After lunch, depart for Oudomxay. On the way, it is possible to observe the local rural life and markets along the side of the road, enjoy clear views over corn and banana plantations and take in outstanding panorama’s over the surrounding mountains. After breakfast, depart for Phongsaly. The road is in good condition and follows the undulations of the mountain. Discover the beautiful natural landscapes, banana plantations, and rural life in the villages that lie beside the road. Stop off along the way to take some pictures so that the memories may be relived long after getting home. Stop at Ban Bountai around 12:30 and enjoy a delicious picnic lunch. It is possible to also pay a visit the local market. Continue to Phongsaly for about 4 hours. Arriving around 16:30, check-in at  the hotel. Phou Fa Hotel is the former Chinese consulate and the best hotel in town. After checking in, explore the streets of Phongsaly and learn about the town as our guide shares thier unrivalled local knowledge. The narrow paved streets lined with traditional wooden Chinese houses give the town a unique charm. Uncover the history and culture of this multicultural city by guided tour and discover the harmony that exists between the Lao people and the Chinese immigrants. It is also possible to visit a Chinese temple where a stunning view may be enjoyed over a small pond and Phongsaly itself. Today, unveil everything ‘green’ about Phongsaly, discovering the evergreen forest, the local green tea and the unique green Lao whiskey. After breakfast, follow a track from Phongsaly and admire the stunning views stretching over endless mountains. After 3-4 hours, have lunch in a whiskey-producing Phunoy village and sample your first green whiskey!Enter the jungle forest on an adventurous path that climbs up into the mountains. After walking through tea plantations, reach the mountain ridge offering a stunning 360-degree view (as far as China to the west and Vietnam to the east on a clear day!). Continue on a small jungle path and reach the top of the Phu Fa Mountain (1625m – 400 steps) overlooking Phongsaly Town. Enjoy the relaxed descent to the town through the forest. The rest of the day is free at leisure.Overnight in Phongsaly

Distance and journey time:Boun Neua – Phongsaly (42 km): 1 hourTrek: 6 hours – Level: easy to moderateDAY 4 - PHONGSALY - 400 YEARS OLD TEA PLANTATION - MUANG KHUA (B,D)After breakfast in town, visit the famous 400-year-old tea plantation, located in the village of Ban Komaen, about 30 minutes south from Phongsaly. According to some tea experts, this village has some of the oldest tea trees in the world. The large root system of the old trees extends deep into the mineral-rich soil and gives ‘Phongsaly Tea’ its specific aroma and taste. The oldest trees stand 6m high with a stem up to 30cm in diameter. They are regularly cut and and maintained at a reasonable size by Phunoy people, climbing to pick the precious leaves. They then process and sell this rare tea in cigar-shaped tubes.

The road to Ban Komaen passes through more tea plantations and offers a stunning view over Phongsaly and the surrounding mountains. In the village a newly built tea-tasting shop serves some tasty treats but more significantly, sells 400-year-old tea, a superb souvenir. Before leaving, pay a visit to the local temple and witness its characteristic Buddha statue.After the visit, drive to Muang Khua for about 4 hours. Stop en route to have lunch in a local restaurant (not included). Arrive in Muang Khua and check-in at  the hotel. A dinner is included at Sayphoun restaurant, offering stunning views over Nam Ou River.Overnight in Muang Khua Distance and journey time:Phongsali – Ban Komaen: 30 minBan Komaen – Muang Khua: 4 hours

DAY 5 - MUANG KHUA - MUANG NGOI - TREKKING (B)

 After breakfast at Sayphoun restaurant, board a private long tail boat for a cruise down one of the most scenically beautiful stretches of river in Laos. Compared to the Mekong, the Nam Ou is considered more dramatic and wild and also has far less traffic. Arrive in Muang Ngoi in time for lunch and check-in at  the hotel. After lunch, enjoy a soft trekking tour to experience the unspoiled nature, and stunning mountain landscape around Muang Ngoi. At 1:30pm, the guide will meet guests at the hotel ready to begin a soft trekking tour lasting 30 minutes to visit Tham Kaang, the former cave used for sheltering local villagers during the Indochina war (1960-1972). It has never been damaged and offers a striking glimpse into the past as well as the stunning natural surroundings.After visiting the cave, continue walking another 30 minutes through rice fields to reach Ban Na, a village of the T'ai Deng ethnic group. working and living conditions, return to Muang Ngoi. On the way back to Muang Ngoi enjoy some breathtaking vistas. Arrive in Muang Ngoi at about 16:30.The rest of the day is free at leisure. Don’t miss the sunset on the river from  the hotel balcony!Overnight in Muang Ngoi Distance and journey time:Muang Khua – Muang Ngoi by boat: 4-5 hours DAY 6 - MUANG NGOI - NONG KHIAW - LUANG PRABANG - DEPARTURE (B)

After breakfast, embark on a boat for a 45 minute journey to Nong Khiaw, famed for the dramatic limestone mountains which surround it.Upon arrival in Nong Khiaw, transfer back to Luang Prabang with the guide and driver, the journey takes approximately 2.5 hours.A transfer to the airport is included for onward flights. Distance and journey time:Muang Ngoi – Nong Khiaw by boat: 45 minNong Khiaw – Luang Prabang (134 km): 2,5-3 hour
