—it’s also about you. It is a good time to pamper yourself and

commit to treating your skin and body like a loved one.

DIFFERENCE IS THE KEYMen require a different skin care regimen and products specific to their needs and here’s why:• Thicker skin means men need exfoliation more

frequently.• Their skin is oilier compared to women and they have

more sebaceous glands that result in larger skin pores and higher chances of developing blackheads and whiteheads

• As men experience less hormonal activity, they are less likely to develop hyper-pigmentation and/or dark spots on their skin.

• Their skin is coarse owing to the regular use of a razor.

THE PERFECT SKINCARE REGIMENAs a result of all this, men need a slightly different approach to skin care. Following are some important tips that men can follow under the supervision of a dermatologist to achieve healthy, glowing skin this Valentine season:

Deep cleanse: A mild facial cleanser that removes all the impurities from within the skin pores without stripping it of its natural moisture is recommended. The best cleanser for oily or combination skin will be one that foams. For dry skin, a creamy cleanser is best. One should clean the face at least once in the morning before shaving and at night before going to bed. Body washes are recommended over soap bars for the body.

Toning time: After cleansing the skin, tone the skin—preferably using an alcohol-free toner.

Moisturise right: After cleansing and toning the skin, men should use a moisturiser. For dry or normal skin the best moisturiser is a cream. Go for an oil-free moisturiser, if you have oily or combination skin.

Exfoliate gently: Men are more prone to clogged skin pores and the subsequent development of blackheads. A gentle face scrub can be used once a week. A peel-off face mask can also be used once every three to four weeks.

Apply a broad spectrum sunscreen everyday: Men should definitely use a good broad-spectrum sunscreen with an Sun Protection Factor of 30 or higher everyday.

Shave correctly: It is good to take a shower before shaving in order to give the hair a few minutes to soak up water and humidity. Always use a sharp, clean blade as it requires less force for cutting hair and there are lesser chances of cutting the skin. Try to shave only in the direction of hair growth and not against it. If you use an electric razor, apply a pre-shave lotion first so that the hair on your face stands out. If you have sensitive skin that is prone to bumps and ingrown hairs, consider using an emollient-based shaving cream in place of a regular one. Complete your shaving regimen with an aftershave product to soothe the sensitive areas. Use a cream or gel aftershave if you have sensitive skin. In case you have dry skin, using a moisturiser after shaving is recommended.

Follow a good diet and lifestyle: Eat a nutritious and balanced diet. Regular exercise is also important for good skin. Good nutrition, exercise regime and lifestyle are key for the good health of the skin and overall health of the body.

Perfumes are a primal way to celebrate sensuality and beauty. SHEFALI SAMDRIA reveals the six basic fragrance types you should know when picking a perfume for yourself or others.

scent wise

Fragrance has held sway since ancient times as an alluring accomplice to women and men alike. Cleopatra’s love for scents made from crushed gemstones is as legendary as Coco Chanel’s vision to create a scent that replicated a woman’s natural scent when freshly bathed. Buying a perfume can seem daunting when you try it. You may find it change dramatically

from when you take the first whiff, to when you first apply it and then hours later it may smell entirely different! The perfumer’s art is creating this unique composition, which typically features: top notes, middle notes, and bottom notes that flower and emerge as the fragrance reacts with the body heat.

But the most important basic of a perfume is rooted in it’s composition that gives it a characteristic nature that makes it more appealing to some and less to others. Fragrances can be divided into 6 basic types as:

Floral The largest, and most popular category is created mainly from flowers, such as roses, orange blossoms, gardenias, jasmine and carnations. These are often blended together to produce a distinctive floral bouquet.

Oriental A heady mix of spices, amber, balsams and resins marks this type, suggestive of warmth and exotic sensuality. Because of the group’s rich, musky traits, these luxurious scents make the best statement in the winter.

Citrus Derived from citrus fruits such as lime, lemon, tangerine and mandarin, this fragrance type projects a sharp, tangy aroma. Naturally refreshing and uplifting, citrus blends work well for women who don’t want to wear overpowering fragrance.

Chypre A notably woodsy-mossy mix “Chypre” simply is French for Cyprus and is pronounced “SHIP-ruh.” Hints of bergamot, oak moss, citrus and patchouli enrich the sweet, earthy aromas are prominent.

