Frameworks for Analyzing Images

The following is a system for dissecting images in order to receive deeper meaning.

Apply these to the images from Chapters 1-4 in order to write brief analytic statements on the back of this sheet.

Contributing Factors:

I. Two-dimensionality -

A. What is the arrangement of the foreground and background?

B. How is the frame used?

C. What perspective is the image presented from? Even, below, or above?

II. Balance -

A. Does empty space or the image dominate the space?

B. Is the primary figure symmetrical or asymmetrical?

C. Are there differences in scale between components?

III. Lines -

A. How would you characterize the weight or heaviness of the artist’s lines?

B. Do the lines give the image a feeling of texture?

C. Are there lines that imply movement?

IV. Setting

V. Imagery

VI. Symbolism

Analytic Inferences:

I. Tone and Mood.

II. Message and Theme

Label portions of the image below for the frameworks above. Which areas of the image correspond to each framework?

For each image below, write a brief analytic state about how two of the frameworks above correspond with the themes and tones of each chapter.
