Let’s put ourhouse in order

The November EGM was called by the MC over the land matter which

by now is on every member’s mind and lips. The caveat placed on the land

for the last six years was extended for six months to end in July 2011. The

MC, on the recommendation of the Task Force, did not extend the caveat

and allowed it to lapse. This was done with good intentions for the Task

Force favored negotiation with the PPGS (Subang Golf Corporation) without

the caveat hanging over their heads. It was decided because our President

was in touch with the higher echelons of the government who assured him

that it would be settled.

With the lifting of the caveat, we lost our protection and to our surprise

the Federal Land Commissioner issued a court order in late September

claiming ownership of the land. That led to a big “all hell broke lose” kind

of situation among members. Some accused the MC of not doing its job

of protecting the interests of the club. Others went so far as to finger point

that some MC members had sold the club to the government. Many others

figured we would lose the club and the land would be developed by some

conglomerate. Everybody was speculating as none of us knew what the

real outcome would be.

The EGM held on 20 November 2011 showed unity among members.

Firstly, we agreed we are prepared to go to court over the issue, otherwise,

we stand to lose the land altogether. Second, members decided that we

should continue to negotiate with PPGS without agreeing to their takeover

unless terms and conditions are right. For that, members elected a new

Task Force that is independent, yet responsible to the house, to report their

findings to the MC.

As a member, I am proud that KGNS members acted with their heads.

We are all shareholders of our company KGNS and the present MC want

the best for members. Only time and the efforts of all members will tell us

what the fate of the club will be.

Life must go on. The golf course must still be maintained. Littering is

still rampant and cigarette butts are everywhere. Divots are getting worse

with the spate of rainy days. Members must remember that it is their duty

to fill divots. The main culprits are those using buggies without caddies.

Sometimes even the caddies must be told to do their work and not ride

on the buggies most of the time. Smokers, please use the containers

provided for your cigarette butts. The Management will seriously consider

banning smoking on the course if this dirty habit of flinging cigarette butts

everywhere is not stopped.

Bunkers must be raked, pitch marks must be repaired. Can you blame

me for singing the same tune each time I write? The responsibility rests

with every golfer who plays our courses. Whether young or old, low or high

CAPTAIN’SNOTE

handicappers, male or female or in competition or daily play, all golf

etiquette and rules must be observed. Marshals and MC members

have been empowered to note errant golfers and action will be taken

against them without fear or favour. Please be forewarned!

With the rainy spell, the courses have become soggy. Play on the

Kelana is difficult and buggy usage has had to be denied on many

days. The perennial problem of drainage will be looked into again in

the upcoming year. On the Putra one hole that is problematic is No.

5. Rest assured that once the rainy season is over, we will look into

rectification work to avoid future problems with other aspects of

course renovation also beginning next year.

Tree planting is ongoing. The MC has agreed to launch a tree

planting donation drive among members. Members can select any

of the recommended trees from the Course & Ground Department

for RM500 each. For your contribution, your name will go on the tree

and you will be given a Green Fee voucher worth RM150 per tree.

This is your chance to show you care about your course by making it

greener. It is your club, so do come forward and be a tree donor and

live in perpetuity in KGNS.

During 2012, all Medal competitions will be held differently. There

will be a sponsor each month, competitors will get a breakfast

and lunch, and better prizes will be awarded. There might even be

goodies if the sponsors agree. All Inter-club matches (home and

away) will follow the same rules. It will still be on a first-come-

first-served basis and all participants MUST wear the official club

T-shirts. Those of you, whose T-shirts are two years old may get

replacements of two each for the next two years.

Social activities in KGNS have risen to a fever pitch with the active

sub-committee working hard at organizing events. Social nights,

festival gatherings, NYE dinner and dance, etc., inter-club squash

games, karaoke competitions, and many others are being organized.

Look for them and come join in the action.

I have another six months to go as your Captain, and as I promised,

I will continue to make KGNS a better place for all us.

Happy Golfing and Happy Clubbing!