GreenSharp, grassy notes blend with pine, juniper, leaves and herbs to create memorable perfumes. Sporty and brisk, green scents make good buys for the outdoorsy woman.

Fougere A combination of fresh herbs and mossy ferns, it is usually men who wear fougere fragrances, yet they still capture women’s olfactory attention!

If you are dressing up to the nines to impress your special someone this V-Day, we suggest that you pay extra attention to detail. Take some time off the day prior to your big date and prep your nails with these easy-to-do nail art designs. You’ll thank us later when

the nails perfectly complement the new ring, just in case he decides to pop the question on the day.

Love at your fingertipsYes, we mean it literally! Make the season of hand-holding a lot more fun by dressing up your tips to give him one more thing to marvel about you!

By Hena Desai

The Romanticised Frenchie

The French Manicure is a classic—it gives you a polished, chic look that you can wear almost anywhere. But since V-Day calls for some extra effort, give it a cute twist! • Begin with filing your nails in the desired shape (we

recommend shaping them square). Don’t forget to buff the nails after filing.

• Apply a base coat to your nails, which for a French manicure, is usually pale pink or brown.

• Once the base coat dries, paint your tips white. Apply a second coat if the colour isn’t opaque enough to your liking.

• Grab some heart-shaped nail embellishments/ stickers. Apply them neatly in a line on your nail where the white polish ends. Add some red rhinestones (available as nail stickers) to the heart in the centre of each nail.

• Finish off with a coat of clear polish to seal the deal.

Page 105: 02 HAIR - FEB 2015

Nautical Nails

This cute and colourful nail art pattern is sure to grab eyeballs. Here’s the best part: substitute the blue polish with his favourite colour and earn some brownie points!• This style looks best on short, trimmed nails;

so file away, keeping the edges rounded. • Apply a base coat to your nails. • Apply blue nail paint (or any colour of your

choice) to the thumb, first and last fingernails.• Apply glitter polish to the middle fingernail. • To create the sailor-striped nail, begin by

painting the fingernail white. Once dry, paint blue stripes on it using a fine nail art brush. After this, use a bright red nail polish to paint a heart in the centre of the nail.

• Apply clear polish on the nails to help keep the design in place.

nail trends

Coral Crush

Ditch the red polish and keep things fresh by opting for bright coral tips. Some glitter and chevron will help too.• Start off by applying a base coat.• As the base coat dries, paint the

desired nails in a coral shade. • Apply the glitter polish to the third

fingernail. • For the chevron pattern, apply white

polish to the nail. Using the same coral shade (or another darker hue from the same family), create three strips of a zig-zag chevron pattern with a nail art brush.

• As always, top it with a clear polish to prevent your nail art from chipping.

Do the Polka

These polka-dotted nails are super quick to do and will give your Valentine’s Day a retro touch. Keep the colour theme romantic; reds, whites and pinks should do the trick!• After you’re done applying your base coat,

paint your nails red (or any romantic colour of your choice).

• Dip a dotting tool (a wooden toothpick will work equally well) in the contrasting nail-paint (here, white) and start creating polka dots all over your nails. Do this by simply tapping the tool at the desired spot on the nail. Apply as many or as few dots as you like.

• Once you finish dotting all your fingers, apply one final coat of clear polish.

The darling of cosmetologists and Hollywood alike, Hyaluronic acid is dethroning Botox and its ilk as the new age anti-ageing nutrient. SHEFALI SAMDRIA decodes this new ‘IT’ ingredient.

Anti-ageing apprentice

HYALURONIC ACIDHydrated skin looks young, dewy and regenerates easily. Water being the main component of our bodies, it remains the key to any improvement in our skin and tissues. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a gel-like water-holding molecule that is the space filler and cushioning agent in all mammals. HA cushions joints, nerves, hydrates skin and hair, and fills the eye. It is of significance to the skin because 50 percent of the body’s HA supply is located in the skin tissues. With age and oxidation action, our body’s own supply and composition of HA declines, leading to dryness, wrinkles, loss of elasticity and sagging. It’s no surprise then that HA is the new

gold standard that every cosmetic company is in the race for. Through skin fillers, serums, creams and masks, HA is finding its way into every beauty cabinet.

