Harvest Thanksgiving Sunday

1030 am September 23 AD 2018

The Harvest Moon (detail), George Mason 1872

Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for

harvest. Already the one who reaps is receiving

wages and gathering fruit for eternal life,

so that sower and reaper may rejoice together.

St John 4:35-36Harvest Thanksgiving Sunday

Opening: 270 Come ye faithful people, come

The Collect:  Almighty and everlasting God, who has graciously given to us the fruits of the earth in their season: We yield you humble and hearty thanks for these your bounties, beseeching you to give us grace rightly to use them to your glory and the relief of those that need; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O LORD, we beseech you, absolve your people from their offences; that through your bountiful goodness we may be delivered from the bands of those sins, which by our frailty we have committed: grant this, O heavenly Father, for Jesus Christ’s sake, our blessed Lord and Saviour. Amen.

Old Testament Reading: Deuteronomy 8:7-10This is the Word of the Lord: Thanks be to GodPsalm 65

1 Thou O God art ‘ praised in ‘ Sion: and unto thee shall the vow be per‘form-ed ‘ in Je‘rusalem.2 Thou that ‘ hearest the ‘ prayer : unto ‘ thee shall ‘ all flesh ‘ come.3 My misdeeds pre‘vail a‘gainst me : O be thou ‘ merciful ’ unto our ‘ sins.

4 Blessed is the man whom thou choosest and receivest ‘ unto ‘ thee : he shall dwell in thy court, and shall be satisfied with the pleasures of thy house, even ‘ of thy ‘ holy ‘ temple.5 Thou shalt shew us wonderful things in thy righteousness, O God of ‘ our sal’vation : thou that art

the hope of all the ends of the earth, and of them that re’main in the ‘ broad’ sea.6 Who in his strength setteth ‘ fast the ‘ mountains : and is ‘ girded a’bout with ‘ power:7 Who stilleth the ‘ raging of the ‘ sea : and the noise of his waves and the ‘ madness ‘ of the ‘ people.8 They also that dwell in the uttermost parts of the earth shall be afraid ‘ at thy ‘ tokens : thou that makest the outgoings of the ‘ morning and ‘ evening to ‘ praise thee.9 Thou visitest the ‘ earth and ‘ blessest it : thou ‘ makest it ‘ very ‘ plenteous. 10 The river of God is ‘ full of ‘ water : thou preparest their corn, for so thou pro’videst ‘ for the ‘ earth.11 Thou waterest her furrows, thou sendest rain into the little ‘ valleys there’of : thou makest it soft with the drops of rain, and ‘ blessest the ‘ increase ‘ of it.12 Thou crownest the year ‘ with thy ‘ goodness : and thy ‘ clouds ‘ drop ‘ fatness.13 They shall drop upon the ‘ dwellings of the ‘ wilderness : and the little hills shall re’joice on ‘ every ‘ side.14 The folds shall be ‘ full of ‘ sheep : the valleys also shall stand so thick with corn that ‘ they shall ‘ laugh and ‘ sing.Glory be to the Father ’ and to • the ’ Son : and ’ to the ’ Holy ‘ Ghost; As it was in the beginning is ’ now and • ever ’ shall be : world without ’ end. A ’ — ’ men.

New Testament Reading: Galatians 6:6-10One who is taught the word must share all good things with the one who teaches. Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever

one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God

Gradual: 272 Praise and thanksgiving

Gospel Acclamation:Alleluia (x4)We do not live by ’ bread a- ’ lone, but by every word that comes ’ from the • mouth of ’ God.

Alleluia  (x4)

The Gospel: John 4.31-36Before the Gospel we sing: Glory to you, O LordMeanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” So the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?” Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work. Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest. Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together.”After the Gospel we sing: Praise to you, O Christ
