We invite active seniors and younger adults with morning availability to join in with a commitment of 2-hour shifts. Please contact Bonnie Kaplan (916)205-8794 to reserve a place for basic training to volunteer in The Kesher Cafe Gift Shop. Training has been scheduled to meet in the Gift Shop on Thursday, August 1 at 10am. Dawn Maurer will welcome, provide easy training and a vision of what’s to come. Please respond and join in! This project will strengthen the financial goals of the Mosaic Law Sisterhood, thereby assisting overall congregational needs, while connecting to real and lasting friendships.

KOH Film Club: Trezoros: The Lost Jews of Kastoria - Sunday, August 4 at 2pm. Co-Sponsored by Central Valley Holocaust Educators Network (CVHEN). Using never-before-seen pre-war archival footage and first-person testimonies, TREZOROS: THE LOST JEWS OF KASTORIA chronicles the Jewish life and culture of Kastoria, a picturesque lakeside village in the mountains of Northwestern Greece, near the Albania border. Here, Jews and Greek Orthodox Christians lived together in harmony for more than two millennia until World War II, when this long and rich history would be wiped out in the blink of an eye. TREZOROS (the Ladino/Judeo-Spanish term of endearment meaning “Treasures”) takes us-from the joyful innocence of the pre-war years through the heartbreaking struggles of the Holocaust, to a unique place in time and history of a Greek Jewish culture lost forever. Following the film there will be a discussion led by Esther Gaines. Open to the entire com-munity. There is a suggested $5 donation. For more information contact Mehrnaz Halimi at [email protected] or 916-508-4571.

KOH Book Club Discussion Group: Button Man by Andrew Gross - Wednesday, August 21 at 1:30pm. Morris, Sol, and Harry Rabinowitz grew up poor but happy in a tiny flat on the Lower East Side, until the death of their father thrust them into having to fend for themselves and support their large family. Morris apprenticed himself at twelve years old to a garment cutter in a clothing factory; Sol headed to college and became an accountant; and Harry, the youngest, fell in with a gang as a teenager and can’t escape. Morris steadily climbs through the ranks at the factory until he’s running the place and buys out the owner, and Sol comes to work with him. But Harry can’t be lured away from the glamour, the power, and the money that comes from working for mobster Louis Buchalter, an old bully from the neighborhood. And when Louis sets his sights on the unions that staff the garment makers’ factories, a fatal showdown is inevitable, and puts brother against brother. This new novel is equal parts historical thriller, rich with the detail of a vibrant New York City in the 1920s and 1930s, and family saga, based in part on Andrew Gross’s family history, and will cement his reputation as today’s most atmospheric and original historical thriller writer.Everyone is welcome, including drop-ins. For more information contact Valla Hoffman at 916-743-8247 or [email protected].
