That Speaker was, asindicated above, Nathaniel Maoon, of KowthCarolina. The inquiries by the North Caro-lina members for his portrait brought tolight the fact that he had steadily refusedduring his life time to have a picturehimself made. It Is said indeed thathad such peculiar notions on this subjectthat he became very, indignant at one timeon discovering that an artist was tryingmake a sketch of him as be sat in <Speaker's chair, and immediately tcmeasures to have the sketoh summarily itroyed, which was done.