Hyaluronic acid molecules have the unique ability to attract and retain more than 1,000 times their weight in water, and the body absorbs them within three to twelve months. Evidence also suggests that HA aids collagen production, making it a double whammy anti-ageing ingredient. Being a humectant, HA draws moisture into the skin and is best used as a serum and in masks for a deep hydrating treatment. While HA’s previous fame was limited

to fillers like Restylene, today, it is the ‘fountain of youth’ ingredient.

COLLAGENFor more than two decades, collagen has been the ‘it’ ingredient of the anti-ageing realm, an entire industry by itself, in fact. But both collagen and HA are connective, naturally-occurring substances that perform the same functions and in fact, boosting collagen without supporting it with HA does not give lasting results.

For a youthful, plump and radiant visage, the ideal anti-ageing cocktail should stimulate both Hyaluronic acid and collagen in the skin.

Every other week you hear of a new miracle ingredient that claims to turn back the clock while specialty skin

clinics and cosmetologists dish out fancier-sounding treatments and procedures. Meanwhile, the foundation of youthful, radiant skin, hydration and nutrition takes a back-seat. What if you could combine anti-ageing with skin nutrition?

future focusSKEYNDORAlways at the cutting edge of skin science, Skeyndor has introduced the two magic ingredients—collagen and Hyaluronic acid— for women who are using either of these ingredients topically.

SK - REGENERATING COLLAGEN VEIL ALGY MASKCreated for mature skin, this mask conserves, fortifies, improves and restructures the skin. Its revolutionary action gently weaves insoluble collagen fibres, creating a velvety 3D grid with very fine pores. It hydrates instantaneously, boosts elasticity, improves skin tone and restructures the epidermis for a youthful effect.

DEEP MOISTURISING MASKThis is a powerful hydrating treat for all types of skin at all ages, with polarised water and a high content in hyaluronic acid of very low and high molecular weight. It hydrates the skin in depth and at the same time protects it from premature water loss caused by aggressive external agents. It uses Xylitol, molecules of natural origin that guarantee perfect compatibility with the skin, to increase the levels of Aquaporins in the skin—the proteins that transport water to the heart of the cell. The Liposomed Polarised water allows greater water absorption in the cells at all skin levels, enhances cell regeneration and reinforces the skin’s barrier function to prevent water loss.

WRAP IT UPSimplicity is the key to everything, especially when it comes to your skin. Hydrating routines and care at a young age paves the way for timeless beauty. Make your skin your beauty priority!

men’s corner

A concealer is your go-to product on the days you have a special occasion. This will camouflage dark circles and blemishes instantly.

AU NATUREL SKINThe one thing that was clear from the men’s Spring-Summer 2015 runway shows, from Valentino to Dior Homme, was that the emphasis is on fresh, healthy skin. Sounds perfect, especially for tropical summer days. The key to achieving fresh, luminous skin is, of course, taking care of it. Remember gentlemen, the cleansing and moisturising routine holds good for everyone. Invest in a face wash that’s suitable for your skin type and follow it up with a sunscreen for the day. Exfoliating once a week will keep your skin safe from those dreaded dead cells as well. Petroleum jelly or a colourless balm will keep your lips from chapping. Complement your skincare regimen with lots of water, a healthy diet, and exercise.

The lazy boy’s cheat sheet to grooming: A concealer is your go-to product on the days you have a special occasion. This will camouflage those dark circles and blemishes instantly.

A NOD TO THE STUBBLENo longer just an old-fashioned sign of machismo, beards now boast their own brand of fashionable charm. What makes facial hair appealing is really how well-kept it is. Keep your beard neatly cropped and shave wayward strands regularly. Unless you’re trying to emulate popstars and reality TV stars, avoid trying to make a designer stubble of your beard.Remember that facial hair requires the same care as the hair on your head to keep looking healthy. Men’s grooming brands are increasingly bringing out specific products for facial hair. A spot of light oil or serum can also come in handy.

HAIR GOES EASYJust as the international runways pointed towards clean, almost dewy skin, they also focused on relaxed yet tidy hairstyles. The result is a business-meets-leisure look that moves seamlessly from day to night, with only a few tweaks. Use products with lighter textures to style your hair into a fuss-free, wispy look during the day.

Nights make way for wet and slicked styles, but in keeping with the season, give your hair some breathing space and don’t add too many products. The hair for the season is natural, and awkwardly graceful.

