ICOM Slovenia– A Successful Promoter of ICOM Principles

New ICOM Code of Ethicsfor Natural History Museums published in Slovene

SloveniaisoneofthecountrieswhoseICOMNationalCommitteehasorganisedthetranslationoftheICOMCodeapprovedatthe28thICOMGeneralAssemblyin2013inRiodeJaneiro.TheSloveneversionofthenewICOMCodeofEthicsforNaturalHistoryMuseumswaspublishedbytheICOMSloveniainautumn2015,presentedtothepublic,andattheMinistryofCultureinMarch2016.

ThecodeincorporatesthefundamentalprinciplesofthebasicICOMcodeofmuseumethics(thatfirstappearedinSlovenelanguagein1993andthenagainin2005),but

Slovenia’smuseumsjoinedtheactivitiesoftheICOMin1991,sincewhentheSloveneNationalCommitteehassuccessfullypromotedICOMprinciples.Fortwenty-fiveyears,theICOMSloveniahasrespondedtotheincreasinglyrapidchangestakingplaceintheglobalisedworldthathaveanimpactonheritageprotection,onpreservingandprotectingmuseumcollections,aswellascommunicatingthevaluesandworthofourcommonheritagetofuturegenerations.

TheICOMSloveniaisarecognisedprofessionalorganisationwhichpromotesinternationalmuseumrelationsinthefieldofeducationandinterculturaldialogue.Throughitsactionsitfostersinternationalco-operationbydisseminatingSlovenia’sculturalhistoryandheritagebeyonditsborders,enhancingitsdistinctivefeatures.ByfollowingICOMguidelines,theICOMSloveniahascreatedaninternationalnetworkandpromotedtheapplicationofinternationalmuseumstandards,disseminatedthem

throughprofessionalchannels,andhelpedtostrengthenthesocialimportanceofheritageandtheroleofmuseums.

Furthermore,itactivelygeneratesknowledgebydevelopingandparticipatinginnationalandinternationaltrainingandeducationalprogrammes,aswellascontributingtogreateropennessinSloveniabyestablishingjointforumsthroughtheorganisationofconferencesandinternationalmeetingsofallkinds.Since1993anumberofICOMconferenceshavebeenorganisedinSlovenia;amongthemostrecentaretheCIMAMconferencein2011andtheCOMCOL4thannualconference,heldinCeljein2014.

A Partner in European Regional Projects

TheICOMSloveniaco-operatesonprojectswiththeICOMSEE,aregionalallianceforSouthEastEurope.Itispartofthelong-termregionalprojectRevitalisationofCulturalandNaturalHeritageinSouthEastEurope,whichwasinitiatedatthefirstICOMSEEconferenceinKladovo,Serbiain2006.Theprojecthas

sincedevelopedonthebasisofanintegratedandsustainableheritageconservationconceptofpreventivecareintheSEEregion.AsecondICOMSEEconferenceonthethemeofRiskAssessmentofCulturalandNaturalHeritageintheSouthEastEuropeRegiontookplaceinNiš,Serbia,inMay2012.TheprojectisplannedtoculminateinathirdregionalconferencetobeheldinBelgrade,Serbiainthewinterof2016.

DifferentactivitieshavebeenrealisedbytheICOMSlovenia,suchasseveralTIEMtrainingandcapacity-buildingworkshops,withtheaimofinitiatingorimprovingintegratedemergencymanagement.ThroughthisprocessSloveniaacquiredanexperttrainerforthefieldin2015:JanaPrislanŠubicM.A.,aspecialistconservatorfromtheRegionalmuseumofNovaGorica.

addsdetailedguidelinesonhowtodealwithculturallysensitivematerial,livecollections,humanremains,andsacralandarchaeologicalmaterialinSlovenia,discussingthewithdrawalofsuchmaterialfrompublicdisplayandofferingpreciseinstructionsonhowtopreserve,exhibit,return,researchandhandleit.

ThepreparationforthetranslationintoSlovenewasentrustedtoalargeeditorialgroupcomprisingthefollowingmuseumandotherexperts:BredaČinčJuhant,TomiTrilar,AndrejaBreznik,KajaŠirok,AndrejGaspari,JernejaBatič,TanjaRoženbergar,DarinkaKolarOsvald,VerenaVidrihPerko,MajaHaklSajeandMarjetaMikužintheroleoftheeditorinchief.ThetranslationwassupportedbytheGeneralSecretariatoftheRepublicSlovenia,Departmentfortranslation,anddesignedbyMojcaTurk.