CLUBNEWS

The Budget for Operations was approved at the last EGM held on 18 December 2011 with some concern over the revenue derived from Administration Fees on Membership Transfer due to the pending land issue.

The proposed Capital Expenditure for 2012 of RM7,328,800.00 was also tabled for approval during the EGM. However, it was reduced to RM2,716,500.00 because the allocations for upgrading of the Driving Range, Golfers Terrace, Entrance to the Lobby, Men’s Changing Room, Renovation of the Gymnasium and Purchase of new Gym Equipment were not approved.

The next time when you are at the club, do not worry about your handphone’s battery getting low. Battery charging is available for iPhone, Blackberry, Nokia and Samsung handphones only.

Thanks to our sponsor, Maxis for installing two units of Chargers for the convenience of KGNS members located at the Golfers’ Terrace and Poolside Terrace.

Some 60 new members were inducted as Ordinary Members during the Introduction Night

on November 17. The evening began with the time-honoured ritual of a welcoming presentation

In his welcoming address, President Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Megat Najmudddin Megat Khas

stressed on the 3D’s that all members and their families have to observe, i.e. Discipline, Dress

Code and Decorum for golfers and non-golfers alike. He urged all to abide by the Rules and

Regulations of the Club and reiterated that at KGNS members keen on golfing need a handicap,

must attend a golf seminar before taking a handicap test. Golfers with handicap need only to

attend a golf seminar and then play a familiarisation round with a Committee Member, which can

be arranged by the Golf Department.

After the formal introduction and dinner, a video presentation on the club facilities,

its management line-up, rules and regulations, F&B facilities, the varied social & recreation

acitivities and amenities available was shown to the new members.

On behalf of the KGNS family, Berita Subang wishes all the new members Happy Golfing

and Happy Clubbing!

COURSE &GROUNDS

Fairway Hole # 5, PUTRA COURSE – SOGGY PROBLEM

Hole 5 on the Putra Course has a major problem of water ponding on its fairway and balls getting plugged or lost in the soggy areas. We are looking into the problem and will come up with a solution soon.

The major problem areas have been identified. The soil type on the fairway is “high density clay” that came from the construction of Pond A on the right of the fairway. This soil does not permit water to seep through into the underground drainage of the fairway to get the water to Pond B and C. Secondly, the high water table of Pond A also contributes to the sogginess of the fairway as water from that pond seeps through to find its own level leading to more water retention on the fairway during the rainy season. A third fault may be that the gradient of the fairway in relation to the left sided ponds may be too low.

To overcome the first fault, it would be best to replace the entire fairway to eliminate this clay type of soil. This may prove to be a major exercise and very costly. Another way is to address the first two problems together.

When the weather permits, we shall drain Pond A and then line the pond with a membrane to prevent seepage. Once this is done, we will treat the soil type on the fairway by repeatedly hollow-tining with sand top-dressing until the texture of the soil type is changed by nature. The budget for pond lining was approved recently and if there is extra money left, it would be good to engage a surveyor to advise on the gradient of the fairway to slope it towards the left sided ponds to further drain the fairway.

The conclusion that the water table of Pond A is too high and causes seepage into the fairway was identified when all the ponds at that hole were drained. The fairway was less soggy, but due to the high rainfall, the top of the fairway was water-logged. This proved that the soil type on that fairway does not allow the rainfall to seep through and be drained via our underground drainage.

If the fairway can be constructed to slope towards the left ponds then all drainage problems on the hole will be solved and golfers will be able to enjoy the hole.

We target to finish all the work on Hole 5 by the end of June.

UNEVEN TEE BOXES

Some of our teeing grounds are uneven due to the sand used to build the tee-boxes becoming compressed over time. We need to sod out the grass to re-level the ground. This exercise will take at least a month before the grounds can be used. You may have noticed that Hole 4 on Putra has been completed awaiting for it to settle and is near ready for use. We are doing the same on Holes 3, 11 and 17 on the Putra Course while over at the Kelana Course such work has been completed

FRUIT TREES AT THE PUTRA COURSE

To attract birds and squirrels and other small creatures, we are planning to plant fruit trees on our golf courses. There will be a specific fruit tree planted at each hole on both courses not just to attract birds and animals but also to identify and give tribute to the variety of fruits of Malaysia. Perhaps someday in the future you may be able to eat rambutans or mangosteens if you play during the right seasons.