Healthy hair is the foundation of a great hairstyle. Shampoo and condition regularly, and consult

Page 110: 02 HAIR - FEB 2015

February 2015 116

your stylist or a trichologist to recommend products for all hair and scalp problems. On days, or evenings, when you need a shampoo but have no time to spare, opt for a dry shampoo to keep any hint of an oily head of hair at bay.

HEAD TO TOE CAREGrooming doesn’t stop at the face or your hair. To make an impression, focus on your overall look, right down to your feet. Keep your nails clipped and clean at all times—an occasional mani-pedi can be indulgent as well as useful. A hand and body lotion is a must-have, most certainly for those plagued with dry skin.

Head to a spa once a week. In the hands of an expert therapist, a spa treatment does not merely make cosmetic changes, but infuses the body and mind with a sense of well-being. A deep tissue massage will loosen tense knots in your muscles and is particularly helpful for those who work out regularly. Add a body scrub while you’re at it, and you’ll step out of the spa feeling as good as new.

QISHIKA TANEJA, international make-up expert and Executive Director, The Alps Group, solves all your skin and make-up troubles.

S.O.Ssave our skins!

I have extremely sparse eyebrows and

eyelashes. While I tend to use cosmetics

such as eyebrow pencils to fix this

temporarily, is there a permanent

solution that can help me?

– Reena A Go for permanent eyebrow shaping that

will make your eyebrows darker, well-set and

defined. For your eyelash woes, you may go

for eyelash extensions that last for up to three to six months. Or, if

you find it too short-lived, go for procedures like permanent eyeliner

or kohl application to make your lashes appear thicker. Both of these

will cost around R7,000 each and will last for 12-15 years in a row.

QQMy skin breaks out into small

red boils post waxing, which are often itchy since I have sensitive skin. At times, they also leave marks that do not fade away easily. How do I get rid of these? – Gaia A The waxing procedure fiddles with the hair follicles, eventually causing such red boils to occur on sensitive skin. So, ask your waxing professional for pre-waxing or post-waxing gels that may inhibit your problem. As first-aid, just add a Disprin tablet in water and apply all over the suffered skin. You may also try going for aloe vera wax, which is quite painless and hydrating in nature, too. For the marks you mentioned, try this soothing homemade recipe: just add a spoon of aloe vera gel, milk powder and honey to two spoons of sandalwood powder and few pinches of saffron. Apply all over the skin and wash off after 10-12 minutes.

QWhat’s the best way to deal with hormonal acne? What

ointments/pills would you recommend to control it? – Neesha A It is advisable for you to rush to your nearest endocrinologist to undergo complete hormonal tests to treat your woes internally. Make sure to use only prescribed ointments or pills. To make the problem less prominent as of now, do visit a skin specialist in an expert salon and go for treatments like ozone, red lasers and Intense Pulsed Light—an Italian technology that has proven to be effective in curing acne completely, is safe and sans any side effects too. Apart from this, follow a thorough ritual of cleansing, toning and moisturising twice a day; avoid scrubbing as it worsens the acne situation.

QI have a combination of oily and dry skin; the T-zone

being oily. What kind of foundation (preferably one with heavy coverage) would you recommend for my skin type? – Kriti A You may go for foundation variants like mousse, studio fix and derma foundation—listed in order of intensity. All of these provide full coverage to your skin and each is non-greasy—lending a mattifying glow as well as velvety finish to your T-zone. It will work wonders for the remaining area of your face—the C-zone i.e. cheeks and jawline, too. In case these appear too dry after application, add an ounce of water-based moisturiser and then apply the foundation over these areas to ensure a smooth and even skin texture over the entire face.

For many a diehard romantic, the rose will always remain the ‘flower of love’. Savour the beauty and benefits, aroma and ecstasy of roses with BRINDA GILL.

Literature narrates that in 41 B.C., as Egypt’s Queen Cleopatra arrived on the shores of Southern Turkey to meet Roman General Mark Antony, the rose-scented sails of her gold prow barge “so perfumed that the

winds were lovesick with them”, wafted an exquisite fragrance heralding her arrival. Rose petals are said to have carpeted her private suite; when crushed underfoot, they infused the air with romance and passion, casting a spell on her admirer!A

flavour of the monthAcross centuries and culturesLike in ancient Egypt—where the rose was the Queen of Flowers—roses were deeply valued for their beauty, fragrance and therapeutic attributes in India as well. Ancient texts speak of the beauty and benefits of roses in cuisine, cosmetology and traditional medicine.

