Ancient World Art – Did you know…
While excavating a village near Baghdad in 1936, the mysterious 2,000 year old vase at the left was found
A German archeologist performed an experiment by filling it with grape juice (as the ancients would have done), and it produced nearly 1 volt of electricity
This proves our ancestors had battery technology over 1,800 years ago!
It would have been used to electroplate objects with precious metals, such as gold and silver

Chinese Art – Did you know…
While studying the Terracotta Army, Pablo Wendel, a German graduate student, dressed up like an ancient warrior and hid amongst the statues.
"I got to the area where he was supposed to be, looked around and didn't see him - he looked too much like a terracotta warrior," Hong Kong newspapers quoted a Chinese security guard as saying!

On August 21, 1911, Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa was stolen right off the wall in the Louvre!
Oddly enough, the Mona Lisa wasn't even noticed missing until the following day.

Impressionism and Post-ImpressionismDid you know…
“Impressionism” comes from Monet’s painting on the next slide entitled “Impression, Sunrise”
An art critic used the title to come up with the term “Impressionism” in an attempt to harshly criticize Monet, but it ended up being the name for an entire movement of painters and one of the most important styles in history!

This giant spider shown on the next slide made over 2,200 years ago and was only discovered when a plane flew overhead in the 1930s!
It is so large (over 1,000 feet across) that archeologists cannot explain how it was made… without help from the air
Why and how do you think it was made? Some speculate this and other objects were
carved into the desert floor for religious purposes, or to map the stars, or even that they were created by aliens!
