THE ORDER OF MASS

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

All Amen. The Lord be with you.

All And with thy spirit.

All Almighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Page 4:   · Web viewMusic of the Mass. Mass for Five Voices ... to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom;

Our Lord Jesus Christ said: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

All Lord have mercy upon us, and write all these Thy laws in our hearts, we beseech Thee.

O Lord, we beseech thee to keep thy Church and household continually in thy true religion; that they who lean only upon the hope of thy heavenly grace may evermore be defended by thy mighty power; through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen.

¶Old Testament LessonO Ephraim, what shall I do unto thee? O Judah, what shall I do unto thee? for your goodness is as a morning cloud, and as the early dew it goeth away. Therefore have I hewed them by the prophets; I have slain them by the words of my mouth: and thy judgments are as the light that goeth forth. For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.

Hosea 6 v. 4-6

¶Gradual Psalm

The Lord is my strength and my song : and is become my salvation.

The voice of joy and health is in the dwellings of the righteous : the right hand of the Lord bringeth mighty things to pass.

The right hand of the Lord hath the pre-eminence : the right hand of the Lord bringeth mighty things to pass.

I shall not die but live : and declare the works of the Lord.

The Lord hath chastened and corrected me : but he hath not given me over unto death.

Open me the gates of righteousness : that I may go into them and give thanks unto the Lord.

This is the gate of the Lord : the righteous shall enter into it.

I will thank thee for thou hast heard me : and art become my salvation.

Psalm 118.14-21

¶New Testament LessonPut on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

Colossians 3 v. 12-17

¶Gospel Acclamation

The Lord is King the earth may be glad thereof:yea the multitude of the isles may be glad thereof.

The heathen shall fear thy name, O Lord and all the kings of the earth thy majesty. When the Lord shall build up Sion and when his glory shall appear.

¶The Gospel

The Lord be with you:All And with thy spirit.

Hear the Holy Gospel according to Matthew:All Glory be to thee, O Lord.

The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

Matthew 13 v. 24b-30

This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise be to thee, O Christ.

¶IntercessionsThe Sub-deacon leads the congregation in the intercessions for the Church and the world. The response to each bidding is Hear our prayer.¶ConfessionThe Celebrant invites the people to confess their sins, kneeling:

Ye who do truly and earnestly repent you of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbours, and intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from henceforth in his holy ways; Draw near with faith, and take this holy Sacrament to your comfort; and make your humble confession to Almighty God, meekly kneeling upon your knees.

All Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, by thought, word and deed, against thy divine majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us; the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honour and glory of thy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Celebrant pronounces the Absolution

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him; Have mercy upon you; pardon and deliver you

¶Post-Communion Prayer – Please Stand

O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy humble servants entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion. And here we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and lively sacrifice unto thee; humbly beseeching thee, that all we, who are partakers of this holy communion, may be fulfilled with thy grace and heavenly benediction. And although we be unworthy, through our manifold sins, to offer unto thee any sacrifice, yet we beseech thee to accept this our bounden duty and service; not weighing our merits, but pardoning our offences, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father almighty, world without end.

All Amen.

All Almighty God, we thank thee for feeding us with the body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer thee our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of thy Spirit to live and work to thy praise and glory. Amen.

Tongues of Angels? Conformed to Christ by Liturgy, Monday 6:15 in the Hood Room. As we begin the slow turn toward Lent, the Monday evening discussion group will consider how the symbolic meaning of the mass which Fr Mark has discussed over the last number of weeks becomes real and practical for us. One divine describes the Eucharist as ‘the movement that Adam failed to perform, and that in Christ has become the very life of man: a movement of adoration and praise in which all joy and suffering all beauty and all frustration, all hunger and all satisfaction are referred to their ultimate End and become finally meaningful.’  In this sense, 'liturgy' refers not just to worship, but to the whole of Christian life which is given a focus and direction in worship. The topics for the next three weeks will be: 1) 11 Feb, the Problem: A traditional framework for understanding 'spiritual illness', the way to understand and diagnose the problems which prevent us from standing upright in Christ.2) 18 Feb, the Cure: An overview of the cure, the ascetical formation, part of Christ's work of recreation3) 25 Feb, Joy:  The destination of our Christian pilgrimage and its present realityEach week we will look at  stained glass, mosaics, and other works of art to illustrate the theme.

Please do join us for our first Anglican history research seminar of Hilary Term, given by Dr Sarah Ward Clavier, which will be on ‘“The Mountaines did serve for their Refuge”: 1650s Wales as a refuge for Anglican clergy’. The lecture will take place this Thursday,

Recollection Lectures: The third lecture of this term's Recollection series will be given by Andrew Teal, Chaplain, Fellow and Lecturer in Patristic & Modern Teology, Pembroke College. He will speak to us on ‘Bruegel and Incarnation: Seeing Salvation Afresh’. Daily Prayer and Bible Reading: Thy Word is a Lantern Unto My Feet and a Light unto my Paths (Ps 119.105)On the table in the cloister there is a card entitled 'Prayer' which you are welcome to pick up.  It offers a short form of prayer to guide you in your prayers at home and to join them with the daily rhythm of the community at Pusey House. The Bible readings which we use each day are printed above. You can follow these readings at home by choosing one or two each day, perhaps following one of the three paths (Gospel, New Testament letter, or the Old Testament). It's helpful if you choose a pattern that

Page 27:   · Web viewMusic of the Mass. Mass for Five Voices ... to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom;

you can follow rather than setting a rule which does not work for you. Study Bibles, in the form of Apps or books, offer help with difficult passages.
