PART n NAHRA;TIVE SUMMARY
Ao GENERAL (S) During the first three days of May, BLT 3/26 was engaged in Operation ttOklahoma H:Ulstt. As of the last day BLT 3/26 participated in the operation, the BLT had accounted for a total of 140 VC/NVA KIA, 54 IWC, 19 CSWC, 4 122mm rocket launchers, large quantities of ammunition and miscellaneous 782 gear and clothing. The BLT suffered only minimal losses in both men and equipmento
On 3 May, the BLT amphibiously backloaded aboard ARG shipping and began a period of rehabilitation of troops and equipment which continued through to the end of the month. Liaison and coordination was made through the individual ships' operation officers in planning and scheduling an intensive training program for all embarked Marines which included lecture and applicatioP classes, physical training and administrative time., The high degree of cooperation experienced in working with the Navy personnel allowed full utilization of this unusual amount of available time aboard ARG shipping for training ..
Serving throughout this period as amphibious reserve for III MAF, the BLT twice demonstratea its measure of readiness and internal coordination by being fully prepared to land all units within 24 hours notice and failing to do so only because of last moment car1ce1lation of the operations. The first operation schedulea was on Hour Glass Island in Quang Hgai province with D-Day set for 12 May 69 o The second operation scheduled was in an AOA south of the Cua Viet river and west of Wunder Beach in Quang Tri province with D-Day set for 26 May 69. All preparations were made including operation orders, logistic plans, briefing and pre H&L ~Hour transfers completed and the BLT was ready to land on both occasions, only to have each operation cancelled by III MAF at the last minute. On 6 May 1969, an amphibious training exercise was conducted on beaches in the Da Nang area landing two companies by helicopter and two by LVTP5 1s and LCM6 1s.,
Two awards cremonies were held during the wonth for 30 members of HMM-164 and BLT 3/26o On 17 May 1969, Brig. General John E .. WILLIAMS, CG, 9th MAB made presentations of awards including 1 Silver Star, 1 DFC, and 5 Bronze Starso Nine days later on 26 May 1969, the Secretary of the Navy, the Honorable J. H. Chafee visited aboard USS Valley Forge while on an Asian tour., He presented decorations to 12 Marines.
B., ADMINISTRATION (C) During the period 1-3 May 1969, administrative elements of the BLT were located at Camp Muir, Hill 55: this included ncn Btry 1/13 -rear, "W" Btry 1/13 rear, battalion S-1, battalion S-2 rear, battalion S-3 rear, battalion S-4, BAS administration , company offices, disbursing, supply and LSL. On 4 May 1969, all administrative units displaced to _.ARG shipping.

1. Enem.t Situation: Enemy forces in the BLT 3/26 nOklahoma. Hills" AO were estimated at 700 NVA of the 14lst Reg. and 5~0 NVA of the 36SB Artillery Regiment.. '
2. Enem.y Mission: The enemy mission in the AO was to defend the headquarters of the l4lst Regiment at all costs and evade contact in the outlying areas. After sufficient· time had passed for the enemy to move some of his equipment and documents, his mission became one of eva.tion and harassment of allied forces.
3. Weather~ The ma.xim.um temperature for this period was 90 degrees. The low was 70 degrees an4 the mean temperature was ~0 degrees. The relative humidity was 75 degrees and the precipitation totaled 2 inches.
4.. Terraing The terrain in the operation area. was one of double canop,r forest with heavy brush, extremely steep mountains broken with deep draws and intermediate streams in each draw.

7. Su.mma.rzg The above intelligence related to the BLT until 3 May 1969. From 4 May 1969 through 31 May 1969, the BLT was embarked aboard J.RG shipping servingas III MAF reserve and no operations or amphibious landings were conducted. Intelligence estimates are prepared for the two operations that were cancelled.
Do Civic Action (C) There was no civic action conducted during this period.
E. Psychological Operations (C) Chieu Hoi broadcasts were conducted for a period of four days during Operation "Oklahoma. Hills 11 at FSB Rattlesnake. Results were negative.

F. Fire Support: (S) During the month, supporting arms were used only from 1-3 Yay 1969. Special emphasis was given to day and night H&I fires. (1) Air support was requested by the BLT FAC/ALO through 7th Ma.rines. (2) During the month of May:

(d) 3 over-flights of the AO were utilized
Ho Logistics (C)
(1) Logistical support was satisfactory. Transportation during the period 1-3 May was provided by helicopters operating from the LSA located at Camp Muir to field units in the Worth and Charlie Ridge area. From 4-31 May transportation was provided by HMM-164.
(2) Maintenance support wa:s provided by normal Marine Corps support facilities loccited at Da Nang. No unusual maintenance problems were encountered.,
Io Communication (S)
(1) During the period 1 May 1969 through 3 May 1969 8 the communication platoon continuee to maintain'the normal communications established in support of operation "Oklahoma Hillslt o
(2) Upon boarding ARG shipping on 4 May 1969, SLF 11 Bn assumed the communication/crypto guard for BLT 3/26. The BLT communication center was established in the SLF S-1 office and continued to be the facility controlling both incoming and ou~going mesciage traffic. External comnrunication was provided by the SLF communiction center while courier service was provided by BLT message center personnel.
(3) Ship board time was used for inventory of communiatdon equipment preforming preventive maintenance and reorder of lost or damaged equipment. In addition a training schedule waa followed whcih included approximately four hours of general military subjects and two hours of MOS training per week.

J. Medical-Dental (C)
1. Personnel: The Battalion Aid Station had a total of 53 enlisted and 2 medical officerso In addition, the medical section had 4 Shore Party corpsmen under direct supervision of the BAS. Also attached were 10 other hoepital corpsmen from the various attachments. ·
2o Capgbilities: Aboard ship, the ordinary capabilities of the medical d~part.ment were augmented by the ship's assests, including X-ray, laboratory,
'Pharmacy 9 ward and operating room facilities. Surgical Team Bravo was available for general surgical and orthepedia assistance. These clean and sophisticated facilities enabled the BAS to care for a great majority of the medical and surgical problems. One battalion :Sm'g.ecm was deployed on the USS Paul Revere because of the large number of Marines aboard. Consultations were available aboard the USS Valley Forge for Marines embarked aboard other ships in the Ready Group. Special problems and complicated cases were referred to NSA hospital or the hospital shipso
.3. Training: Aboard ship corpsmen received on the job training directly from the medical officer. Corpsmen-:carried out their own lectures on buddy aid~ first aid and persona! hygiene to their troops. Indoctrination lectures were given to all new troops.
4o Dentalg The USS Valley Forge and the USS Paul Revere both had dental. facilities available. A large amount of dental work was done.
5o Malaria o h lasis: Accomplished by daily dosages of Dapsene and a weekly dose of Chloroquine Primaq.uin to all troops.
6. Sanitation: General cleanliness and sanitation in all BLT spaces aboard the ships was inspected by the BAS. A weekly inspection was conducted.

BLT 3/26 (-) (Rein) completed preparations for an operation south of the CUA Viet River and west of Wunder Beach in Quang Tri province. The operation was cancelled ')y III MAF 14 hours prior to H&L-Hour.
