Improved accuracy andperformance

The new rigidly-designed and builtPuma 2600SY series feature a number oftechnology innovations that ensure lifetime accuracy. These include:

• Six strategically positioned heatsensors that automatically monitorand compensate for any thermaldisplacement occurring duringmachining operations. (Doosan reports that, as a consequence ofincorporating such advanced sensor

technology on its Puma 2600SY Mk IImachines, the effects of thermaldisplacement have been reduced by up to 70% when compared to Mk Imodels.

• The built-in type spindles now providedas standard on the new Puma 2600SYMk II machines feature a reconfiguredspindle bearing structure comprising 2 x Angular Contact Bearings and 2 xTaper Roller Bearings. The newstructure improves C-axis positionalaccuracy and spindle run out (less than

6µm), and the addition of Taper RollerBearings enables high accuracy, heavy-duty machining operations to beperformed with confidence.

• The new Puma 2600SY Mk II machinesfeature high-performance NTNmaterial (as opposed to Turcite) ontheir box guideway axes - resulting inimproved and more responsive axismovement and reduced axis wear.

CNC control systems continue tomove toward touchscreen human:machine interfaces (HMI’s) thatappear more like smartphones andtablets.

Leading control developers likeSiemens are at the forefront of thesetechnology developments.

Touchy feely!

The launch of Siemens’ Sinumerik 828D 15.6”TFTtouchscreen technology is a case in point.

While these new interfaces are considered more userfriendly, especially to the younger generation, the shifttowards them isn’t cosmetic - because the new systemsinclude a number of significant technology improvementsthat speed-up programming operations.

While machine tool operators will naturally look forease of operation from the new control technology…something that is clearly available from the larger 15.6”screens - programming flexibility is also important, especially in production-led environments.

Says Tony Dale, Mills CNC’s Technical Director:“We are starting to see a transformation in the area of themachine control HMI. Technology that has been widely-available in the consumer sector is now migrating to theindustrial sector (i.e. multi-gesture interfaces) which we areall familiar with on our mobile phones, tablets, etc.

“The new Siemens Sinumerik 828D HMI makesmachine tool operation and programming easier. Icondriven features (such as Zoom and Scrolling functions) andsystem prompts make programming and operation moreintuitive and minimise the potential for data input errors.

“By visualising the machining process on a biggertouchscreen, you are effectively using a large industrialiPad to control the machine tool.”

See the new Siemens Sinumerik828D TFT touchscreen controlbeing demonstrated at the‘Strokes of Genius…LIVE’ Open House in Mills’ ControlCentre facility…and see it inoperation on a Doosan Lynx2100MLA lathe.

‘Strokes of Genius...LIVE’Open House

The cell comprising a new Doosan DNM 5700 vertical machining centre and aROBOJOB (Mill-Assist) automated workpiece load/unload system (supplied byHydrafeed - the UK agent for ROBOJOB automated solutions), will demonstrate thesignificant productivity gains component manufacturers can expect to achieve fromautomating their machining processes and embracing unmanned production.

Says Mills CNC’s Technical Director, Tony Dale:“Our Open House provides the ideal platform for component manufacturers to seethe latest advanced technologies now available from Mills.

“There are 17 Doosan machines being exhibited at the event, and one of these,a new DNM 5700 vertical machining centre, will be interfaced with a compact, high-productivity ROBOJOB automation system.”

The ROBOJOB system being exhibited at the Open House is particularly relevantto component manufacturers involved in small-to-medium size batch production.

The system’s compact footprint, inherent versatility and easy set-up andoperation will also be a real ‘eye-opener’ to those component manufacturers whoare under the (false) impression that automation can be costly…complicated…and, as consequence, not for them.

Continues Tony Dale:“Automation, such as that offered by the ROBOJOB system, enablesmanufacturers to become much more flexible and, for a relatively modest

outlay, get more from their machinetools by allowing them to rununattended (i.e. during the day, overnight etc.).”

The machining demonstration at the Open House will show the ROBOJOBMill-Assist solution (comprising anindustrial robot with an exchangeableclamp gripper, a workpiece plate andracking system and a user interfacecontrol), in action.

Specific highlights that will impressvisitors include ROBOJOB’s:

• Fast set-up and change-over time:The system’s user-friendly graphicinterface means that specific robotknowledge is not a prerequisite, andthat system setups can be achieved inminutes.

• High accessibility andvisibility:Machine tool operators are able to seeall stages of the automation process(load/unload) clearly...with noobstructions, thanks to ROBOJOB’sopen design and architecture.

• Functionality: ROBOJOB is equippedwith a range ofstandard functionsallowing the operator toadjust the speed of therobot and the clampingforce of the grippers, oreven allow the robot togrip ‘eccentrically’.

As well as the automatedmachining demonstration takingplace at the Open House, representatives fromHydrafeed (ROBOJOB) willalso be hosting an‘Automation Seminar’ on bothdays where the commercial andoperational advantages of automationwill be presented.

T U R N I N G T E C H N O L O G Y . . . L I V E

Advances in machine tool and CNC control technologies have been instrumental indeveloping a more productive process for machining internal gears - called powerskiving.

Power skiving is a more efficient, effective and economical process for machining gears than shaping or broaching. It is a continuous process that allows all machining to be carried out in a single set-up.

Power skiving requires machines and cutting tools that can handle the highly-dynamic process.

At the heart of this process is the synchronisation between the (machine tool’s) spindle and the skiving tool, withrotation of the two occurring at a specific ratio dictated by the number of teeth being machined in the gear, and thenumber of teeth of the cutter.

In this demonstration the productivity gains available from power skiving will be highlighted on a high-performance,multi-tasking Doosan SMX 2600S mill-turn machine.

TT 1800SY turning centres are productive, flexible and high accuracy machines.

A particular strength is their ability to machine high-precision, complex components ina single set-up. The machines’ capabilities make them an obvious and ideal choice formedium-to-high volume small part production.

In this demonstration the TT 1800SY machine will be put through its paces machiningAmphenol Connector (electronic) parts, used in the aerospace sector.
