Pentecost Sunday Holy Communion

25th May 2017 AD

“Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be

tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in

other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. “

Pentecost Sunday

All Saints seeking to be a church of Up, In, and Out.Welcome! Wonderful to see you as we gather to worship! There is a crèche for children aged 0-4. There will be an opportunity to receive anointing of oil as a sign of a desire for personal renewal following the sermon… Our charitable giving box is by the main door.

Welcome everyone!

Pentecost (from the Greek pentekoste, ‘fiftieth’ of fifty days of celebration) has its roots in the Jewish Feast of Weeks, which was completed on the fiftieth day after Passover. On the fiftieth day of Easter, God sends his Holy Spirit to empower the Church to perform the mission which the risen Christ has entrusted to it.

Pentecost celebrates both the Holy Spirit and the Christian Church. It was originally the crown and completion of the Easter season; only later, in the medieval West, did it become a new festival season of its own. After the Easter Vigil, the time of Pentecost was a preferred occasion for baptism in early Christian centuries. Christ’s disciples are born again of water and the spirit.

Ascension and Pentecost are closely linked. The risen Lord is no longer present to the Church in the body of his flesh; the Church is now to be the new body of Christ, filled with his life throughthe gift of the Spirit.

Wonderful to see you and we hope you will enjoy our worship together as we celebrate and adore and praise our incarnate, crucified, risen, ascended Lord who has sent the Spirit to each one of us.

GreetingGrace. mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ with youAll: and also with you.

Allelulia! Christ is risen. All: He is risen indeed. Allelulia!

Words of welcome and introduction by Revd Grant

Opening Hymn

After a prayer, the young children (0-4) leave for the crèche

Jesus Christ, whom we worship, is our crucified, risen and ascended Lordand we have walked with him through his journey of love.We have faced the agony of his suffering and death on a cross. We have rejoiced at his bursting free from the bonds of death. We have enjoyed his risen presence with usand his revelation of himself through the breaking of bread. We have seen his return to the throne before which every knee shall bowand every tongue confess that this Jesus is Lord. And now, with the followers of his own time,we await the coming of the promised Holy Spirit, his gift to his people, through whom we make Christ known to the world.

-NOTICES

Next Sunday – Trinity Sunday – 11th June – 0930 Holy Communion with Sunday School and manned crèche. Also we will commission our new prayer ministry teams and prayer ministry will be available after that service.

Tuesday 6th June – informal worship event led by Paul and Hilary Kyle – 7.30pm start here at Heilige Geest Kerk. They will be sharing how we can encounter God in our daily lives and considering how we pass on the flame of faith to others and to the next generation. Paul is a song writer who wrote, ‘Jesus we enthrone you’. It is a great way to continue our celebrations of God’s Spirit from Pentecost. And it will be a special evening. Do come along.

‘Thy

Kingdom Come.’ Thy Kingdom Come is a global prayer movement, which invites Christians around the world to pray between Ascension and Pentecost for more people to come to know Jesus Christ. What started out as an invitation from the Archbishops’ of Canterbury and York in 2016 to the Church of England has grown into an international and ecumenical call to prayer. We have held two events so far, our third one is:

Thursday 22nd June , 8pm – 9.15pm. Prayer Event. We have been calling a prayer concert – an evening of contemporary worship songs, intermingled with sections of intercession. Our sections of intercessions are run in different ways – some praying out loud, some prayer silently, some praying in small groups, sometimes praying as one group.

Pilgrimage to Taize 7th – 16th July: Today is the final deadline to sign up. Still are plenty of spaces. All young adults (15-29) of the Anglican congregations in Utrecht and Amersfoort are invited. Friends of people within the age group are also welcome to attend the trip. Please contact Angela Berben ([email protected], (0651937672) or Andre van der Werk 06211 58 958, [email protected]. Please speak to Andre or Angela if interested.

New Wine? Saturday 22nd – 28th July in Biddinghuizen (50 minutes away by car). A great week of teaching, sung worship, a variety of speakers on biblical and practical topics. We will be camping together as a church group. Speak to Andre and Ninke, Ron and Nienke, Adrian or Danielle Los, or Grant and Jolanda to know more – as they are going.

Prayers for June 4th ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ invites us to pray for our communities and ourselves. So pray… *that God’s love would direct all our relationships and conversations where we live and work so many would encounter Jesus.* that our homes and our church of All Saints would be places where more people of all ages discover God’s love and mercy.* for those who are vulnerable in Amersfoort, to be reached by God’s love* for the needs of our city and local communities where we live*for boldness for ourselves to share with others the different Jesus has made in our lives* for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit – as in days gone by – on this church and upon us God’s children.

- 9 –CommissionFor fifty days we have celebrated the victory of our Lord Jesus Christ over thepowers of sin and death. We have proclaimed God’s mighty acts and we have prayedthat the power that was at work when God raised Jesus from the dead might be atwork in us.

As part of God’s Church here in Amersfoort, I call upon you to live out what you proclaim.

Empowered by the Holy Spirit, will you dare to walk into God’s future, trusting him to be your guide? All By the Spirit’s power, we will.

