Notes on this example of an academic plan for the Bachelor of Arts

UM-Flint is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. A UM-Flint Bachelor of Arts degree in Music requires credits beyond the usual 120 hours, meeting the standards of national accreditation.

This is one example of an academic plan for the Bachelor of Arts degree for a full-time student. Variations in scheduling General Education courses are possible; however, the student must consult with his/her advisor regarding all decisions in scheduling.

Previous coursework, AP examination scores, SAT or ACT scores, other college credits or English and Foreign Language placement examinations could modify the example plan.

If a student is required to take remedial coursework (i.e., entering in Mus 392 instead of Mus 151 for the first semester, or placing into Mus 135 instead of Mus 141), then it is unlikely that the student will finish the degree program in four years. Study in the Spring and/or Summer might enable the completion of the degree on time.

If a student fails a required course and must repeat it, then completion of the 4-year academic plan is delayed and could extend beyond four years. Study in the Spring and/or Summer might enable the completion of the degree on time.

Students are encouraged to participate in other ensembles, such as Chamber Singers, Jazz Ensemble, etc.

All academic plans constructed for the Bachelor of Arts degree must be checked against the BA course worksheet. Worksheets are available in the Music office and online. Please read all department documents carefully.

Mus 170, Mus 226, Mus 261, Mus 262, Mus 361, and large ensemble courses will fulfill general education requirements.

Please keep in mind the following requirements:• Required GPA for the degree is 2.0.• 80 Credit hours need to be completed outside major.• Not more than 40 cr. in any one subject may be counted• Not more than 65 cr. in any two subjects may be counted• 33 credits of upper division courses needed (300 level or higher).

All music students are advised by a Department of Music professor – for the entire bachelor’s degree program, not just for music courses. Consult with your advisor frequently in order to avoid making mistakes in your academic plan.
