CELEBRATING 65 YEARSThis morning, our Weekday School celebrates 65 years of helping children grow in God’s love.

This ministry began in 1950, when the church’s Director of Religious Education recognized the need to provide a ministry for young children in the community. That year, “Weekday Kindergarten” began with just one classroom and one teacher. After 1968, it became Weekday School, and over the years the preschool has grown to serve more than 150 children, aged two and a half to five years old, and expanded to 13 classrooms, with a total staff of 38. weekdayschoolorlando.org

Hymns and songs in worship sing our faith. They are another way of expressing truth about God, what we believe about God, and proclaim our worship and devotion to God. You will note that there are times when no hymn number is listed in the order of worship. There is a reason. The text we sing from the screens differs from the text in our hymnal, which in some cases has been altered from the original. Sometimes in an attempt to make a phrase more current, some of the theology is lost. Therefore, we revert to the original text. Such is the case with If You Will Trust in God to Guide You. For example, the closing phrase of the first verse of our hymnal is “builds on the rock that will not move.” The original English translation of this German hymn is “built on the rock that naught can move.” In the former case the “rock” makes the decision that it will not move. In the later, the original version, nothing in all existence can move the “rock.” The later portrays the power and sufficiency of Christ in times of stress. It points to the strength of Christ. The former misses the point all together. There are several additional points in this hymn and in the opening hymn as well, but you have the idea. We endeavor to sing faith and truth. The Church has been endeavoring to do this in worship for millennia. Sing what you believe and believe what you sing. But by all means SING! That’s why God gave you a voice.- Dr. Dan Sharp
