Course Description课程介绍This course is a beginning level course (II). You will obtain a basic foundation in listening 听, speaking 说, reading 读, and writing 写. You will participate in listening, speaking, reading, writing exercises, complete grammar exercises and learn dialogues of progressive length and complexity. Besides Integrated Chinese textbooks and workbooks, this course will also incorporate materials such as beginning-level picture books, simple news, songs, poems, tongue twisters, jokes, movies may be added to help you learn the Chinese language. You will also gain Chinese cultural knowledge and an international perspective.

Pre-requisites: Beginning Chinese I—Novice Low 初级中文 I

Learning Objectives 学习目标By the end of this course, you will be able to use Chinese to: 

Ask and answer questions in conversation on common topics such as someone’s profession.

Tell and speak about time and dates; Talk about someone’s age and birthday. Perform such tasks as inviting someone to dinner, arranging a dinner date,

inquiring what food the other likes to eat. Say basic personal hobbies; ask about someone’s hobbies; ask friends out to see a

movie; set up plans for the weekend.

Asking for beverages as a guest or offering beverages to visitors, asking for a favor, asking about what a person did (past events) or will do (future events).

Perform such tasks as welcoming a guest to your house, introducing one person to another.

By the end of this course, you will be able to read Chinese to: Decode signs, simple drink menus, calendar, and simple words that relate to daily

tasks. Recognize new characters and vocabulary around course themes in dialogues and

short pieces of text. Comprehend the dialogues in the textbook and translate the main ideas in reading

passages and puzzle out simple messages, personal notes, short narratives

By the end of this course, you will be able to acquire the following writing skills in Chinese:

Write the name of different professions, basic personal hobbies, days of week, months, drinks, and foods.

Write a profile about oneself, including one’s age, nationality, family, profession and personal hobbies.

Write a dinner invitation. Write a birthday card to someone

By the end of this course, you will also learn about Chinese cultural topics with reference to specific themes covered in class.

You can expect regular supplementary materials in addition to the textbook. Keep a journal--Bring a spiral-bound notebook for this class. Bring this notebook

to every class. This journal will be collected during the mid-term and final exam for participation grades.

Have a binder to keep all returned HW, in-class work, quizzes, and tests. (Keep them to study for your mid-term/final exam; they can also be used for proof of work if there is any dispute concerning a grade).

o One lesson has two dialogues/parts. Each dialogue has one vocabulary list. We have a vocabulary quiz for each dialogue and one test for each lesson. Each dialogue has character sheets and workbook assignments to be collected as homework.

Evaluation You will be assessed on the following:

Oral Performances: We will have one oral performance for each dialogue; that means two oral performances for one lesson. An assignment sheet will be given for each oral performance task and a separate rubric sheet will be given for self-evaluation. You will work together with a partner to come up with a script and perform WITHOUT READING the script in class. Each participant will need to turn in the self-evaluation form as well as the entire written script written by each participant. Some oral performance may be presentational and done without a partner.

Assignments: All homework and assignments should be turned in on time at the beginning of class. Do not use class time to write homework assignments; violation of this rule will require you to redo the entire homework. Turn in after class is considered late. Late homework and assignments will receive a reduced grade. 10% if one day late, 20% if two days late, and so on. An assignment turns in more than 10 days will result in 0 credits.

In-class work will be collected and given credit by the instructor. If you miss classes, you will miss credits for the in-class work and cannot be made up unless you are officially excused.

Quizzes: These are quizzes on the vocabulary list from each dialogue. These quizzes include flash card quizzes and written quizzes (dictation) for each dialogue (There are two dialogues in each lesson). The lowest score will be dropped.

Tests: We will have a test after learning each lesson.

Final Exam: It will be a comprehensive exam. This final exam has two sections: The Oral Section (30%) and Written Section (70%).

Final Project: Instructions/expectations will be distributed separately. You will expect a written instruction sheet and rubrics for the final project during the semester.

Grading Scale

The grading scale for high school courses follows the Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s grading scale of:

A 90.0 - 100.0%B 80.0 - 89.9%C 70.0 - 79.9%D 60.0 - 69.9%F 0.0 - 59.9%

Expectations and Policies

1. Attendance : Attendance is mandatory. You are expected to attend classes on time. If you are late for the class, please go to the office to obtain a late pass before attending the class. Absences without valid reasons and tardiness will affect your participation grade. Unexcused absences will result in 0 grade for in-class work. Regardless of the reason for your absence, it is the individual student's responsibility to find out the assigned homework for that day. Too many absences may result in a failing grade for this class.

2. Participation : I expect all students to participate in classroom activities. Those who pay attention in class and actively participate in class will do better than those who don’t and will receive a good participation grade. If you miss too many classes, you won’t get a good participation grade. Besides class participation, your journal will also be used as part of your participation grade.

3. Makeups . Make-up oral performance/quizzes/tests/exam will only be granted for emergencies or extenuating circumstances. If you know you will be absent on a certain date, you should come to see me and make arrangement ahead of time; otherwise, a make-up should be arranged as soon as possible, if you have an excused absence.

4. Academic integrity . All work at BHSEC Cleveland must be original, used for only one class, and be written by the student being given credit. All work must correctly attribute all citations and sources. Failure to adhere to these standards will results in a zero for the assignment. Subsequent instances of plagiarism will result in an automatic “F” in the class. Please refer to the BHSEC Cleveland Student Contract for the full academic honesty policy for additional details.

Cell Phone Use Policy

Cell phones should be silenced and put away in the bag before class begins. In Chinese class, no one should use a cell phone or any other electronic devices without teacher’s permission.

As per school policy, inappropriate use of cell phones or other electronic devices will result in the device being confiscated. For the first infraction, you can pick up the device from Dr. Williams at the end of the day. Second and third infractions will require a parent, guardian, or caretaker to acquire the device from Dr. Williams.