Will you dare to embrace each other and grow together in love? All By the Spirit’s power ,we will.

Will you dare to share your riches in common and minister to each other in need? All By the Spirit’s power , we will.

Will you dare to pray for each other until your hearts beat with the longings of God?All By the Spirit’s power, we will.

Will you dare to carry the light of Christ into the world’s dark places? All By the Spirit’s power, we will.

ConclusionThe Lord is here. All His Spirit is with us.

Today we have remembered the coming of God’s power on the disciples and weinvite that same Spirit to drive us out into the wild places of our communities, country and world.

May the Spirit, who hovered over the waters when the world was created, breathe into you the life he gives.

May the Spirit, who overshadowed the Virgin Mary when the eternal Son came among us,make you joyful in the service of the Lord.

May the Spirit, who set the Church on fire upon the Day of Pentecost, bring our country and the world alive with the love of the risen Christ.

And the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,be among you and remain with you always. All Amen.

Filled with the Spirit’s power,go in the peace to love and serve the Lord. Alleluia, alleluia.

All: In the name of Christ. Alleluia, alleluia.

- 2 –We hear the Pentecost Reading…

The Pentecost Reading: Acts 2:1-21

2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: ‘Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs – we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!’ 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, ‘What does this mean?’

13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, ‘They have had too much wine.’

14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: ‘Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

17 ‘“In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.19 I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke.20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

The reader says:The Lord is here All: His Spirit is with us.

- 3 –

Let us stand and give glory to the Father and Son who have sent us the Spirit, the giver of life…

Gloria in Excelsis (we stand)

All Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth.Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father,we worship you,we give you thanks,we praise you for your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,Lord God, Lamb of God,you take away the sin of the world:have mercy on us;you are seated at the right hand of the Father:receive our prayer.

For you alone are the Holy One,you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,in the glory of God the Father.Amen.

The Collect (we remain standing)Let us pray that the Spirit will work through our livesto bring Christ to the world.

Silent prayer – we bring to God our thanksgivings, our needs, we invite him to speak to us, to transform and shape us in this service of worship, we invite him to fill us afresh with the Holy Spirit.

…Before Revd Grant prays the Collect Prayer to which all respond. Amen

Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:3b-133 Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, ‘Jesus be cursed,’ and no one can say, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ except by the Holy Spirit.4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of

tongues.11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

- 8 -Post Communion Hymn.

Post Communion Prayer Faithful God,who fulfilled the promises of Easterby sending us your Holy Spiritand opening to every race and nationthe way of life eternal:open our lips by your Spirit, that every tongue may tell of your glory;through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen.

Eucharistic Prayer H (page 204 in the black prayer book).

At All Saints, all are welcome to receive Holy Communion if you would normally receive in the church you regularly attend. If you would prefer not to receive bread and wine, you would be also welcome to come and receive a prayer of blessing at the Communion rail. If you would like such a prayer, if you have your hands by your side, the minister will pray God’s blessing on you.

- 4 –12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptised by one Spirit so as to form one body – whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free – and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14 And so the body is not made up of one part but of many

This is the Word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God

Gospel: John 20:19-23 (please stand)

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to John…All: Glory to you O Lord.19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you!’ 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.21 Again Jesus said, ‘Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.’ 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord All: Praise to you, O Christ.

SermonIn the entire history of humankind, there have been three events that have been more important than any other: the birth of Jesus, the death and resurrection of Jesus, and the coming of the Holy Spirit in power on Pentecost.

- 5 –Response - Prayer for Personal Renewal (we sit or kneel to pray)As we wait in silence,All fill us with your Spirit.

As we listen to your word,All fill us with your Spirit.

As we long for your renewing,All fill us with your Spirit.

A time of silence is kept.

Be with us, Spirit of God;All nothing can separate us from your love.

Breathe on us, breath of God;All fill us with your saving power.

Speak in us, wisdom of God;All bring strength, healing, and peace.

Blessed are you, sovereign God and eternal Father.Daily your Spirit renews the face of the earth, bringing strength out of weakness, hope out of despair and life out of death.

By the power of your Spirit, may your blessing rest upon those anointed with this oil in your name.Let it be for them a sign of your acceptance and adoption, your equipping and empowering.

Form in them the likeness of Christ, that they may be witnesses of your astonishing love, and fill them afresh with life in all its fullness.Blessed be God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. All Blessed be God for ever.

Those who wish to receive this ministry of prayer may come forward to Revd Grant for anointing with oil – this is for all who would like to receive, whether regular or visitor…

Hymns and Songs will be sung during this time

When this time of prayer with anointing is ended …

Let us bless the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. All Let us praise and bless God for ever.

A space to write down any thoughts during the sermon

- 6 -The Creed (we stand)We stand with Christians throughout the centuries and throughout the world today, to affirm our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed.

We believe in one God,the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,of all that is,seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,begotten, not made,of one Being with the Father;through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Maryand was made man.For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose againin accordance with the Scriptures;he ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.Amen.

Prayers for othersOur intercessions may end with…

Merciful Father,All accept these prayers for the sake of your Son,our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen
