President’s MessageDear AHDI Colleagues,

Traveling back home to the DC area from our conference in Latham, NY, I felt the excitement of meeting with long time AHDI friends but also happy to meet so many new people. Our theme “Planning our Next Move” was motivating and our speakers delivered. Speaker line up helped us assess our skills, learn about career opportunities utilizing our current skills, improve our communication skills, and we also learned how to motivate ourselves to attain our goals. We learned more about cyber and ransomware attacks, how to prevent them, and how to respond if it happens. At our conference we rolled out the newly-released AHDI Healthcare Documentation Quality Assessment and Management Best Practices toolkit and the Healthcare Documentation Creation Best Practices Toolkit.

Soon we will start planning our 2018 conference which will be held In Lynchburg, VA. Dates to be determined over the next two months. We need your help. If you live in the Lynchburg area, we need volunteers. Volunteers can do as little or as much as their time allows. It takes a village to raise a child and takes our member volunteers to have a yearly conference. Please feel free to email me at [email protected] Let’s get busy and plan our future together.

The LATEST from LEE ANN

It’s fall, y’all!! Or I probably should say ‘yuns’ but that doesn’t rhyme with ‘fall.’ As some of you may know, ‘yuns’ is a western Pennsylvania (and surrounding areas) word meaning the plural of ‘you,’ our version of ‘y’all.’ The urban dictionary says it is most often used by older generations. So I’ve located myself and dated myself. How about that?

This is my first AHDI-NEMA newsletter as the District 4 Director, and I should introduce myself for those who don’t know me. I started Wilmot Transcription Plus+ in 1998. I’ve been a member of AHDI since 1999, with a meeting of the Ohio Valley chapter in Wheeling, West Virginia. I’m still active with that chapter, though more often meetings are held in Morgantown, WV, because most current members are there. I became active in AHDI-NEMA when the regions were created, and I’ve attended most of the national AHDI conferences since my first one in 2003. Along the way I’ve held offices in the local chapter and region, most recently as president of NEMA in 2015 and 2016.

My goal with these newsletter articles is to keep you updated about AHDI and the National Leadership Board. Please also join the AHDI District 4 group on Facebook if you use that social media as I’ll post there, too.

So here are some items that may be of interest:

Credentialing Exam Retake Policy Change In August 2017, the Credentialing Commission for Healthcare Documentation (CCHD) voted to change the retake policy for both the RHDS and CHDS exams from a 6-month wait time to a 4-month wait time. Candidates who fail their RHDS or CHDS exam may now retake the exam in 4 months (instead of 6). All past, current, and future candidates are eligible under this policy, as of October 1, 2017.

AHDI’s Credentialing Candidate Guide has been updated to reflect this change. Contact us at 800-982-2182 ext. 102 (direct: 209-341-2456) or [email protected] with questions or concerns.

Changes in Leadership

You may already know that the National Leadership Board accepted Linda Brady’s resignation as AHDI’s Chief Executive Officer. Linda’s last day with AHDI will be October 29, 2017. Sheila Guston, CHDS, AHDI-F, was named as AHDI’s Interim CEO on a volunteer basis. Sheila will continue to serve on the NLB as Immediate Past President and At-Large Director. Sheila has extensive senior-level management experience and currently is Manager, HIM Healthcare Documentation Integrity at Spectrum Health System in Grand Rapids, MI. The association is extremely fortunate to have Sheila stepping into this key leadership role. Watch for more information as it develops.

You may also know that Jay Vance, CMT, CHP, AHDI-F, resigned as At-Large Director and President-elect of AHDI's National Leadership Board for personal reasons. The Board approved to fill the At-Large Director vacancy and appointed Joyce Smith, AHDI-F, to the position with a term effective immediately through August 31, 2020. A special election will be held to fill the vacated President-elect position at the Board meeting on October 16, 2017.

The OWLS Academy (Observe, Work, Learn, Succeed) has been developed especially for students and new professionals, but many of the resources are helpful to anyone in healthcare documentation. Created by AHDI's Educators Alliance and staff, it offers free resources to AHDI members. Click here OWLS Academy to find out more.

Two new benefits have been added to your AHDI membership: A free subscription to For The Record magazine. Signing up is easy. Just visit the publisher's

website, select "My subscription is FREE because I am a member of AHDI," and complete the form. You may also access the subscription link anytime by visiting AHDI's Access Your Benefits page (member login required).

Cyber Liability insurance is now available through Mercer Consumer. Visit AHDI's Access Your Benefits (member login required) page, select your membership category, and jump to the "Save" section of benefits for a link to Mercer Consumer.

I look forward to continuing to work with you over the next 3 years. I would love to hear from you with your ideas for our district.

CHAPTER CORNER

The Ohio Valley chapter of AHDI currently has 13 members. At our October 7 meeting, started the process to select new officers for 2018, as well as committee chairs and tentative dates for meetings. We will be holding the annual spring symposium on April 7, 2018, in Morgantown. Details will be posted on the NEMA website under our chapter link as they become available.

Six of the chapter members attended the AHDI-NEMA conference. Those attending were Sonia Allison, Jane Morris Drupieski, Shirley Howard, Marlene Lester, Laura Osborne, and Lee Ann Wilmot. Thanks to those volunteers who organized such a successful meeting. The meeting offered 11.5 credits as well as 1 CM for a Nuance crossword puzzle. We also had our first game of Jeopardy.

If anyone would like to become a member of the chapter, fill out the form on the next page. If you have any questions, please email me at [email protected]. Chapter dues are $10.