“According to Ayurveda, the rose has many healing benefits. Rose extracts, with their cooling effect, are helpful in addressing pitta conditions, thus reducing inflammatory skin conditions and enhancing one’s complexion,” explains Rahul Kale, Co-Founder, Iraya. He adds another lesser-known fact about rose petals: they contain Vitamin C that along with its antioxidant properties nourishes and heals skin.

Liquid gold!Today, an array of rose extracts—from rose petals to rose water and rose oil—helps bring out the magic of this much-loved flower. “Though there are different varieties of roses grown in India, the beautiful Rosa Damascena that grows near Aligarh yields the most beautiful fragrance. It is one of the most expensive oils as approximately four kilograms of fresh rose petals, handpicked before dawn, are required for obtaining one gram of rose oil!” says Abhijeet Kelkar of Kelkar Foods and Fragrances, who has been studying ancient texts on Indian perfumery.

Often called liquid gold, rose oil is worth the indulgence. “Applying rose oil on skin improves blood circulation, that leads to healthy, glowing skin. Further, rose oil has an astringent action that cleanses the skin,” explains Abhijeet.

Equally uplifting is the heavenly fragrance of rose oil that evokes a feeling of love and pleasure when inhaled. Dab a drop, inhale its deep, heady fragrance, and allow yourself to slip into bliss. Just perfect for Valentine’s Day!

Abhijeet Kelkar, who has first-hand experience in producing rose oil, has a few suggestions:

• Blend two parts glycerine and one part rose water to create an easy and effective face cleanser.

• Soak cotton in rose water and place on the eyes to refresh them.

• Eat a spoonful of gulkand everyday. It cleanses the system, improves overall health and complexion and removes body odour.

• Enjoy a bath soaked in rose petals to relax the mind and body.

• Crush rose petals, add a pinch of saffron, a spoon of sandalwood paste and use as a face mask.

• Massage your face with pure rose oil blended with saffron extract and sweet almond oil for a glowing complexion.

Tip of the month: Clean your face well before you sleep.

LibraYour tarot for the month is ‘The Ace of Wands’. Opportunities knock on your door as you discover your confident side and are ready to take on the world. You decide to make time for your salon trips to get a great manicure, pedicure and aroma/Ayurvedic body massages that help keep you de-stressed and active. Hair will need active attention daily. It’s wise to leave it behind, and if leaving it loose, cut it shorter, making sure the ends are neatly cut. A few curls or layers will give you a youthful, bouncy look. Wearing minimum yet classic pieces of jewellery are a good choice to round off your beauty statement. If single, you enjoy being at your flirtatious best, making the most of life.

Tip of the month: Meditation keeps you calm, happy and beautiful.

AquariusYour tarot card for the month is ‘The tower’. Finances improve and you will gift yourself great luxuries and fashion accessories that you have been secretly desiring since long. Blues and all shades of aquamarine suit you. Add a touch of beauty to your look by tying a colourful scarf onto your head. Colour is important to you, especially if covering any grey hair, and it’s best to choose a colour close to your natural hair colour to make it look healthy and shiny. Love life needs all your positive attention.

Tip of the month: Add some extra hours to your sleep and you will see your skin and hair glow and grow respectively.

CapricornThe tarot card for you this month is ‘The Sun’, as fame, name and gain are all lined up your alley this time. Black and grey give you an immaculate look, as you choose formal garments and go for a long, layered hairstyle in tints of light brown. Make sure to use the best products, as being out in the sun will damage your hair. If involved in outdoor activities like swimming, it’s best to oil your hair before allowing it to meet the harshness of the sun’s rays or chlorine. If single, someone you fancy decides to reciprocate your feelings and you strike a great friendship.

Tip of the month: Avoid tying your hair tightly in the nights; allow oxygen to flow easily to the root tips.

SagittariusYour tarot card for the month is ‘The Emperor’. Staying calm enhances your beauty as you look to strike a balance between your work and personal life. Not having too much time to spare, you decide to keep your hair straight and relaxed in one uniform colour. Use a hydrating conditioner to make sure that your roots are well-cared for. Hues of red suit you. Love life is adventurous and you make quality time to spend with your mate.

Tip of the month: Henna and deep conditioning hair packs are a good choice for the good health of your hair.
