Breathing enables the necessaryexchange of CO2 and O2 in the bloodcirculation.

The gas exchange takes place in thealveoli, i.e. the carbon dioxide is washedout and the venous blood is enriched withoxygen.

The result:Approximately 4 % oxygen from the ambient airare consumed.And approximately 4 % CO2 are exhaled to theambient air.Nitrogen or other noble gases are not taken up bythe blood and exhaled.