Summer School of Museology Piran, June 2015 & 2016TheICOMSloveniageneratesknowledgebydevelopingandparticipatingintrainingandeducationalprogrammesforSlovenemuseologists,museumprofessionalsandstudents.Since2004ithassuccessfullycontributedtotheSummerSchoolofMuseologyandregularlyparticipatesbypresentingitslatestachievementsandbycontinuingtosupportitsyearlyprogramme.In2015and2016,theSummerSchoolwasorganisedbytheFacultyofHumanitiesattheUniversityofPrimorskabyEuropeanMuseumAcadamy(EMA),andbytheForumofSlavicCulturesinthecoastaltownofPiran.

Presentation: The House of European HistoryInOctober2015,theICOMSloveniainvitedtoLjubljanaTajaVovkvanGaal,theheadoftheacademicprojectteamforestablishingandbuildinganewmuseumofEuropeanhistory,andaformerdirectoroftheCityMuseumofLjubljana,aswellasoneofthefoundersoftheICOMSlovenia.ShepresentedtheprojectTheHouseofEuropeanHistorythattheEuropeanParliamenthasbeenestablishinginBrusselssince2007andwhichistoopenin2016.Itwillofferatrans-nationaloverviewofEuropeanhistory,takingintoaccountitsdiversenatureanditsmanyinterpretationsandperceptions.SelectedobjectsfromcollectionsofSlovenia’sMuseumsaretobeincludedinthepermanentexhibitionofTheHouseofEuropeanHistory.

Alsoin2015,theICOMSloveniatookpartinICOMSEEBoardmeetingsinordertodevelopastrategicplanforthethird,concludingphaseofthelong-termregionalproject.Inspring2015,itwashostedbytheICOMMontenegroinKotor,MontenegroandinNovember2015bytheICOMofBosniaandHerzegovinaattheMuseumofContemporaryArtinBanjaLuka(RepublicofSrpska),asaparalleleventtoaregionalconferenceonSocialInclusionandtheContemporaryMuseum.

Museum EthicsTomarkInternationalMuseumDayin2015,theICOMSloveniainvitedtoLjubljanaEvaMaehreLauritzenfromNorway(aformerICOMEthicsCommitteemember),anexpertinthefieldofmuseumethicsandacreatorofthepopularworkshopprogrammeEthicsinAction.Thepurposeofthistrainingwastoraiseawarenessofethicalguidelinesinmuseumsandtoconsiderwithparticipantsanumberofexamplesfromthefield.

New Trends in Museology TheworkshopwasbasedonthesecondeditionofthebookNewTrendsinMuseologybytherenownedmuseologistsLeontineMeijervanMenschandPetervanMensch,andpublishedbytheMuseumofRecentHistory,Celje,incooperationwith theICOMSloveniain2016.

Theauthorsofthebookandworkshopleadersexplain:“Theaimofthissecondeditionisthesameasthefirst(publishedin2011),focusingonissuesinwhichanewmuseologicalpracticeisemerging,suchascollectiondevelopment,learning,participation,qualityassessmentandintegration.

However,NewTrendsinMuseologyIIisabouttrendsthatreflectanewprofessionalawareness,inparticularthroughoutEurope.”InApril2016,aworkshoponnewtrendsinmuseologyattheSloveneEthnographicMuseuminLjubljanathusfocusedonhowamuseumshouldrespondandoperateintoday’sworld.

ICOM Slovenia AwardInOctober2013,theICOMSloveniapresentedforthefirsttimeitsawardstoSlovenemuseumsaimedatencouraging,popularisingandpromotingtheinternationalnetworkingoftheideasandactivitiesofSlovenemuseums.Atthesametime,theawardsareintendedtopromotetheannualInternationalMuseumDaytheme(chosenbytheICOMonagloballevel)atSlovenemuseums.Inautumn2016,theICOMSloveniawillpresentitsawardsforthefourthtime.

In2013theexhibitionproject:ORINOCO,TheIndiansoftheAmazonRainforestbytheSloveneEthnographicMuseumandthecuratorNinaZdravičPolič(Headoftheproject).TheprojectwasrealisedincooperationwiththeFoundationCisnerosfromVenezuela.