POND EDGE TREATMENT – Hole 13 Kelana Course

Installation work for the pond edge treatment for Hole 13 on the Kelana Course has been awarded and work is expected to be completed soon provided there is no hitch. This work is necessary as the water in that pond is eroding the ground surrounding the green.

SmokersPlease take a container

for your cigarette butts to

avoid littering the courses.

KGNS caddies are not allowed to smoke

within the clubhouse premises other

than the caddie hut and halfway huts.

SAFETY NETTING FENCING – Hole 3 Kelana Course ( 20m x 255m)

On Hole 3 of the Kelana Course the safety netting to prevent stray balls onto the road will be awarded soon. This contract is to replace the present safety netting that is torn and worn out. Golfers please be patient and play golf at that hole according to the standing instructions for the day when work is in progress.

PONDING PROBLEM AT BUNKER Hole 15 and BUGGY TRACK at Holes 15 & 16

Ponding of the approach bunker on Hole 15 on the Putra Course and the flooding of the buggy path are both due to the slow discharge of water from the two ponds nearby. Work will be started soon to address this problem and more discharge outlets into the monsoon drain will be constructed to eradicate the water retention problem.

The recent wet weather has not

been kind as it has made our golf

courses soggy and that means

it is extremely important that all

golfers repair -- or ensure that

their caddies repair -- pitch marks

on the fairways and greens and that divots be repaired with the

provided sand mixture.

If our golf members do their part to repair fairway divots

and pitch marks on and around greens, the soggy damaged

surfaces will heal much more quickly.

It has also been noticed that many players are not raking the

course’s sand bunkers.

Divots

mixture in the provided buckets

to fill your divots. Pour enough of

the mixture into the divot to make

it level with the surrounding turf

and then gently tap it down.

Pitch Mark

That “dent”, or pitch mark, your

ball makes when it hits the green

if left unrepaired not only does

it make the putting surface look

ugly, it also interferes with putts.

Rakes

Playing from a bunker is

challenging enough and if your

ball comes to rest in a foot print,

your upcoming shot is even

more difficult.

Please always use a rake not

your foot or club to smooth the

sand.

After raking place the rake

by the side of the hazard and

parallel to the line of play – not

in the bunker.

DISCIPLINE

Let’s talk about DisciplineMr. Jaswinder Singh (JS), the present Chairman of the Discipline

Sub-Committee (DSC) was appointed by the Management Committee

under Clause 27 of the KGNS M & A, whereby at least two members of the MC must be in the service of the Federal Government if none

served in various ministries, including Information, Finance, Energy Telecommunications and Posts and the PSD. Currently, he is the Undersecretary of the International Division of the Ministry of Works. Even though he does not have a legal background he had served as Secretary of the Disciplinary Board in the Works Ministry. Additionally, his DSC members include lawyers and even a retired judge. JS has been a KGNS member for over 11 years.

Asked to describe the KGNS discipline process, JS explained the club has a two-tier review structure – a Preliminary Investigation Panel (PIP) and a Discipline Sub-Committee (DSC). Upon receipt of an official (i.e. written) complaint, the respondent or respondents are invited to give (also in writing) their side of the story. Both parties are encouraged to provide supporting

reviewed by the PIP, which makes a recommendation as to whether there is a case to answer. If yes, the PIP will refer the case to the DSC for further review. If no, both parties are formally informed of the PIP’s recommendation and the case is considered settled, unless the complainant requests for review by the DSC.

