How Are We Justified By Faith?

The fact that faith justifies is clearly established in the scriptures. Paul wrote, “Therefore being justified by faith...” (Romans 5:1). We need to understand that there are different kinds of faith in the scriptures. There is "great faith" (Matthew 8:10), "weak faith" (Romans 4:19), "faith only" (James 2:24), and "faith working through love" (Galatians 5:6). Brethren, just because a person believes or has "faith" does not necessarily mean that person is saved or justified. There were many chief rulers who believed, but they were not saved (John 12:42, Matthew 10:33). In fact James said, "...the demons also believe and tremble" (James 2:19). Are demons saved?

Faith which justifies is an obedient faith. In the context of discussing "that which avails" or justifies Paul wrote, "...but faith working through love" (Galatians 5:6). Paul said he had received grace and apostleship for or unto "obedience to the faith among all nations..." (Romans 1:5). James wrote: "You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only" (James 2:24). "Faith only" is a dead faith. Saving faith, then, is an active, obedient faith (Hebrews 5:8, 9, chapter 11).

Brethren, an obedient faith is not tantamount to meritorious justification. We have to save ourselves (Acts 2:40), but not in the sense of earning our salvation (Titus 3:5). In fact, this is Paul's subject in Romans 4 – man's justification does not come as a result of "working," that is perfect law keeping. After we have done all commanded of us, we are pronounced right (justified) "by grace" (God's part, his mercy without which there would be no hope); and "through faith" (man's part, his obedience to God's word), Ephesians 2:8.

WOODBRIDGECHURCH OF CHRIST Welcome, Visitors!

How Shall the Young Secure Their HeartsAt an early age, Isaac Watts (1674-1748)

displayed unusual talent in writing poetic verse. As a young man, he became increasingly concerned with the congregational singing in the English speaking churches. Only ponderous metrical psalms were used until this time. To use any words other than the actual words of scripture would have been considered an insult to God.

Challenged by his father to "write something better for us to sing," young Watts began to create new versions of the psalms with inspiring and expressive style, eventually, at the age of 25; he published an important hymnal titled The Psalms of David in the Language of the New Testament.

How Shall the Young Secure Their Hearts isbased on Psalms: 119:9. Favorite hymns:

Can you solve this rebus?

Or how about this one?
