Alberto Giacometti is widely regarded as one of the most

important and distinctive artists of the twentieth century.

A restless innovator, he explored a range of styles and

subjects; however portraiture remained a continuous

preoccupation.

This major exhibition is the first to focus on Giacometti’s

portraits and spans his entire career. The show includes

important paintings, sculpture and drawings within

sections devoted to each of his principal models, and

illuminates Giacometti’s obsessive evocation of a human

presence.

Floor 2 Room 5Van Dyck: Transforming British Art

Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599 – 1641) was the most

influential portrait painter ever to work in Britain. This

display looks at the artist’s work and how he

transformed British portraiture. Comprising portraits from

the Gallery’s own Collection, supplemented by two

rarely-seen paintings of King Charles I and Henrietta

Maria from Chequers, the self-portrait is set alongside

other works by the artist, paintings from his studio and

portraits by his contemporaries and followers.

Across the GallerySimon Schama’s Face of Britain

Historian Simon Schama has joined with National

Portrait Gallery curators to take a fresh look at the

Collection and present a cross-period exploration of the

history of Britain through portraiture. Focusing on the

themes of Power, Love, Fame, Self and People, he asks

what makes a successful portrait and what this tells us

about the individual and collective psyche of the time.

Simon Schama’s accompanying five-part BBC series,

with an associated book published by Viking Penguin, is

broadcast this autumn.

From 16 September

Floor 0 Room 37 and 37aCreative Connections: Camden Radical Characters
