I also let the students know that there were several idioms within the story and they only needed to locate three of them.

The students were then told to reading the story. The story “Seventh Grade” which can be found on pages 290-295 of the text and the story “Melting Pot” can be found on pages 296-300 of the text.

Today, the children worked on enhancing their essay by adding the following items: 1. Parts of the plot need to be mentioned at least two times. Example: In the exposition, we learned that one of the most difficult things to do is to frighten a mongoose. 2. The terms antagonist and protagonist need to appear within their essay. 3. They must have a sentence that contains a semicolon making a complex sentence. 4. Another sentence must begin with a subordinate clause. For example, if your sentence reads, Nagaina tells Nag to go in and kill “the big man” first when the house is quiet. The students can switch their sentence around and put their subordinate clause first making their sentence read as follows: When the house is quiet, Nagaina tells Nag to go in and kill “the big man” first. 5. We learned about the meanings of the following word roots: -viv-, -vit-, -man-, -manu-, and –dict-. The students should know what each of these word roots mean. We worked Lesson 1: Dear Works & Dead Verbs. The purpose of this lesson is to identify boring, non-descriptive verbs that should never be used in academic writings. I told the children that they need to practice using strong verbs in their writing. The children then copied down better words for each verb that is non-descriptive. For example, we “buried” the word bad and replaced it with the following words: awful, rotten, mean, wicked, nasty, wretched, etc.

We also touched on a hyperbole that was in the “Reading Warm-up A.” We did a lot more with hyperboles during grammar.

The children and I read text page 49 and we discussed narrative text and how we determine if text is written in the first person. We analyzed what was happening to the narrator in brief passages from the upcoming text. The children completed ditto p. 75 and we checked it in class.







We discussed possessive nouns by reading through text page 68. The students and I discussed hyperboles and read the top of text page 69 together as a class. We discussed

Today was school picture day, so we smiled for the camera!!! The children began their class time silently reading from a book of their choice. All

students who read received participation points for their efforts. We read over the “Word Study” on page 24 and we discussed the importance of suffixes

and prefixes. The children were given handouts to help them with suffixes and prefixes throughout the year.

children learned that context clues are used to unlock the meanings of unfamiliar words. The students learned about three different types of context clues: restatement, opposite or contrast, and example.

The children and I discussed narrative text and how it always has a chronological order. I told the children that they would need to read “Papa’s Parrot” carefully and be prepared to put it in chronological order.

The children were given the page 30 & 31 “Vocabulary Warm-up Exercise” for “Papa’s Parrot” and they were asked to complete it and enter their answers on their clickers.

We read and discussed text pages 6-7 together as a class. We reviewed the many differences between fiction and nonfiction.

I asked the children to complete “Reading Kit” p. 11 entitled “Literary Analysis: Fiction and Nonfiction” and then we discussed it in class.

Next, the children were asked to complete page 9 entitled “Learning About Fiction and Nonfiction” and page 10 entitled “Literary Analysis: Fiction and Nonfiction” on the Smart Response clickers. This was their assignment for today.

The children were given a paper that explains fiction writing and I told them to put it somewhere where they would not lose it because this material would be on their final.

We worked a page together entitled “Reading Warm-up A p. 15. It contains the vocabulary the children will encounter over the story “The Three-Century Woman.”

HOMEWORK: We worked page 14 entitled “Vocabulary Warm-up Exercises for: The Three-Century Woman” and “The Fall of the Hindenburg” together as a class. Absent students will need to complete this page and turn it in to me.

We put the bell work in binders and I explained how to complete bell work according to my expectations. The students completed the Week 1 Day 4 Bell Word and they were given point for this in class assignment.

The students were given the rules for commas page. They were to cut it out and glue it into their “Grammar Notebook” on p. 5 and then write p. 5 – Rules for commas on their “Table of Contents” page.

The students were given the practice page for commas and we finished correcting sentences using our new rules about commas. The students were to glue this practice page on page 6.

I explained how to color for the Parts of Speech Song page. We discussed lesson 1-1 on the hard and fast rules of capitalization and the children added the rules to their

“Grammar Notebooks” on page 3 and we worked a practice page together on capitalization using the new rules we just learned and we put this on page 4.

HOMEWORK: The children need to finish their page on the hard and fast rules for capitalization if they did not get them completed in class.

Today we listened to Weird Al Yankovic on YouTube – Word Crimes at https://www.vevo.com/watch/weird-al-yankovic/word-crimes/USRV81400343 It is a great video about grammar and how to use it properly.

I gave the children a paper with song lyrics on it to the song “Parts of Speech.” We filled it out together and I had the student color the parts of speech that corresponded to the ones on page 1. The children were to glue the song on page 2 and write, “p. 2 – Parts of Speech song on The Table of Contents page.

I told the students that they needed all of their supplies for my classroom by Monday. I also reminded them that they need to bring a library book to class on Monday.

I collected any new supplies like binders and composition books. Students put their names on the edge of the binder and on the composition books in permanent marker and I passed our papers for their binders

We completed a paper that helped the students understand how they learn best. The paper was entitled “What’s Your Learning Style?” Please take a look at this paper. It may help you learn how your child retains information best.

Students were reminded to create a folder under their “Favorites” and entitle the folder 7th Grade. I reminded the students to retrieve their binders and begin their bell work as soon as they enter my classroom on Monday.

The students and I went over parts of speech which include the following: nouns, verbs, adjective, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections. I refer to this lesson as Lesson 0.5: Parts of Speech. We added this information to one of our composition notebook.

Collect Kleenexes and Supplies (First hour only.) Collect any new supplies like binders and composition books. Make sure to have students put their

The children learned how to utilize the Smart Board to do their attendance. Students learned that each day they will sit down and begin literature by reading from a book of their choice.

They will be given points for reading every day in class. If students do not read during this time they will not receive points. Students must read outside the class this year as they will be required to get 20 AR points a quarter.

The students were given the A.R. requirement sheet and they were told to have their parent sign the form and return it to me tomorrow.

I introduced myself and told the children a little bit about what to expect from me as their teacher. We collected Kleenex boxes. Each student was given a classroom syllabus and we went over it on the Smart board. Students were given a pass handout for literature and grammar. I explained how to utilize the passes

handouts and how they could earn extra credit. We went over the late work policy and I explain how to turn in late work. The children and I went over the

form that needs to be filled out when they have late work. I passed out a supply list and asked student to have binders here by tomorrow if possible. Students will be

adding materials to their binders tomorrow. Students learned where to turn in work and find absent work as well as how to check my board for