For the DSC review, a hearing whereby both parties attend in person is scheduled. At the start of the hearing, the Chairman describes the alleged infringement and invites the respondent to plead. If he admits

mitigation. However if the respondent does not admit the allegation,

can be cross- examined by both parties. At the close of the hearing, the DSC shall decide whether the complaint has been substantiated

of the punishment is also discussed and agreed on by the DSC. However if the respondent is dissatisfied with the outcome, he may apply for a review by the MC. Under present Club bye-laws, only Ordinary members may make a complaint. Privileged members (including spouses) have no standing and cannot complain directly. (Full details of the Club bye-laws governing disciplinary procedures are provided in the latest edition of KGNS General Bye-laws booklet, available on request from the reception).

JS estimates about 80% of all complaints are for Golf Dangerous Play. For such cases, complainant and respondent(s) are required to complete a standard Q&A form, designed to extract as much factual information as possible about the incident. Other complaints relate to Golf Slow Play and Golf Etiquette (skipping holes, overtaking flights at drink huts, not repairing divots or pitch-marks, etc.) Non-golf complaints are usually on ungentlemanly behavior (such as verbal abuse of staff or physical abuse of club property).

When asked how the DSC decides on punishment for each case, JS explained that punishment ranges from a simple letter of reprimand (i.e. a warning letter) to suspension (for up to 6 months normally, though the bye-laws provide for suspension up to 36 months). In extreme cases, a member may be expelled from the club though this is seldom exercised, if at all. He clarified that suspension means suspension from use of all club privileges, i.e. a suspended member may only visit the club to pay his bills.

JS views Dangerous Play as “quite intolerable”. “Imagine a ball in flight can crack or split a branch of a tree, what more if it hits a person” he explains. Dangerous play situations often result from impatience or frustration (e.g. someone hits a ball while the flight in-front has just walked off the green but still “within range”).

Whether due to poor execution or poor judgment, if a player reckons that he has committed an infringement he should walk forward and apologize immediately. In most cases nobody is hurt and the apology is

normally accepted. Even if a complaint is lodged, the apology can be viewed by the DSC as a mitigating factor. Quite often a player may get impatient or frustrated because of slow play by the flight in-front. JS’ advises such people to seek help from a course marshal rather than to try to “send a message” themselves and warns that the DSC tends to have less sympathy for low handicap offenders for dangerous play complaints. JS further explains that it is possible that two seemingly similar offences result in slightly different punishment severities. This is because the DSC takes other factors into account. For example, an offender who shows remorse for his action is likely to get a lighter punishment

What are the main challenges for the DSC? As DSC chairman, JS is not happy that some cases have dragged on for months without closure. He admits it is often difficult to schedule dates convenient for all parties (DSC, Complainant, Respondent and witnesses). Sometimes witnesses resist attending hearings, finding it inconvenient or too bothersome. Typically, one or two cases are heard at each DSC sitting, with each case lasting about an hour. Another challenge relates to certain human behavioral traits such as arrogance or propensity to be less than truthful. JS warns that such behaviors could work against the accused.

Has there been an increase in discipline cases in recent years? JS agrees that while the “raw data” on the numbers and types of complaints handled in past years is available, he admits he does not know if things have gotten better or worse since the data has not been summarized, categorized or analyzed. He agrees such a log could, over time, ensure better consistency of punishment for like-offences (using the “precedent” approach), allow better tracking of repeat offenders, and more importantly, provide justifications for proactive mitigating actions by the Club. For example, the club could put up signs at drink huts (and suraus) to warn players that they could lose their priority if they take such breaks.

Perhaps it is time for this club to target for a zero KPI on complaints for dangerous play!

The year 2012 is sure to be remembered, the year the R&A and the USGA came together to unifythe Rules

of Golf, as they prepare for the return of golf to the Olympic Games. According to the governing bodies, the

Rules of Golf 2012-2015 includes changes to nine of the 34 principal rules.

Imagine winning a cash prize of one million Ringgits for striking a hole-in-one and not losing your amateur

status. Starting in 2012, you can win unlimited cars and cash prizes of any value if you strike an ace in any

golf tournament that offers such rewards.

