Instructional Methods / Strategies The expected course outcomes will be realized through a variety of experiences including discussion boards, writing assignments, internet research, case studies and current topics paper. Each student will present a topic of interest, relevant to the subjects being discussed. The instructor can suggest topics. Video/DVD and other digital media will be utilized as appropriate.

Learning Outcome Assessment Methods Case Studies (20 points x 2 = 40 points): Students will be asked to complete 4 case studies regarding psychopharmacological medications and mental health/addictive disorders. Specific information regarding the case studies will be given by the course instructor prior to students completing the assignment. Through case studies, students will demonstrate an understanding of differential diagnosing, co-occurrence of mental health/addictive issues, cultural considerations to diagnosing, as well as ethical considerations for best practice recommendations of treatment.

Journals (4 x 10 points = 40 points) Students will complete four journals covering a variety of concepts related to pharmacology.

Annotated Bibliography (25 points): Students will be required to select a specific diagnosis or a current professional issue relevant to their designated counseling track (CMHC, AC, or SC) that they are interested in learning about. They will then find a minimum of 5 research articles on that area and write an annotated bibliography on each article.  These five articles can address etiology, populations at risk and those who are resilient, treatment modalities, and a thorough review of the medications involved in the treatment process.  Pay particular attention to both the clinical efficacy of the medication as well as the untoward effects.  These annotated bibliographies should be written with proper citation; a summary of the article in two or three sentences, followed by the student’s opinion on the value of the article as a contribution to the subject matter. This assignment can be used as part of your research for your Current Topics Paper.

Current Topics Paper (50 points): Students will research a current professional issue relevant to their designated counseling track (CMHC, AC, or SC) with regard to psychopharmacology and mental health/addictive disorders. The paper should be written using APA 6th edition stylistic and formatting considerations. Minimum length is 6 pages of text with 7 outside sources cited. This is due at end of semester but you would be well advised to pick a topic and start this assignment in order to keep the assignment both manageable and scholarly. Contact me if you need help identifying a topic.

Unit Exams (3 x 50 points each = 150 points): Students will complete unit exams covering course content discussed through the text and lecture. NO make-up tests will be