In2014 theexhibitionproject:TracesofSaintsCyrilandMethodiusontheTerritoryofSloveniabytheRegionalMuseumPtuj–OrmožincooperationwiththeMuseumofGorenjskaandtheCarinthianRegionalMuseum,andthecuratorsVerenaVidrihPerko,MarijaOgrin,MojcaVomerGojkovicandSasaDjuraJelenko.

Since2003,SummerMuseumNighthasbeenthemostpopularpromotionalmuseumeventinLjubljanaandforlasttenyearsinmanyotherSlovenetowns.Itisaoneday-event(from10.00untilmidnight),takingplaceonthethirdSaturdayofJune.OnthisoccasionmostmuseumsandgalleriesaroundSloveniaofferfreeaccesstoexhibitions,guidedtours,concerts,performancesandworkshops–averyattractiveandentertainingprogrammethatreachesaclimaxinthenighthoursandreachesouttohundredsofthousandsofvisitors.

New buildings and new permanent exhibitions

National Gallery of Slovenia TherenovatedNationalGalleryopeneditsdoorstoitscompletelyrefurbishedpremisesanditsnewpermanentcollectioninJanuary2016.Thisimportanteventmarksthebeginningofanewperiodandpavesthewaytowardsrichpublicpresentationofthemuseum’suniqueenlargedcollectionsofover600worksfromtheHighMiddleAgestothe20thcentury.TheartmuseumwiththelongesttraditioninSlovenia(establishedin1918)hasthusbecomeabeautifulmuseumcomplexofthreeunits,linkedtogetherinamodernwayinafunctionalharmoniousstructure,connectingthepastandthepresentthroughtitscollectionsandarchitecture:theoldestandentirelyrefurbishedpalaceoftheNarodniDom(1896),theNewWing(1993),andtheglassentrancehall(2001).

Plečnik House – Architectural Heritage of Slovenia TheuniqueandcompletelyrenovatedPlečnikHousereopenedtothepublicinSeptember2015.Itconsistsoftwohousesandagarden,wherethe

architectJožePlečnik(1872–1957)livedandworkedfrom1921.Itfirstbecameamuseumin1974.ThecomplexhousesthePlečnikCollection,aswellasanewpermanentexhibitionandastudycentre.TheinclusionofPlečnik’sHouseintheICONICHOUSESnetworkthatbringstogetherexceptionalarchitecturalcreationsofthetwentiethcenturysignifiesanimportantinternationalsealofapproval.TherenovationandinparticularthepresentationandprogrammelinkingthemuseumwithPlečnik’sarchitecturalachievementsinLjubljana,offersbothlocalsandvisitorsanewdimensionofrecognitionandidentity.Since2010,thePlečnikHousehasbeenmanagedbytheMuseumsandGalleriesofLjubljana.

ThepresentationentitledThe Wheel and the Flute: The oldest museum objects ifrom Museums of Sloveniaconsiderstheimpactofhumanheritagefromtheperspectiveoftwouniqueobjects:a5,200year-oldwheelandaflutefrom45,000BC,foundontheterritoryofSloveniaandpreservedbySlovenemuseums.Throughtwoshortfilms,thepresentationshowsthatouridentityisanassemblyofcomponentsfromourmaterialandspiritualheritage,leavingbehindimportanttracesofconstantlychangingculturallandscapes.

Wheel – 5,200 years oldTheoldestwoodenwheel,withanaxle,5,200yearsold,wasdiscoveredintheLjubljanaMarshes.Itwasshowntothepublicforthefirsttimein2013atanexhibitioncreatedbytheCityMuseumofLjubljana(whichconservestheobject),pointinginanoriginalmannertolinksbetweenancientheritage,technologicalandscientificdevelopment,cultureandart.Thewheel,itsappearance,material,productiontechniqueandsymbolicvaluesrepresentabeareroftangibleandintangibleelementsofstoriesandinspirationsforfuturegenerations.

Flute – A prehistoric treasureTheNeanderthalflutefromtheStoneAgecaveofDivjeBabeisconsideredtobetheworld’soldestmusicalinstrument(45,000BC).ItisoneofthemostimportantarchaeologicalfindsoftheNationalMuseumofSlovenia.Theflutewasfoundin1995attheDivjeBabearchaeologicalparkinnorth-westernSlovenia.Thisfindofaboneflutesuggeststhatprehistoricpeopleusedcarvingandpiercingtomaketoolsandinstruments,andshedsnewlightontheirartisticcapacitiesandsensitives.
