ó DESCRIPTIONThis lock has an additional security latch bolt above the normal latch

bolt. If normal locks are not secured with a dead bolt, they can be

easily opened by pushing back the latch bolt using basic tools. Such

techniques cannot be used on this lock as the security latch bolt

triggers an automatic blocking mechanism which prevents the main

latch from being pushed in.

EUROPEAN EMERGENCY EXIT DEVICES

FORMER RULES FOR EMERGENCY EXIT DEVICESIn the past, rules on emergency exit locking devices were not set out in a single set of regulations. For instance, while

German regulations allowed locks to be equipped with an anti-panic mechanism, the standard for door handles speci-

fied how handles could be used with special anti-panic locks. The standard on fire behaviour in building materials and

buildings components allowed a panic bar to be used.

Panic bars were only mentioned briefly in such regulations with no established regulations governing their usage. The

German regulation on places of assembly states it must be possible to fully open an emergency exit door easily from

the inside. Until now, fire protection had been the highest priority while little attention was paid to the emergency exit

function in doors. Fire doors have now been retrofitted with panic door devices.

SPECIAL FIELDS OF USAGEWith the introduction of new European regulations, national regulations were adjusted to new specifications during an

adaption phase. Today, only devices in accordance with EN 179 can be used on emergency doors and only devices in

accordance with EN 1125 can be used on panic doors.

Architects and / or local authorities decide which actual locking system should be used on which door. EN standards

179 and 1125 give the following advice:

REQUIREMENTS FOR EMERGENCY EXIT AND PANIC DEVICES

• It must be possible to fully open doors on escape routes easily from the inside

• Emergency doors must open in the direction of the emergency route (EN 179 and EN 1125) with a single movement

of the hand within 1 second and without key

• Emergency doors must open onto the exit route

• Exit routes must not be blocked

• Door handles or panic bars must be designed in such a way that clothing will not get caught when users exit

through doors

• The end of the handle must be shaped in such a way that it points towards the door to avoid possible injury (EN 179).

EMERGENCY EXIT DEVICES EN 179

Emergency exit devices consist of a lock and a door handle (or alternatively, a push plate). EN 179 states emergency

exit doors must weigh less than 200 kg and not exceed a height of 2500 mm and a width of 1300 mm.

An emergency exit device must guarantee that a door can always be opened within 1 second by pushing the handle

once. The required release force must be not greater than 70 N. It is assumed that users will not try to force the actual

door when escaping.

The door handle must point towards the door to avoid injury. The emergency exit device must have specified durability

and specified resistance to misuse. The standard also sets out requirements for classification keys, CE labelling and

instructions for installation.

EN standard 179 regulates usage of emergency exit devices on doors in buildings which are not open to the general

public. It is assumed that users are familiar with the building and a situation of panic is unlikely to arise. The standard

can also be applied to doors in public buildings which are not frequently used.

PANIC EXIT DEVICES EN 1125

Panic exit devices consist of a lock, a panic bar (or alternatively, a push bar) and strike accessories such as striking

plates and floor sleeves. EN 1125 states panic exit doors must weigh less than 200 kg and not exceed a height of 2500

mm and a width of 1300 mm. Panic exit devices must enable users to open the door within 1 second by pushing any

part of the bar. The required release force must be no greater than 80 N with no pressure against the actual door and

no greater than 220 N when there is pressure against the door. The required opening force on a door under pressure is

tested as it is assumed people will press against the door leaf in panic when trying to escape. It must therefore be

guaranteed that the door can be opened in such circumstances.

To avoid injury, panic exit devices should not have any protruding edges and should prevent fingers from becoming

trapped. Panic exit devices (panic bar or push bar) must have specified resistance to misuse. The standard also sets

out requirements for classification keys, CE labelling and instructions for installation.

EN standard 1125 regulates usage of emergency exit devices on doors in public buildings which are open to the general

public. It is assumed people are not familiar with the building and a situation of panic is likely to arise.

BMH PANIC EXIT DEVICES

Lock series 4000 and 6000 have been especially developed for BMH panic exit devices. Series 4000 locks feature an upper locking mechanism

which is operated via the door handle. Series 6000 locks are based on lock case dimensions specified in DIN 18251. Lock 1778 is also certified

as a panic lock. It is based on the dimensions of lock cases in the non-handed Series 1700 and is non-handed itself.

These panic locks are certified according to our EU certificate of conformity 0432 – BPR – 0040 for use with specific panic bars made by the

manufacturers ECO Schulte, FSB and Hewi.

BMH panic locks for panic devices are labelled with the following CE mark:

Regulations for emergency exit routes and panic routes state that doors must open in the

direction of the escape route. Therefore, all panic locks and their combinations in this catalo-

gue are designed for doors which open outwards.

In exceptional cases, however, doors which open inwards are also approved by local

authorities.

We can also supply locks for such cases. You must indicate “side where danger is = hinged

side” in your order if the locks have a split follower. Ensure you have stated the correct direc-

tion for the door swing.

CHANGEOVER FUNCTION B

FUNCTION FROM THE INSIDEThe lock is locked and unlocked with a key. In the event of a panic situation, the dead bolt can be

retracted simultaneously with the latch bolt through the handle, even if locked, and the door can

thus be opened. If the lock has been locked with the key and the door has then been opened

from the inside using the anti-panic function, the door is still secured against opening from the

outside (the dead bolt is still drawn back and the follower is not engaged, therefore the latch is

still securing the door).

FUNCTION FROM THE OUTSIDEThe door has a handle on the outside. The lock is locked and unlocked with a key. If the latch

bolt is drawn back twice, the lock is switched to the transit function and the door can be opened.

The lock is switched to the closed function by turning the key towards the lock position once or

twice. The door can now only be opened using the key. If the key is turned once, the door is

secured by the latch bolt; if is turned twice, the door is secured by the latch bolt and the dead

bolt. It is thus recommendable to turn the key twice every time.

USEFor doors which need to be accessible from both sides at times and must be inaccessible from

the outside at other times. The door can be always opened from the side where the danger is.

TRANSIT FUNCTION D

in the event of a panic situation, the dead bolt can be drawn back simultaneously with the latch

the latch bolt can be drawn back using the handle and the door can be opened. When the door is

opened from the inside in a situation of panic, it can also be also opened from the outside using

opened from the outside after it has been opened in a panic situation, the dead bolt must be

locked using the key. The door can always be opened from the inside.

BMH Automatic locking function

AUTOMATIC LOCKING FUNCTION

Locks with changeover function B are fitted to doors which need to

be used from both sides and occasionally need to be inaccessible

from the outside at certain times. To do so, the outside handle must

be changed over, so it won’t engage.

There is an automatic locking function to ensure the outside handle

does not accidentally engage. The automatic locking function ensures

the key cannot be taken out of the lock before the handle is disenga-

ged again. The key must be turned to the lock position before it can

be taken out.

are drawn back using the handle and the door is then opened.

bolt can be drawn back using the key. When the door is closed, it is