The new ruling, however, does not apply to other novelty event such as longest drive, nearest-to-the-pin,

nearest-to-line, etc.

Other significant Rule changes:

A new exception is added that spares the player from penalty if their ball moves after it has been

addressed when it is known or virtually certain they did not cause the ball to move. For example, if a gust

of wind moves the ball after it has been addressed there is no penalty and the ball is played from its new

position.

[Note: This change was made after the incident in the final round of 2011 Open Championship when Rory

McIlroy was penalised when his ball was moved on the 7th green by the wind after he had addressed it

and the ball had to be replaced in its original position. Now, there is no penalty, but the ball must be played

from its new position (after it stops moving)].

Exception 2 to this Rule is amended to allow a player to smooth sand or soil in a hazard at any time,

including before playing from that hazard, provided it is for the sole purpose of caring for the course and

Rule 13-2 (improving lie, area of intended stance or swing or line-of-play) is not breached.

[Note: This change was made because of an incident at 2008 Zurich Classic when Stewart Cink was

disqualified for turning in a wrong score because he was unaware of the penalty for testing the surface of

a bunker under the old Rule. Cink had stood in a fairway bunker to hit his ball, which was outside of the

hazard, with his ball finding a greenside bunker. Because his caddie had raked Cink’s foot prints in the

fairway bunker, by rule the sand had been tested and a penalty was assessed.]

The rule is amended to provide that the penalty for starting late, but within five minutes of the starting

time, is reduced from disqualification to loss of the first hole in match play or two strokes on the first hole

in stroke play. Otherwise the penalty for breach of this Rule is disqualification.

Other Changes:Addressing the BallThe definition has changed to say that a player has addressed the ball simply by grounding his club

immediately in front of or behind the ball, regardless of whether or not he has taken his stance.

Rule 12-1 – Seeing and Searching for a Ball This Rule is tweaked for clarity:

(i) It permit a player to search for his ball anywhere on the course when it may be covered by sand and

to clarify that there is no penalty if the ball is moved in these circumstances, and

(ii) There is a penalty of one stroke under Rule 18-2a if a player moves his ball in a hazard when searching

for it when it is believed to be covered by loose impediments.

Playing from the Wrong Place (Stroke Play)Note 3 is amended so that if a player is penalised for playing from a wrong place, in most cases the penalty

will be limited to two strokes, even if another Rule has been breached prior to his making the stroke.

The final quarter of year 2011 saw the KGNS squash team involved in various tournaments to nurture KGNS’ young talents by playing in many competitive games. With these exposures it is hoped the junior squash players will grow into excellent adult players.

The squash team competed in the 12th Raintree International Jumbo Squash Doubles Competition in Sept 2011. Eight KGNS players entered the tournament to form four pairs as they competed for the Tunku Naquiyuddin Cup 2011. The players played well and one of the pairs made it to the final before losing to a Singaporean team.

In October, KGNS took on the S.M.K (L) Bukit Bintang squash team in a friendly match held at KGNS. The school team, better known as BMen, is made up of their students who has been playing regularly on the squash circuit. KGNS got an upper hand over BMen and eventually won the game 7-3.

KGNS also hosted another friendly match with the Royal Klang Club. KGNS edged the host 4-3 in the first match before beating them 5-2 in the second.

KGNS Staff Annual Dinner 2011

In its tradition, KGNS held its 2011 Staff Annual Dinner Party on 5 December to recognize the

hard work and commitment given by its staff. Some 160, including guests and several members

of the Management Committee, enjoyed the evening with all dressed to the theme of “Red and

Black Magical Night”.

The highlight of the night was the competition for Best Dressed Lady and Gentleman, which

was won by Sarah and Abdul Razak, and Suhaila and Siti Radziah being honoured with the Most

Outstanding Personality Awards.

Winners of the staff’s sports & recreation events held earlier in the year, which included golf,

bowling, badminton and karaoke competitions, also received their prizes.

