Bu ders, genel olarak Batı Edebiyatı’nı, özel olarak da İngiliz Edebiyatı’nı daha iyi anlayabilmek ve analiz edebilmek için gerekli olan temel mitoloji kavramlar ile Klasik Yunan ve Roma mitleri, Kelt ve İskandinav efsaneleri hakkında bilgi vermektedir. Ders kapsamında öğrencilerin, mit ve mitoloji kavramları, Yunan ve Roma mitleri ile ilgili anlatı ve öyküleri, mitolojik ve dinsel imge, figür, tanrı ve kahramanların özellikleri, mitlerin işlevi ve anlamı, popüler kültürde ve edebiyatta mitlerin yansıması ve kullanımı ile epik gelenek ve kahramanlık olgusu gibi konuları öğrenmesi, incelemesi ve yorumlaması amaçlanmaktadır.

İDE 102 KLASİK EDEBİYAT (3 0 3) 5 AKTS Bu derste öğrencilere, klasik Yunan ve Roma edebiyatlarından metin okumaları ve irdelemeleri, klasik edebiyatın tarihsel, toplumsal, edebi ve kültürel kökenleri ve bağlamını öğrenmeleri ile birlikte, Homeros’un destanı The Odyssey, Aeschylus’un tragedyası Prometheus Bound, Sophocles’in tragedyası Oedipus Rex, Euripides’in tragedyası Hecuba, Aristophanes’in komedyası The Frogs, ve Vergilius’un destanı The Aeneid’den I, II, ve III. kitaplar okutulur.

H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, E. M. 17 ve 18.yy. şiir ve düzyazılarını içine alan bu deste, önce 17.yy. edebi ve toplumsal özellikleri ele alınır. Sonra 17.yy. şiir akımları şairlerin en tipik özelliklerinden incelenir ve sonra düzyazı örnekleri ele alınır. Aynı şablon 18.yy. için de uygulanır.

This course develops an appreciation for 19th century Victorian Literature, significantly Victorian Novel, and an understanding of the impact of Industrial Revolution in Victorian England on individual life in terms of economic, social and cultural changes, and political and philosophical systems of thinking. Surveying the innovations and changes starting from 1960s till present, this course acquaints students with the reflection of socio-political and philosophical thinking on English novel in the second half of 20th century and onwards; Postmodernism, the theoretical postmodern aspects and thematic features including new literary terms, trends and points of view identified and examined in the novels of this period. This course mainly includes the definition, key terms and features of travel narrative as a literary genre, and offers a survey of English travel writing canon starting from Middle Ages till present as well as a comprehensive understanding of idea and meaning of travel literature from the context of theoretical and thematic terms like journey for discovery, cultural encounter and assimilation, cultural familiarization / defamiliarization, ideology, colonial and postcolonial discourses, theories of Colonialism, Postcolonialism and Orientalism and their diverse range of literary, thematic and theoretical reflections in both fictional and nonfictional travel narratives of English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish authors and other writers.
