OUR PARISH MISSION St. Gregory the Great

Mission Statement

St. Gregory the Great is a Catholic Church made up of people of many different ages, talents, and cultural backgrounds. We are an urban faith community with a small town feel of welcome and hospitality. Motivated by our baptismal calling, we accept our duty to embody the presence of Jesus Christ in the world and to take up the mission he entrusted to us by our word and example. We glorify God through support and service of our time, talent, and treasure to our church and to the larger community in which we live.

MASS FOR HOPE AND HEALING On Saturday, October 19, 2019, the Archdiocese of Chicago will celebrate its 8th annual Mass for Hope and Healing. Since 2011, this Mass has brought together people from around our Archdiocese to pray for all who have suffered and continue to suffer from the evil and heartbreaking issue of sexual abuse. The Mass will take place at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Church, 1080 West Roosevelt Road, Chicago, IL. The main celebrant will be Father Larry Dowling, Pastor of St. Agatha Catholic Church. If you have any questions regarding the Mass, please contact Thomas P. Tharayil, Director of the Office of Assistance Ministry at 312.534.8267 or [email protected].

TAIZE PRAYER SERVICE On Sunday, Oct. 6, we will be hosting a Taize Prayer service beginning at 4p.m. in Church. Taize prayer involves simple chanting in the Taize style, a Scripture reading, intercessory prayer, and an opportunity for silent prayer and reflection before an icon of Jesus, Mary or one of the saints. This month we will pray before an icon of St. Francis of Assisi whose feast day is Oct. 4. If you have never experienced this form of prayer before, please consider joining us.

WHERE FLAMES A WORD—CHICAGO CHAMBER CHOIR Have you ever felt fully present? Maybe you climb a mountain—whatever that mountain is to you—and you sit a the top; you rest. Here, you allow your mind to drift in and out of ideas, in and out of focus. In the experience of each passing moment, there is wonder in the enormity, awesomeness, and humanity of the world. Words are evocative, yet insufficient. In this concert, we invite music and text to be our guide through this journey; through autumn and summer, night and morning, water and mountains. Familiar songs like Shenandoah and familiar composers like Brahms compliment profound works by Kite Smith, Eric Whitacre, John Rutter, and others to provide insight into our shared journey and the world that surrounds us. Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen’s Statements anchors the concert, bringing us in and out of these moments of focus. (IN COLLABORATION WITH THE CHAI COLLABORATIVE ENSEMBLE)

Saturday, October 12, 7:30pm at St. Ignatius Church, 6559 N. Glenwood Ave., Chicago Sunday, October 13, 3:00pm at St. Ita’s Catholic Church, 5500 N. Broadway, Chicago

STORYCORPS Artist-in Residence Amy Alznauer has recently forged a community partnership between St. Greg's and the national organization StoryCorps. You may have heard some of their interviews on NPR. "StoryCorps’ mission," as they say on their website, "is to preserve and share humanity’s stories in order to build connections between people and create a more just and compassionate world." And that is exactly what we hope to do here, within our own parish. Every one of you has the opportunity to find a friend or family member and together record your story at the Story Corps booth in the Chicago Culture Center (78 E. Washington St.). Find out more at: www.amyalz.com/StoryCorps and listen to our stories here: www.stgregory.net/EducationMinistries/StoryCorps.

BABY BOTTLE PROJECT The month of October has been designated as Respect Life Month. Beginning this weekend, Oct. 5-6, our parish will be participating in the Baby Bottle Project benefiting The Women’s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. This non-profit organization directly assists mothers and families experiencing crisis pregnancies by offering emotional, financial, material and spiritual support through counseling, material and monetary provisions, prayer and other aid. By God’s grace, The Women’s Centers have saved many thousands of babies and their mothers from abortion since opening in 1984. Please take a Baby Bottle home with you after Mass this weekend, fill it with your spare change, and return it the weekend of Nov. 2-3. For more information, please visit their website at www.womens-center.org or call 773-794-1313.

ICON EXHIBITION Joseph Malham, iconographer and author, will host an annual exhibition of original and limited edition icons, including panels, signed prints and a new line of icons hand-painted on tiles. The show will be on Saturday, October 12 from 3 - 7 pm at the Icon Studio at St. Gregory the Great Church Parish Center, 5545 North Paulina Street in Chicago, one block west of Ashland at Bryn Mawr. There is plenty of street parking as well as in the church lots. Refreshments will be served and the event is free and open to all. There will also be a raffle with the chance of winning a limited edition signed icon print. For more information please call Joe at 773-561-3546 or email at [email protected]. Please note that the Icon Studio is on the third floor and, unfortunately, is not handicap accessible.

MINISTRY OF THE WEEK—COFFEE & SOCIALS St. Gregory the Great Parish regularly hosts a Coffee & social in the High School Cafeteria or Social Hall after the 8:30a.m. and 10:30a.m. Masses. Various Parish ministries host these socials which give our parishioners an opportunity to meet and greet one another and to find out more about our many Parish ministries. Any Parish ministry interested in hosting a Coffee & should call the Parish Center at 773-561-3546 and talk to Bernadette Daniels.

Dear Friends,

It would be an honor to have you join me on a spiritual pilgrimage to the Eternal City of Rome next Spring. The pilgrimage promises to be a journey of renewal of faith and fellowship as we travel to Italy in the spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ. Tours will include world-famous religious and historic sites and we will meet with special guests. It is my hope that you and members of your parish community will be able to join me on this once-in-a-lifetime experience of Christian Rome.

Sincerely yours in Christ, Cardinal Blasé J. Cupich

Hope to see you there!! BINGO WORKERS NEEDED Every Tuesday evening St. Gregory the Great hosts Bingo in the Social Hall of the gym building. It is our biggest fundraiser. Bingo funds have been used to help pay for maintenance and repair projects for our parish buildings. It also helps to make up for the budget shortfall in terms of our Sunday collection. We are very much in need of people who are willing to help run Bingo. If you can volunteer only one Tuesday a month, that would be helpful. The doors to Bingo open at 5p.m. It usually ends by 9:45p.m. You would not necessarily need to be present for the entire time. There are many different jobs that you can help with. If you would be willing to help with Bingo or have any questions about the various jobs associated with Bingo, please contact Fr. Paul at the Parish Center.