Everybody enjoyed themselves, as they were treated to a buffet spread while being entertained

by a magic show by Hafidz Osman. To make sure the staff did not go home empty handed many

Lucky Draw prizes were given out.

Thank you to all the KGNS members and Business Partners who contributed generously in

making this event a success. Last but not least, special thanks goes to the judges of the karaoke

competition and to our Working Committee for making the occasion a night to remember.

MEMORIES OF KGNS

the rubber trees that originally covered the present grounds since that was what Ladang Seaport was before the land was acquired for the Club.

Initially, membership was opened only to civil servants. But those were the days when golf was a very strange “orang putih” game and initial response was poor despite the “promotional” offer – joining members may opt to pay the $500 joining fee by interest-free installment. Soon, the decision was made to open up membership to non-civil servants. The then 27-hole golf club opened its doors in

(There is a little story about this opening ceremony and other historical insights in the “A Look into the Past” article posted in the KGNS official website www.subanggolf.com). At that time, the Minangkabau clubhouse was still work-in-progress so the former Ladang Seaport Manager’s bungalow house (located on the hill overlooking the present Kelana Hole # 13 Par 3) served as a temporary clubhouse. Amenities then were pretty basic. “Most golfers then headed straight home for their showers after the game” quipped Prof Chan. But the temporary clubhouse did have an eatery which served some good grub, including “Subang Chicken Chop” which Prof Chan fondly recalls.

In the early days, there was no elected Management Committee (MC) to run the club. Tun Dr. Ismail effectively got things organized as he saw fit. He appointed a few key people to get projects & operations going, and he held meetings with this small group a few times a year to monitor progress. Meetings were held mostly in Tun’s (and occasionally the Tunku’s) office. Prof Chan, initially roped in to get the Caddy operations going, recalls the all-business, no-nonsense meetings chaired by Tun Dr. Ismail. Apparently, Tun Dr. Ismail does not suffer fools easily. If you did not perform, he would let you know.

Suspecting that I probably didn’t think looking after Caddy affairs was such a big deal, Prof Chan went to great pains to explain that those days KGNS was literally in the boondocks and miles away from nowhere. Unlike the more established (and centrally-located) RSGC, ensuring a reliable supply of caddies every day required some out-of-the-box thinking. Prof Chan’s initial proposal to buy a bus was shot down immediately. There was just not enough money available to buy the bus and pay for fuel, insurance, driver, etc. He eventually decided to reimburse any caddy who showed up for work but fail to get a caddying job that day, up to 50 sen per day for bus fare. Later he introduced a Caddy’s Fund, built up from a 20-sen deduction from each caddy job. The Fund was initially used to provide financial assistance to caddies for emergency needs such as school text books and ultimately to buy a bus for caddies. To ensure caddies know the basics of the game before they are put to work, he assigned a certain T.P. Yip to organize training for caddies. He recalls one particular fellow who had the makings of a good caddy, but who had one major short coming – he just could not find balls! He was sent for a vision test, and not surprisingly, he failed the test. Hence, a pair of glasses was provided for him. Aside from relative poor earnings and uncertain futures, some caddies were occasionally abused, even physically. Prof Chan recalled an incident where a member slapped a caddy in the face. The member was immediately hauled up and fined $50. Prof Chan’s commented with a chuckle that by comparison, caddies these days make quite a decent living and some even have cars which they drive to work.

A Walk down Memory Lane at KGNS

I had arranged to meet Prof Chan at the club’s Family Terrace eatery at noon. I had last met him over 20 years ago when I took my golf handicap test and he was my assigned tester, so I thought I might recognize him. I didn’t. I had expected to see a frail-looking person, perhaps with a stoop and seriously receding hairline, but instead a tall, almost boyish-

looking, full-crop-of-hair gentlemen walked through the glass door and almost immediately made a beeline to my table. He did not look like the octogenarian that he claimed to be. Initially a bit guarded, Prof Chan soon warmed up to our little chat and with a little prompting, he offered many interesting insights into the early days of KGNS.

Everyone knows Malaysia’s first Prime Minister (YAM Tunku Abdul Rahman al-haj) was the primary “sponsor” for KGNS. If not for the Tunku, there would have been no KGNS, and the hill on which the present clubhouse and the surrounding grounds would now likely be an upmarket gated-and-guarded housing community had it not been for his vision and energy to see the project through.(I had no prior knowledge of the KGNS land issue that was brewing when the first draft of this article was completed!!)

What not many knew (as Prof Chan relates) is that while Tunku mooted the project, most of the behind-the-scenes work to get the club going was by Tun Dr. Ismail. The entire project, including designing and construction of the then 27-hole course and the club house building, was accomplished in a relatively short time. Despite their heavy work schedules, both the Tunku and Tun Ismail had closely monitored the progress of the club to fruition. The story goes that a JKR project engineer (then attached to Universiti Malaya) was sent to Wack Wack Golf Club in Philippines to study and recommend a design for the club house. Unfortunately for the JKR engineer, what he came up with did not go down too well with the Tunku who opted instead for a more local flavor – hence the Minangkabau-style clubhouse which still stands today. Tun Dr. Ismail was pretty hands-on. For example, he personally selected the 600 odd tembusu trees to replace

Shortly after I was tasked to write this article for Berita Subang, I requested a list of

a club. I had expected to see about 50 names, but the list I finally received had over 130 names! I then asked for a short list of about a dozen people who had been active in the service of the club, and would likely have stories to share. From this short list, one of the earliest to agree to meet me was YB Dato Prof Dr. Chan Kai Cheong.

In his years of association with KGNS, Prof Chan had never once held elected office, preferring to emulate his former “boss” Tun Dr. Ismail, serving selflessly and with dedication behind-the-scenes, and always with the interest of KGNS, and its members, at heart.

It was a hot afternoon in late September when Jagdish Chand Bhandari (“Call me JC”) showed up

at the appointed hour in the newly-renovated Poolside Terrace, which seemed remarkably appropriate since this was one of the original clubhouse dining areas that had “survived” from back in early 80’s when I joined the club. Those days it was called the Dog-leg Terrace as the dining area extended along the other part of the “L” where the foot massage rooms are today. The other eateries had since relocated to the

his golfing buddies, Daljeet Singh and Rajalingam S., to join our little chat. All 3

To warm things up, I asked each of them how they first got interested in this orang putih game. It surprised me to learn that all 3 had already been golfing prior to joining KGNS. JC had picked up the game from a former Customs friend whom he played with regularly at the Ayer Keroh Golf Club in Melaka. Shortly after, he joined Kelab Golf Angakat Tentera (KGAT) which was one of the 3 golf courses in KL then (the other two being RSGC and Sentul). When KGNS opened up for membership, JC did not hesitate to sign up. Daljeet was already a member of the Sentul Golf Club before he joined KGNS. Lingam had even a bigger incentive to join KGNS, Before KGNS, he had to travel miles to the (now Royal) Kampung Kuantan Golf Club in Kuala Selangor to play a round.

What was the golf course like those early days? “Lots of rubber trees and tembusu trees” they chorused. Daljeet clearly remembers the tembusu trees were so plentiful then that they formed an almost impenetrable hedge along the sides of

tend to winter and strayed balls invariably ended up being covered under a thick carpet of dead leaves.

All three particularly remembered the bunkers then, which were “mere holes in the ground” – there was no sand! However, the Serangoon greens and cow grass fairways had characterized the course right from day one. Then as is now,

which did not even have a name then but which was (then as is now, even after its upgrade to the present 18-hole Kelana Course) affectionately referred to as the “kiddie course”.

All three remembered the temporary club house, though none could recall much detail, other than it had louvre windows, characteristic of most plantation managers’ homes those days. They could not confirm if it was a one or two storey building or if there were shower facilities, or if the club eatery then was any good. For their meals, they usually adjourn to a nearby shack eatery right by the Shell petrol station on the Federal Highway.

Caddies were scarce then and quite often the Club had to hire a van to pick up boys from the nearly kampungs. If one wishes to engage a caddy, one had to come early and put your name up on the black-board by the caddy hut.

Asked who among the club officials they recall most, they mentioned a number of names including Col Ishak (retired) who had the title of Club Secretary but functioned as the club’s General Manager. The Golf Captain then was Captain Machado, from the Immigration Dept. - “a big guy”! The task of keeping the course in tip-top condition was given to a certain Tom Verity who had the same job at RSGC prior to being poached by the Tunku to join KGNS. All three (as did Prof Chan) had fond memories of the use of agro-waste (provided free-of-charge) from the nearby brewery which not only was excellent fertilizer for the course but it also imparted a somewhat delicious aroma in the air which added to members’ enjoyment of their golfing experience then.

In the early days, the Tunku was a frequent visitor to the club. Initially, most members would stand up out of respect whenever he walks into the clubhouse, but he would quickly ask they dispense with that formality with a “Duduk! Duduk! Ini Kelab!! Understandably, Tunku sightings became

JC recalls the overall atmosphere then (as now) was very “friendly and informal”. He is thankful that he had opted then to join KGNS over the choice of another premier golf club in town which he thinks is a little more “snooty”.

I was very keen to talk to my final guest, YM Prof Tengku Dato Shamsul Bahrin.

Club President not once, not twice, but

and 2004-2006. But Tengku proved to be a difficult man to catch. Not surprising since he still golfs regularly (not only in KGNS, but also in RSGC and other clubs). Plus, he has a major business to run,

being the President of the Nilai University College. So when he agreed to see me one October day at 5.30 pm after his usual Tuesday round with the boys, I immediately said yes. That afternoon the weather was less than cooperative and Tengku’s game was inadvertently delayed. The gentleman he is, Tengku called several times to let me know he will be late and that I could “opt out” if I wish. When Tengku finally showed up, the sun had set. Nevertheless, my long wait was well-rewarded as the Tengku had some really interesting stories to share.

and moved on to serve as Club Captain, VP and finally as President for several terms. During those years, he had the opportunity to rub shoulders with many VIP’s and VVIP’s. He recalled during the early years, both Tun Abdul Razak and Tun Hussein Onn golfed at KGNS. In fact while an MC member, he was occasionally roped in to join Tun Hussein’s Saturday afternoon foursome. Tengku was Club Captain when Tun Musa Hitam was President, but he mused (no pun intended) that Musa did not play much

strike action due to a labour dispute, the then Club President (Tun Hussein Onn) had his meals served by MC members!

Because the Tengku had served many years in elected office at KGNS, including as President, I thought I should ask him what he would consider his most significant accomplishments. I had expected him to talk about the installation of the automatic water sprinkler system, the first for any golf course in Malaysia, or perhaps how an MC crisis, precipitated by over-spending for the new Kelana Course, was averted. He pondered the question for a moment before replying, “You know, the biggest challenge was to manage the VVIP’s.” He shared two stories.

One year, the MC had decided to close the entire Putra Course for a week in preparation for the Malaysian Open, which was then (and still is) the premier golfing event in Malaysia. Shortly after, the MC received a request from one VVIP (through an aide) that he would like to play a round during that week. Tengku told the aide that he could of course play, but just remember the grass is not cut and there are no flags on the green. Thankfully, that VVIP got the hint and decided not to come.

In another incident, another VVIP was invited to play at the pro-am competition preceding another Malaysian Open event. At the end of that day, he inexplicably declared that his team was the winner, even though it was clear from the returned score-cards that that was not the case! Ultimately, Tengku managed to convince the primary event sponsor to pay for another champion prize, which was duly (and quietly) delivered to that VVIP’s home. The “real” prize was given out at the official closing event.

This writer wishes to thank all his guests for agreeing to share their memories

and stories with our readers. Unfortunately, none of them had photos of the old days,

including that of the old temporary club house. Berita Subang wish to appeal to anyone

having such photos to send them in, either in hardcopy or digital form or contact me

at [email protected].
